will take office in June. Ballots will be sent out
with the May newsletter and Ruth will count the
returned ballots.
The idea of possibly having either a before or
after meeting sit down question and answer
discussion each month was proposed and
discussed. The board will take this suggestion
under consideration.
Show & Tell had 11 participants and Lloyd
Curtis won the Craft Supply certificate. Greg
Riley, Harley Pate, and John Hayes did their 1st
Show & Tell and received their SKW hats.
Dave Clark had walnut wood for sale at $6.00
per board foot. The Bring Back Raffle items
were won by Don Anderson, Leroy Cole, and Hal
Prester. The monthly egg challenge and gift
certificate was won by Jim Orange. Ron Maddux
and Ruth Chipman also received gift certificates
for 2nd & 3rd. A short break was taken and then
John Nicholas with the help of his audience
demonstrated part 1: the basics of creating all
types of finials.
May Meeting: The May demonstration will be
part 2 of the techniques for making the long thin
finials.
Election of Officers: See page 2 of newsletter for
instructions on voting for the new SKW officers
***********************************
Meeting News: 28 SKW members and 2
guests (John Hayes, Chris Lamer) attended
the March SKW workshop which John
Nicholas called to order at 9:07 am. Then the
guests introduced themselves.
Gordon’s reported $1486 in the treasury with
$378 designated as library fund. Then the
minutes for March as written in the April
newsletter were approved.
Old Business: There will be no SKW booth at
the woodcarver’s show. Also, the slate of
officers was discussed and it was requested
that if any member was interested in running
for office to contact one of the board members
as the Vice-President position does not have a
nominee.
New Business: Jim Orange reported the loss
of the library supply box and asked for its
return if any member found they accidentally
picked it up with their own belongings at the
March workshop.
Conducting a shop tour day was brought up
and voted yes to be held at a separate time
from a regular meeting. Volunteer shops were
made by Dave Clark, Les Hastings, David
Paugh, Harley Pate, John Nicholas, and Jim
Orange.
The membership was informed the elections
would take place in May and new officers
This month brings more people to the shop. I
have actually begun cleaning out the
accumulation and dust. I even mounted a rough
turned bowl on the lathe to begin finish turning
it.
Our challenge for this month was to work on
beginning to turn something long and thin.
Think short finial, or other type of spindle
turning. Last month's demo was Part 1 of a 2
part session on turning long and thin. We looked
at mounting and some basic techniques of
staring a longer and thinner spindle. This
month we continue that look at getting thin.
We also have our elections coming up. The Slate
of Nominees presented last month remains the
same. We are still looking at an opening for Vice
President. Jim and I have discussed this
together. Some of the information we developed
is posted on the Blog site I was using last
summer.
I have changed that blog, at the request of a
number of members, from a restricted access
blog to a general access blog. It should now
allow any person to read the content.

Read through these descriptions of our
leadership positions and my thoughts on the
help available for those who will be stepping into
our leadership positions for the coming year.
We need to have the open position of VP filled
for a year as VP and then a year as President.
We need to get a crew that can share the duties
of equipment, library, and cleanup. A crew
would allow members to participate and still
deal with the issue of kids, jobs, or plans made
by our family.
Please call Jim Orange or myself with any
questions, or see us at the meeting.
John
Next month’s workshop will be June 29th, 2013.
This is the 5th Sat and NOT the 3rd.
The July monthly challenge is to be some style
of a long thin finial. Be sure and bring yours.
