FOR STARTERS College baseball’s premier rivalry is this weekend as South Carolina (6-1) meets Clemson (5-2) for three games in three different sites. The series opens on Friday at Clemson with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Game two of the series shifts to Greenville and the Reedy River Rivalry contest at Fluor Field with first pitch at 2:15 p.m. The series concludes in Columbia on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Carolina Stadium. Carolina has had success against Clemson in recent years with a 15-6 record vs. the Tigers in the last five seasons. South Carolina won four of five games last year in the series with four of the five contests also decided by just one run. Carolina won two of three in March as well as a pair of games in the NCAA Regional. All three games can also be heard on the Gamecock Radio Network from IMG College including flagship sta-tion 107.5 FM “The Game.” Derek Scott and Tommy Moody will have the call for Friday and Saturday with Andy Demetra and Moody calling the Sunday contest. Friday’s game will be streamed live at clemsontigers.com. Saturday’s game at Fluor Field in Greenville will be televised on six TV networks in the states of South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia as well as ESPN3. TV affiliates televising the game are as follows: WMYA-TV (MyNet) Greenville/Spartanburg/Asheville, WTAT-TV (Fox) Charleston, WFXB-TV (Fox) Myrtle Beach/Florence, WJCL-TV (Fox) Savannah & (MeTV) Augusta, MeTV WOLO.4 (MeTV) Columbia. For Columbia residents, Me-TV is available over the air on Channel 25.4 and Time Warner Cable channel 106. It is not available on U-Verse, DIRECTV or DISH Network. Sunday’s game will be streamed live at GamecocksOnline.com on the All Access Channel.

THE OPPONENT Clemson enters with a 5-2 record with all seven games played at home this season. The Tigers return four position starters from last year including junior second baseman Steve Wilkerson. He currently leads Clemson in hitting with a .429 average (12-for-28) with five runs scored, a homer and seven RBI. Freshman outfielder Steven Duggar has a .320 average (8-for-25) with seven runs scored as well as three doubles. Junior third baseman Shane Kennedy leads the Tigers with nine RBI and a homer as well. On the mound, Clemson starts the weekend with sophomore right-hander Daniel Gossett, who has a 1-0 record with a 0.77 ERA in 11.2 innings with three walks and 12 strikeouts. Senior right-hander Scott Firth has two starts as well and is 2-0 with a 0.60 ERA in 15.0 innings with three walks and nine strikeouts. Junior right-hander Matt Campbell has been one of their arms out of the bullpen. He is 0-1 with two saves in three appearances with three strikeouts in 2.1 innings.

GAMECOCKS IN THE RANKINGS South Carolina is ranked for the third straight week. The Gamecocks are No. 7 by Baseball America and Col-legiate Baseball and No. 8 in the USA Today coaches’ poll.

A LOOK BACK Freshman left-hander Jack Wynkoop hurled 5.1 scoreless innings in his first career start and seventh ranked South Carolina scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a scoreless tie as the Gamecocks defeated Furman 5-2 on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference baseball action at Carolina Stadium. Scoreless entering the bottom of the fifth, the Gamecocks made their move. Max Schrock doubled with one out, Graham Saiko walked and LB Dantzler singled to load the bases. Erik Payne would drive in Max Schrock on a RBI fielder’s choice. On the play, Saiko’s grounder was fielded cleanly by Furman third baseman Chris Ohmstede. He would get one out by tagging third base but a throwing error trying to nab Payne at first for the double play allowed both Schrock and Dantzler to score and give the Gamecocks a two-run lead. Grayson Greiner followed and made it 3-0 on a RBI single.

www.GamecocksOnline.com4LAST WEEK’S RECAP

South Carolina continued the 2013 season with a weekend sweep of Albany at Carolina Stadium. The Game-cocks defeated Albany 8-3 in the opener followed by victories of 14-1 and 6-4 on Sunday in a doubleheader. South Carolina is now 5-1 on the year and will next be in action on Tuesday hosting Furman at 4 p.m. The Gamecocks will meet Clemson this weekend in a three-game series with Friday’s contest at Clemson, Saturday’s game at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C. and Sunday’s series finale in Columbia.

A NO-NO Sunday’s 14-1 victory featured a combined no-hitter by Colby Holmes, Forrest Koumas and Josh Knab. It is the first no-hitter by a Gamecock team in 38 years since March 26, 1975 when Ray Lavigne hurled a no-hitter in an 8-0 win over George Mason. March 2, 2012 (Charleston, S.C.)South Carolina 3, Clemson 2 (11 innings)

Second ranked South Carolina scored twice in the top of the 11th inning courtesy of a pair of two-out RBI base hits from Sean Sullivan and Connor Bright and a diving grab by center fielder Evan Marzilli off a line drive by Clemson pinch hitter Jay Baum with two outs and the tying run on third base sealed a 3-2 Gamecock victory over the 15th ranked Tigers on Friday night at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park in Charleston, S.C. It was an electric crowd of 5,851 fans in Charles-ton, S.C. with half in Garnet and Black for the Game-cocks and half in Orange and Purple for the Tigers. The rivalry went back and forth the entire evening as both teams traded zeroes for much of the thriller as South Carolina senior left-hander Michael Roth and Clemson junior right-hander Kevin Brady dueled each other on the mound. Both would end up leaving the game al-lowing a run apiece. With the score tied at 1-1 in the top of the 11th inning, the Gamecocks made their move as Christian Walker opened the frame drawing a walk on four pitches. After a sacrifice bunt moved Walker over, the Gamecocks put runners on the corners against Clemson reliever Daniel Gossett as Kyle Martin singled to left field. After pinch runner Patrick Harrington en-tered the game, Gossett struck out Joey Pankake for the second out of the inning. That set the stage for Sean Sullivan, who broke through and gave the Gamecocks the lead with a base hit to left field on a 0-1 pitch from Gossett. Connor Bright added to the output for the Gamecocks with his own RBI base hit, this one to right field scoring Harrington. It was a close play at the plate that saw a collision with Harrington and Clemson catcher Spencer Kieboom. Despite South Carolina’s 3-1 lead, the Tigers looked to answer in the bottom half as Richie Shaffer led off with a double off of Carolina reliever Forrest Koumas. With one out and Shaffer still on second base, the Tigers would inch closer as a fielding error by Pan-kake at shortstop allowed Shaffer to score cutting South Carolina’s lead to 3-2. With one out and a runner on first, right-hander Ethan Carter got the second out of the inning with a strikeout against Dominic Attanasio. The Tigers still had a chance though as they put run-ners on the corners with two outs on a throwing error by third baseman LB Dantzler. South Carolina went to the pen one more time with left-hander Nolan Belcher and Clemson countered with pinch hitter Jay Baum, a right-handed bat. With the count at 2-2, Baum laced a line drive to center field. With the wind blowing in, Marzilli ran on a line and dove and just got his glove underneath the ball to make the catch and preserve the Gamecock victory. Koumas earned the win in relief and is now 1-0 on the year. He worked 2.2 innings and allowed one run, unearned, on two hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Belcher picked up his first save of the year. Gossett took the loss for Clemson and is now 0-1 for the season. He allowed two runs on three hits in 1.2 innings with three strikeouts and one walk. There wasn’t much offense early with the pitching match-up between Roth and Brady as good as adver-tised. South Carolina broke ahead 1-0 in the top of the third inning. Adam Matthews reached base with an in-

field single and after a sacrifice bunt by Tanner English with one out, he would score on Christian Walker’s RBI single up the middle. Roth was pretty close to flawless through six in-nings allowing just two hits. He was also the benefi-ciary of a great throw by Marzilli in the fifth inning that nabbed Attanasio at the plate to keep Carolina ahead by a run. Clemson, however, would get to Roth in the sev-enth inning to tie the game at 1-1. Richie Shaffer battled back from down 0-2 in the count to earn a leadoff walk for the Tigers. After a sacrifice bunt by Kieboom ad-vanced him into scoring position, he would score on Jason Stolz’s RBI base hit up the middle. Roth went 7.1 innings and allowed one run on four hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. Brady’s line was one run on four hits in six innings with seven strikeouts and two walks also. Carolina had eight hits to six hits for Clemson. Pankake went 2-for-5 to lead the Gamecocks. Shaffer would lead the Tigers with a 2-for-2 day at the plate and two runs scored. Steve Wilkerson had two hits as well.

March 3, 2012 (Columbia, S.C.)South Carolina 9, Clemson 6

Second ranked South Carolina pounded out 11 hits with a three-run homer from Adam Matthews as well as a solo homer from LB Dantzler, on the way to a 9-6 victory over 15th ranked Clemson on Saturday afternoon in front of a sold out crowd of 8,242 fans at Carolina Stadium. Freshman right-hander Evan Beal earned the win in relief and is now 1-0 on the year. He retired nine in a row when he entered the game in the bottom of the 5th and finished allowing two runs on three hits with five strikeouts and a walk in four innings of work. Clemson junior right-hander Dominic Leone suffered the loss and is now 2-1 for the season. Leone went 2.1 innings and allowed six runs on four hits with three walks, two hit batters and a pair of strikeouts. Clemson struck first with two runs in the top of the second inning. Phil Pohl led off with a walk and Brad Felder doubled down the right field line to put runners on second and third base. South Carolina starter Matt Price battled and got the next two outs with a strikeout against Garrett Boulware and a pop up to Dominic At-tanasio. Jason Stolz however responded for the Tigers with a two-out RBI single up the middle to give the Ti-gers a 2-0 lead. The Gamecocks had their own answer in the bot-tom half of the second against Leone with three runs to go ahead 3-2. Dantzler got things started with a solo home run to right field to lead off the frame, his team-leading third homer of the year. That was followed by a base hit from Kyle Martin and a walk to Joey Pankake. After Matthews’ sacrifice bunt advanced the runners, Dante Rosenberg drove in Martin with a RBI ground out to the second baseman. With Pankake on third base and two outs, South Carolina took advantage of Leone being around the zone as Chase Vergason was hit by a pitch and Evan Marzilli walked to load the bases. Pankake would then score as Leone hit Tanner English giving the Gamecocks a one-run lead. That lead extended to 6-2 in the third inning on

the back of Matthews’ three-run homer. A one-out walk to Martin followed by an infield single from Pankake set the stage for Matthews. On Leone’s 1-0 pitch, Mat-thews drilled a fastball to deep center field that cleared the wall to increase Carolina’s lead to four runs. It was Matthews’ first homer of the season and ended the af-ternoon for Leone. Clemson cut Carolina’s lead to 6-4 in the top of the fifth inning. With one out and Steve Wilkerson on first base, Richie Shaffer roped a double down the left field line that scored Wilkerson. Shaffer would eventu-ally be driven in by Phil Pohl cutting the Gamecock deficit in half. Price left after 4.1 innings allowing four runs on five hits with six strikeouts and two walks in a no-decision. South Carolina answered again in the bottom half with an unearned run off of Clemson reliever Jonathan Meyer to increase the lead back to three runs. Matthews reached base with one out on an infield single and ad-vanced to third on Dante Rosenberg’s single down the right field line. With two outs, Evan Marzilli hit a chop-per up the middle that Clemson second baseman Steve Wilkerson could not handle allowing Matthews to score and increasing the Carolina lead to 7-4. The Gamecock lead stretched to 9-4 in the eighth inning. Tanner English led off with a bunt for a base hit and after a stolen base scored on Christian Walker’s RBI double down the left field line. Walker eventually would score on Pankake’s fielder’s choice RBI. Clemson responded in the ninth inning as Richie Shaffer knocked a two-run homer with two outs to left field off of Beal cutting the Carolina lead to three runs. After a base hit by Phil Pohl, the Gamecocks went to the pen one more time with left-hander Nolan Belcher, who retired Brad Felder on a ground out clinching the Carolina victory. Seven of nine Gamecock starters had at least one hit. Matthews, Dantzler and Martin had two hits apiece. Martin, Pankake and Matthews all scored two runs as well. Shaffer led Clemson with a 2-for-5 day at the plate with three RBI.

March 4, 2012 (Clemson, S.C.)Clemson 6, South Carolina 5

Second ranked South Carolina built up a 5-3 lead but 15th ranked Clemson rallied in the final two innings on the back of a two-run homer from Phil Pohl and a RBI single in the bottom of the ninth by Steve Wilkerson to defeat the Gamecocks 6-5 on Sunday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Grayson Greiner had a pair of home runs as well as four RBI and Adam Matthews was 2-for-4 with a RBI as well as Carolina took a two-run advantage into the top of the eighth inning. The Gamecocks were looking for more as Matthews singled with one out and advanced on a failed pickoff by Clemson reliever Scott Firth. After Greiner walked on four pitches to give Carolina runners on the corners, Chase Vergason roped a hard grounder that was stabbed by Clemson’s Jon McGibbon at first base, and he proceeded to start a 3-6-3 double play that ended the Gamecock threat. The Tigers then made their move in the bottom of the eighth with a leadoff walk to Richie Shaffer. That set the stage for Pohl, who knocked a 1-0 pitch from Gamecock reliever Forrest

Koumas over the left-centerfield wall to tie the game at 5-5. Carolina put a couple of runners on base in the top of the ninth on Evan Marzilli’s leadoff single and an er-ror by Clemson second baseman Steve Wilkerson. Firth escaped further damage though with a strikeout against LB Dantzler and a ground out by Kyle Martin. McGib-bon opened the ninth with a base hit up the middle and after a sacrifice bunt moved him into scoring position, he scored on Steve Wilkerson’s RBI base hit into left-center giving the Tigers a 6-5 victory. Koumas suffered the loss and is now 1-1 on the year. He allowed three runs on three hits with one strike-out and one walk in 1.1 innings. Firth earned the victory and is 1-0 for the season. He allowed one run on three hits in four innings with four strikeouts and two walks. South Carolina capitalized on a pair of Tiger er-rors to take a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning. LB Dantzler led off with a fly ball to left field that was dropped by Garret Boulware putting Dantzler on sec-ond base. With one out, he would advance to third on a throwing error by Richie Shaffer that allowed Joey Pan-kake to reach base and into scoring position. Matthews would drive in the first run of the game with a RBI single to left field over the head of Shaffer. That was followed by a three-run homer from Greiner, his first career round tripper in a Gamecock uniform. Greiner attacked the first pitch he saw from Pohle giving the Gamecocks a four-run lead. Clemson would get an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning. Joe Costigan walked with one out, Jason Stolz singled and Jon McGibbon reached base on a muffed throw by Holmes over at first base. Thomas Brittle drove in Costigan with a sacrifice fly to left field cutting Carolina’s lead to 4-1. Clemson would get within a run in the third in-ning. Shaffer opened the frame with a solo home run to left field, his fourth homer of the season. Costigan added a RBI single as well. The Tigers would load the bases for the second time against Holmes but he would escape further damage with a line out against Brittle to keep the Gamecocks ahead 4-3. South Carolina extended the lead to 5-3 in the sixth inning on Greiner’s second homer of the day. On Firth’s 2-0 pitch, Greiner roped his second blast of the day to left-center. Both team’s offense worked each starting pitcher early in the game. Holmes went 3.2 innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits with four strike-outs and three walks. Kevin Pohle went five innings and allowed four runs, all unearned, on six hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Carolina left-hander Tyler Webb and right-hander Ethan Carter both were solid out of the bullpen in the middle innings. Webb hurled two scoreless with just one hit allowed while Carter went 1.1 scoreless with one hit allowed as well. South Carolina senior outfielder Adam Matthews earned the Tom Price Award as MVP of the series for South Carolina. Matthews hit .417 (5-for-12) in the three games vs. the Tigers with four runs and four RBI. Richie Shaffer earned the Bob Bradley Award as MVP of the series for Clemson. Matthews, Greiner and Vergason each had two hits apiece to lead the Gamecocks at the plate. McGib-bon went 3-for-5 to lead the Tigers at the plate. Pohl,

Shaffer, Stolz and Wilkerson had two hits apiece as well for Clemson.

June 2, 2012South Carolina 5, Clemson 4 (12 inn.)

Junior LB Dantzler blasted a walk-off single off the right-field wall in the bottom of the 12th inning, scoring freshman Joey Pankake to lift South Carolina to a thrilling 5-4 victory over rival Clemson on Saturday in the 2012 NCAA Columbia Regional at Carolina Sta-dium. Pankake came through with a leadoff single to be-gin the 12th. Junior Evan Marzilli then moved Pankake to third with a single to left center, setting the stage for Dantzler. After Christian Walker popped up to right field, Dantzler smashed a 2-2 offering from Kevin Brady to right to drive in Pankake for the victory in front of a sellout crowd of 8,242. Carolina tallied 12 hits on the evening, includ-ing a 3-for-6 night from Marzilli. Dantzler, Pankake and Adam Matthews contributed two hits apiece. Matthews had two RBIs after delivering his fifth home run of the season. Clemson collected eight hits in the loss. Brad Felder led the way with three base knocks, including a solo home run. South Carolina reliever Evan Beal (4-4) worked a perfect 1 1/3 innings to earn the win, striking out two batters. Brady (1-3) picked up the loss after working three innings and giving up one run and five hits. He also had three strikeouts. In a game that feature big plays in almost every inning, one of the biggest came early on for the Game-cocks. Carolina starting pitcher Michael Roth got in a jam in the top of the second inning as he gave up a single and walked two batters to load the bases with no outs. However, the Gamecocks turned a huge double play that involved interference being called on the base runner going to second, forcing runners to go back to second and third base and taking a run off the board. Roth was then able to get Spencer Kieboom to fly out to center field to end the threat. After getting the Gamecock offense going in Fri-day’s win, Matthews was back at it on Saturday as he delivered a two-out two-run home run to left field in the fourth to give South Carolina a 2-0 lead. The Tigers found their offense in the seventh with a three-run rally to take the lead. With one out and run-ners on first and second, Steve Wilkerson lined a dou-ble down the left-field line to drive in one run. Thomas Brittle followed with a RBI single, and Pohl reached on a fielder’s choice with the bases loaded to plate another run and give Clemson a 3-2 advantage. Clemson pushed its lead to 4-2 in the eighth when Felder sent a solo homer over the right-field wall. The Gamecocks pulled to within a run in the home half of the eighth. Marzilli ripped a single to right field to lead things off. Walker then doubled down the left-field line, scoring Marzilli from first to make it a 4-3 ballgame. Carolina rallied in the ninth to tie the game. Kyle Martin delivered a pinch-hit single to lead off the frame. After Chase Vergason drew a walk and Dante Rosen-

berg laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third, Pankake lined a single to center field, scoring pinch runner TJ Costen to tie the game. Ver-gason was waved home on the play, but he was thrown out at the plate to keep the contest knotted at 4-4, as the teams went to extra innings where Dantzler delivered the game-winning single.

June 3, 2012South Carolina 4, Clemson 3

The Gamecocks jumped on rival Clemson early en route to claiming the Columbia Regional title with a 4-3 victory at Carolina Stadium in front of a sellout crowd of 8,242. One of the keys to Carolina’s win was the stel-lar regional debut of freshman starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery. The Sumter, S.C., native worked 6 2/3 in-nings, giving up two runs and five hits and fanning six batters to improve his record to 5-1. He kept Clemson’s bats under control for most of the day as he retired 12 straight batters at one point during the game. Junior Ty-ler Webb closed things out for the Gamecocks to pick up his third save of the season, allowing one run and two hits and striking out four in 2 1/3 innings on the mound. Clemson starter David Haselden (4-2) was tagged with the loss after surrendering three runs and three hits in 2/3 of an inning. Carolina tallied 10 hits on the afternoon, as LB Dantzler, Tanner English and Chase Vergason led the charge with two hits each. The multi-hit game is Eng-lish’s team-leading 21st of the season. Freshman Joey Pankake added his third triple of the year, and freshman Connor Bright contributed a double, which is the first extra base hit of his career. Seven Tigers recorded one hit apiece with Thom-as Brittle and Spencer McGibbon each tallying a double to lead the way. The Gamecocks came out swinging early and put together a three-run outburst in the top of the first in-ning. Pankake ignited the offense as he narrowly missed hitting a leadoff home run off the center-field wall and turned it into a triple. Evan Marzilli followed with a sac-rifice fly to left field, and Pankake slid under the tag at home to score Carolina’s first run. Marzilli’s sac fly was his eighth of the season, which moves him into a tie with Jim Curl (1981) and Jim Pankovits (1974) for first all-time in a single season at Carolina. Christian Walker then drew a walk and later scored on a single to left by regional MVP Adam Matthews, and Bright made it a 3-0 game with a run-scoring double off the wall in left. Carolina pushed its lead to 4-0 in the sixth. Eng-lish doubled, advanced to third on a Clemson throwing error by the left fielder and then scored on a single by Vergason to give the Gamecocks a four-run cushion. Clemson cut Carolina’s lead in half in the bottom of the sixth, as Brittle delivered a RBI double and scored two batters later on a groundout by Phil Pohl. The Tigers made things interesting in the ninth by pulling to within 4-3 on a two-out RBI single by Spen-cer Kieboom, but Webb was able to get Brad Felder to fly out to right to end the game and send the Gamecocks to the Super Regional.

Chad Holbrook was named head baseball coach for the University of South Carolina on July 16, 2012. Holbrook was promoted to the top spot by athletics director Ray Tanner after serving four seasons as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator for the Gamecocks. “Coach Holbrook is a man of tremendous character and experience,” said Tanner. “He will successfully lead our Gamecocks for years to come. This job as South Carolina’s head baseball coach could have attracted many across the country, but the best man for this job was already here. Coach Holbrook’s a great recruiter and evaluator of talent. He will be a great ambassador for the University of South Carolina.” Holbrook came to South Carolina in July 2008 as associate head coach. Along with his recruiting coordinator duties, he served as hitting instructor, overseeing the Gamecock offense, including base running and the short game and was the third base coach. He also worked with the outfielders. Holbrook came to the Gamecock program after serving 15 seasons as a member of the University of North Carolina coaching staff. Holbrook was recently honored as the 2011 ABCA/Baseball America Assistant Coach of the Year. A tremendous evaluator of talent, Holbrook recently was named the No. 10 best recruiter in all of college sports by ESPNU & ESPN The Magazine in the publication’s 2011 January edition. The list was put together in conjunction with three-dozen experts who were asked the question: Who are the top 20 recruiters in college sports? Holbrook was the only baseball coach on the list. Holbrook’s offensive prowess has made an immediate impact on the South Carolina baseball program in his first four seasons. His guidance was instrumental in helping the Gamecocks to back-to-back national championships in 2010 and 2011 at the College World Series as well as a national runner-up finish in 2012. Holbrook helped in the development of two-time All-America Christian Walker, who led the Gamecocks in all three Triple Crown categories the last two years. He finished 2012 hitting .321 (77-for-240) with 11 homers and 55 RBI as well as a .450 on-base percentage and a .525 slugging percentage. Walker was a fourth round selection by the Baltimore Orioles in the 2012 MLB Draft. Walker was named to the CWS All-Tournament team for a third time. He tied a CWS record for hits also in a career as he notched 28 that put him alongside Dustin Ackley of North Carolina (2007-09), ironically also a player that Holbrook recruited and coached in Chapel Hill. Holbrook helped bridge together a new crop of Gamecocks in the 2012 season as he molded newcomers Tanner English, Grayson Greiner and Joey Pankake into SEC All-Freshman honorees. All three would factor into Carolina’s successful season. The group of newcomers was also rated the top recruiting class in the country in 2011 by Collegiate Baseball and No. 6 in the nation by Baseball America. Holbrook played a key role in 2011 MLB supplemental draft selection Jackie Bradley Jr.’s Gamecock career. In 2010 Bradley was a 2010 All-SEC selection and College World Series Most Outstanding Player. That season, Holbrook helped to oversee an offense that peaked in the

postseason with a .309 batting average in 12 postseason contests. Evan Marzilli was the team’s top postseason hitter with a .419 average (18-for-43) with Walker right behind him at .389 (21-for-54) and Bradley hitting .348 with four HR and 17 RBI. Carolina finished the season with a .300 team batting average as well as a .392 on-base percentage. The squad’s 734 hits were second highest in the conference with the team also tallying 298 walks, 14th highest in the country. In 2009, Holbrook’s first season, the Gamecocks finished with a team batting average of .310 on the year, the highest average in the last nine seasons, along with an improved on-base percentage of .394 and a .528 slugging percentage. Carolina was fifth in the nation with 109 home runs. Among the players he tutored that first year were Freshman All-America Jackie Bradley Jr. and 2009 All-SEC selections, Justin Dalles, Nick Ebert, Bobby Haney and DeAngelo Mack. Prior to joining the Gamecock program, Holbrook worked for 15 seasons on the North Carolina coaching staff. While at UNC, the Tar Heels made 11 NCAA Tournament appearances including four NCAA Super Regionals and three trips to the College World Series. The 2007 squad captured an ACC championship, the first at UNC since 1990 when Holbrook was a freshman. At UNC, Holbrook mentored several top players including 2008 second-team All-America outfielder Tim Fedroff, third-team All-America first baseman Dustin Ackley and third-team All-America second baseman Kyle Seager. Ackley also earned third-team All-America honors in 2007 and was both Baseball America & Collegiate Baseball’s Freshman of the Year. Ackley was drafted No. 2 overall in the 2009 MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners. In addition, Holbrook was instrumental in recruiting current Major League Baseball players Daniel Bard, Matt Harvey, Chris Iannetta, Andrew Miller, Seager and Ackley to UNC. As recruiting coordinator for the North Carolina program, Holbrook put together consecutive top 10 recruiting classes that helped the Tar Heels in making three consecutive College World Series appearances. From 2006-2008, North Carolina led the nation in wins with 54 in 2006, 57 in 2007 and 54 in 2008. PG Cross Checker ranked his last UNC recruiting class No. 3 in the nation. Holbrook’s 2007 class ranked fourth in the nation by Baseball America with his 2006 class selected eighth in the country. Baseball America also ranked his 2004 class 11th in the nation with the publication naming the Tar Heels recruiting class of 2003 as the No. 1 group in the country. That 2003 class tied for first in Collegiate Baseball’s recruiting rankings with South Carolina. Under Holbrook’s eye, UNC batted .324 as a team in the 2008 season and posted six of the top seven hitting seasons in Tar Heel history. The Tar Heels led the nation in hits in 2007 as well with 820 to finish the year. The school record for batting average in Chapel Hill was also set under Holbrook’s direction in 2002 when the Tar Heels finished with a .325 mark. Holbrook served as undergraduate assistant coach in 1994 and was promoted to full-time assistant in the fall of 1994.
