DANISH ROYAL VISIT TO SOUTH AFRICA

THE KINGDOM OF DENMARK – ONE OF THE OLDEST MONARCHIES IN THE WORLDDenmark has been a monarchy since 958 AD. Since 1849 Denmark has been a constitutional monarchy. The present head of state HM Queen Margrethe II of The Kingdom of Denmark ascended to the throne on 14 January 1972 succeeding her father HM King Frederik IX.

Rights such as freedom of expression, freedom of religion, and freedom of assembly for all citizens were originally verified in the 1849 Constitutional Act.

The political system of Denmark is that of a multi-party structure, where several parties can be represented in Parliament at any one time. Since 28 June 2015, the Government has consisted of the Liberal Party (Venstre) with Lars Løkke Rasmussen as the Prime Minister.

Denmark is an open and globalised economy and has a strong private sector consisting of mainly small and medium-sized enterprises (more than 90%). Denmark is consistently ranked among the best countries in the world for doing business. Trustworthiness, innovation, corporate social responsibility, quality, global outlook and hard work are words associated with Danish companies. Based in a relatively small country, Danish companies know what it takes to work in partnerships and succeed internationally.

FOREWORD BY HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS THE CROWN PRINCE It is with great pleasure that I embark on yet another visit to South Africa. When I was here last I joined heads of state and dignitaries from all over the world in a solemn farewell to former President Nelson Mandela. Before then, on a more joyous occasion, I visited South Africa during the very successful 2010 Soccer World Cup.

Today, I am pleased to lead – and to lend my support to – a sizeable delegation of Danish companies. They represent various fields within wind power, biogas and energy efficiency; innovative and intelligent water solutions as well as agri-processing and food production.

Denmark takes great pride in being among the world leaders in the fields that are represented in the delegation – fields where Danish companies combine innovation and experience in a unique way.

These sectors have been carefully chosen to match areas of high priority to South Africa. They hold great opportunities for increasing bilateral trade and providing sustainable solutions to the mutual benefit of our two countries.

It is my great hope that this visit will contribute to a strengthened friendship between South Africans and Danes and also form a valuable partnership for years to come.

I am looking forward to returning to your extraordinary country.

CROWN PRINCE

His Royal Highness the Crown Prince

GROWING THE GREEN ECONOMY TOGETHER By Eva Kjer Hansen, Minister for Environment & Food

Troels Lund Poulsen, Minister for Business and Growth

There are several good reasons why South Africa is the preferred destination for Danish companies who wish to do business on the African continent. Strong institutions, substantial public investments in infrastructure and a steadily growing middle-class of consumers cement South Africa’s position as the entry point of choice.

Therefore, we are truly pleased that His Royal Highness the Crown Prince of Denmark will lead this business delegation to South Africa between 2-4 November 2015. The business delegation consists of market leaders in the fields of renewable energy & energy efficiency, water & environment, and food & agriculture. South Africa and Denmark are already long-term partners with regards to renewable energy, and during the Royal Visit we will formally launch a partnership for water.

A strengthened government-to-government partnership between South Africa and Denmark in this regard will benefit both countries in terms of economic growth, job creation and the environment. We wish to share Danish know-how with our South African partners and hope that the Royal Visit will further strengthen our green economy cooperation.

DANISH COMPANIES LOOK TO SOUTH AFRICA The partnership between South Africa and Denmark goes back to the struggle for democracy and the transition process after 1994. Since then, South Africa has gone through a remarkable economic development and is now counted among the major economies globally.

In part due to our historic ties, South Africa is already a close economic partner and many Danish companies are deeply engaged in this attractive market with investments worth millions of Rands. They focus strongly on CSR and assist in skills transfer, inclusion and job creation. Still, I believe that opportunities remain for companies that wish to build on the solid platform that is our bilateral government cooperation – not least in the energy and water sectors and also in relation to agricultural development.

I am therefore both pleased and honoured that His Royal Highness The Crown Prince of Denmark accompanied by the Minister for Environment and Food, Ms Eva Kjer Hansen, and the Minister for Business and Growth, Mr Troels Lund Poulsen, will lead a business delegation of a wide range of Danish companies within the energy, water and food/agriculture sector to South Africa.

I am convinced that the Royal Visit will serve to highlight business opportunities that will spur growth in both our countries. And I expect it will prove an excellent catalyst to further build on our strong political and economic ties and forge new partnerships – both public and private – for the future.

SOUTH AFRICA – GATEWAY TO AFRICA By Thomas Bustrup, Deputy Director General Confederation of Danish Industry

Anne Lawaetz Arhnung, Deputy CEO Danish Agriculture & Food Council

Søren Rasmussen, General Manager Danish Wind Export Association

In two short decades, South Africa has become a significant regional, political and economic power. South Africa ranks highest in Africa on the “Ease of Doing Business” index. The interesting investment climate has attracted many Danish companies, who both invest and trade with South Africa.

Furthermore, South Africa is the gateway to the Sub-Saharan Continent. The African continent has six out of ten of the world’s fastest growing markets. These markets sustain growth and employment for all of Africa.

Therefore, we are delighted that His Royal Highness the Crown Prince of Denmark, accompanied by the Minister for Environment and Food, Ms Eva Kjer Hansen, and the Minister for Business and Growth, Mr Troels Lund Poulsen, has decided to lead a strong business delegation to South Africa 2–4 November 2015.

There is a good match between Danish strongholds and the needs and political priorities of South Africa. Today, the ideal strongholds among Danish companies are identified within renewable energy and energy efficiency, water and environment and agriculture and food.

Solid partnerships with South African partners and business associates have proven valuable in creating the right commercial environment – providing and sharing experience, know-how and new solutions.

We thank you for the opportunity to visit your beautiful country. We are certain that this visit will strengthen the trade and economic ties between our two countries – bringing growth, prosperity and jobs to our countries. We are looking forward to the coming days in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Thank you to the South African and Danish companies for participating in the planned activities.

South Africa’s very ambitious climate and energy policies include reducing carbon emissions by 34% by 2020 and increasing the clean energy share of the national energy mix to 20% by 2025. As a result, South Africa has become one of the world’s most attractive countries for investing in renewable energy. Meanwhile, the South African Government has announced further substantial investments in the country’s energy infrastructure to respond to the growing demand for energy.

Denmark has for long supported the introduction of renewable energy in South Africa, more specifically, to the regulatory framework, pilot wind farms and by mapping wind resources. The partnership between Denmark and South Africa is still progressing with current support to capacity building, grid connection, energy efficiency and to climate change goals.

Since 1980, Denmark has grown to become a global leader in the development of new sustainable technologies and solutions in the energy sector. During the same period, the Danish economy has grown by almost 80% without increasing gross energy consumption. Denmark is proud to be able to share its solutions and inspire nations, companies and citizens all over the world to invest in green growth.

NOTES

2222

South Africa is a water scarce country and faces many structural challenges in relation to ageing infrastructure, pollution etc. To address these challenges, the South African Government is planning for substantial infrastructure investments and is seeking smart solutions to managing water resources more efficiently in addition to increasing the purification of water.

Against this background, Denmark and South Africa are entering into a strategic partnership within the water and environment sector this year, facilitating an exchange of experiences and know-how and paving the way for public-private partnership opportunities.

Water consumption in Denmark comes entirely from groundwater that is clean, safe and drinkable – even tap water is not chlorinated. Even though agriculture and industry account for two thirds of the total water consumption in Denmark, significant reductions in water footprint have already been achieved, particularly within the processing industries.

In short, Danish companies have a lot of relevant expertise in this field and the Royal Visit provides an excellent platform for advancing South African – Danish partnerships throughout the entire water cycle and within the environmental sector.

CocoaFair – A social business and chocolate producer

Being a social business does not mean we are a charity. It means we are a business firstly, but we take full responsibility for how we make our money, the impact we have in our communities and the environment along the supply chain. We know we are not able to solve the complex social problems plaguing the world but we are very aware of our opportunities to maximise our positive impact and minimise our negative impact. We like to know where our cocoa beans come from, which is why we buy directly from the producers. This enables us to ensure that the beans have been organically grown and also that the people involved in the cultivation of these products have not been exploited. Fair Trade is important for us, but it is equally important that we trade fairly across the entire supply chain.

From aid to trade in South Africa

South Africa and Denmark share historic ties, dating back to the struggle for democracy and the transition process after 1994. South Africa has come a long way and so has the bilateral cooperation. From partnering on development, we now engage in a partnership on equal terms. In a nutshell: We’ve gone from aid to trade.

To fully embrace our relationship, the Embassy of Denmark keeps a wide variety of instruments at its disposal. On the political level, the Embassy works to strengthen the strategic relationship through the annual senior-official consultations and our renewable energy programme. Meanwhile, the Embassy assists Danish companies in the South African market. Lastly, it organises a number of cultural activities with a view to nurturing the long standing relationship.
