At South Devon College, there’s never been a better time to invest in your future and study locally. The courses we deliver at our Newton Abbot Campus have been designed to meet the needs of the local community, offering training and guidance to learners of all ages and backgrounds.
The College is committed to investing in new opportunities for students in South Devon, and our Newton Abbot Campus continues to grow. The Campus is located in the centre of town and is just a short walk away from the train
station, with excellent transport links through bus travel, which the College can help support financially.
We have a range of courses and apprenticeship frameworks for learners of all ages, focusing on a variety of trades and specialisms, including: automotive, carpentry, brickwork, electrical installation, hairdressing, nail technologies, painting and decorating and plumbing.

of your career, whether that’s preparing for employment, higher education or finding a suitable employer to begin an apprenticeship with.

YOUR #1 COLLEGEIn 2014 we were delighted to be recognised as the top Further Education and Tertiary College in England, based on results for 2012-13, published by the Skills Funding Agency. The results, which are based on our learner success rates and retention, confirm our standing as a leading Further Education establishment and the only place to consider for your future.
We topped the result tables for all ages and course durations, with a success rate of 94.7%, as well as achieving the highest success rates for full-time courses for 16-18 year olds, with 93% of our learners achieving their qualifications.
The results came as no surprise, thanks to our exceptional learning environment and staff members, all of whom inspire our learners of varying backgrounds to achieve and exceed their potential on a daily basis.

YOUR LOCAL COLLEGEThe facilities at our Newton Abbot Campus give you the best possible learning environment, with the latest industry-standard equipment and expert teaching, in sectors and disciplines that have numerous employment opportunities in the local community.
Apprenticeships, Careers and Training CentreThe Apprenticeships, Careers and Training Centre is open to members of the public, and provides free guidance to help you in your career. You can find us at Pearl Assurance House, from 9:00am – 5:00pm Monday to Thursday, and 9:00am - 4:30pm on Fridays.
Construction and Building Services Skills CentreThe Construction and Building Services Skills Centre is also located at our Bradley Lane facility, with fully-equipped workshops to develop practical skills in a number of essential trades, including: brickwork, carpentry, electrical services, painting and decorating and plumbing.
Automotive Skills CentreOur purpose-built workshop at Bradley Lane is home to the Automotive Skills Centre, where we deliver automotive courses from Level 1 to industry-recognised Level 3, as well as apprenticeships. Students develop essential practical skills in our fully equipped workshops and our automotive diagnostic laboratory.
Hair and Nails Skills AcademyOur Hair and Nails Skills Academy is found at Pearl Assurance House, and includes a fully equipped hairdressing and nail salon. We offer hair and nail treatments to members of the public, so learners develop experience in a real working environment.
Into Education and Employment Training Skills AcademyAt Pearl Assurance House, we deliver Into Education and Employment courses, which are designed to help learners prepare for employment, traineeships, apprenticeships or further study. Information, Advice and GuidanceOur Matrix accredited Helpzone offers free careers information, advice and guidance to both students and members of the public. Our friendly team have a wide knowledge of every area of the College and provide impartial advice, so you can be sure your best interests are met.
This support can be accessed through the Apprenticeships, Careers and Training Centre, situated at Pearl Assurance House on Courtenay Street.
Free equipment and transportWe are pleased to be able to offer a range of support for students who are either starting or continuing their studies with us in September 2015, including bursaries and travel support.
South Devon College is linked to an outstanding public transport network with services all over South Devon, and fantastic deals available to our students.
The College is committed to providing free bus travel to all full-time students aged between 16 and 18 who live more than 3 miles from the College and have a household income of less than £21,000 per year. Eligible students also receive support paying for essential equipment necessary to their course.
For students with a household income greater than £21,000 per year, discounted travel is still available through our excellent transport deals, with bus passes available from as little as £7 per week.
In 2013/14 we provided over 1,100 free passes and 500 discounted passes to our 16-18 students, saving them money and allowing them to focus on what matters - their studies.
Learning SupportAt South Devon College, we take our responsibility to support your learning very seriously.
A member of our dedicated Learning Support Team will be available to meet with you and put a specific support plan together for you.
The type of support we can offer includes:

■ Extra support with English and maths
■ Assignment support
Personal TutorsAll full-time students at South Devon College have a dedicated Personal Tutor to make sure that all the support you need is in place to successfully complete your studies. Personal Tutors will discuss your work, assist with any study problems, advise on career opportunities or help you with any personal problems that may arise.

OverviewThe Automotive Skills Centre is an extremely well-equipped, technologically advanced training facility, located at Bradley Lane. From here, we provide an extensive range of practical skills and knowledge, with full and part-time learning programmes for learners of all ages.
The courses we deliver are shaped by the needs of the motor industry, ensuring we develop skills that are relevant to the sector and increase your employability. Our courses are designed to provide a progression route from the basics of vehicle maintenance through to more in-depth skills.
The Skills Centre boasts two light vehicle workshops, a specialist strip and rebuild area, an automotive diagnostic laboratory and purpose-built, interactive classrooms, providing you with a fantastic learning environment for both practical and theoretical skills.
With a range of courses on offer, these programmes are challenging and rewarding for every individual student, and provide a clear progression route to entering this dynamic and fast-moving industry.
Specialist training is also available on request.

OverviewThe Hair and Beauty Skills Academy is a creative and stimulating learning environment to study towards a range of qualifications in the hair and beauty therapy industry. On the first floor of Pearl Assurance House you will find our training salons, complete with the latest equipment and training tools.
The courses taught here can be full-time, part-time or evening course formats, so you can find a programme of study that suits your needs. During your studies you will develop practical skills that will prepare you well for future employment or progression to further qualifications.
The courses have been designed to meet the needs of local employers in the industry, and will cover basic topics through to more advanced techniques. Our salon is open to members of the public, which creates a realistic working environment that provides valuable experience as a health or beauty therapy professional.
INTO EDUCATION AND EMPLOYMENTOur Into Education and Employment courses are personalised programmes that suit your style of learning and are designed to help you achieve your goals. Whether that’s preparing for employment, a traineeship, an apprenticeship or moving on to further education, we will ensure you develop the skills and confidence to get there.
The programme focuses on three key areas to help you succeed, which includes:
■ Functional skills in English and maths
■ Personal and social development
■ Employability skills
There’s an opportunity to participate in work experience and community projects, and you will also have the chance to develop skills in areas that affect your personal development and wellbeing, such as healthy living, budgeting and cookery.
There are no formal entry requirements, you just need to be 16-18 with an ambition to learn and succeed. Courses run throughout the year across South Devon. After completing the programme, you’ll have the perfect foundation to take the next step in your education or career.

APPRENTICESHIPS AND TRAINEESHIPS
Get the best of both worlds with an apprenticeship or traineeship at South Devon College.
Apprenticeships and traineeships are the perfect option for you if you want to study towards a qualification to boost your career whilst getting paid. By working in your chosen trade or sector, you’ll be developing vocational experience and putting the skills you learn at the College into practice, giving you the ideal preparation for starting a career.
Our support team will also assist you in finding a suitable employer for your apprenticeship, utilising our dedicated Jobshop service. We can help give you the tools and information to identify an employer to kick-start your training and career.
If you don’t feel quite ready for an apprenticeship, a traineeship is a fantastic opportunity to
develop the essential skills to help you transition onto a full apprenticeship programme.
Traineeships work similarly to apprenticeships, with functional training at College and a work placement, and we can offer traineeship pathways in almost every area of study.

ADULT LEARNINGWe have a range of provision and support packages that cater to adults, meaning that whatever your background or circumstances are, we can find the right course for you.
Teacher TrainingOur Teacher Training provision is perfect for those looking to use their experience and skills to inspire a new generation of learners. We can cater to people interested in teaching and assessing in a wide variety of careers, whether it’s for recreational classes, training providers or professional qualifications.
The Award in Education and Training is the perfect introductory course, assessed at Level 3 and completed over 5 or 10 weeks.
The qualification enables you to identify the principles of learning, teaching, assessment and evaluation, and develops your
confidence, communication and inter-personal skills.
There are no formal entry requirements, but you must be considering a subject for delivery and have a qualification in your chosen field. You will need to attend an interview prior to starting the course.
English, maths and essential skillsAlmost every job requires the ability to read, write and use numbers confidently, which is why English and maths form a key part of your learning with us. Not only will these skills boost your job prospects and improve your CV, but also give you the knowledge you need for day-to-day life outside of your career.
We also develop your learning and study skills to ensure that you make the most out of your time here and achieve your potential.
24+ Advanced Learning LoansIf you are 24 or over and starting a Level 3 or Level 4 course (some exceptions apply) with South Devon College, you can receive a loan to help fund your studies.
Regardless of your current employment status, or the previous qualifications you have attained, you may apply for a loan. The loan will not be means-tested and you will not have to undergo any credit checks.
The amount you can borrow will range from a minimum of £300 to a maximum that is equal to the cost of your course. You will not have to pay this back until you earn in excess of £21,000 and not before April 2016 (whichever is first).
