Blockchain Technology Reduces Risk of Counterfeits
o Blockchain technology is increasingly being utilised worldwide for the
purposes of reducing the production, distribution, and eventual usage of
counterfeit medicines, which include products within the global Allergy

towards artificial intelligence, digitised patient records, and 3D-printed

o Both IBM and SAP are currently working on the implementation of
blockchain solutions. More specifically, SAP is working with
pharmaceutical manufacturers such as Merck, GSK, Boehringer
Ingelheim, among others, for the verification of returned drugs.
o Furthermore, IBM Research’s solution involves a mobile interface and
permissioned blockchain back-end, enabling authorised parties to initiate
actions, finish transactions, and track progress.
o The implementation of blockchain technology is an innovation that is likely
to benefit the global pharmaceutical market, which will in turn benefit the
Allergy Care market, through mitigating the challenge of counterfeit
products as well as reducing costs.

COVID-19 Increases Sales of Nose Spray
o With the recent outbreak of the COVID-19 virus locally, the South African
Allergy Care market is expected to follow global trends and see an
associated increase in sales of nasal membrane blocking sprays.
o Globally, Nexa Allershield, an anti-allergy nose spray, experienced 688%
growth in the UK, as the product blocks the nasal membrane, which
reduces the risk of airborne diseases from being absorbed by the body.
o The same brand is currently available in South Africa and is being
distributed by Pharma Dynamics. Nicole Jennings, the company’s
spokesperson, emphasised the importance of the product as a
preventative measure and not a cure, as the product only creates a gel-
like shield in the nasal cavity which has been proven to block particles that
cause the common cold and flu.
o Moreover, following global trends, the South African consumer has begun
to ‘panic’ buy, with pharmacies such as Clicks and Dis-Chem having to
implement rationing practices for medicine.
o This suggests that, similarly to the UK, there has been an increase in the
demand for medical products, such as Nexa Allershield, that have been
identified as potentially helping to reduce the chance of contracting the
COVID-19 virus.
o As a result of the ongoing concern regarding COVID-19 amongst
consumers, it is likely that the popularity of anti-allergy nose sprays is
likely to increase due to their perceived ability to prevent infection.
