Introduction to K2 IP

• A full service IP firm with a difference.• Each K2 IP practitioner is independent, and top‐flight in their field ‐ with

international experience, commercial perspective and proven track records.

• Extensive in‐house practical experience as patent and trade mark attorneys, IP lawyers and IP managers.

• Practical, pragmatic, business‐focussed advice and support – we’ve been there, done that, got the tee shirt!

• Help businesses create value from their IP and minimise the associated risks.

• Record‐keeping, paralegal services, accounting, research                           and additional professional support from Keltie.

Why do I need an IP strategy?

• IP is crucial for companies of all sizes, but is not always well managed.• In times of cost constraint, it’s easy to think it’s

not worth investing in IP,• BUT …

– Intellectual assets account for >70% of enterprise                                     value, and

– IP is often the deal driver.• Role and importance of IP changing at an increasing rate –> huge

opportunities for companies who are prepared, but significant risks for those that are not.

• 60% of EU SMEs want to transact or license their IP to grow their business, but >40% of attempts fail. Why?

An IP strategy comprises measures to ensure that IP rights are                 developed, exploited and respected in a manner which supports                            the strategy and goals of the business.

Typical elements of an IP strategy

• Good understanding and record of the company’s IP assets (registered and unregistered).

• Fit for purpose:– Innovation processes– Brand protection measures– Knowledge management– Supply chain management– Risk identification and mitigation– Governance– Cost control

• How does my organisation compare to my competitors?

Water/Glycol Fluid Fill Benefits

Water-glycol-filled motors Low viscosity = lower frictional

losses, higher speeds Run-with-leak capability = increased

uptime Cooler operation = longer motor life Environmentally friendly = regulatory

compliance, peace of mind Small topside footprint = easier

logistics Lower weight = increased versatility

Oil-filled motors High viscosity = high frictional losses,

especially at higher speeds Higher operating temperature = risk of

increased corrosion Seawater ingress = immediate

catastrophic failure, environmental risk Complex deployment = increased costs Large topside footprint = pressure on

space Prohibited by many water authorities =

fewer applications

Future collaboration – Hayward Tyler Summary

HTL have the pedigree and knowledge as designers and manufacturers of ‘wet wound subsea motors’.

This knowledge is readily transferable to subsea generators.

HTL will have a 3.2MW subsea generator built and tested by December 2016.

We are working on a 1MW induction generator as a demonstrator.

Ideally positioned to be the ‘manufacturer of choice’ for subsea generators.
