Montague Ave. Suite A-200 - North Charleston, SC 29418 South Carolina Visits Norfolk Scope For Wednesday Night Matchup The South Carolina Stingrays will play their final game of the 2019-20 season at the Norfolk Scope against the Admirals on Wednesday night to begin a busy 4-game week that includes two road contests and two home matchups. The Rays and Ads have faced-off three times since the league’s All-Star break in late January and the road team has won all three matchups. On Jan. 24-25, SC came away with a sweep at the Scope with victories by 4-1 and 3-0 scores. Then on Jan. 31, the Admirals came from behind in the third period to best the Rays, 8-6. Most recently, the Stingrays dropped a contest to Jacksonville at home on Sunday afternoon by a score of 6-3. Norfolk suffered a pair of home losses to Jacksonville last weekend, 5-1 and 7-3. Wednesday’s matchup is the 10th of 12 meetings between the two teams this season and South Carolina has posted a 6-2-1 record in the first nine contests. South Carolina allows a league-low 2.25 goals per game while boasting the top penalty kill in the league at 90.1%. Norfolk is in seventh place in the division standings with 29 points. Icemen Best Stingrays Sunday Afternoon The Jacksonville Icemen earned their first victory of the season over the South Carolina Stingrays on Sunday afternoon by a score of 6-3 at the North Charleston Coliseum. Forwards Andrew Cherniwchan, Cole Ully and Tim Harrison each scored for the Stingrays in a losing effort, while forward Mark Cooper tallied two assists. The Rays entered the third trailing by only a goal, but the Icemen scored the next three and opened up a big lead during the final frame. SOUTH CAROLINA STINGRAYS HOCKEYSOUTH CAROLINA STINGRAYS HOCKEYScouting The AdmiralsNorfolk has a lot of ground to make up during the second halfof the season after a slow start to the year, currently sitting inseventh place in the South Division with a record of 12-31-5and 29 points. Forward Josh Holmstrom leads the club offensively this year with 27 points on eight goals and 19 assists. Just behind him, Roman Ammirato, who recently playedin the ECHL’s All-Star Classic after he was acquired earlier thsseason in a trade with Greenville, has 18 points in 24 games with the Ads on four goals and 14 assists. Rookie attacker Alex Rodriguez has a team-high 11 goals as well as 19 total points. Defender Johnny Coughlin leads the team’s blueliners with 16 points (8g, 8a). In net, the Admirals have hit the reset button after losing both of their goaltenders last week. Currently it is netminders Sean Romeo and Jake Theut manning the crease.

All-Time History vs. Norfolk South Carolina has an all-time record of 31-23-2-3 against theAdmirals dating back to the beginning of the 2015-16 season. TheRays went 6-1-1 against Norfolk in eight meetings during 2017-18,but were just 2-6-0 against the Ads last year in 2018-19. This seasonthe two teams will see each other for 12 games, which is tied withOrlando for the Stingrays’ most common opponent on their 2019-20 slate. The Rays have won six of the first nine meetings betweenthe two clubs this year.

Cherniwchan Leading The Way Team captain Andrew Cherniwchan had a goal and an assist last week and reached the 40-point mark for the second consecutive season. His goal on Sunday was his team-leading 20th of the year, which ranks 14th in the ECHL. The captain has racked up 163 shots on goal this season, which is third-most among all ECHL skaters.

Troock Finding His Stride Forward Branden Troock had a team-high three points on two goals and an assist last week, his second as a member of the Stingrays. The Edmonton, Alberta native has four points in his first five games since his trade from Toledo to South Carolina on two goals and two assists. Overall this season, Troock has tallied 17 points on eight goals and nine assists in 21 games. During parts of six pro campaigns, the forward has appeared in 121 ECHL games, scoring 101 points (45 goals, 56 assists).

Harrison Nearing Career-High Forward Tim Harrison netted his seventh goal of the year on Sunday afternoon and is now just one away from his career-high of eight goals which he set during his rookie season with Adirondack in 2017-18. Harrison will have a chance to face the Thunder for the first time since he was dealt to SC on Friday night. The Duxbury, Mass. native has found success against Jacksonville this year, scoring four of his seven tallies against the Icemen.

SOUTH CAROLINA STINGRAYS HOCKEYLeaders Against Norfolk Forward Dan DeSalvo leads the Stingrays in scoring this seasonagainst the Admirals, posting 13 of his 43 total points on five goals and eight assists in nine games. Max Novak has also been a big part of the team’s offense in the series with six goals and six assists for 12 points. Mark Cooper has picked up nine points on three goals and six assists, while defender Tom Parisi has also been a big factor on the offensive end, scoring nine points on three goals and six assists. Goaltender Parker Milner has three wins in five appearances against the Admirals, while Logan Thompson is 2-1 in three starts. Thompson has the better numbers with a goals-against average at 2.34 and a 0.914 save percentage.

Weis Returns To South Carolina The Hershey Bears announced the reassignment of forward Matthew Weis to the Rays on Tuesday. The 24-year-old attacker was recalled to Hershey for the second time during the 2019-20 season on Jan. 16 and saw action in four games with the Bears. Weis has played in 29 games with South Carolina this season and scored 24 points on seven goals and 17 assists while adding a +14 rating. The Freehold, N.J. native signed an AHL contract with the Bears in July after skating in 60 games as a rookie during 2018-19 with the AHL’s Chicago Wolves and earning 11 points on three goals and eight assists. Weis also appeared in 22 playoff games with Chicago the team’s run to the Calder Cup Finals last spring.

Top-Ranked Penalty Kill South Carolina currently has the best penalty killing percentage in the ECHL, discarding 90.1% of their opponents’ power play opportunities during the 2019-20 season. In 182 times shorthanded this season, the Rays have allowed just 18 power play goals. SC has been particularly good on the penalty kill in their 22 home contests, allowing just seven goals during 79 power play chances to give themselves a 91.1% success rate which also leads the league. On the road, South Carolina has killed off 89.3% of their 103 penalties.

Stingrays Earn 2-1 Win To Sweep Solar BearsForwards Branden Troock and Cam Askew scored second period goals and goaltender Parker Milner turned aside 39 shots as the South Carolina Stingrays earned their second win in as many days over the Orlando Solar Bears by a 2-1 score on Friday night at the Amway Center. The sweep gave South Carolina 72 total points on the year which leads the South Division and Eastern Conference. The Stingrays finished 1-for-2 on the man-advantage while Orlando was held scoreless at 0-for-5. Goaltender Mike Condon got the start for Orlando and stopped 25 shots in a losing effort.

Rays Break Out With 4 Goals In 3rd, Drop Solar BearsFour straight third period goals, including three in a span of 1:18, gave the Stingrays a 4-0 victory over the Orlando Solar Bears on Thursday night at the Amway Center.
