Background:
The South East Palliative Care / Dr Ruth Redpath Essay Prize for
$1000 is to be awarded
to a MBBS student enrolled in the Undergraduate Entry Program -
Clayton or Graduate
Entry Program of the Monash MBBS who writes the best essay about
an aspect of
palliative care. The paper should seek to extend current
knowledge and may address
areas like clinical care or service delivery. The essay may also
focus on aspects of
community and interprofessional care delivery. This prize is
designed to build awareness
and knowledge of palliative care not only within MBBS but all
health disciplines. Further

Dr Ruth Redpath AO was instrumental in the early development of
palliative care in
Victoria and Australia. Dr Redpath, along with her husband Bruce
and some like
minded friends, were instrumental in the establishment of
Dandenong Palliative Care
Service in 1984.This service was one of the services which
eventually amalgamated
to form South East Palliative Care in 1998.
In developing the essay, students are encouraged to reflect upon
their personal
experiences in educational or clinical settings. In writing the
essay, the identity of
individuals must be protected by appropriate
de-identification.

The criteria against which these applications will be assessed
are:
1. Proposal is complete - an accurate and complete form,
submitted on time.
2. The student is enrolled in the MBBS degree in either the
Central or Gippsland
program.
3. The student demonstrates an awareness of the philosophy and
principles of
palliative care and its practice in Australia.
4. The student is able to relate their topic to the delivery of
services by SE Palliative
Care.
5. The topic is of relevance to an aspect of current delivery of
palliative care. This
may be in clinical community or service delivery.
6. The topic is provocative and seeks to extend palliative care
knowledge.
7. The essay is clearly written and logically constructed.
8. There is a demonstration of wide use of recent
literature.
Students applying must be enrolled in the MBBS or BMedSc of the
UndergraduateEntry Program - Clayton and Graduate Entry Program of
Monash University, andare only eligible to win the prize once.
