Our next “Sounds of Joy”, now called “Joy of Sounds – Sounds of Joy”, is scheduled on Monday & Tuesday, April 10 & April 11, 2006. It is co-hosted by our organization and Pacific Music Foundation, presenting a special guest from Germany. Dr. Reiner Haus, Ph.D., an accredited music therapist and a researcher in music therapy and special education will give 3 free presentations at UH Manoa, at Kapiolani Community College and at Mission Memorial Auditorium in downtown Honolulu. The topics include music therapy with children developmentally delayed, multiply handicapped, hearing impaired and CI and prematurely born, and music’s impact on physiological and psychological health. Live music and dance will also be provided for your relaxation and enjoyment. A suggested, freewill donation to the event, $20 general / $10 students & seniors will be appreciated. The Children’s Alliance of Hawaii, Inc. sponsors the service through their programs for sexually abused children and youths. It is known that music therapy can well respond to emotional needs of people with abuse history and help improve their self-image. We are very excited about this opportunity to work with other disciplinary professionals for the best of those children and youths in Hawaii. Our public education activities also have resulted in increased music therapy referrals. Today, Sounding Joy Music Therapy, Inc. has about 100 people with special needs on our waiting list, who still seek finding sources for their service. More than ever, it truly is time for us to find more financial assistance to enable them to receive music therapy services. For this, we are anticipating to benefit from the full effect of our Medicare status to kick in. Another funding source for children with disabilities also has just been introduced to us. That is Persons In Need (PIN) Program, administered by Learning Disabilities Association of Hawaii (LDAH). You may also contact our office for assistance. One of the primary missions of Sounding Joy Music Therapy, Inc. is to improve people’s accessibility to music therapy services in Hawaii. Slowly but certainly, we are making progress in this goal. Since January, we have been providing elderly residents in Hawaii Kai Retirement Community with music therapy and therapeutic musical activities. These services have been overwhelmingly welcomed by the residents and making a difference in their lives, thanks to the grants from The State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and a creative leadership demonstrated by the retirement community administration. For many years, music therapy has been utilized for the elderly population very successfully nationally and worldwide. Decades long history of music therapy research has shown the effectiveness of music therapy for this population.
