WORLDWIDE BIRTHS, DEATHS & MARRIAGES International Genealogical Index (IGI) [Births, Baptisms & Marriages]

The IGI is an index, principally of births, baptisms and marriages, compiled by the Genealogical Society of Utah (GSU). Source documents have largely been civil registrations and church registers though many entries come from other sources including submission from members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Deaths are not included in the index while a small number of entries have been extracted from other sources e.g. census records. The 1992 microfiche edition of the IGI totals approximately 187 million entries. The IGI is also available in the Society on CD-ROM and can also be accessed through the Internet at www.familysearch.com. Both these versions are more recent than the microfiche version. Events included generally range in time from the earliest church registers (1500's) to 1875. There are some entries which are more recent than 1875, but they form a very small percentage of the total. The Southwest Pacific section IGI includes a relatively small section for Australia. ONE NAME STUDIES David Love Collection Research of the late David Love into families with connections with the surname LOVE, extracted from many sources and sorted into family groups. The collection includes details of over 50,000 persons. GAZETTEERS Gazetteer of the World 1857 A Gazetteer of the World or Dictionary of Geographical Knowledge, compiled from the most recent authorities, and forming a complete Body of Modern Geography, physical, political, statistical, historical and ethnographical. 1857 RESEARCH DIRECTORIES AND GUIDES Family History Library - Locality Catalogue A catalogue of research material held by the GSU in Salt Lake City. Items indicated as being on microfilm are generally available through the family history libraries of the Mormon Church. The Locality Catalogue is indexed by country, then by subject matter. Family Registry A research directory compiled by the GSU. While content predominantly relates to research by Americans, anyone may submit entries to the GSU for inclusion. Details of the ancestor being researched, and name and address of the researcher are given.

It also indicates those who were killed in action (KIA), died of wounds (DOW), or were discharged abroad or returned to Australia (RTA). The year of the event may be determined from the volume number - a chart for this is kept at the Microform desk. In the period 1916-1930 a date of death is given for some events (particularly where there are several deaths of the same name in the period). From 1930 dates and the registration district are given for deaths and marriages. District Registrar's Records Indexes and Certificate Books from the District Registrars of BD&M. Until the closure of the District Registry Offices in 1991 a copy of each certificate was kept in the district where the event was registered. Many of these certificates have been made available for research in public libraries and other repositories around the state. Cut off dates for access are Births 1922, Marriages 1937 and Deaths 1967 although there are variations between districts depending upon the years covered by individual books. The boundaries (and number) of the registration districts changed a number of times during the period covered and events were sometimes registered in a district other than that in which the event occurred, consequently it may be necessary to look for an event in more than one district. On occasions a copy of the certificate failed to reach the Principal Registrar in Adelaide and the District Registrar's copy will be the only one in existence. The Society has been permitted to microfilm the certificates and related indexes. COPIES ARE NOT PERMITTED TO BE MADE FROM THESE RECORDS. If a certificate can not be found in the records of the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages but exists in the District Records, the Registrar will arrange for a photocopy to be made following payment of the usual fee for copies of certificates. The indexes are semi-alphabetical and usually only give a book and certificate number.

BURIAL & CEMETERY RECORDS Burial Registers Most of the Society’s cemetery records (monumental inscriptions and burial registers) are typed transcriptions located in the Cemetery Card Index and the typed Cemetery Lists. Some have also been microfilmed. In addition microform copies of original burial registers have been made as well as being transcribed for the Cemetery Index. Some burial registers are only held on microform. * microform copies of monumental inscription and/or burial register transcriptions. ** microform copy of burial register transcription see also under Church Records for details of church burial registers. Adelaide Adelaide - West Terrace BR 1840-1992, Cremations Index 1903-1959 The Burial Register has two sections - Catholic and General. The Catholic section is alphabetical with two sets of records, both of which should be checked. The information is not very detailed. The General section has a chronological register 1840-1992 and an alphabetical register 1940-1978, lease and unleased burial indexes (chronological by year and semi-alphabetical) and cremations 1903-1951 (alphabetical). An alphabetical index to the General Section burials to 1940 has been compiled and is on microfiche. The more detailed records will give the names of each person in the family together with an age range (<7, 7 -<14, 14 -<21, 21-<35, 35 - <49, 49 & over) and an address (street name only). All other records only name the head of the household with the only details of others being statistical - by sex and age bracket. The address information for the Adelaide city area is a street name, but elsewhere is only the district name, which may cover a large area. A printed index is located in the shipping section. 1981 Census of Population & Housing Maps for each division

CHURCH RECORDS Church Records The Society has a large collection of church records covering the Church of England, Roman Catholic and a number of non conformist denominations. While most are microfilmed copies of the original church records some are copies of typed indexed transcripts which may not contain all the information to be found in the original. Pre Civil Registration BDM [35mm] Marriages 1836-1842. Deaths/Burials 1802-1842. The events covered have been extracted from church registers including Holy Trinity - Adelaide (Church of England). Anglican (Church of England) The following Anglican registers have been filmed. All are on microfiche with the exception of the Holy Trinity (Adelaide) registers which are on 35mm microfilm. For some of the churches the records held are an indexed transcript of the register. Indexes are only indicated where the period they cover is outside that covered by copies of registers held. NEWSPAPERS Until 1931 there were two major newspaper groups - The Register, which published The Register, the evening Journal and the weekly Observer and The Advertiser, which published The Advertiser, the evening Adelaide Express and Telegraph and the weekly Chronicle. The Express & Telegraph and Journal both ceased publication in 1923 and were replaced by The News. In 1931 papers published by The Register were amalgamated with those of The Advertiser. Birth, death and marriage notices in the Register and the Advertiser were generally also printed in The Observer and The Chronicle respectively. At intervals varying from weekly to monthly a summary of such notices was prepared as part of a supplement specially printed for despatch overseas. The following listing of the Society's holdings indicates the frequency of publication of the Adelaide based newspapers, and the place of publication for the country newspapers. The country papers were usually published weekly, sometimes more frequently. SCHOOLS Most school records held are for Primary Schools. The first Government Secondary School was started in 1879 for girls and in 1897 for boys (the Agricultural School), and the system was not extended until 1907. In 1911 97% of students in state schools were in primary schools, in 1941 85%, and by 1971 it had fallen to 68%. There were over 700 state schools by 1900, many of which were one teacher schools with less than 20 students. Periods covered by the registers vary, some being for short periods only.
