Our next “Sounds of Joy”, now called “Joy ofSounds – Sounds of Joy”, is scheduled onMonday & Tuesday, April 10 & April 11,2006. It is co-hosted by our organization andPacific Music Foundation, presenting aspecial guest from Germany. Dr. ReinerHaus, Ph.D., an accredited music therapistand a researcher in music therapy and specialeducation will give 3 free presentations atUH Manoa, at Kapiolani Community College
and at Mission Memorial Auditorium indowntown Honolulu. The topics include musictherapy with children developmentally delayed,multiply handicapped, hearing impaired and CIand prematurely born, and music’s impact onphysiological and psychological health. Livemusic and dance will also be provided for yourrelaxation and enjoyment. A suggested, freewilldonation to the event, $20 general / $10students & seniors will be appreciated. In March 2006, we start to serve at-riskchildren and youths with music therapy. TheChildren’s Alliance of Hawaii, Inc. sponsorsthe service through their programs for sexuallyabused children and youths. It is known thatmusic therapy can well respond to emotionalneeds of people with abuse history and helpimprove their self-image. We are very excitedabout this opportunity to work with otherdisciplinary professionals for the best of thosechildren and youths in Hawaii.
Our public education activities also haveresulted in increased music therapy referrals.Today, Sounding Joy Music Therapy, Inc. hasabout 100 people with special needs on ourwaiting list, who still seek finding sources fortheir service. More than ever, it truly is time forus to find more financial assistance to enablethem to receive music therapy services. Forthis, we are anticipating to benefit from the fulleffect of our Medicare status to kick in.Another funding source for children withdisabilities also has just been introduced to us.That is Persons In Need (PIN) Program,administered by Learning DisabilitiesAssociation of Hawaii (LDAH). One of the primary missions of SoundingJoy Music Therapy, Inc. is to improvepeople’s accessibility to music therapyservices in Hawaii. Slowly but certainly, weare making progress in this goal. SinceJanuary, we have been providing elderlyresidents in Hawaii Kai RetirementCommunity with music therapy andtherapeutic musical activities. Theseservices have been overwhelminglywelcomed by the residents and making adifference in their lives, thanks to the grantsfrom The State Foundation on Cultureand the Arts and a creative leadershipdemonstrated by the retirement communityadministration. For many years, musictherapy has been utilized for the elderlypopulation very successfully nationally andworldwide. Decades long history of musictherapy research has shown the effectivenessof music therapy for this population. And so,we also want to give Hawaii’s seniors achance to experience the power of musictherapy.
