Welcome From The Chief

With just a briefeth int'rruption in the first parteth of this 21st century, the Webelos

Jamb'ree of the South Fl'rida Council hast been welcoming first and second year Webelos to the Kingdom of Elmore since 1978, to receiveth a glimpse of their future life as a Scout, and in keeping with our King Baden Powell’s mission.

This year’s theme is “Renaissance Games.” Let’s bray out the 34th anniv'rsary of

the Webelos Jamb'ree, in ol’ style. Chooseth a House name, a House bann'r, practice thy ol’ English, and bringeth thy most wondrous game and thy joyous competitive spirit!

The activities yond shall beest exp'rienc'd in the Kingdom of Elmore shall help all

Webelos with many advancements; alloweth those folk to receiveth to knoweth some of the troops in the South Fl'rida Council; and gain arts in sheer excit'ment yond shall giveth those folk knowledge useful f'r life.

Our Jamb'ree Seneschal (aka Staff) cannot wait to welcometh thee all to what

Why Thou and Thine House Should Cometh To The Webelos Jamb’ree

The primary reason to come out to the Jamb’ree is to have FUN!

If thou are a new Webelos den just getting started or not, the Webelos Jamb’ree

provides an excellent opportunity for an exciting campout. Come out and learn how to set up a camp, take care of advancements, and have fun the “Webelos Way”. We’ve designed the Jamb’ree to be a learning experience for ALL scouts.

Thou shouldst come out because the Webelos Jamb’ree provides thine Webelos with an introduction and an overview of several Webelos adventures that the Webelos shalt be working on. This is a great way to get thine scouts excited about all the great times that they are going to have. This year’s theme, RENAISSANCE GAMES begins to introduce Webelos Scouts, their noble knights, and noble parents, to what awaits them in the Webelos Program and their journey to Scouts BSA. We want Webelos Scouts to be excited about the new activities they get to participate in. We want House knights and parents to understand the process of “crossing over” to Scouts BSA, and how they can participate in their new troop and demonstrate to them the benefits of having their scouts continue in the scouting.

We shalt have all sorts of fun competitions for the scouts. Webelos shalt work on

Webelos activities and have an opportunity to participate in activities geared to giving them a taste of the Scouts BSA program. Of course, we shalt have everybody’s favorite, the Chariot Race, and a few other traditional events. Right up until that weekend, seneschal (aka staff) shalt continue to work on many exciting and fun-filled activities to optimize the experience for the enjoyment of all. Don’t miss out on all the fun.

Register thine “House” (aka Den) NOW for a great Webelos Jamb’ree!

Rotation Schedule In order to properly schedule a large number of Webelos through as many events as possible,

each Webelos House shalt be assigned to a unique rotation schedule. It is important that each House follow the schedule rather than just wandering around the Jamb’ree. If for any reason we need to locate thine House for questions or an emergency, we shalt have an idea of where thou are. Please DO NOT just show up at events on Saturday. To do so guarantees chaos. Rotation Instructions

• Rotation Schedule assigned by House at check in Friday Night • All participants shalt be assigned unique wrist band to be worn ALL weekend. • Please stick to thine rotation schedule and don’t just show up at something thou think thou

would like to see or do. • Attendance at the Castles shalt not be enough to complete any of the Webelos Adventures.

Castles are a way of exposing the Webelos to a variety of different activities. • Thou must not skip any of the Castle events. Scouting is about service to others. If thou

have already done a similar activity, please help those other Webelos that may not be as familiar as thou.

• Activities shalt run from 8:30am until Noon, and from 2pm until 5:30 pm. There is a total of 6 rotations. Houses should be able to complete 3 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon. Each session shalt last 65 minutes with 5 minutes to arrive at the next station.

Please remember this is not an advancement-based event. We want to give the Webelos an exposure to Scout type knowledge and activities while having fun! Those running activities shalt not be signing off on any books. Advancements shalt be learned. However, the responsibility for ensuring the Webelos Scout has mastered the knowledge shalt fall on the Houses themselves.

Campsite Evaluation

We encourage all Houses attending the Jamb’ree to participate in this event and show everyone that thine House can set up a model campsite.

The Jamb’ree seneschal shalt provide reviewers to evaluate each of the campsites as they are set

up by the opening ceremony on Saturday morning. The reviewers shalt be evaluating the campsites based on the criteria included in the appendix of this handbook.

The Jamb’ree Committee recommends that Packs use “low impact” camping methods. Fire

should be used with one placed at the camp kitchen /cooking area and second in an easily accessible area of the campsite. Two fire buckets per tent may be substituted.

Please encourage thine Webelos to utilize the patrol method during this event so that they can

begin to understand the methods of Scouts BSA.

Ye Ol’ Chariot Race Ye Ol’ Chariot Race shalt be held as part of the event rotation in the morning and afternoon. Ye Ol’ Chariot Race event is a staple of the Webelos Jamb’ree. The race is completely described in the Appendix. There may be a need for run off races after everyone has had an opportunity to compete. Please be sure to check at Saturday’s registration area around 5:30 PM to see if thou need to participate in a runoff. The three fastest Houses overall shalt receive awards.

THOU MUST BRING THINE HOUSE BANNERS/FLAGS/PENNANTS (remember, this is not thine Pack flag). The Jamb’ree Team shalt coordinate the exact time and path that Houses shalt take from their campsites to the Campfire. It is important for all Houses to stay and sit together to prevent Webelos from becoming separated in the dark. Webelos and adults should bring a flashlight/ headlight with them to the campfire. Further instructions shalt be given at Friday night’s Cracker-barrel. Fun performances are time-honored tradition and favorite of Webelos. Due to time constraints, we must limit the number of campfire performances. All songs should be themed “Renaissance”, can cover activities that were experienced during the day, and should include thine scout-made instruments. Songs for the campfire shall be chosen by the Seneschal, so be ready! Please refer to the Campfire Do’s and Don’ts in the Appendix.

Scouts’ Own & Closing Ceremony

A Scout is Reverent There shalt be a non-denominational worship service on Sunday morning at 8:30 AM. The

service shalt take place at the Amphitheater and shalt be conducted by Scouts from the OA (Order of the Arrow). All Webelos and their knights are EXPECTED to attend. Dress shalt be Class “A” uniform.

Attendance is mandatory and is so noted on thine Webelos Activity Field Participation Award

scorecard, which must be signed and turned in attesting to thine House’s attendance. Immediately following the Scouts’ Own, we shalt proceed with the Closing Ceremony and the presentation of awards.

There shalt be no checkouts or departures allowed prior to the conclusion of the closing ceremony.

Thine Frequent Inquiries (FAQs) What is the Renaissance Theme? The Renaissance took place from the 14th to the 17th century. Lots of cool things happened during that time, including Knights in shining armor, archery, Lords and Ladies in charge of Castles, Jesters, etc. It was a cultural and social movement that changed the world as it was known back then. Did thou know that many famous people were alive during that time, including Galileo, Leonardo Da Vinci, Christopher Columbus, and Joan of Arc, just to name a few? Adults shall get into it by channeling their inner “Game of Thrones” feelings! How does the theme influence our Webelos Jamb’ree? All advancements and activities that thou shalt experience this weekend shall be handled in a way that conforms with the theme. For example, thou shalt be learning archery basics, how to throw a javelin, and cook typical foods from that era. Did thou know that volleyball back then was called “Pallone?” What do we wear? Class A’s shall be expected during only 2 events: Opening Ceremonies, because we have to show our respect for the flag after all! And during Closing Ceremonies, since we’ll be taking down the flag and we need to show reverence during Scouts’ Own. Otherwise, DRESS UP! Take home-made items and make them into costumes that keep with the theme… Did thou know that this year’s Chief Award shall go to the Pack that shows the greatest amount of spirit? (See page 30 for details.) Shall there be sports? Are most castles made out of stone! AYE! We shall have Gaga Pit, Pallone, Javelin Throw, Chariot Race, Archery, and Jousting! Why don’t we use our Pack Numbers? Although at the end of your cub scouting experience thou shalt be moving on to Scout BSA Troops, the patrol method within the troops shall have thou sorted into Patrols that thou shalt get to name and for which thou shalt create your own symbols, flags, even patches. Creating a “House Name” and banner/pennant that thou shalt carry around with thou this weekend, is a fun way to experience that aspect of scouting! Did thou know that we are having a patch competition for the Jamb’ree? Due September 20th! How do the Tournament House Awards work? The Houses to accumulate the most points in all of the different competitions shall win the Overall House Awards ~ 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places. Behold! Thou shalt still be winning awards within each of the competitions, so everyone gets a shot at greatness! Why don’t we have skits? Ah but thou may! Just add music to thine skits and sing thine lines! The most original performances shall win the maximum points toward their House totals and shall be welcomed onstage for Campfire! And make sure to add the instruments thou learnt to make during the Maestro activity for maximum points! This shall be a musical campfire dear, ladies and lords!
