From the Dean’ Office

We are continuing the journey to fulfill our

vision “to be known as a premier business program in the Southeast that provides a diverse environment for students to enhance their potential to become future business leaders.” In keeping with this vision, our primary focus during the 2016-17 academic year is on leadership development.

This newsletter highlights some of our accomplishments over the past year to include: The Innovation and Entrepreneurship HUB; approval of a certificate program in Ag Innovation and Entrepreneurship and a minor in Innovation and Entrepreneurship; Belcher Café – a student operated business; faculty and student international travel; faculty research grants of more than $3.3 million; expansion of

the MBA program to the Lowcountry Graduate Center in Charleston with a concentration in Healthcare Management, and student participation in the National Black MBA Association Minority Business Undergraduate Case Competition. In addition, our Executive Speaker Series and the Executive-in-Residence program continue to engage students in leadership development.

South Carolina State University’s School of Business was initially accredited by AACSB – International in 2001 and is one of 11 schools in South Carolina and the only Historically Black University in the state to attain this prestigious accreditation. Programs accredited include five undergraduate programs: accounting, agribusiness, business economics, management and marketing and an MBA program with tracks in a general MBA, entrepreneurship, agribusiness, and healthcare management.

I would like to thank alumni and friends who have supported us with funds and services and ask you to continue your support of the INSPIRE Campaign.

Barbara L. Adams, Ph.D., CPA

Interim Dean

Innovation and Entrepreneurship HUB

South Carolina State University students have a new resource to inspire them to become entrepreneurs. The Innovation and Entrepreneurship HUB was launched in the School of Business at an opening event in September to provide students and the community with resources to ignite and nurture their entrepreneurial spirit. The primary goal of the HUB is to support student entrepreneurship and create career and educational opportunities, with particular emphasis in the food and fiber sector. The HUB provides a physical and supportive administrative infrastructure. It offers workstations/incubator settings with computer, phone and copying access; meeting space for brainstorming and collaborating on entrepreneurial projects; software for developing business plans, websites and marketing materials; provides mentorships and training through seminars on various issues related to business startups; and professional consultants to assist with market research, legal, financing and other issues in developing a new or refining an existing product, service or technology, among other services. Although the primary emphasis is on developments in the food and fiber sector, the HUB is supportive of and encourages all academic majors across campus to utilize services in developing their entrepreneurial projects.

The HUB is also conducting research on technologies that will advance the food and fiber sector in the agribusiness industry. The results will be shared with students working on agribusiness related projects and will be incorporated into the curriculum for the Certificate in Ag Innovation and Entrepreneurship. The Certificate Program consists of 18 credit hours and can be completed in 9 months or less. Both undergraduate and non-traditional students with 2 years of college or 2 years of work

experience are eligible to enroll in the program. The curriculum focuses on unleashing creativity, innovation, new product development, and enterprise development. Thus, this certification is an added credential that will be beneficial to those who wish to stand out as a leader by launching a new startup or as a leader in corporate America.

In the spring, the HUB will sponsor three competitions: an “Innovative Idea Challenge” for participants in the early stages of developing a business idea; a “Bulldog Tank” (Shark Tank style), sponsored by S & F Investment, Inc. for those who have a fully developed plan; and a “STEAM Challenge” for interdisciplinary teams with projects that show how Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics, along with the humanities and social sciences, might work together. All competitions will provide some funding and incubator space for winning projects.

It is hoped that one day the HUB will become the center of the campus where new ideas flourish and develop into projects that will have a significant impact on the University, the Orangeburg community and the state of South Carolina.

The Innovation and Entrepreneurship HUB is funded through a USDA- National Institute of Food and Agriculture Grant.

Students Learn Leadership and Business Skills in Operating a Campus Business

Business students at South Carolina State University are putting into practice what they are being taught in the classroom by operating a campus business. Students took over the operation of Belcher Café, which was formerly operated by Sodexho, at the start of the school year in August. Sodexho provides food services for the University, but discontinued operating the café in 2015. Although the University’s contract with Sodexho does not allow competing entities on campus, they agreed to allow the School of Business to take control of the café, which is located in Belcher Hall. Students are applying their leadership, management, marketing and accounting skills in performing tasks such as purchasing merchandise and stocking inventory, operating the cash register, depositing daily cash receipts, providing good customer service, maintaining accounting records, hiring and firing employees. Currently, the café only sell packaged items to include, assorted K-cup coffees, Starbucks frappes, juice, water, energy drinks, muffins, pastries, crackers, fruit cups, assorted candies and cookies, boxed cereal, grits, oatmeal, and packaged salads and sandwiches. The Café is operating under the umbrella of Young Enterprising Students (YES), a non-profit entity established as a vehicle to promote entrepreneurship and the free enterprise system though student-run businesses on campus. It is expected that several other student-owned businesses on campus will develop. All funds generated by the businesses will be used to educate and train students at SC State.

This will include participation in student conferences and competitions, workshops, roundtable discussions, summer camps, and scholarships.
