Wednesday 20 Aug 2014 - Term 3 Week 6
But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming..... we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells. 2 Peter 3:10-13 We have been working through “God’s Plan” (the timeline in the Hall and the training staff received at the beginning of the year) in devotions this term and recently we looked at the promised New Heaven and New Earth. As Peter says we “ought to live holy and godly lives” as we look forward to heaven. In addition Peter says that we are to “make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him” and to “be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position”. My prayer is that we will all live in this manner as we look forward to Jesus’ return and that we will encourage our children to live in the same way as they work and relate within our community. Athletics carnivals:
Congratulations to all of our competitors that competed in the two zone carnivals over the first two days of last week. Monday was a very good day with staff, parents and students enjoying the day, in spite of the cool breeze with students displaying a great attitude towards their competition and a wonderful sportsmanlike attitude – congratulations to all concerned and thanks to staff and parents that assisted on the day. Tuesday saw a very different day with temperatures dropping, periods of rain and a very cool breeze. The secondary students that competed were a credit to the school and their families and are to be
commended for their effort and perseverance in extreme conditions with many cold and wet students before the day was out. Well done to all concerned and thank you to the parents that attended and encouraged the students throughout the day. Thank you to Mr Graham and Mrs Gold for your work in organising the teams and events – well done! South Coast Public Speaking Competition:
Last night I had the pleasure of attending the South Coast Public Speaking Competition at Bellambi that eight of our secondary students competed in. They were a credit to the school and their families (many of who also attended) as they displayed significant leadership in presenting their ideas and in many cases took a Christian stand in what they presented. These students have been working hard for some time as they prepared and practised their speeches on various topics and over different lengths depending on their age. Congratulations to Ethan de Jong, Lydia Funcik, David Cuthbertson, Liam Brown, Naomi Boulton, Joy Chayna, Eden Williams and Emily Monro who all competed brilliantly with Emily winning her section and Eden coming third in hers – a wonderful result for the first time in this competition – congratulations to all! The students came away excited and keen to be involved again next year. Thank you also to Mrs Batten for her organisation and support of the students as
they prepared for the competition.

Give thanks for the Year 12 who have been able to manage their studies over the past few
weeks as they sat their HSC Trials and completed Major Works. Pray for them as they
receive their exam results and continue in preparation for their HSC
Pray for Year 11 as they prepare for their final Preliminary Exams commencing next week.
Pray for staff and students who are unwell. There are quite a number on the sick list. Pray
that they will make a speedy recovery and return quickly to school.
Pray for continued safety for all those involved in sporting events and excursions in the
coming weeks.
Pray against the persecution in Northern Iraq. Pray for safety and strength as the
Christians flee from the Islamic Militants, and that those persecuted will continue to trust
Jesus in their terror. Pray that the persecutors meet Jesus and that justice and mercy is
seen.

Building a Bridge Challenge
On Tuesday 5th August Year 9A Maths were given 6 drinking
straws, 2 sticky address labels, 2 maths textbooks, a ruler
and a pair of scissors.
They were then told to place the books on their desks with a
gap of 20cm between them. The books were to represent
the banks of a fast flowing river, infested with leeches and
people-eating crocodiles.
They were given 30 minutes to construct a bridge using only
the straws and name labels. This bridge was tested at the
end of 30 minutes to see which bridge could hold the most
weight.
The winning group consisted of: Spencer
Blunden, Karen Hackenberg, Andrew
Imisides and Shiarna Stafford. Their bridge
was able to hold a total of 6 AA batteries
along with 3 weights without showing any
signs of collapsing. They each received a
merit certificate and a Freddo frog for their
construction efforts.
All the students enjoyed the activity and have a better
understanding of how Trigonometry can help in the
construction of bridges in real life.

Readers Needed.
Mrs Knight is looking to set up a roster of enthusiastic Parents and Grandparents who are willing to come on a weekly basis (or more often if you wish) to listen to students read. The focus is on students in Year 3,4,5,6 but parents/grandparents from any year are welcome. We are trying to build the confidence and fluency of oral reading for some of our students. Information will be given on the 'Pause, Prompt, Praise' method that compliments the MULTILIT program that some of our students are doing. Students will also have some individually assigned sight words to read as well. If you would like to be a part of this exciting program please see Mrs Knight or email her at [email protected]. Thank you.

Infants Learns
about Pets!
Last Wednesday, Infants had some visitors come from the Pet Ownership Education Program. Mrs Spears from the Pet Ownership Education Program brought her black poodle Jetta along to meet the children. Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 learnt about dog safety, identification and registration, security and housing, empathy and dangerous dogs. Students learnt how to approach a dog and the rules and steps of patting a dog. The students had a lovely afternoon learning about pets and especially enjoyed meeting Mrs Spears' dog Jetta.

Football @ Tongarra
Term 3 has already been busy with High School teams competing at both Zone and State competitions of football. Students travelled to South Nowra early in the term for the Zone competition, with teams entered into the Opens and U15’s division for both boys and girls. Some great football was on display, with results showing significant improvement has been made by students from Tongarra. Nowhere was this more apparent than in the Open Girls team who were undefeated on the day (3 wins, 1 draw) and won their division. The U15 Girls also showed improvement (2 wins, 2 losses) often outplaying their opponents’ even if the score-line went against them.
Both boys’ teams were courageous throughout the day; the U15’s playing without any substitutes and the Open Boys playing one player short. Despite their lack of numbers the Open Boys were undefeated (1 win, 3 draws) and the U15’s lost a few very close games (2 draws, 2 losses).
Top Performers: U15 Girls: Karen Hackenberg, Tayla Jabbour, Chloe Cignarella, Tatum Barrington
U15 Boys: Ben Markoulis, Lachlan Rowe, Vaughan Hawke
Open Girls: Kiarnay Smith, Kathryn Karpouzis, Apryl Johnson, Jessica Cignarella
Open Boys: Sandy Lowcock, Matt Cignarella, Jye Tarne
As the Open Girls won their division, they qualified for the State competition and travelled to Penrith to face some sterner opponents. Playing against a higher level of football the games were much closer than at Zone level. The Open Girls finished 3rd in their pool (2 draws, 1 loss), narrowly missing out on the semi finals. Overall the girls finished 5th in the State – Well Done to the Open Girls!

The Secondary School Age Champions for Athletics in 2014 are:
Zone Athletics The CSSA South Coast Athletics Carnival was held in less than ideal conditions last week. With temperatures barely reaching double digits and rain on-and-off throughout the day, keeping warm was a priority when not competing. Despite the cool weather, the competition was hot on the track and in the field. The students from Tongarra competed admirably throughout the day with some excellent performances. In total 16 students qualified for State Athletics, which will be held at Homebush on the 27th of August. Special congratulations also goes to Ben Markoulis and Kathryn Karpouzis who were the Age Champions at the Zone carnival. Ben also set a new record in the U14 Boys 400m, taking 0.5 sec off the previous record! Mr Graham

Infants Make Spaghetti Towers!
Last week in Science, Infants students planned and investigated how to make spaghetti towers. The students were required to draw a picture of what they were going to build. In the next lesson students were given a piece of paper, 10 marshmallows and a handful of raw spaghetti. Students in pairs made a tower on the A4 piece of paper. It was very interesting to see how the students tackled this task. Some used trial and error and others changed their plan as they went. Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 thoroughly enjoyed these lessons. This term we have been learning about how things change. Students later on in the term will have another turn at making towers but with different materials. Mrs Eastman and Miss Yeo
