Without doubt, season 2017/18 has been a memorable one from winning National Championships, to welcoming new players and their families, through to the excitement of having new owners of the Adelaide Bite.

I want to start by acknowledging our volunteers across all Clubs, whom without this passionate group of people the doors would simply not open, the fields would not be prepared, the canteens not be serving, and the bars would not be pouring. Sometimes we focus on the bigger picture, when in fact it’s the little things that make the big picture a reality, so thank you to all the volunteers. In very much the same vain, I would like to thank our ever-devoted scorers, and umpires who are instrumental in providing the infrastructure which enables the players to bring the game to life.

This year in conjunction with the Clubs, the Board delivered its strategic plan, in what will be the driving mechanism to ensure we develop and implement a sustainable foundation for our organisation. We will continue to seek opportunities to generate external revenue streams, forge new strategic partners, and strengthen existing ones. We acknowledge and will continue to work closely with our key stake holders, government and our governing body to maximise every opportunity.

In July, Baseball SA’s Patron Terry Evans was appointed to the Board, by the Directors. He will strengthen our overall governance structure, while providing legal support through his impressive professional resume within the legal sector.

We welcomed 3 new staff members to enhance on the excellent work out going team members had delivered. I wish both Matt and Landon every success in their new endeavours. Tyrone and Chris, both bring a diverse set of skills to Baseball SA, and will continue to implement programs that will deliver success. Rowena strengthens our organisation by creating programs that reach into our targeted areas. Laura and Bianca continually bring value to our organisation through diversity in the roles.

Our financial statement shows an operating deficit of $28,477 compared to a surplus of $56,144 in 2016/17, the numbers will continue to vary due to the timings and our overall cash position continues to strengthen as outlined in the audited financial statement.

I want to personally thank Mark Brougham for his exceptional contribution towards Diamond Sports. He was involved right from the start of the project, to the build and through to the commercial phase. As Mark steps down from the Diamond Sports Board, I welcome Tim Mead. He will bring his unique skills, through finance and a close relationship of both Softball and Baseball. I also want to publicly acknowledge Graham O’Connor as the outgoing Independent Chair of Diamond Sports, he has been instrumental in ensuring Diamond Sports governance, structure and continuity is of the highest level. Graham has worked tirelessly with the key stake holders in an effort to deliver a facility which works harmoniously. Both Mark and Graham leave their foot print on the Diamond Sports Board. Diamond Sports Board have appointed Deidre Fisher as the Independent Chair, she has an impressive resume within the Education Department and has particular strengths with governance and leadership. She has no association with Baseball or Softball. The BSA appointed representatives are Phil Lounder, Tim Mead and myself.

I was not only fortunate to watch the State Under 18 team compete in Blacktown but be around the team and parents and I have to say this was special group with multiple players demonstrating leadership qualities both on and off the diamond. It was easy to see that the team was the complete package and it was driven by some unique coaches. What a memorable period that is etched into the history books.

I would like to congratulate all that have been involved in driving the Women’s league, and for the Clubs for getting involved and being supportive. I would also like to congratulate all premiership winning teams, individual award winners, milestone achievements and inductees. I would like to acknowledge the Goodwood BC, division 1 premiers.

I want to acknowledge and thank the Bylaw review committee for their ongoing contribution as well as the Heritage committee for their tireless work in protecting our history.

There is no doubt as baseball evolves, we as a Board strive to offer pathways to improve, platforms to compete and strategies that strengthen, this is without doubt an exciting time. A huge thank you to my Board who work hard towards ensuring that our game is continually better on every level. Once again, a thankyou to our CEO, Nathan has delivered a season which pushes boundaries, challenges outcomes, and provides a positive culture that leads to success.

In closing, I want to thank those that continually send through their support to myself and the Board, we are all driven to ensure this game strives to provide a pathway for all to enjoy and benefit from.

Baseball in South Australia continues to push itself in the right direction.

The highlights below reinforce that the strategies and direction we are undertaking are having traction and providing the results we want:

- Our National Champion Under 18 Team- A 15% increase in total participating teams in our league- The signing of Curtis Mead to a professional contract with the Philadelphia Phillies- More of our athletes entering the US college system than ever before- Increased participation in our own Women’s Baseball League- Private ownership of our ABL franchise

Couple these with the investment into development, more attention to entry level and school attraction to our game, efforts around our heritage and history via the production of a fantastic Capps Medal summary book, ongoing facility upgrades, along with a satisfying “break-even” financially reinforcing the decisions made by our Board on the direction we are taking.

And there are some very exciting happenings on the horizon.

The Australian Baseball League is in expansion mode, with teams from Korea and New Zealand creating an eight-team completion.

The exposure internationally alone will generate new commercial opportunities along with further putting the ABL on the map as a destination league for players.

All ABL franchises will have private owners as they take over the operating licenses of the teams and breathe new life and direction into the competition.

The Bite’s new ownership structure will not only create the best playing environment in the country but offer a holistic approach to the running of a professional franchise that covers off on all aspects required to not only be successful in the short term but lay the foundation to be a fixture and cornerstone in our state for many many years to come.

Baseball SA will also introduce the Super League Baseball Adelaide mid-week competition for the purpose of bridging the gap between the healthy and vibrant Division 1 weekend competition and the ABL.

Players will be drafted to one of four teams, set up with General Managers, head coaches and assistants catering for baseball at the highest level.

Our Mission:Seek and pursue avenues to secure the future of baseball as a sport that is fun, attractive, and affordable for current and future baseball community and its members.


Our ever-expanding Women’s Baseball League will now be wholly club based. The demand and interest has been so encouraging with an expected sixteen teams to compete in two divisions in the 2018/19 season.

As exciting, is the creation of a youth division of the Women’s Baseball League that will provide the opportunity for young girls to enter a pathway designed for women.

None of these fantastic achievements happen without extensive planning, motivation and passion of a large number of people and key stakeholders.

The Government, via the Office for the Recreation and Sport, continue to be our great partners and we are indebted to them for their ongoing support.

To the Board of Baseball South Australia, I reach out with a heartfelt thank you for your drive and direction, flexibility and vision in allowing me and our great team of staff to execute the plans they have mapped out.

Baseball SA continues to have sound financial foundations on the back of its strong membership base and events. A small operating loss of $28,477 against a budgeted a breakeven budget due to some short falls in expected events income and slightly higher than expected events and administration charges.

Total income for the year was below the prior year, by $170,166, mainly due to lower events and Adelaide Bite income.

In the prior year, Baseball SA took over the operations of the Adelaide Bite, following the disbursement of the league back to Baseball Australia via the participating states, which in the 2017/208 season made a net contribution to Baseball SA’s results of $17,573. While total income was lower than the previous years, due mainly to the removal of all transactions involving Adelaide Bite, this was offset by reduced expenditure on game day operating costs.

Events income was down due to seasonal adjustments but an increase in membership income from the prior year of $17,581 made up for the short fall in other areas.

Grant income from the State Government remains steady including $40,000 for the Women’s Program, and $35,000 for High Performance and Academy. Financial support for the Women’s League is in its third year, and it is expected, in the future, that the league will be self-sustaining.

Salaries expenses were tracking slightly higher than planned with some staffing changes during the year providing the opportunity to restructure to better align with Baseball SA’s strategic priorities. With the departure of Matt Williams as Pathway Manager, adjustment of Laura Bond from part-time to full time employment to take on greater administration and financial responsibilities and the addition of Tyrone Hambly, Pathway Manager, and Rowena Trevaskis, Entry Level, TBall and Schools Coordinator, we are tracking above budgeted salary expenses for the year.

Baseball SA’s cash position improved from the prior year to $477,046, due to positive cash flow from operations, which will enable the league to fund the stabilisation of operations and provide for on-going investment in strategic areas, such as ongoing facility maintenance and capital upgrade projects, development projects, along with training and research and development of our product.

Trade debtors has reduced with greater effort being undertaken to recover outstanding balances prior to year-end, which has also provided for the increase in cash at bank at year end.

Prudently, we have provided for the non-repayment of start-up cash provided to Diamond Sports of $20,000, in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.

$50,000 was allocated as reserves during the year to be included in Baseball contribution to the CRSFP funding provided for the facility by the Office for Recreation and Sport.

Overall, 2018 has seen the consolidation of Baseball SA’s financial position, representing a sound operating model, and ongoing confidence from clubs and members.

Diamond Sports is the operating and maintenance body of the West Beach complex and proudly partners Softball and Baseball in a facility where both sports can coexist.

The board of Diamond Sports are volunteers and it does not directly employ staff. The board is made up of three appointees of Baseball, three appointees of Softball, and an Independent Chair. Its major revenue stream is from the bar and canteen with the 2016/17 audited accounts showing $160,631 generated from those sources over the year (before cost of goods). The current financial year is likely to exceed last years performance.

The bar and canteen service not only the Baseball and Softball communities, but also other events which are held at Diamond Sports such as SAPSASA and many other state and national sports events. These bring important funds into the facility which can then be used to benefit stakeholder sports.

The audited accounts to 30 June 2017 show Diamond Sports generated a profit of $34,501 in that year and had net assets of $3,911,199. These assets are predominantly the diamonds, buildings and equipment which Diamond Sports makes available to Baseball and Softball.

Over the next few months Diamond Sports will develop a facility master plan which will prioritise improvements at West Beach over the next 5 years, and will undertake a review of its board and operational structure. These will be done with input from Baseball and Softball to ensure the best outcome for the sports.

Baseball SA’s 2017-20 Strategic Plan highlighted the importance of marketing, communication and engagement in supporting the achievement of a number of the sport’s priorities. This year, the Board has continued to consider the image, reputation and marketability of the league and of the game at all levels in every aspect of its decision-making.

The development and promotion of Diamond Sports as the centre of elite performance continues to be a focus. The South Australian Government’s support has enabled us to build a facility that can and must be the heart of the game for the foreseeable future. We continue to work with Softball SA and our partners to identify new opportunities to promote the facility and its features locally, nationally and internationally. Emerging relationships with baseball communities in Asia, particularly, are being explored.

At the same time, the board is aware that our sport is changing. The sale of the Adelaide Bite franchise to a private entity can and must alter not only Baseball SA’s responsibilities, but its opportunities for marketing and promotion. As this report goes to press it has just been announced that the Adelaide Football Club has acquired the license for this state’s Australian Baseball League team. As a board and as members of South Australia’s baseball community we are excited about the on- and off-field opportunities this presents for our game. We look forward to working with the Crows to ensure Bite-related development and marketing activity and initiatives serve the game and our ambitions for growth.

The Board continues to fulfil our commitment to increased engagement with the clubs. In March, we developed and distributed the first of what is planned to be a regular online newsletter. The first edition told of results in the Capps Medal and other awards, and predicted a fascinating grand final series. More editions will keep members informed during the winter months, leading to – if feedback remains positive – regular publication from October. Baseball SA’s communications staff will welcome input from clubs to ensure the e-newsletter serves its purpose in informing the South Australian baseball community about significant milestones, achievements and events.

We continue to be heavily interested in building baseball’s fan base among those who can be involved the longest: young children. Programs to introduce and expand baseball’s reach in schools are being implemented and we thank Rowena Trevaskis for her enthusiastic efforts.

Finally, success breeds success. The more South Australian baseballers who ‘win’ on the world stage, the more the spotlight will turn to this state and the role our clubs play in developing players with world-class talent. We applaud Curtis Mead for joining Jack O’Loughlin, Jordan McArdle and Josh Tols in securing Major League Baseball contracts, as well as those pursuing athletic and professional opportunities through college pathways; each helps us spread the word about our league and its value in new markets. We wish them luck and look forward to the benefits their achievements may bring to their own futures and that of our sport.

After learning a lot about the respective groups in my first year in this role, I was looking forward to working with the Scorers, Umpires and Country Associations to help improve their respective groups.

This year we focused on a few main strategies for each group but the focus was on improvement.

Improvement in each of these areas meant different things and brought up different issues.

The main outcomes of this were a focus on;

I can certainly report that I believe that communication and relationships with the SABL office and Board are vastly improved and certainly moving in the right direction.

The growth in umpire numbers this season was great to see. Well done to Blake, Ian and all the umpiring community for what they are achieving in this area. The strategic focus on player behaviour on field and clarity around umpires roles and culture has certainly helped this growth. There are a number of things still to do but we have a great platform from which to work from.

The Scorers Association continues to play a major role in the growth of this sport here in SA. Utilising technology to provide live scoring and ensuring stats are online are just examples of how this association continues to interact with the baseball community to ensure we all get to enjoy the sport we love. Keep up the good work!

There are a number of exciting opportunities coming up with the regional communities this year – in particular the new facility being built at Port Pirie should be fantastic.

I have been excited to see the progress achieved this year and look forward to the steps forward we can make again in 2019.

In Division 2 Kensington came from 5th place to beat Glenelg in a game that showcased many young up and coming Division 1 players.

The Division 1 schedule once again stayed at a 36 game season with each club playing 3 to 4 games at West Beach either as a twilight fixture or as a Saturday fixture with their Division 2 team playing beforehand.

Baseball SA welcomed two new faces to the office throughout the season, Tyrone Hambly as Development and Pathway Manager and Chris Adamson, along with his Bite Manager role, is in charge of our elite players and academies.

Our Women’s Baseball program continues to gather momentum with most clubs entering a team in the league this season and possibly all clubs nominating a team for the coming season as well as an Under 15 Girls League coming soon. A credit to the continued hard work of Bianca Smith, Lawrie Moore and their committee.

The By-Laws Committee have been reviewing and updating over the offseason and have recommended changes to be made and implemented for season 2018/19.

Another positive for this season was our no tolerance approach towards umpire abuse in all grades and it is pleasing to see the continued improvement in this area, this should and will be a long-term approach by all clubs and players.

Once again, our young baseballers has proven that the work they and the coaches are doing at our Academies is paying off with an Under 18 gold medal at the Youth Championships and another 4th place by the Under 16s. Congratulations to Curtis Mead on signing with the Philadelphia Phillies, again showing that hard work gets rewards.

The 2017-18 season saw continued growth and success both on and off the field, with much improvement being seen across all our junior grades. I would like to once again commend the clubs for their continued efforts in growing the baseball competition in South Australia and I know firsthand the challenges faced in doing this.

Like last year, I would like to acknowledge and thank the efforts of the Baseball SA staff, particularly for the extra mile they put in, your efforts do not go unnoticed. There has been some staff changes from the previous season and I feel that the new staff have settled very well, particularly Tyrone Hambly who brings a lot of baseball knowledge and experience to our organisation. With the new position created of Schools and T-ball Coordinator, I believe that whilst this position will take a while to see results, we have the right person, in Rowena Trevaskis, to achieve the desired results and helping clubs to achieve greater participation numbers.

As we continue to grow our standards in the standings of little league, I believe that each year we are making more and bigger inroads, which is slowly becoming more and more noticeable as we are seeing the efforts of our elite coaches and Baseball SA staff paying off, with more signings of players into the MLB, as well as success in our charter and state teams. This is also complimented by the clubs focus on implementing coaches of good standard, again, not always an easy task as the time and effort of coaching is a very big commitment.

Each year we see changes to our sport, some rules being finetuned, new talent emerging, our youth players transitioning into senior players, coaches facing more challenges, particularly as the standards of our children increase, our women’s league growing in stature and each year, we as a sport are getting better and better. I encourage clubs to embrace the challenges they are faced, talk to their members, the Baseball SA board, other clubs and the broader Baseball community as sometimes the best resources are in front of us and easily accessible but not always thought about.

I would like to wish each of the clubs all the best and a successful 2018-19 season, both on and off the field. Congratulations on a successful 2017-18 season.

The 2017/18 season saw my first at Baseball South Australia as the High-Performance Manager. The season was an extremely successful one as we saw the Under 18 South Australian team win the National Championship for the first time in 30 years under the leadership of Tyrone Hambly, Tony Probert and Lachlan Eldridge. The Under 16s team narrowly finished 4th under Andrew Scott, Dave Sims and Phil Hirschausen.

We also saw several local juniors represent Australia at various events. We saw Jacob Scott, Liam Bull and Nick Rees make the Australian Under 15 team for the Yomiuri Cup in Matsuyama, Japan. Mason Clavell and Curtis Mead were selected for the Australian team at the Major League Baseball Australian Prospect Program which went to Arizona and played against professional teams including the Kansas City Royals, Seattle Mariners and Chicago Cubs. Both boys performed exceptionally well and made South Australia proud. This performance was topped off by Curtis Mead signing a professional contract with the Philadelphia Phillies which was a true testament to the hard work and dedication he has put in over the past few years. Jack O’Loughlin also represented Australia at the Under 18 World Cup held in Thunder Bay, Canada. We also had Aidan Prokopec and Riley Yeatman earn selection in the Under 15 Australian team which qualified for the World Cup later this year to be held in Panama. Tyrone Hambly was rewarded for his continued success with a spot as an assistant coach on this team. To see 8 players and coaches represent the various age groups at the highest level is a real credit to the junior development here in South Australia.

The 2017/18 season also saw 9 products of our junior development program graduate to the ABL with the Adelaide Bite. We saw Curtis Mead, Mason Clavell, Brodie Arriola, Will Kortekaas, Tyson McKee, Dylan Ridding, Sean Maple, Harry Knuckey and Griffin Weber all make their debuts. The highlight of this was having 6 of these players on the field at the same time when making the final out in a win against the Sydney Blue Sox in the final round of the ABL season.

The High-Performance department at Baseball SA continues to develop, with significant improvements made to the weight room which is open to all Adelaide Bite High Performance Academy scholarship holders, in addition to bringing the University of South Australia’s High-Performance Sports Department on to test all our athletes over the course of the next 2 months. This will be used to collect and collate data which measures improvement, as well as measuring levels of fatigue so we can adjust workloads for individuals accordingly. We will also be implementing sports psychology sessions for the duration of the academy to help aid our athletes in the mental grind that is high level sport.

It is a truly exciting time to be around the High-Performance department here, with countless athletes developing at a great rate. I look forward to seeing the continued rise to prominence of baseball in South Australia.

Season 2017/2018 is now behind us and it has been an impressive year in many ways. Looking back at;

- The Armada Senior League preparing to go to the World Series in Easley South Carolina. An experience all the players & coaches will never forget. - State teams try outs & state teams success at Nationals with SA breaking a 30-year drought, winning the Under 18s Australian Championship. - The Under 16s making top four & playing off for bronze. - Young players heading off to college in the USA and being given the opportunity to play on the Adelaide Bite roster. - The Women’s State Team finishing in the top four and playing off for a bronze medal.

Bite Elite AcademyAn elite group of players were invited out to the Elite Academy again this year with a focus on a strength & conditioning program, run by a SAIS coordinator.

Bite AcademyThe Bite Academy is growing in numbers with two age groups being offered again.

This was open to both males and females to participate and is a chance for all players to learn the game and improve their baseball skills.

The program also allows coaches to work out and work towards their Level 2 Coaching Accreditation.

National LevelThe Under 16s and Under 18s prepared for the Nationals with a pre-tournament Goodwill Series at Woodville Baseball Club and West Beach in December.

Under 16s lead by Head Coach Andrew Scott, Phil Hirschausen & David Sims worked with a younger group of players this tournament. A good result finishing fourth and giving them good grounding for the next championship.

The Under 18s coaching staff of Tyrone Hambly as Head Coach with Tony Probert & Lachy Eldridge as assistants. A brilliant effort by the coaches & players to WIN the Australian Championship, and for SA Baseball the hard work over many years is paying off.

Women’s BaseballWomen’s Baseball has grown from 6 to 13 teams this season. A great undertaking from clubs to embrace the growth of women in sport & baseball being the winner. To see the enjoyable, fun & skill development from the sadies across the season was rewarding.

The State Women’s Team competed in the Open Women’s Baseball Championships in Geelong, led by the new appointment of Simone Wearne, Risa Niakashima, Julie Wadham & Lawrie Moore.

The girls started off really well beating Queensland on day 1, which set them up to make the top 4. Played off for bronze highest result ever. A fantastic effort from the team & coaches, and big thanks to Risa.

Baseball SAThe Major League Baseball Australian Academy Program (MLBAAP) was not conducted this year. An Australia Baseball trip to Arizona was held during April 2018. This trip was an opportunity to showcase Australia’s best players to MLB clubs & college programs.

Mason Clavell & Curtis Mead were selected from SA to represent. Chris Adamson as Baseball SA High Performance Manager also travelled as coaching staff to Arizona. This experience will help Chris in forging a program to benefit our young baseball players.

Coaching AccreditationAs a result of the overlap between Landon Hernandez & Chris Adamson Coaching Accreditation is still ongoing. Courses are still being run, and still being asked for from within the organisation. A lot of work has gone into new structure for accreditation.

It has been a relatively smooth transition into my new role as Pathway Manager. I’ve been here four months now and am really enjoying the role and looking forward to implementing some of my own ideas and moving forward with developing the game in SA. My role so far has been predominately Charter related along with Schoolboys nationals, school camps and initiating the girls Under 15 showcase in the hope to create a league in the coming year.

CharterAll charter rosters and coaching staff had been filled before my arrival at West Beach, so my main focus was ensuring all teams were set and had what they needed to prepare for the State Championships. This year we were able to secure two spots to national tournaments for all grades meaning only one of our seven teams would miss out national competition. One issue we came across was several charter teams not organising their development squads. Unsure as to why this was not done, I selected development squads myself and will be emphasising moving forward that this is the responsibly of the charter coaches.

Our State Charter Championship was a success despite being rained out for the first two days of the tournament. The highlight was the dramatic elimination game between the Rays and Marlins in the little league game. A bottom of the 7th ‘walk off’ proved the difference in a historic contest between the two teams.

At the end of the Charter season I will looking at introducing a Charter Advisory Board. This board will be designed at improving our system in SA. There are many issues we need to look at in order to improve the way we run our charters and this panel will help in the forward progress of these issues.

Schoolboys NationalsAnother large event that has been a big part of my first four months in the office was the national schoolboys tournament in which for the first time a member of the SABL office has acted as the tournament director in an effort to rebuild a relationship between the SABL and School Sport. The tournament was indeed a great success both on the field and off as SA placed second to a very strong NSW team.

The tournament was, again, hindered due to weather however the tireless work from Andrew Scott as the head of grounds saw a smooth transition and minimal delays. As the Tournament Director, it gave me a chance to work closely with School Sports and do a little networking. In the near future I hope to strengthen this relationship and work together to get baseball back into schools.



School Holiday CampWe ran a School Holiday Camp during the April school holidays which saw 72 kids register and attend our 2-day camp. It was a great success. I received positive feedback from a majority of the campers and their parents. The high number of kids has not been a regular occurrence during camps in the past, my aim is to focus on ensuring this number is not just a once off and actually becomes regular when holding school camps. The high number of kids did put a little strain on our staff in terms of number of coaches, but we made do by employing some of my junior state players to help run the show.

Under 15 Girls ShowcaseIn March, I ran a girls showcase to try and generate some interest in a junior girls league. We had 21 girls register for the event however after a few late exclusions we ran the day with 15 girls and 5 senior state women as coaches. The day turned out well, all girls enjoyed themselves and they all showed some interest in furthering their baseball journeys.

Since this showcase we have been pushing for a girls league to be created and with the efforts of Bianca Smith we are finally at the stage of receiving expressions of interest to play in the league. It’s an exciting time for women’s baseball and we look forward to progressing with this.

The first few months in this role have been challenging and enlightening. I look forward to the future of the game in this state as I feel we are on the right path in developing our juniors. Moving forward in the next 12 months there are couple of key points I wish to address and improve moving forward, they include:

- Developing our charter system, creating a charter advisory board and strengthening our support systems behind the scenes. - Producing consistent (larger) numbers at all camps and academies. - Continuing to create relationships within the rural areas, I am currently communicating with several baseball communities in the country areas and setting up satellite camps and clinics in an attempt to strengthen our country areas. - General development of our junior game including increased registrations amongst junior leagues and higher involvement in schools.

I look forward to the challenges in the coming months/years that this role brings.

My aim is to provide more opportunities for 4 to 9 year old youth to play Tball or baseball in schools and at clubs, to assist clubs with recruitment of this age group through schools and ultimately increase participation levels.

This examination brought about the following projects.

Baseball in SchoolsBaseball SA has begun to market its Sporting Schools Tball Program throughout every school in South Australia. Last calendar year we provided Tball Coaching at 7 schools. In Terms 1 and 2 of this year we are already up to 5 schools. The added value we are providing is engaging coaches from clubs in the participating school’s zone to deliver the Tball Programs. This gives clubs the added benefit of physically being at the school to build relationships and recruit players. We have created a generic flyer to distribute at schools to help promote baseball and provide important information to parents who may want to pursue the sport for their child. We have also developed training modules in all aspects of the game that Tball coaches and clubs in general are encouraged to use to create sessions plans for coaching in schools or at their clubs. This project is in its infancy and although reliant upon the end user (the school to choose Tball as a sport) we are excited and extremely positive that the Sporting Schools Tball Program will only increase in size as our reputation for delivering competent programs circulates amongst the school community.

Zoning Schools to ClubsAll schools in the metropolitan area have been ‘zoned’ to a club. These lists have been distributed to clubs for feedback. The zoning is something clubs wanted so as to provide a general structure around what schools each club could potentially target to help develop relationships and ultimately offer: • afterschoolclinics • schoolTballteamcompetitions • clubCome&Trysessions • recruitmentdrives

Some collaboration and give-and-take will be required to get a mutually beneficial result which we are committed to achieving before 2018/19 preseason.

Under 9 CompetitionA framework has been developed and approved by the Board. The aim is to provide clubs with a level of baseball that league age 7 and 8 players can participate in that predominately concentrates on developing their hitting, base running, fielding and throwing skills as well as an awareness of teamwork and sportsmanship and that is cost-effective. Emphasis is placed on keeping the game moving and providing as many “touch opportunities” as possible. Season 2018/19 will see the inaugural Baseball SA endorsed Pee Wee League (U9) competition begin.

Tball CarnivalsBaseball SA aims to offer clubs at least 3 opportunities in season 2018/19 to participate in Tball carnivals, possibly in charter zones. The Tball Carnival platform has been distributed to clubs for feedback. This competition aims to provide a more structured, external and competitive opportunity for league age 5 and 6 children playing Tball within their club.

Play Tball Quick LinkI have implemented a new ‘quick link’ to the Baseball SA website named PLAY TBALL. When a user clicks on this they are provided with a vibrant, fun looking information page outlining Tball programs at different clubs. It is our aim to have every club listed on this page as it provides users with a portal into Tball in their area.

Apart from these projects I also work alongside the Pathway Manager and Operations Manager, offering entry level information and working as a team to provide optimal junior competitions, carnivals and tournaments. It has been an enjoyable, productive and exciting 6 months and I am very much looking forward to the season ahead to sight and evaluate the implementation of my projects.

The winter competition is going from strength to strength – this year the SAWBA had 53 teams playing.Weather is always a problem in winter but this year we only lost one round due to bad weather.

The Hugh Franke League grand final between the Angels and Bears resulted in the Bears winning in the bottom of the 14th innings 6 – 4.

This year we awarded Life Memberships to Trevor Dunn for over 30 years’ service as a player and treasurer of the Association, and Mal Sporne and Mrs C Miller for their work with South Baseball Winter Competition.

In our report last year, we indicated that we will release a book celebrating the first 80 years of the Capps Medal Award which will contain a detailed account of each winners performance and where possible a photo.

It was hoped to release the book at the Annual Capps Dinner this year. Despite some difficulties in tracing history from the early years I am proud to report that we achieved our goal! The first two copies were presented at the Capps Dinner to Dr. Roger Capps, the well-known and respected son of Mr. Jim Capps, the Donor of the Medal, and our President Mr. Mark Snelgrove in recognition of the support from Baseball SA.

It is our intention to present a copy of the book to each winner and in the case of the winner being deceased we will present a copy to his family. This is an arduous task as the in the passage of time the clubs and league have lost contact with some families, but we are confident that in due course we will make contact and deliver their copy of the book.

While this has been a committee project, I will go on record as saying that without the dedication of Robert Laidlaw and Phil Burgess we would never have achieved our goal. Collecting all the information is one thing but presenting it in book form, proof reading and delivering it on time is another.

A vital part of our work is to nominate suitable candidates for the various awards that are available. These include Baseball Australia Hall of Fame and/or Life Membership, Baseball SA Life Membership and Sport SA Hall of Fame. It is noticeable that there is increased activity in all categories and there is more competition for the limited awards on offer. This year we nominated candidates in each category and are awaiting the results of the voting.

We want it to be known that we are not the sole source for identifying candidates for these awards. Clubs and Affiliated Associations have a role to play in this regard and we will welcome recommendations from you. We have records from many categories of our history and we can assist with your involvement. It is a team game!

We will be extending our involvement with affiliated groups including country areas, Winter Baseball and Umpires and Scorers where we welcome your involvement in recording your history. We also welcome feedback from the district clubs and offer our assistance in preserving your history.

It is a pleasure to work with such dedicated people as those on our Heritage Committee. Considering that most of them are active in other areas of our great game it is to their credit that they give their time and energy to our Heritage Committee. My thanks and admiration to Ron Chandler, Gordon Penhall, Phil Burgess, Robert Laidlaw and Doug White.

With the implementation of new structures for umpiring over the past 18 months through the outstanding dedication from Blake Halligan to improving umpiring in SA, we are seeing more people becoming involved.

We have luckily improved our umpiring numbers both at the association level and state level, with a mixture of male and female . Some of these umpires are new people, with others switching over from playing baseball (still need more), as the number of games needing umpires increases.

Baseball umpiring is both challenging and rewarding, as I have personally found since switching over 6 years ago, with good days and some not (hopefully more good). Coaches, players and spectators might like to walk in our shoes ...

Once again we have tried to cover umpiring appointments for our country centres wherever possible for their finals series, with a huge thanks to Kym Smith for his hard work. The country centres appreciate the efforts of our travelling umpires and are also well looked after.

The ABL will be expanding next season with possibly a team out of New Zealand together with a Korean team based in Geelong (still to be confirmed). This will put more of a strain on umpire availabilty for our local competition, so if you would like to umpire, contact our Association.

Our umpiring room at West Beach continues to be used extensively, but communication problems with Softball umpires remains a issue. Hopefully these problems can be resolved.

My focus during the offseason was developing accreditation programs and recruitment of new umpires.

Firstly, with only outdated national accreditation training materials at my disposal and nothing forthcoming from Baseball Australia, significant time was invested in developing a full accreditation program for Association and State level umpires. This included creation of an Australian-first umpires Accreditation Handbook for these levels, re-writing rules exams as well as many instructor resources such as exam marking guides, assessment forms and assessment guides. This could not have been achieved without the tremendous input from Fred Halligan and Russell King.

My second focus was attracting new umpires. This is better described as encouraging those volunteers who have been officiating baseball games to seek proper training and accreditation. This has been successful with 46 people enrolling in the entry-level accreditation program over the last two years. I am proud to inform that just in the last 12 months, we have had 11 people achieve at least their entry-level certification.

I believe our return to a zero tolerance approach to abuse of officials has been a large contributor to this fantastic outcome.

This has meant that we had a greater pool of umpires to call upon to cover games this season. Even with a greater number of games we were able to cover 18% more games than we did last season and meant accredited umpires, for the first time in a few seasons, returned to presiding over the majority of games (51%). I hope to continue this trend until ultimately all games in South Australia are officiated by a competent and willing umpire. It is important to point out that many of these will remain as an umpire for their club but having an improved understanding of the rules and umpiring fundamentals will be a positive for our sport.

We now have a diverse group of umpires with a range of ages including many under the age of 18, those from varying baseball backgrounds and I am proud to state that we also now also have female accredited umpires.

With the significant reduction of abuse towards officials, I believe we were able to overcome the first hurdle for an umpire to join our ranks. The second barrier I wanted to reduce was the considerable cost involved in purchasing protective equipment. During the offseason we were able to source funding and sponsorship to overcome this barrier, which meant we could provide a pack of protective equipment and training manuals to an up-and-coming umpire at a heavily subsidised rate. It also meant we could provide a scholarship for one promising young umpire to help them with their development. With the funding and sponsorship agreements we now have in place it means we should be able to offer these packages for the foreseeable future.

Attendance at our pre-season and in-season theory and practical training continued to increase and we ran our first session designed specifically to train the nine umpires who were selected to attend the National Little League Charter Tournaments (including Little, Junior, Intermediate and Senior Leagues) this year.

The Division 1 Grand Final once again provided an exciting series and one that kept the umpires on their toes. I would like to congratulate that crew and all of the umpires who officiated in the final series across all the grades to ensure that the best team on the day was the victor.

Thank you to the umpires who made themselves available throughout the year and their families that let them do it. A huge thank you also to Fred Halligan and Russell King for their invaluable assistance once again.

I am proud that we have now rebuilt a solid foundation that we can leverage from and continue to grow the quality and quantity of umpires in this state. From here my focus will be on four main areas. Firstly, I intend to develop a sustainable structure to ensure that we optimise the use of any resources available to develop umpires and they are encouraged to improve. A considerable part of this involves engaging clubs to deliver training to their volunteer umpires. Secondly, I wish to improve our collaboration with other stakeholders, and particular clubs, to produce an outcome that benefits all parties. Thirdly, after speaking with a number of representatives in our country centres it is obvious that we need to have a greater presence in these areas. Lastly, I intend to continue to develop our accreditation resources such that, in time, we will have materials available for umpires at all levels, in the event that these are not produced by Baseball Australia. With these projects I hope that more people can enjoy the best seat in the house for the greatest game in the world.

The South Australian Baseball Scorers Association (SABSA) promotes the art of baseball scoring through encouraging, educating and representing scorers associated with SABL. We strive to ensure uniform interpretation of the Australian Baseball Rules through participation in a national accreditation program established by the Council of Australian Baseball Scorers (CABS).

SABSA continues to update our teaching strategies and learning resource material for scorers. Members are informed of rule variations and changes in accepted interpretations at our meetings, through email and via the SABSA website: sabaseballscorers.com.au. Nationally accredited scorers are required to maintain a log book of their scoring activities. In order for Level 3 scorers to maintain their accreditation, we require an annual revision session based upon information gathered through monitoring of current senior scoring practices and exams.

Congratulations this year must go to one of our new Level 3 scorers, Michael Phillips, who was selected to score at the National Women’s/Girls Championships in Geelong in April and to Enza Henty who was selected to score at the National Youth Championships in Victoria in January. Attending tournaments such as these adds to the scorers skills and also creates friendships among the scorers national community. Other opportunities for our scorers to be involved in tournament scoring here in South Australia have been in January at the Country Championships, the recent School Boys Championships at the beginning of May and the upcoming Junior League Tournament. A big thank you to all the scorers who have participated, and made these such successful events.

Clinics are currently being run in the northern suburbs to assist scorers to become accredited and towards the start of the new season there will be more clinics run for those in other areas. We welcome Linda and Olivia, two new Level 1 scorers this year who score in the Riverland; it was great to see their enthusiasm for scoring. Steve Eads has also provided IT training to increase the number of scorers who can use the automated system. Congratulations to Enza Henty who is now a Level 3 Accredited IT scorer.

Thank you to Nathan Davison and Tony Catt for listening and acting on our requests for better facilities for those scoring the Bite and league games at West Beach and hope that we can continue to improve the process this coming season.

Every year there are numerous extra jobs that need to be done and I would like to acknowledge the people who take on these jobs. They include entering games into TABS all season to provide statistics for the CAPPS Medal. We still don’t have an IT scorer at all clubs and this is being done by a small group, thank you for your time and efforts.

For keeping our website and IT equipment up to date we thank Steve Eads and Michael Phillips, for organising scorebooks and other jobs that pop up, thank you Lorraine, thank you Carol for liaising with Tony Catt for the use of his meeting room. The Association would like thank Tony for your support this year.

And of course the committee, who generously volunteer their time to make this Association such a useful body for all scorers, so that baseball, at all levels, can exist in SA.

S.A. entered the 2018 National Schoolboys Tournament (held at West Beach S.A. from the 30th of April to the 5th of May 2018), with high expectations especially following the successful campaign of the U/18 State Team in the recent National tournament.

Firstly, the coaching staff was assembled, comprising Scott Gladstone (Head Coach), Jim Gladstone (Assistant Coach), Lachy Eldridge (Assistant Coach) and David Hilderbrand (Team Manager).

Try-outs were organised in early March and were well attended with approximately 30 players attempting to be selected in the 16 man final team. The participants included some of the Under 18 State team, some from the Under 16 State team as well as players from the local and country competitions. Players were tested on throwing arm strength, running speed as well as general fielding and batting ability. A 16 man squad was selected which was considered to be highly talented and one which could succeed deep into the tournament.

Intensive trainings were held at West Beach throughout the month of April in order to prepare the team as well as possible. Trainings were well attended and players participated with enthusiasm. Players were expected to display elite standards at all times, follow the coach’s instructions and participate with enthusiasm at every training. The trainings were designed to attempt to get the team to gel as unit as well as highlighting individual player’s strengths and working on weaknesses. The coaches’ objective was to have every athlete to complete the tournament an improved player in both the physical or mental aspects of the game. Some difficulties were encountered during trainings, such as weather, country players travel, personal issues and 2 players selected to attend training in the USA.

The Tournament overall was successful without achieving the ultimate goal of winning the title. The team completed the minor round undefeated by winning games against all the competing states and therefore entered the finals stage with high expectations. We then won one of the semi finals which qualified us for the Grand Final. Unfortunately, we fell just short losing 2-1 in extra innings to N.S.W. Overall the team’s performance could be summarised by saying that the pitching exceeded expectations, the hitting was spasmodic (lacked consistency against the higher quality pitching and was unable to put the opposition under enough pressure), the defense was excellent until some lapses in the intense environment of the finals and base running is an aspect that requires focus in the future.

In summary, the coaching staff was very proud of the team’s performance and feel that each individual player will exit the tournament a better player and gained valuable experience, as well as having a great deal of enjoyment.

The 2017 Bite Academy was held at the Adelaide Shores Baseball Complex over the course of 13 weeks and was facilitated by my predecessor, Landon Hernandez. There was a total of 94 participants, and was separated into Little League, Junior League and Elite groups. Practice sessions were held on Monday and Wednesday evenings, in addition to Saturday mornings for the Little League and Junior League kids. The Elite kids worked out on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturday mornings. The focus for the duration of the academy revolved around all facets of baseball and was divided into offensive and defensive nights.

On review of previous academies, the decision was made to reduce the duration of the program from 13 weeks to 8 weeks, and not start until July. The hope with this is to produce a high-quality program, where there are no clashes between other forms of baseball, so maximal improvement can be seen. The program will also be renamed the Adelaide Bite High Performance Academy, with the non-scholarship academy continuing to hold the Bite Academy name. 2018 will see the implementation of a full-time sports psychologist who will work with the High-Performance Academy on a weekly basis for the duration of the 8 weeks, in addition to UniSA coming on board to do all our testing and collation of information to better help with data collection and feedback streams for the athletes.

The Bite Academy will still be run for younger, non-scholarship athletes and will be divided into offensive and defensive nights. Parents were given the options of whether to enrol in the full academy, or just do either the Monday or Wednesday sessions for a lesser cost. This will hopefully ease the demand on coaches and allow for maximal instruction in specific areas. There will be some coaches who will coach at this academy and log hours in order to attain their Level 2 Coaches Accreditation.

The revamped academies will hope to maximise time on field, with minimal clashes so that progress can be optimised. The fact that the academies are running slightly later in the year will better prepare the kids for upcoming trials and season.

The idea of these academies will be to get each and every athlete to the next level, which is completely relative to the particular individual.

With the amazing interest in Womens’ Baseball League being played in Adelaide it was impressive to see thirteen teams nominate for the 2017/2018 Season.

With only two teams run by Baseball SA, this showed that the local baseball clubs are joining in and being a part of the growth of women’s baseball.

This year Baseball SA formed a Womens & Girls Advisory Group to oversee the Women’s League, covering growth, playing rules & pathways.

The advisory group was made up of a diverse group being Marie Davis, Jacqui Dunn, Ashley Mossman, Julie Wadham and Kirsten Webb. Headed up by Bianca Smith, Women’s Baseball League Director & Lawrie Moore as Chairperson.

Friday night competition proved to be a winner with the ladies playing home and away games, utilising both of West Beach’s diamonds and clubs home grounds.

Simone Wearne was appointed Head Coach for the Women’s State Team to compete in Geelong for the National Championships. Simone was able to secure Risa Nakashima, five-time World Cup Gold Medallist for Team Japan, to come to Adelaide and assist coach and prepare the team. Along with Julie Wadham & Lawrie Moore. Risa’s time in Adelaide was outstanding and lasting in raising the standard of training, programs and playing culture. Playing for the bronze medal round, unfortunately finished 4th , but was an outstanding effort from all the ladies involved.

Thanks to the scorers and umpires for the support during the season.

Congratulations to Sarah-Jane Jamieson from the Gawler Rangers Baseball Club on winning the M.V.P Award for the season.

A big acknowledgement must go to Bianca Smith and Landon Hernandez for their hard work in co-ordinating the Women’s League and improving the awareness of women in baseball via social media and website.

Four girls from SA played in the U15’s National Championships in Geelong. What a great experience. This will assist with their development. Well done to Georgia Davis, Angela Mourtzios, Alkira Prior and Ella Carson.

Our big challenge will be to start an Under 15’s competition which we are hoping to get up and running this coming season.

The 2017/18 Adelaide Bite season was a great experience, with one of the main highlights being the ability to really see the growth in terms of our depth as a state.

This season saw a total of 12 import players pull on the Bite colours. We saw affiliated import players Stephen Lohr, Darius Day and Isaias Quiroz come from the Texas Rangers, and the Houston Astros were represented by Rodrigo Ayarza. There was the return of the ever popular Loek Van Mil. We also saw the introduction of Taiwanese legend Tai Shan Chang, who was an immediate hit with the fans, in addition to being invaluable with the young players on our roster. Max Beatty and Chris Powell were featured in the starting rotation throughout the year. Ryo Koura was added to the rotation down the stretch and was incredible, really leading the rotation. Other import players who represented the Bite this year were Max Brown, Chris Burkholder and Matt Chen who through his kamikaze style of play made many a fan happy.

It could be very easy to get caught up in the win/loss record of 11-29, however there were numerous positives that prove that the future is bright for baseball in the state of South Australia. The season saw the debuts of 9 home grown players in Curtis Mead, Mason Clavell, Brodie Arriola, Will Kortekaas, Tyson McKee, Dylan Ridding, Sean Maple, Harry Knuckey and Griffin Weber. This was in addition to the return of Jack O’Loughlin and Ky Hampton. Ryan Duncan relocated from QLD and saw some time as a development player throughout the year. These numbers are a real credit to the player development department at Baseball South Australia and a real indication of the future of baseball.

It was also exciting times for the Bite in terms of coaching, which for the first time in 4+ years had an all Australian staff. Luke Prokopec returned to the staff and was invaluable for the pitchers. Michael Dunn returned for a second year as third base coach and assistant coach, whilst Scott Gladstone was added to the staff and the hitting coach, was proved his worth through countless hours spent one on one with many of the young hitters. All 3 of these coaches were invaluable to me as a first-year manager, and I really look forward to continuing to grow and develop the sport in South Australia with these quality people.

All in all, the 2017/18 was a tremendous challenge. Although it is one we will be better off for in the long run. It allowed countless opportunities to review and reflect on all aspects of the game, which will only help us to continue to develop moving forward. I really look forward to seeing the continued improvements of young players such as Curtis Mead and Mason Clavell, and the continued development in leadership capacities of some of our older players.

As I mentioned with the players numerous times throughout the season; “the hardest of steel goes through the hottest of fire”. So all who were in the trenches for this season will be better for the experience in the long run.

The Under 16 tryouts started with over 50 players wanting to be part of the team that headed to Blacktown in January to compete at the National Youth Championships. Of those 50 athletes, 14 players made their debut representing SA with 6 returning for their second tour.

Our goals set before departing were to continue to improve and give ourselves a chance at playing off for a medal. I believe over the time of our preparation the boys did show great improvement and definitely gave themselves every chance to compete with the likes of Victoria and NSW.

Once again we competed in the Goodwill Series against the visiting USA team. This series is not only about winning but getting game time into everyone and getting used to each other in competition.

Tournament baseball is about making the most of your opportunities and although we played some good baseball throughout the first round had we taken a few more chances given we may have finished higher than 4th after the minor round. Just like last year, our game against Queensland was going to be the difference between finishing 4th or 5th and to the boy’s credit they hung on and qualified for the medal round.

Our medal round was a mixed bag, going down heavily in the first game against NSW then to bounce back and narrowly go down to Vic Blue 3 to 2 was a credit to the fight the boys showed, unfortunately that loss had us playing off for a bronze medal.

The bronze medal game was a disappointing result with a 7-3 loss, we gave up their first 4 runs unearned and was unable to take the chances that were given to us and again we had to settle for a fourth place finish.

I would like to take this time to thank Phil Hirschausen, Dave Sims and Darren Unger for their time and effort in helping the boys improve and develop as baseballers. To the parents, a thank you for allowing us to be a part of your son’s baseball pathway and to the players, congratulations on your efforts and the way you represented your family and state. Be proud and continue to work hard to achieve your goals.

In my third year as a state representative coach for South Australia, I was fortunate enough to have an extremely talented group of young men along with a very capable coaching staff. This was reflected with the success we had while in NSW, winning our first under 18 National Championship in 30 years. A lot of these boys also played in the Under 16 Championships 3 years ago which, at the time, was the first at that age division in 38 years. An amazing achievement ending almost 7 decades of winless tournaments for SA. Along with winning the tournament, the boys showed great professionalism off the field and made coaching this team an absolute pleasure. I must firstly make mention of the coaching staff that helped me along the way;

Tony Probert – Tony is a pleasure to work with. He has a very large knowledge for the game and brings his own unique personality to the field. He’s always smiling and always there for the boys to approach should anything go wrong. He is a very big part of this winning culture we have created and an asset to Baseball in SA.

Lachy Eldridge – Lachy has now been my pitching coach for 3 years and has done an exceptional job. In a high-pressure tournament like nationals Lachy always finds a way to have our pitchers take the mound with confidence. He to brings a wealth of knowledge and is loved by all members of the team.

Jeff Catt – Jeff lives in NSW and joined us for the tournament as our bullpen coach. Once again, Jeff is a crowd favourite amongst the players and did a huge job in helping us prepare for games and rotate our pitching staff.

Renae Kortekaas – Renae was a late addition this year coming on as our EO. She was an absolute pleasure to work with, always upbeat and always on time with everything. Her efforts as EO had a huge impact on our success.

SA finished the tournament with a batting average of .309, almost 30 points higher than any other team in the tournament. We led 9 of 10 offensive categories which is a massive effort. Along with this strong offensive performance, We also led the tournament in ERA, opposition batting average and total strike outs. Combining the strong offense with our defensive pitching stats you can see why we were such a strong outfit representing SA. We should be very proud of what these boys have achieved.

We also had a couple of personal achievements to go along with the success of the team. Curtis Mead won tournament MVP and Jarrod Miller won the tournament Golden Bat Award which is a credit to themselves, their states and their local club in West Torrens. Curtis finished the tournament with a batting average of .440 and a fielding average in the high 900s which is an amazing individual performance. Jarrod finished the tournament with a batting average of .452 again topping off an incredible tournament. In the Grand Final Jarrod lead the charge with 2 doubles and rather large homerun in the 7th which all but sealed the deal for SA. Both boys should be extremely proud of their achievements.

In concluding, this year’s team has set a bar of expectation for future state teams to strive to achieve. There performance both on and off the field was exceptional and the results followed. It becomes our duty to work on the next group of young players coming through to ensure that its not another 30 years before our next title is won.

In mid 2017, Baseball SA made the decision to take a chance on some new ideas and new opportunities in order to continue to propel their ever growing women’s program into unchartered territory. The move brought myself, Simone Wearne, in as the State Team Head Coach, and with it, a new group of staff to assist long term SA team member Julie Wadham in her role as Assistant Coach.

Lawrie Moore joined the program as an Assistant, and we were able to organise Japanese Coach/player Risa Nakashima to join the girls in Adelaide for a two month stint where she was able to take on a lot of the training session responsibility.

Risa, Lawrie and Julie were an amazing group of coaches to work with, and I cannot thank them enough for their commitment to the SA team’s development and organisation around not only team trainings, but individual sessions to accommodate areas of player weakness.

Risa, a five time World Cup gold medalist from Team Japan, and the 2016 World Cup gold medal winning pitching coach was an amazing asset to SA women’s baseball – not only providing the state team with a great teacher and leader, but also providing opportunity for the local women’s players in SA to learn more about the game. Her contribution to SA women’s baseball has been invaluable.

We were able to run three trials in November/December and finalise a group of players, plus a train-on squad, who were extremely committed to the vision and direction we were looking to take. The players involved in the program in 2017/18 have not only been able to take their games to a new level, but really take great strides in a program that is looking to really revitalize and reinvigorate where it’s going and what it wants to be.

A big change in culture and commitment was expected, and overall, there was a real change in what the team was able to bring to the table for 2018.

Our National Championships campaign in Geelong was a great success. We saw improvements in a number of areas, and although there is long way to go in terms of developing the culture and program that we know is what is required at a Nationals level – the team and players are on the right track.

It should be noted that while there are some notable improvements above statistically, the team placed in the higher pool (Pool A) for the first time in the team’s history. Therefore, the team played the top three teams an extra time, rather than the bottom placed teams an extra time.

Therefore, the statistical improvement is actually more telling than we think.

Outside of statistics though, the general professionalism of our program and the way we went about things was in every way a step in the right direction for SA women’s baseball. Some notable improvements/commitments over the past 8 months that have been made in this program include, but are not limited to the following:

The coaches and players all sacrificed a lot in order to commit to what we were doing, and without their hard work and willingness to get out of their comfort zones and work harder than ever, the result at the Nationals Tournament would not have been possible.

Baseball South Australia, in conjunction with Baseball Australia, Diamond Sports SA and Adelaide Shores, hosted the 2018 Australia Junior League Championship proudly presented by Bendigo Bank at West Beach, Adelaide from May 27th to June 1st 2018.

In their third year of hosting this event, Baseball South Australia, with the wonderful support of Diamond Sport SA and all their amazing volunteers, ensured that all players, officials and the thousands of spectators thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of the championship.

The Championship saw 6 days of competition with 48 games contested, with Hills walking away as the 2018 Australian Junior League Champions, who will represent the Australia Region at the Junior League World Series in Taylor, Michigan USA.

Baseball Australia is looking forward to what the future will bring with this event and the great partnership with Baseball SA and Diamond Sports SA.

Our campaign started in early December with tryouts held over 4 sessions. With 5 returning from last years team, there were 9 spots available for 30 kids who showed up. We tested the kids in various parts of the game and came up with a good squad of 14 boys plus 2 reserves.

We had a good mix of first and second year Under 13’s with a view to having a core group of boys available next year to build our next team around. We trained twice a week from January with the boys working on fundamentals along with game play and improving their knowledge of baseball. With a few of the boys straight out of Under 11’s it was pleasing to see them improve and get stronger with every session.

Tournament time came around with a couple of days of rain interruptions we finally got to play some baseball. Unfortunately, we went down the first 2 games which had us playing off in the 2v3 semi on Monday night.

In what was a great game of baseball we were in control for the most part thanks to the pitching of Kyle Gibbs. Kyle also hit very well to keep us in the lead till late in the game. A bases loaded in the park home run by the Rays tied the game up in the 5th. With bases loaded again in the 6th innings with none out we battled to get 2 outs but some heads up base running by the Rays plated the winning run. The boys played out of their skin and we as a coaching staff were so proud of the boys for the way they played along with the way they conducted themselves throughout the whole process.

Thanks to Andrew and Stuart for all your efforts over the past few months. Also, to the Mckees for your efforts as EOs. Also, thanks to Marnie for scoring for us.

Most of all thanks to the families for all the time you put in running the boys all over Adelaide and to the Marlins boys for your dedication to the program.

As I write this report, the Adelaide Rays Little League team is in full preparation for the National Championships which begin in Lismore on the 6th June.

We began trialling players in early December and the final team was announced in early January. The local tournament was held over the weekend of the 14th/15th April with a double header scheduled for the Saturday, then the finals on the Sunday.

Game 1 we went up against the Marlins and came away with a convincing 12-2 victory. Taiga Waugh went 3 2/3 innings with 5 strikeouts and some quality at bats were had from Luke Beckham, Brady Smith and Ben Ganley.

Game 2 saw us up against the Seahawks. The Seahawks jumped out of the blocks with 3 runs in the 1st inning courtesy of a long home run. From there on it became a pitcher’s duel and unfortunately we could not convert our opportunities and the score line finished at 3-0.

Game 3 was the semi-final scheduled for the Sunday but this was washed out due to the weather. We ended up playing a night game on the main Softball diamond which turned out to be a crazy game of Baseball. We went up against the Marlins again to book a spot to go to Lismore. The Marlins scored early leading 3 -0 going into the bottom of the 2nd inning. We came back with 3 of our own to tie up the game in that inning. The Marlins then scored 5 runs in the top of the 4th, we bounced straight back to match that with 5 runs of our own in the bottom of that inning courtesy of a Luke Beckham grand slam. Scores were then locked until the bottom of the 6th inning. We loaded up the bases with none out. The Marlins managed to get an out so we were in the same position with one out, the Marlins strike out our next hitter and the battery proceed to walk off the field thinking it was side away, our runner at 3rd scampers home to steal the run and win the game!

Game 4 was the gold medal game against the Seahawks. We were confident going into the game and knew we had the firepower to score runs – which we did – 12 of them! Unfortunately for us the Seahawks scored 16 to win the gold medal. We took a lot out of this game and must work hard on improving parts of game prior to going to Lismore.

Overall, the team has come together really well and we have high expectations at the National Tournament.

The 2018 Adelaide Seahawks team consists 12 players from Goodwood, Southern Districts and Sturt. Out of these 12 players, 4 were members of the Adelaide Seahawks Charter Team last year (Drew Davies, Nick Paparella, Jack Bushell and Mitchell Obst), 6 were members of the Seahawks Development Team last year (James Jorgensen, Ryder Cook, Josh Bradley, Jesse Zimmermann, Connor Nairn and Zach Altamura), with only 2 new faces to the Seahawks program in Billy Sutton and Hamish Gibbs. This gave us a good head start as all the players were familiar with the warm up and throwing programs with Seahawks Assistant Coaches James Bushell and Troy Cook implementing these at Goodwood and Southern Districts, respectively. Troy Cook was also the Seahawks Development Head Coach last year which was very helpful throughout the try outs by recognizing players and the improvement they have made.

A sign of good things to come for the Seahawks team started when all 12 members of the team played in the Under 13 finals series this year. Drew Davies, Nick Paparella, James Jorgensen and Ryder Cook of Southern Districts defeated their Seahawks counterparts Jack Bushell, Mitchell Obst, Josh Bradley, Billy Sutton, Jesse Zimmermann, Connor Nairn & Hamish Gibbs of Goodwood in the Semi Final before eventually falling to Adelaide in the Under 13 Div 1 Grand Final. Whilst the lone Sturt player in our team, Zach Altamura went one better than all his Seahawks teammates and was crowned the Under 13 Div 2 champions with his team. With all players getting a taste of finals baseball it proved to be a very valuable experience throughout our Charter Tournament with the team showing great resilience, a winning mentality and a ‘never say die’ attitude.

Mother Nature was not kind to us during the weekend of the Charter Tournament, however, we still managed to get the games in on Sunday 15th April. The Seahawks went through the tournament undefeated, claiming a 17-7 victory against the Marlins and a tough 3-0 win against the Rays, with Drew Davies hitting a key 3 run Home Run in the first inning whilst Jack Bushell and Nick Paparella combined for a no hitter with 4 2/3 and 1 1/3 innings, respectively. These two wins sealed our place in the Australian Little League Tournament in Lismore.

Friday 11th May was the night Adelaide Seahawks were crowned South Australian Little League Champions with the team earning their gold medals against a very tough Rays team. We knew it was going to be a high quality game just as our previous encounter was but I don’t think anyone expected a 16-12 ball game, especially after a very close 3-0 game previously. I believe this is where all the players’ finals experience was our advantage as we were trailing at the end of every completed inning until the end of the 5th. It was a very eventful, up and down game, just what all the spectators nerves needed!

The Seahawks Development Team also had a successful tournament, claiming two mercy-rule victories over the Marlins and Rays Development teams. With 6 Development players from last year’s team in the Seahawks Charter Team this year it is an exciting time to be a part of the Seahawks program and with all but 3 Seahawks moving up to Under 15s next year, I am looking forward to seeing more players make the transition from Seahawks Development to Seahawks Charter next year.

The Adelaide Pirates Charter Team is made up of the northern clubs and will be participating in the Australian Championships held in Adelaide commencing on the 26th May 2018. As with all of these charter teams, the selection process begins in October/November where trials are held to end up selecting 12-14 players.

As has been the case with all of my charter teams, we take the full complement of players to provide encouragement and development to as many players as possible each year. That, in my opinion, is the whole idea of the charter system; to stretch the talent pool as widely as possible not only to encourage all eligible players but also to continue to find the diamonds in the rough. It also applies to the coaching staff, where we reward coaches who have applied themselves in the grade at club level to continue their development and hopefully, the skills they learn from this environment can be taken back to club level which in turn, improves the overall competition. This year we have provided these opportunities to Darren Unger and Jon Barker and it is pleasing to report that they have been fantastic and really relished the opportunity. A pitching coach is essential to these teams and once again I teamed up with Dom Hodges for this role. Dom is not only a first class pitching coach but also brings many other assets and skills to the group. I am heavily reliant on Dom and thank him for his committed and professional efforts.

Our first stop is to compete in the State Championships in April against the southern side of Adelaide, namely the Adelaide Waves. Although both of us go through to the Nationals, my mantra is to establish strong team skills and an even stronger work ethic. We played some solid baseball during this tournament and overall, the coaching staff was really pleased with what we got out of it.

Next step is the Nationals in late May where the best bunch of 13-14 year olds converge on Adelaide to play at Diamond Sports SA. This is a big tournament, still highly valued by all states and consequently, the 20 best teams from around this vast country compete. It is a great stepping stone to the Under 16 State Team and from our point of view, has been integral in SA’s increased performances at this tournament. We are ready and raring to go, believe we have a very balanced side and look forward to putting our best foot forward in the Nationals. Hoping both the Waves and ourselves will be strongly supported by the local baseball fraternity. Hope to see you out there.

Our coaching staff consists of myself, Julian Smith (assistant coach), David Chandler (pitching coach) and Mitch Dawson (EO). It has been a pleasure working with these guys and we have all gelled very well.

The team consists of 14 players from various clubs which are: West Torrens, Glenelg, Goodwood, Sturt and Southern Districts. So there is a very good spread of talent over a number of clubs. We have picked a team that consists of 4 players who return for next year’s team, which is good for the team’s development for 2019.

Our trainings have been changed around to different clubs - West Torrens, Glenelg, Goodwood and Southern Districts. We have also been fortunate enough to utilise our great West Beach/Diamond Sports complex. This is very handy since the tournament will be held there.

The State Tournament gave us a good look at our boys as a Waves group in action for the first time. Coming up against a Pirates team full of 11 players from the 2 top Under 15’s team in the Baseball SA competition was always going to be a tough ask.

The Waves boys gave up a 4 run first innings which we could not peg back and ended up losing 8 – 6 in a tight game. I was pretty proud of the way the boys didn’t give up and fought it out all the way the end. In the second game I changed our side around, playing the less experienced boys. This was a good guide on what we will have to work on and who plays better in what position. We found ourselves beaten extremely easy 13 – 0 and the Pirates took out the State Championships.

Since then our boys have had their ups and down at trainings. It’s a fine balance between keeping them interested and enjoying trainings or boredom setting in and seeing them slack off. Most of the time the boys have done well. School camps and sickness have seen some of our lads miss trainings which is not ideal, but it can’t be helped.

The boys are all getting along well and there has been plenty of fun being had at trainings.

We are all looking forward to the Australian Junior League Championships starting on May the 27th. Our team goal is to make the finals (top 8). Then from there, anything can happen!!

2017 Team

After winning the National Senior League Championship in May the team was off to the World Series in Easley, South Carolina in late July.

All teams stayed at Clemson University which was a great experience for the boys and a big eye opener to Division 1 sporting facilities.

We finished the World Series tournament with a 2-2 record. After losing the lead in the first game and eventually losing the game the boys bounced back with 2 wins. Our last game was against Panama and the winner was on the road through to the championship game which was live on ESPN. The score line got a bit out of hand in the end and did not reflect the game and the efforts given by the players.

Being the first team from South Australia to make it to the World Series in any age group was a massive pleasure and something we were all very proud of.

There was a large contingent of parents that made the trip which was great to see. Even the locals and other teams became fans of the Armada boys.

The trip was a very special experience for all involved. We had a great bunch of boys that played really well together. I also would like to thank my assistant coaches Darren Fidge and Jamie Knuckey and EO John McClure. 2018 Team

Armada lost to the Titans in two games in the State Championships this year.

This group of players have improved immensely in such a short amount of time since the State Championships. In the National Championships in Lismore the team finished in first place in our pool. This was a huge effort. Defensively we only gave up 8 runs in 5 games of pool play.

I am very happy and proud of the boys. For the returning players the team next year should be exciting with another year of experience.

A big thanks to my assistant coaches Jamie Knuckey and Darren Fidge and EO Dave Stewart. and the boys appreciate all the effort and hard work that you have put in.

The Titans charter season kicked off later than normal with tryouts starting at the end of January, waiting for the return of the state team participants. 23 young hopefuls rolled out to put their case forward for selection, with the final team of 14 from 5 of the 7 northern clubs being picked by the 5th of February. Practice commenced shortly after with just one day a week, then ramping up to 3 sessions in a 7 day period as the summer season wound down.

This year the squad seemed pretty determined to put in a good showing at the state championship with recent results falling the south’s way and beating the Armada two games to zero, on a rain affected weekend in April. With both teams advancing to Nationals in May, we went straight back to work the following week and continued our normal practice sessions, gaining valuable confidence heading towards the Lismore tournament.

A hard challenge was set for us at the national titles being included in a tough pool with all the top qualifiers from other states bar one. We completed the pool round qualifying 2nd in our group on run differential after a 3 way tie with Cronulla and Southern Mariners, all on a 4-1 record. This teed up another encounter with our SA comrades, this time in a national competition semi-final.

The Titans finished with a silver medal behind tournament favourite and formidable foe Cronulla, a team that have already claimed titles in both little & junior leagues, going down in the gold medal decider 7 to 3. This squad was outstanding in all facets – they played terrific team orientated baseball, lived well together and had impeccable behaviour for the journey, a credit to their parents.

As a unit we would like to thank Baseball SA as well as East Torrens, Henley & Grange and Kensington Baseball Clubs for the use of their facilities for try outs and practice, in particular the Cardinals for hosting our fundraiser. I personally am saying thank you to my assistant Darren Roberts and Luke Chandler for their dedication and knowledge, as well as Sue Ball (EO) for her tireless efforts, and also Karryn Przibilla for scoring both events.

On our last night in Lismore I was asked by one of the parents whether I thought at the start of the tournament that we would be competing in the final game? The answer was YES, they are an incrediblegroup of kids and deserved the fitting result.

INDIANS PROVE TOO GOODRobert Laidlaw

Goodwood became the 2017/18 division one baseball premier after spanking Port Adelaide 19-1 in game three of the grand final series at Diamond Sports, Adelaide Shores.

After game one on Friday and Saturday’s game two both required extra innings, with the series tied at one game apiece, a titanic battle was expected but never materialised.

A walk-off, bases-loaded walk in the 11th inning by Brodie Arriola gave the Magpies the edge in Friday’s game one.

It seemed the Indians would win most of the way, but Port’s fighting spirit and enthusiastic approach triumphed in the end.

A big two-out hit by Ben Wigmore scored two runs for Goodwood in the fourth frame, with Magpie hurler Dylan Brammer making the cut-off and beating Wigmore back to the bag for the third out.

Port answered immediately in the bottom of the fourth with one run on Alex Carter’s home run, then just missed out on a second run when Troy Weinert attempted to score from first base on Todd Langman’s double but was gunned down at the plate when Jeremy Cresswell’s relay throw was on the money.

It did not take long for the Magpies to draw level at 2-2, when in the fifth frame, Patrick Inglis hit a RBI double, but a bit of fortune helped Goodwood when a wild pitch hit the backstop and rebounded to catcher Joe Deroche-Duffin, who easily threw the runner out at third base.

Dushan Ruzic came out of the bullpen for the Magpies to start the eighth inning, and after retiring the first two batters he faced, surrendered a walk to Josh Cakebread, a double to Cresswell and a two-run, broken-bat hit up the middle by Deroche-Duffin, for Goodwood to take a 4-2 lead.

But Port again fought back, in the bottom of the eighth, when, with two out, Arriola and Weinert walked, and Langman batted both home with another huge double – to tie the ball-game up, again, at 4-4.

Neither side looked like scoring in the 10th, and after a double play ended the Indians 11th, Port struck gold.

After the first Magpie batter was out, Brammer hit a double and pumped his arms skywards in a motion to encourage his team-mates, Duncan Izaaks singled and Carter was intentionally walked, to load the bases. Teenager Arriola then nervously laid off an 0-3 pitch to earn the walk and bat the winning run home.

In another extra-inning thriller, Goodwood evened the series with a 5-4 victory over Port Adelaide in Saturday’s game two.

Stefan Welch walked, stole second base and scored on an error to give Goodwood a 1-0 lead in the second frame, then in the fourth, Welch singled, Galpin doubled and Wigmore hit a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.

But Patrick Inglis levelled the game in the bottom of the fifth with a huge two-run home run.The deadlock was broken in the eighth frame when the Indians scored twice, first on Chris Horne’s RBI single then a wild pitch, to go 4-2 up.

But the Magpies came back with a run in the eighth, on Luke Rackebrandt’s RBI grounder, then in the bottom of the ninth, Inglis lead off with another dinger to tie the ball game up and force extra innings.Goodwood relief pitcher Darren Fidge ran out an infield hit to the right side, off the pitcher’s glove, to start the 10th, but fell down injured and was replaced by Toby Baldock, who stole second base, went to third on Simon Galpin’s single and scored on a wild pitch.

Matt Watkins came in to pitch the bottom half of the 10th for the Indians and retired Port, four up and three down, to send the series to a Sunday decider.

Goodwood set the tone in the first frame of the third game, when, after one out, Cakebread singled, Cresswell doubled, and an error scored the first run, with Stefan Welch belting a three-run dinger to put the Indians 4-0 up.

Matt Watkins started the deciding clash from the mound for Goodwood and retired three of the first four Magpie batters for no damage.

An outfield muffed fly by Port with two out gifted the Indians a run in the second frame, which was followed by a Welch RBI double, to extend the lead to 7-0 – with shock waves reverberating around the ground, as the realisation that a nail-biter did not look imminent.

Over the next few innings the Magpies managed to get base-runners on but could not push through with a score, their best chance the bottom of the fifth dig, when they had loaded bases with one out, but Watkins struck out a batter, and a pop up ended the threat.

For its part Goodwood continued to tack on runs, with a pair in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth to go 11-0 up entering the seventh inning.

Then in an unbelievable sequence, the Indians ensured the premiership was theirs with eight runs.Cameron Langley and Owen Hughes hit singles, which forced a pitching change.

Dennis Christiansen loaded the bases with a hit, Cakebread hit the ball up the middle for two runs, Cresswell and Brendan Pett hit singles, with Welch collecting his fourth hit of the game, for another RBI, forcing another pitching change.

With none out and four runs in, and the bases loaded, Goodwood was still not finished, as Galpin deposited the first pitch over the fence for a grand slam home run.

Matt Dunn reached on an error and Langley collected his second hit of the inning, before a double play and then the final out ended the onslaught at eight runs for the seventh inning, and an incredible 19-0 lead.

Requiring 10 runs in the bottom of the seventh to avoid the mercy rule end to the game, the first Port batter grounded out, which saw Watkins reach his pitch count and he was relieved on the mound, after throwing 6.1 innings for three hits and five K2s.

The Magpies did muster a couple of hits and a run, but it was never going to be enough, and the game ended with Goodwood deserving premiers – capping a successful period of 20 consecutive years in the finals, for 10 premiership-deciders and five flags.

There were numerous players eligible for grand final MVP honours, but for Watkins to go so deep in a crucial game when pitching was so important, he was a deserving winner
