South Devon College Careers Programme 2018/19This Careers programme has been developed in consultation with the Senior Leadership Team, Governors and Tutorial and Progress Managers having been informed by student and employer feedback. The programme aims to fulfil Gatsby Benchmarks and meet Careers Development Institute framework elements including Self-Development, Careers Exploration and Career Management. Each individual study programme offers a range of activities including attendance to external events, participation with community projects, visits from industry experts, work experience opportunities and LMI in the specific sector. These activities are informed by regular sector focus group meetings with industry leaders, research and staff undertaking Continuous Professional Development.

What is LMI? Labour Market Information basically tells us what jobs are available and where. It also covers additional information such as average salaries, skill requirements and number of current or projected vacancies. It helps inform the career planning process if young people have exposure to many possible careers options including those which don’t yet exist.

Open EventsSpeak to industry experts from a broad range of sectors and education professionals for advice on career pathways, training and progression opportunities.

Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation TrustTorbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust provides acute healthcare services from Torbay Hospital, and community health services and adult social care. The Trust pride themselves on being an advocate for the apprenticeships programme. As well as employing over 100 apprentices themselves, they contribute to the delivery of training, with over 200 healthcare apprenticeships delivered last year, and proudly work with South Devon College across all levels of apprenticeship delivery.

Spirent Communications“I think it’s really great to have some young people in the place, and I think they are very important. We’ve seen with our apprentices that they soon become a key employee.”Caroline Lee- Chair of Governors at South Devon College

Flossy and Jim“I studied for a FdA in Illustration Arts as a mature student single parent. I was apprehensive about returning to study, but I was soon made to feel welcome. The course was challenging, fun and informative. On completion of my course I proceeded to the University of Plymouth to complete my BA (Hons) Illustration degree. After my studies, I set up my own illustration business with my partner James called ‘Flossy and Jim’. We are now a registered brand working for major global companies. Our illustrations have been published in several children’s books worldwide, used in cartoons, and used on a global messenger app. I’m extremely happy I completed my course at University Centre South Devon, as it’s given me the freedom to do a job I love!”Lynette Jordan
