Caduceus (RAF Medical Services) Branch on the Somme Recently, Paul Newton, who is the standard bearer for the RAF Association Caduceus (RAF Medical Services) branch took a group of rugby football players to the Somme as part of their Gold Duke of Edinburgh award. The group travelled from Salford to the Somme First World War battlefields culminating in attending the 101st anniversary remembrance service at the Thiepval memorial. The expedition was a tribute to the forgotten heroes of Eccles RFC, many of those who never returned having served in the Lancashire Fusilier Regiments. Having reached Thiepval, they met with dignitaries from Great Britain and France including Lord Llewellyn, Her Majesty’s Ambassador to France where they laid wreaths. Paul was invited to parade the RAFA Branch standard, and was honoured to do so at the memorial, a short video can be found here.

Autumn 1914. They spent one year training in Britain and arrived in Boulogne in November 1915; transferred by train to Abbeville and then marched to the front, passing through Longpre, Bourdon, Flixecourt, Coisy, arriving in Albert, December 1915, and then moved up to the trenches at Authuille for the final attack on Thiepval. Are you serving or former serving RAF Medical Services, full time or reservist? If so, did you know you have your own branch of the RAF Association? The Caduceus (RAF Medical Services) branch is a virtual branch that arranges events and get-togethers for their members, as well as helping with welfare, fundraising and other issues. Their website is www.rafa.org.uk/caduceus and you are encouraged to join. If you are a member of another branch you can transfer by emailing your name, branch, and membership number to Caduceus [email protected] or contacting the South East and Eastern Area Office via [email protected]. If you don’t want to commit to transferring branches you can nominate Caduceus to be your secondary branch by contacting them directly.

HRH Prince Henry of Wales Visits RAF Honington to present new Queen's Colour The 20th July 17 proved to be a truly spectacular day for RAF Honington when HRH Prince Henry of Wales KCVO attended to present the RAF Regiment with a new Queen’s Colour to commemorate its 75th anniversary.

The day began when Prince Harry awarded the Firmin Sword of Peace to the RAF Police. The award is given to the unit that has been judged to have made the most valuable contribution to humanitarian activities by establishing good and friendly relations with the inhabitants of communities at home or overseas. During 2015 the RAF Police made a significant contribution to humanitarian activities. These included aviation security on Op Pennyweight, the provision of humanitarian aid following the cyclone in Vanuatu; Op Vogul supporting the movement of UK aid

supplies to South Sudan; Op Leyland supporting relief efforts following the earthquake in Nepal and Op TAILPIN, the repatriation of individuals from Tunisia following terrorist attacks on UK citizens.

The RAF Police have also maintained a detachment supporting security at Freetown Airport, Sierra Leone during the Ebola crisis and went forward to assist in the provision of aviation security as 16,000 British passport holders were repatriated through Sharm el-Sheikh, having been stranded following a terrorist attack.

Provost Marshal (RAF) Group Captain Steve Horne MA RAF said: “This highly coveted prize was unanimously awarded to us in recognition of the extraordinary catalogue of humanitarian, engagement and charitable activities that the organisation undertook in 2015. It is a testament to the personnel within the RAF Police that in spite of challenging regular duties, they have had an active involvement in charitable activities, fundraising over £57,710 for worthy causes.”

Accompanied by the Stn Cdr, Gp Capt Dave Tait MBE ADC MA RAF, His Royal Highness arrived at the parade square where the Queen’s Colour Squadron and graduating gunners from Meiktila Flight 4-16 were waiting in anticipation. The impressive sound of the Airbus A400M Atlas flying over RAF Honington signified the start of the presentation of the new Queen’s Colour. The Standards for all of the RAF Regiment Squadrons stood proudly behind the RAF Regiment Band.

HRH Prince Harry read a personal message from Her Majesty The Queen; “The presentation of Colours is an opportunity to recognise historic achievements and to look forward to the future with confidence; a confidence built upon the dedication of those who have served under past colours and will serve under this colour being presented today. I am pleased that Prince Harry is able to present a new Colour to the Royal Air Force Regiment in this, your 75th Anniversary year, on my behalf as your Air Commodore in Chief.

Next year the RAF will celebrate 100 years of defending the skies over the United Kingdom and protecting our Nation’s interests overseas

Here today, every generation is represented from the graduating gunners on parade to the founder members watching on. There are also a great many families present; their service and dedication is at the heart of The Royal Air Force Regiment's success.”

Despite the downpour at the end of the ceremony dignitaries, service personnel, veterans, families, school children and the local community were in the audience enjoying this historic and momentous occasion.

Before meeting the families and school children Prince Harry was introduced to Ron Fairweather, William Walker and Raymond Hill who were founding members of No 1 and 2 Armoured Car Company RAF. Next in line were a few of the graduating gunners from Meiktila Flt 4-16. LAC Richard Keating who was born in Cork said: “I was thrilled to be on the parade but to meet Prince Harry was absolutely amazing”

Sam Brown (9), presented Prince Harry with a commemorative RAF Regt 75 Bear and a beautiful bouquet. Their father FS Jordan Brown said: “This is such a memorable day for Sam; one he will never forget.” He added: ‘Sam was nervous but very excited to meet the Prince.” RAF WITTERING NEWS

Senior Aircraftman Matty Smith is RAF Wittering’s newest photographer and made his first trip to the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) last week.

RIAT is the world’s largest military air show. It is held at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire and organised by the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust and the RAF. Every year the engineering and logistics squadrons from RAF Wittering and RAF Brize Norton have a major role in making it happen. Senior Aircraftman Smith (27) qualified from his photography course at RAF Cosford this year and had his first opportunity to visit the famous air show this year. The Royal Air Force Village at RIAT gives visitors a chance to meet the RAF with all the skills it embodies, from specialised transport to deployed catering and bomb disposal. RAF Wittering personnel are more than exhibitors at RIAT, Squadron Leader David Ward, Executive Officer on No 85 Expeditionary Logistics Wing, was project officer for the RAF Village. He and his small team made sure everything was in the right place at the right time, redefining what it means to be busy. Squadron Leader Ward said: “Thousands of visitors come to RIAT every year and walk through the RAF Village, so everything has to be spot on. The village has two major themes; obviously we’ve shown visitors what we can do, but it is also a great recruiting environment.” RIAT is fertile ground for amateur photographers. The routes near to the airfield at Fairford are lined with aviation enthusiasts equipped with huge cameras and telephoto lenses. Senior Aircraftman Smith has always been interested in photography. He said: “The thought of combining a hobby and a job sounded like the perfect role. RIAT was good, it’s got a bit of everything. From a photography perspective I really enjoyed the flying elements.” Group Captain Tony Keeling is the Station Commander at RAF Wittering and Commander of the RAF A4 Force Elements. He said: “RIAT is the biggest public event in the Royal Air Force calendar. Tens of thousands of people come to the show, but we are also visited by senior figures from foreign air forces and the Defence Industry. The eyes of the world are on us.” He continued: “People have seen a modern, professional and capable air force. Equally, visitors must enjoy themselves at RIAT and those who are interested in joining the RAF must feel inspired by what they see. Squadron Leader Ward has done an admirable job in preparing the RAF village, and SAC Smith’s images certainly capture the lively atmosphere.”

Artistic pupils from Wittering Primary School visit RAF Station

Fourteen junior artists from Wittering Primary School spent a special day at RAF Wittering on Thursday 13 July, as the Station rewarded their colourful creative skills.

Flight Sergeant Maxine Booth is the Air Cadet Liaison Officer (ACLO) at RAF Wittering. She and Chief Technician Paul Haynes (Deputy ACLO) have the responsibility, in addition to their primary roles, of making sure the Station is ready for the hundreds of Air Cadets who visit each year.

The link between Wittering Primary School and the Air Cadets might not seem obvious, save for some creative thinking from the ACLO team. The Air Cadet building at RAF Wittering needed a refresh, and what better way to enhance the refresh than by including some artwork from the local school.

Maxine said: “Wittering Primary School is a great place and the children are so creative, that’s why they design the Station’s Christmas card. We wanted to tap into that energy and show the Air Cadets how it’s important to remember that they’re part of a wider community.”

The children, all from years five and six, had a packed day at RAF Wittering. Their day began with a look at the Tutor aircraft operated by No 6 Flying Training School, followed by a demonstration of the robots used by 5131 Bomb Disposal Squadron and a trip to the Heritage Centre.

8

Rhys Thrower is the Head-teacher at Wittering Primary School. He said: “We thought this was a marvellous idea from the very start. It’s so affirming for the children to know that their artwork will have a permanent place on the Station, and they’ve had the most exciting day. Great.”

The designs were based around a silhouette of the iconic Harrier aircraft and the children were asked to come up with a vibrant way of filling them in. Wittering pupil Dakota Bolton said: “I didn’t think my picture would win but I was really surprised and happy when it did. I’ve had a great day and I’ve enjoyed looking at the aircraft and visiting bomb disposal.” Group Captain Tony Keeling is the Station Commander at RAF Wittering, he said: “I’m always surprised by how creative children can be and it seems everyone’s been the winner today. We have some charming new artwork for the Air Cadet building and the children from Wittering have had a really enjoyable day out.” Group Captain Keeling continued: “For me, this is the essence of positive engagement with our local community; the ACLO team have been as imaginative and creative as the children. It’s been fun and educational and we’ve all benefitted.” Editor: Ed Palmer Photographer: SAC Abigail Drewett RAF/MOD Crown Copyright 2017

Form 1056 and 1056A Branches are reminded that in accordance with Branch Regulation (BR) 23, Annual General Meetings (AGMs) should have taken place between 1 January and 31 March 2017. Unfortunately, there are still a number of 1056 and 1056A forms outstanding. Letters will now be sent to the individual branches.

Branch and branch club accounts

Page 9: South East and Eastern Area Newsletter - RAF A

9

In accordance with Branch Regulation (BR) 32, branch and branch club accounts as at 31 December, including a report from the auditor or independent examiner, should be forwarded to the Area HQ no later than 31 March the following year . Unfortunately, there are still some outstanding and those branches will be receiving a letter in the near future. Your attention is also drawn to byelaw 10(1) b, which states that a branch shall be entitled to be represented at Area and Annual Conference of the Association, providing that its audited accounts for the preceding year have been submitted to Area Headquarters, no less than ten days before the first day of Conference. Lapsed members As at 31 July, the Area had 657 Ordinary members and 627 Associate members who had not yet renewed for this year. It is incumbent upon all of us to try and recover these lapsed members. Once again we ask all branches to make every effort to personally contact those of their members who have not yet renewed. It should not be forgotten that a personal visit or phone call to someone who has not yet renewed their membership may highlight an underlying welfare problem.

Personal Data Privacy – branches and clubs

The Association has a legal obligation to protect personal data in conformance with UK data protection legislation (currently the Data Protection Act (DPA) 1998). The Association’s Personal Data Privacy Policy, together with the associated Standard Operating Procedures, describe the measures necessary for the Association and its members to comply with the DPA. At branch level this means that any personal data held about branch members must only be used for legitimate Association purposes and that all personal data must be kept under strict control and not inadvertently shared or made available for unauthorised use. The Association is only able to share personal data with branch officials who have agreed to use such data in compliance with the policy and have signed the annual Certificate of Compliance for the protection of personal data. Some of our branches and clubs have not yet returned the signed certificate regarding compliance with the Data Protection Act, which was sent out earlier this year. Until these certificates are returned, we are not able to provide those branches or clubs with membership lists. We would request those branches that have not yet returned their certificate to do so as soon as possible. If required, further copies of the certificate can be found on the Members Log-In Section of the RAF Association website or from the Area Headquarters by email request to: [email protected].

Email addresses We would be grateful if Branch Secretaries would encourage those members who have email addresses, but do not yet receive the Area newsletter electronically, to get in touch with the Area Headquarters to ensure we have their email address recorded.

Standard bearers – dress regulations Standard bearers are reminded that the guide for branch standard bearers is at Chapter 8 of the Admin Handbook. Contained within this chapter at paragraph 8.3 is guidance on the wearing of medals. This states: “When applicable, full sized medals should be worn on all parades and ceremonies. Standard bearers should not wear commemorative or other unofficial medals. No insignia or badges should be worn except that of the Association”. A Veterans badge in addition to the Association’s badge is also acceptable.

Wings Portal closure Branches who have previously registered to use the Wings Portal to submit your Wings Appeal income should be aware of the following notice regarding closure of the portal. The system was originally designed to help branches by providing a more convenient mechanism for the return of Wings monies. However, as you may be aware, it has not proven as user-friendly as intended and, increasingly, the very small number of branches using it have been experiencing problems which have actually made the whole process more time-consuming than if they had used the paper-based Wings Returns (WR) packs. Coupled with this, the Association has been undertaking a large-scale review of IT security, given the rapidly evolving cyber crime threats that threaten all organisations. There have been tests carried out on the Wings Portal and the findings are that it would require significant and costly development to ensure it continues to be secure in the face of newly emerging threats. For both reasons, the decision has been taken that it is in the best interests of the Association to stop using the current Wings Portal with immediate effect. We therefore ask branches complete their 2017 Wings Appeal returns by using the WR packs rather than online through the portal, which will be disabled in the very near future. Generic versions of the WR packs are available on the Wings Appeal order form (which has been sent to your branch’s Wings Appeal Organiser in their April Wings newsletter) under the section ‘Wings Appeal Letters, Posters and Leaflets’. They are also available directly from www.rafashop.com under the Wings Appeal section. Later in the year, a pack that is specific to your branch will be sent to your branch’s Wings Appeal Organiser in their July Wings Newsletter. These packs will have the branch’s bank details printed on so the branch can confirm they are up to date prior to any welfare rebate or Wings expenses payments being processed. Full instructions on how to fill out the forms are included in the pack including how payment of the funds raised can be forwarded to the Wings Appeal team by cheque or electronic bank transfer. Thank you for your continuing support of the Wings Appeal. We are only able to raise the fantastic amounts we do through the dedication of people like yourself, your other branch members and all volunteers who support the branch. RAFA Colour Chaos On 20 August this year, at 1100hrs at RAF Wittering, the inaugural RAFA Colour Chaos will take place. To take part the entrance fee is £20 for 16 years and over, with those 5 to 15 years attracting a £5 entrance fee. Under 5s are free. The event itself is open to all; serving personnel and their families, members of the public; in fact everyone! Unfortunately, dogs and other pets are not allowed. Participants can register by clicking on the following link: https://www.rafa.org.uk/rafacolourchaos/ or by calling the Challenge Events Team 0116 268 8790

Cenotaph Ceremony - London - 12 November 2017 The Royal British Legion (RBL), on behalf of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, will be organising the ex-service contingents attending the Parade and Service at the Cenotaph, Whitehall on Remembrance Sunday, 12 November 2017. The MOD, Cobseo and RBL have agreed priorities for the allocation of tickets, these priorities are:

• Category 1: Ex-Service Personnel holding a campaign medal • Category 2: Civilians deployed on operations in support of the Military (e.g. Merchant Navy, Police, Fire

Service, Ambulance Service, Civil Servants) • Category 3: Ex-Service Personnel with no campaign medal • Category 4: Bereaved Spouses (of those who died on operations) • Category 5: Veteran Association representatives • Category 6: Military Charities and associated Civilian groups • Carers assisting someone in the above six categories can also apply for a ticket

This year a representative of the Overseas Area will lay the Association’s wreath; stewards will also be positioned at the Cenotaph to lay wreaths on behalf of the detachments as they march past. Contingents will assemble and disperse at Horse Guards Parade Due to the number of personnel on parade the overall length of the march past has increased and I would ask you to ensure that your members are aware of the physical demands of standing in Whitehall for at least one hour and then marching for a distance of 1.5 miles, possibly in inclement weather. We have been asked to remind all on parade to help to ensure that behaviour and dress standards match the dignity of the occasion. There have been a few rather regrettable lapses that have offended the majority of those marching and the general public. Due to heightened security measures all those with allocated tickets will need to carry a form of photo ID on the day together with a document showing proof of address for access to Horse Guards Parade via the manned police entry points. The Metropolitan Police will need to conduct individual security checks on all participants. Basic personal information will need to be provided when applying for tickets for each applicant: This consists of: Title/Rank First name (This must be the name on photo ID) Last name Date of birth Place of birth First Line of address Town Postcode Service Number (where applicable) In view of the current security arrangements, only holders of admission tickets will be allowed to join the parade. A ticket allocated to an individual is not transferable. All participants are liable to a security search on the day.

Page 12: South East and Eastern Area Newsletter - RAF A

12

The South East and Eastern Area Headquarters will be administering the ticket allocation for the event this year. We would therefore be grateful to receive applications for tickets, together with the required information above, by 8 September 2017. Royal Air Force Centenary Celebrations – RAF100 On 1 April 2018 the RAF will mark the centenary of its formation as the world’s first independent air force. This will be an important opportunity for those in the RAF and the RAF family to commemorate their past, celebrate their success and also inspire the public as to their contribution to the UK’s national security and prosperity. The RAF100 programme of events will start in October 2017 and end in September 2018 and a number of flagship events will take place across the UK between March and September 2018 including a service in Westminster Abbey and a parade along The Mall, followed by a Royal Salute and flypast. The four main RAF charities (RAF Association, RAF Benevolent Fund, RAF Charitable Trust Enterprises and RAF Museum) have taken the unprecedented step of creating a joint venture charitable company, the RAF100 Appeal Ltd. Its purpose is to deliver a coherent and collaborative campaign raising both income and profile. More information about RAF100 can be found here: www.raf.mod.uk/raf100. There is also an opportunity to put forward any ideas that will help COMMEMORATE the achievements of the RAF and all who served, CELEBRATE the RAF of today, or INSPIRE people in your local community and beyond: www.raf.mod.uk/raf100/your-ideas Further updates will be given as more information becomes available. The RAF Association President’s Band

The RAF Association President’s Band is a successful and friendly band that performs music to a high standard and is comprised of approximately 40 talented players, including former RAF and military band musicians, music teachers, and many other walks of life. It gives regular performances around London and the south east of England, and has toured Ypres in Belgium, where it took part in a major Remembrance festival, France, Luxembourg, Brussels and most recently Malta. The band has also played at several RAF Association conferences including; Eastbourne, Hayling Island, Bexhill, and Bracklesham Bay. If your branch is planning an event you might consider hiring the RAF Association President’s Band for the occasion, or two or more branches might get together to hold a concert to raise money for the Wings Appeal. For more information visit the website at www.rafapbmusic.org or contact the Band Manager at [email protected] or 07776 258763.
