CAREER CONNECTIONS As counselors wrap up their meetings with juniors, I have been meeting with those who have expressed an interest in an internship during their senior year. In March, I will be distributing applications and parent permission forms needed in order to pursue an internship. If your student is interested and has not yet met with me they can still make an appointment through the counseling center or with me to discuss and internship. Internships are directly related to the student’s coursework. Meeting with a counselor or myself during 3rd quarter can insure the student has the classes needed in order to intern in their field of their choice. Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] Terry Adkins Career Coordinator

SCHS CAFETERIA INFORMATION Students may purchase lunch and/or snacks from our cafeteria. They may also bring a lunch from home. The menus can

be found at: https://carrollk12.nutrislice.com/menu/

Please do not have food delivered or drop off food to the school including, but not limited to, pizza and fast food. This is

due to the monitoring of our visitor’s management system.

School lunch shifts are not open to parents. We monitor three lunch shifts with up to 350 people in our cafeteria for each

shift. The size of our campus and security measures makes it difficult to invite parents and only allow them access to their

child. Thank you for understanding.

Thank you! – SCHS Cafeteria

► Preparation for Students Interested in Dual Enrollment for Fall 2020

1) Student and parent meet with the high school counselor to plan and review eligibility and begin paperwork. This meeting should be held before mid-April!

2) Student applies to CCC online at https://www.carrollcc.edu/Apply-and-Register/ 3) Student takes Placement Tests if necessary.

a. Students with a 3.0 GPA may not need to take the English/ Reading portion of the test. b. Preparing for the placement tests is strongly encouraged. At the time of testing, you need to provide a

completed enrollment application signed by your parent/guardian. If you have taken the SATs or ACTs, a 530+ SAT math or 480+ Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score or a 21+ ACT math, verbal or English score can exempt you for the math, reading and English placement tests. A math SAT score of 570+ or ACT 24+ will provide placement into pre-calculus. Although, those higher level math courses may still require math placement testing regardless of SAT or ACT scores. You will need to provide documentation of your scores.

c. For students that need to take the Accuplacer:

Walk-in placement testing is available. Exceptions exist for holidays & final exams. See Testing Center's hours.

Placement Testing Checklist: ▪ Call the Admissions office at 410-386-8430 before you arrive to verify that times have not

changed. Walk-in placement testing hours are subject to change during holidays, heavy testing and exam times.

▪ Complete your enrollment application online 48 hours prior to testing. ▪ Contact Disability Support Services at 410-386-8327 or 410-386-8329 for disability-related test

accommodations prior to testing. ▪ Provide a photo ID (driver's license preferred) at the time of testing. ▪ Arrive 15 minutes prior to test time and check-in with Admissions. Allow 2 1/2 to 3 hours to

complete the tests.

4) Student meets with an admission counselor to register for college courses. The high school Dual Enrollment form is required at this meeting.

► Financial Aid Award Letter Information

Source: https://www.mefa.org/sample-financial-aid-award-letter/

When you receive a financial aid award letter, the first thing you should do is review it carefully. It’s important that you know the types of aid being offered, understand other details that are provided, and are aware of information that may not be included in the letter.

Types and Sources of Financial Aid

1. Grants/Scholarships: These are “gift aid” or free funds, which means that you don’t have to repay them. Your letter may include grants and scholarships from the federal government, your state government, or the college itself.

2. Federal Work-Study: These are funds that are available for you to earn during the academic year through part-time employment.

3. Student Loans: These are funds that you borrow, to be repaid after you leave school. Your letter may include several types of loans with varying features.

As you review your award letter, keep in mind that:

▪Your financial aid will be divided between the fall and spring semesters.

▪The letter may not list the school’s total Cost of Attendance (COA).

▪The letter may not indicate your remaining balance after the aid is applied (also called the “net price”).

▪You may need to take action to accept the award, such as sign and return the letter or accept the award online.

▪You are permitted to decline parts of the award, such as a loan.

If you have special circumstances that you think warrants you to receive additional financial aid, contact the college’s financial aid office. You may be able to submit additional information and documentation to be considered for greater financial aid (often called the “appeal process”). Reasons to submit an appeal may include:

▪A recent job loss or reduction in income

▪Unusual medical, dental, or disability expenses

▪Nursing home or unusually high childcare costs

▪Home damage caused by natural disaster

The appeal process can vary from college to college, so be sure to follow the instructions provided by each financial aid office.

► So you have been waitlisted… What to do next:

• Pat yourself on the back – you wouldn’t be waitlisted if you didn’t meet the basic admission requirements. Good job!

• Decide if you really want to go to that particular school.

Page 6: South Carroll High School 2020.pdfSCHS Parent/Teacher Conference Evening March 5th – 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. 2 hour, 45 minute Early Dismissal System-wide March 6th Band Booster Bingo

• Write a letter to the admissions office. Advise them of any new achievements, awards, or anything else positive you can share. Emphasize how much you want to attend. Indicate that, if accepted, you WILL attend. (Of course, only if that is true!)

• Request an interview.

• Remember that most waitlist decisions aren’t made until after the May 1 deadline.

• If you are accepted off a waitlist, congratulations! Notify the other school that you will not be attending. Then, of course, notify the wait-listed school that you will be. You will most likely lose your other deposit.

► What to Do If You Don't Get Accepted to College

(From www.petersons.com and www.foxbusiness.com)

It can be a shock to get a rejection letter instead of a college admission letter, especially when you know you're qualified. Competition for college admission has grown, due in large part to things like the increased emphasis on higher education and the simple fact that there are more people going to college. This often affects the process in ways you might not expect. In other words, what you think is a less competitive school may be harder to get in to than you realize. At any rate, it makes sense to be prepared.

As colleges start sending out acceptance letters to hopeful high school seniors, some students may find themselves in the worst-case scenario: receiving only rejection letters. If a student is left holding nothing but rejection letters that doesn’t mean the college dream is over.

• Find Out Why You Weren’t Admitted - The experts suggest students contact admissions offices to get a better understanding of why they were rejected and to find out if the school accepts appeals. Sometimes a student's record isn't complete, and the student can provide new information that maybe wasn't a part of the application.

• Improve Your Credentials and Try Again - If you have your heart set on a particular school, consider re-applying for the following semester. Take the time off to learn new skills or improve test scores to show the admissions officers that you are a serious contender.

• Check Out Schools With Rolling Admissions - Many higher education institutions have rolling admissions policies that start in the fall and continue through the summer. You can also look at colleges with late admissions.

• Enroll in Your Local Community College - The experts agree that a community college can serve as a good transition to a college atmosphere. The bright side? First off, you can save a lot of money. Another advantage is that most two-year colleges have arrangements with state schools, and will allow you to transfer as a junior when you're done.

• Don’t Forget the Trade Schools - There are many quality trade and technical schools out there where students can learn a very specific career-related field. From the construction trades to business programs to medical/health related fields and much more, it’s a great way to continue your education and build your resume.

• Stay Positive - The ideal college planning process involves just that: planning. But things happen to affect your college acceptance, and whatever you do, don't get discouraged. There are tons of options. If you commit to finding a solution, it may take a little work, but you'll be happily enrolled before you know it.
