SOUTH AFRICA

I got off the the plane to see the beautiful growing city of Johannesburg. With small shanty towns in the background. I automatically smelled the vast ocean filled with fish. The warm air and sunny days are the best here. I also like the mountains in the background. I even have a daily routine, like I always go to the same fruit stand. Some of the countries near South Africa Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. But there is two oddly placed countries both inside of South Africa; these countries are Lesotho and Swaziland. One thing I have seen a lot if is apartheid. It is every where but I will tell you more in a later post card. SEE YOU SOON!

Here in South Africa there has been several severe diseases that have been pretty catastrophic. The two main diseases have been HIV/AIDS. They are pretty infectious, so much that every 1in 5 adults are infected. Also many people have malnutrition. Well it makes sense since half of South Africa is lacking in basic sanitation such are a safe way of getting rid of waste or even having running water. But there has been other major diseases and infections here such as Malaria, Tuberculosis and Cholera. Sorry for leaving you such a sad post card but I promise the next will be happier. Here in South Africa there is many religions including Christianity, Islam ,Hinduism and Judaism. In the Islamic religion women wear head coverings also knows as hijabs. Also here in South Africa there is many languages making it such a diverse country. Most of the languages here I had not even heard about like Afrikaans which originates from 17thCentury Dutch dialects. Other smaller languages are Zulu, Tswana , Xhoso, Sotho. Since I don’t know any of the languages here its good that English is one of the languages. Due to colonialism the English became a official language since the British conquered here. South Africa is divided …sort of…because some people live in rich urban areas and some live in small poor shantytowns. Some people also like chorus and traditional folk music. People here like braais they are just like barbeques here during the summer but they are bigger. One thing I also like here is the roadside fruit and vegetable stands they are so convenient. Another thing I like is a delicious desert called milk tart. That is what I got so far, SEE YOU SOOOON.

We stopped at a historical museum, and we saw nice houses with Caucasian people. And other parts had shanty’s, and shacks with mostly African people. This is called Apartheid. Apartheid is when people are separated by race.

We stopped at another historical museum about colonialism. I found out that the British ruled South Africa from Cape colony in 1820. Then the British clashed with the Boers defeating them in 1902. Finally in May 31 1961 South Africa finally gained their needed independence. But the Afrikaner National Party put into place a harsh program of apartheid. Like said in the previous post card apartheid is racism. People where divided by color and race. People boycotted and strike for the stop of apartheid. Here the president is elected by parliament on the basis at the majority party’s recommendation. South Africa’s economy has many exports such as gold and diamonds that are mostly exported to U.S.A . Most of the diamonds come from the Cullinan diamond mine near Pretoria, South Africa. That the end of my wonderful adventure see you soon back at home

Today in South Africa, people are fighting many diseases and infections including, Tuberculosis, HIV and AIDS, Malaria, and malnutrition. Like I said in one of the previous post cards, HIV and AIDS has become an epidemic in South Africa. South Africa has a rich economy and they have high standard living in most urban areas.
