Our History:
In 1997, two independent Trenton hospitals merged to form a comprehensive
healthcare network known as Capital Health. Today, Capital Health is a growing
healthcare organization that is accredited by the Joint Commission and received
Magnet status three times in recognition of its quality patient care, innovations in
professional nursing practice and nursing excellence. It is comprised of two hospitals
(Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton and Capital Health Medical Center
in Hopewell), and an ambulatory clinic in Trenton (433 Bellevue Ave, Trenton).

Population(s) and Community Served:
Mercer County, located centrally in the western portion of the state, has an estimated
population of 371,537 as of 2014, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Mercer
County’s population experienced a 1.3% growth increase since 2010. There are
approximately 1,622 persons per square mile. Of the population, 22% are under the age
of 18 and 13.5% are 65 years of age and older. The county is 51% female.
Mercer County occupants are predominantly White (non-Hispanic) and represent 52.6%
of the population, less than the state representation of 57.6%. Blacks are the largest
minority group at 21.1%, more than the state representation of 14.7%. The second and
third largest minorities are Hispanic and Asian at 16.2% and 10%, respectively.
Languages other than English spoken at home account for 28.2% of the Mercer County
households. Of the residents over the age of 25, 87.3% are high school graduates and
38.8% have a bachelor degree or higher. The median household income in Mercer
County is reported at $73,480 for 2009-2013 with 11.2% of the population living below
the poverty level.
As of 2013, the U.S. Census reported the city of Trenton to have 84,349 occupants with
a declining growth of – 0.7% since April 1, 2010. There are 25.1% persons under the
age of 18 and 8.8% aged 65 or older. Blacks account for 52% of the population, Whites
(non-Hispanic) account for 13.5% and Hispanics account for 33.7%. Languages, other
than English spoken at home, account for 37% of the households in Trenton. Of the
residents over the age of 25, 71.1% are high school graduates. Only 10.9% of Trenton
residents have a bachelor degree or higher.
The health status of Mercer County residents is lower than the rest of the state in that it
demonstrates poorer birth outcomes (9% premature, 8.7% low birth weight, 1.7% very
low birth weight) with more high risks pregnancies (1% with no prenatal care, 7.6%
using tobacco while pregnant, 1.4% using alcohol, and 1.8% using drugs).
In Mercer County, there is a high prevalence rate of persons living with HIV/AIDS (410.5
per 100,000 in Mercer County with a 79% of this population in the City of Trenton) and
higher incidence rates for certain cancers (623 per 100,000 all sites; 64.1 per 100,00 for
lung/bronchus). There are also higher prevalence rates for hypertension (26%),
diabetes (9.5%) overweight or obesity (62.7%) and smoking (15%).
Although Trenton region residents are served by three Hospitals (Capital Health Medical
Center-Hopewell, Capital Health Regional Medical Center, and St. Francis Medical
Center), as well as Henry J. Austin with three sites, and a city health clinic, most do not
have a “medical home” and access many disconnected providers as the need arises.
82.7% of Mercer County residents have a primary care physician. Additionally, Trenton
residents are admitted at a rate of 1,294 per 10,000 population as compared to the
national rate of 1,140 per 10,000 as they are generally sicker when admitted and must
often be readmitted for lack of follow-up care.
Nearby Bucks County is the fourth most populous county in the state of Pennsylvania.
As of 2014, the U.S. Census Bureau reported a population of 626,685. Of the
population, 21.8% are under age of 18 and 16.2% are age 65 and older. The population
is 51% female.
Residents in Bucks County are significantly White (non-Hispanic) comprising 85.8% of
the population. Blacks and Hispanics are very much a minority at 4.0% and 4.7%,
respectively. Only 10.9% of all households speak a language other than English. Of the
residents aged 25 and older, 93.3% are high school graduates and 35.8% have a
bachelor degree or higher. The median household income reported in 2009-2013 is
$76,555 and 5.4% of the population is reportedly living below the poverty level.
Our Regional Medical Center services a population that is reported at time of
registration to be 76% non-Hispanic/Latino, 0.5% Mexican, 1.7% Puerto Rican, 0.2%
Cuban, 4.7% South or Central American, 12% other Spanish, 4% unknown and .97%
undeclared. Our system does not differentiate between Caucasian and African
American.
Our Hopewell Medical Center services a similar population. Their population is reported
as 85% non-Hispanic/Latino, .45% Mexican, 1.6% Puerto Rican, .07% Cuban, 3.7%
South/Central American. 8.5% Other Spanish, 1% unknown and .03% undeclared.
As you can see from the patient population, the percentages are rather similar between
the two campuses.
