The 2017-2018 school year is ending, and I wish to dedicate my “Superintendent’s Message” to thanking our communities for their many, significant contributions resulting in another successful school year in the South Hamilton Community Schools. The list of those whom I wish to thank is extensive and therefore it is unrealistic that I could list all the names here of those who have been supportive of the work of our school district. It is, nonetheless, appropriate that I extend a general thank you.

To all our students, I thank you for your hard work and for the excitement that you bring to school each day.

I wish also to thank our teachers, support staff, and administrators for your hard work and your care and concern for our students. You bring your best efforts to school each day, and I am grateful for your noble work.

Thank you to all the parents of our students for your support and for your cooperation and col-laboration. Your partnership with the school district is critically important and, in my opinion, the results of your efforts speak for themselves.

Our Booster and Foundation Organizations extend tremendous effort in support of the work that takes place in each of our schools on a daily basis. The work that you do—and the generous donations of resources and funds—supplement our mission as a school district to the benefit of all students. In short, we could not do what we need to do without you.

Thank you to our School Board, various City Councils, Police Department, Fire Department, local Library staffs, Parks and Recreation Department, Public Works Department, and all the municipal officials and employees who serve as important partners with our school district and who make our efforts extra special and rewarding knowing that we work in a community that supports our young people and the mission of the school district.

I extend my deep appreciation to the South Hamilton communities at-large for your strong sup-port— moral and financial. You demonstrate time and time again that you care about the children of our special towns through your strong support of public education. I am very aware of the challeng-es that many taxpayers face and remain committed to all that we will work diligently as a school district to ensure that you can always remain proud of the fact that you have invested in a top-rate school district, something that each town and city in the state of Iowa strives for, but does not always realize.

I am honored to serve as your Superintendent of Schools and commit to you that I will continue to do my very best, in partnership with others, to ensure that you can always be proud to say that you live in or and/go to school in the South Hamilton District— a school community that has an outstanding and well-deserved reputation for excellence with respect to its schools and community spirit. THE ACTOne date remains for this current school year’s ACT testing for 4-year college-bound students. Registration deadline is May 5th for the test date on June 10th; students register online at www.actstudent.org/start. South Hamilton’s School Code: 162-215.

These spring test dates are excellent opportunities for juniors to take the ACT for the first or second time. This gives them a great advantage going into their senior year having already taken the ACT or being able to re-take the ACT test early or begin the application process towards colleges in the fall. Our goal is for all seniors to apply to colleges by November 1st and being accepted early sets students up for more housing and scholar-ships opportunities. Students that wish to take ENG-105 and ENG-106 this fall or spring must have an 18 on the reading portion of the ACT to meet mandatory placement scores.

NEW DOOR SECURITY SYSTEM OPERATIONAL AT THE MS/HSKen Howard, Superintendent of Schools

I was once asked what my job was when it comes to school safety.

I could have answered, “to develop safety and emergency plans, so that the students who attend South Hamilton are as safe as they can reasonably be while on our campuses.” Yes, the creation and carrying out these processes is the responsibility of all our staff, but the one aspect of student safety that we are focusing on in our local buildings is the development of barriers.

The middle/high school recently enacted daily practices that include limiting the doors from which one may enter, door notification systems that inform staff members of a propped entry, and a buzz-in procedure at the front doors. Each of these items is intended to create one more barrier between individu-als outside the buildings and our students and staff within the facilities.

A system similar to the one being utilized at the secondary building will be installed in the elementary this summer so it can be used when the 2018-2019 school year begins. The district is striving to create more and better barriers; and processes that will improve the safety of all who walk our buildings’ halls.

ANNOUNCING HECTOR’S CUPBOARD......South Hamilton’s food pantry is open for business! Big thank you to The Foodbank of Iowa, WG Marketing in Jewell, the Boone Hy-Vee, and all of the other individuals and businesses that have helped us to accomplish our dream of having this food source available to the families of South Hamilton. Without your help and support our dream couldn’t have become a reality.

Qualifying families are able to shop on Wednesdays at the MS/HS from 3:45-5:45 PM. One signature needed per family by a family member 18 years of age or older, each visit. If Wednesdays do not work for your family, please feel free to contact the MS/HS office at 515-827-5418 to find a time during school hours that would work better for you. We look forward to helping feed South Hamilton families in 2018 and for many years to come!

The Lord’s Cupboard, located at Bethesda Lutheran Church is also available to families in our community. Please see their flyer for location hours.

WHAT LITERACY SKILLS DOES MY CHILD NEED AND HOW CAN I HELP MY CHILD DEVELOP THEM?

Birth to Pre-KindergartenBabies listen, react, and play with sounds from the moment they are born. They babble, imitate, and try to talk. This is an important stage in literacy development. The more words and stories children hear during this time—in whatever language is spoken in the home—the easier it will be for them to learn to read and write in English later.

Young children love to listen. They love to hear their favorite books read aloud over and over. They ask “Why?” just so they can listen to you talk.

Young children love to talk. Once they discover that sounds have meaning, they learn new words very quickly and start to use them to interact with adults.

Young children love to read. They love to handle books and gradually they learn to read from front to back and left to right. Preschool children can begin to learn the alphabet, to recognize letters and to associate them with their sounds.

Young children love to write. They imitate what they see adults doing and learn to express their thoughts by scribbles and drawing.

What can you do at home? Talk with your child:

• Talk about everyday things. Name objects your child sees.• Talk about signs and labels, pointing out the words.• Talk about pictures in books.• Talk about TV shows or videos your child watches.• Tell stories about your family, favorite memories, and past experiences.• Sing songs.• Teach nursery rhymes.• Teach the alphabet song.• Play pretend games.• Describe what you are doing with words your child can use.

FOR INFANTS, TODDLERS AND FAMILIES

In Region 8 our beliefs will be realized when family/children service providers and community members work as part-ners to ensure that children and their families receive the support they need to achieve their dreams.

Program OverviewEarly ACCESS, formerly known as Iowa’s System of Early Intervention Services, is a partnership between families with young children, birth to age three, and providers from local Public Health, Human Services, Child Health Special-ty Clinics, area education agencies (AEA), and other community programs. The purpose of this system is for families and staff to work together in identifying, coordinating and providing needed services and resources that will help the family to assist their infant or toddler to grow and develop.

Age Requirements & EligibilityAn infant or toddler under the age of three (birth to age three) who:

• Has a condition or disability that is known to have a high probability of later delays if early intervention services were not provided, or

• Is already experiencing a 25 percent delay in one or more areas of growth or development.

ServicesThe family and providers work together to identify and address specific family concerns and priorities as they relate to the child’s overall growth and development. In addition, broader family needs and concerns can be addressed by locating other supportive services/resources in the local community for the family and/or child. All services to the child are provided in the child’s natural environment including the home and other community settings where children of the same age without disabilities participate.

Services required to be made available to children and families include:+ Service Coordination,+ Screenings, evaluation and assessment, and+ Development and reviews of an “Individualized Family Service Plan” (IFSP)

Other services, based upon individual needs, include:• Assistive Technology • Physical Therapy• Audiology • Psychology• Family/Training/Counseling • Service Coordination• Health Services • Social Work• Medical Evaluations • Special Instruction• Nursing • Speech Language Therapy• Nutrition • Vision• Occupational Therapy • Transportation

CostsThere are no costs to families for service coordination activities; for evaluation and assessment activities to deter-mine eligibility or identify the concerns, priorities and resources of the family; or for development and reviews of the Individualized Family Service Plan. The service coordinator works with the family to determine costs and payment arrangements of other needed services. Some services may have charges or sliding fee scales or may be provided at no cost to families. Costs are determined by a variety of factors that are individualized to each child and family.

Where to apply: Families or providers can call Gale Randall, Early ACCESS Regional Liaison, in the Storm Lake office at 866-503-4636 ext. 2036 or 712-732-2257 ext. 2036, [email protected].
