Putting Sound in the Picture
This compact 3U box has 20 slots which take an array of modules, and allows the unit to be designed to a broadcaster’s exact specifications. Its modular nature enables our customers to design and build a network around their specific needs, resulting in a mix of audio interfaces with an extremely high density of connections, saving rack space and cutting costs.
Designedforstudiofloorandoutsidebroadcastapplications,theunithasallaudio(includingSDI)andcontrolconnections(Hydra2links,GPIO,RSRS232)locatedatthefrontoftheunit,withpowercablesconnectedattherear.
Eachofthe21slotsis4HP,or0.8incheswide,withoneslotbeingadedicatedHydra2interfacemodule.Theremaining20slotsareallavailableforotheraudiointerfaces.Thesecardscanbemadeupof:
–Mic/lineinputs –Lineinputs –Lineoutputs –AES3inputs(unbalanced) –AES3outputs(unbalanced) –AES3inputs&outputs(balanced) –DualSDIembedder –DualSDIde-embedder
Cardtypescanbefreelymixed,andasthisisCalrec,bothprimaryandsecondaryHydra2linksareprovidedasstandard.Inaddition,twoPSUmodulesprovideredundantpower,and
PSUmodulescanbehot-swappedwithoutinterruptiontooperation…ascananyoftheinterfacecards.
SDIembeddersandde-embedderssupportSD,HDand3GSDIstreamsandareabletodecodeallfourgroups(16channels)andlater,aswellasde-embedding32audiochannelsfrom3GSDIasproposedbySMPTE.

TheModularboxjoinsCalrec’swell-establishedrangeof fixedformatboxesontheHydra2network,whichprovidesanenormous8192²synchronousrouterwithmini-GBIC
connectors.Hydra2’srouterisaTDM-typerouter,capableoftrue‘one-to-many’routingandistrulypoint-to-point;anyinputononeroutercanaddressanoutputonanyother.Thisallowsforenormousnetworkswithhighlyflexibletopologiesinvolvingmultiplerouters.

BasedinGermany,Joachimhasworkedinprofessionalaudioforover20years,including15years’experienceinInternationalsales.
WithDiplomasinMicroEconomicsEngineeringandSoundEngineering,JoachimwillbebasedinSouthernGermanyandwillmanageCalrec’sGerman-speakingandMiddleEastdistributornetworks.

Arecord-setting106millionAmericanswatchedSuperBowlXLIV,nottomentionmillionsofinternationalarmchairfansallovertheworld.Tocoveroneoftheworld’smostpopularandbest-knownsportingevents,NEPBroadcastingdeployedfivetrucksatthegameinSouthFlorida,withfull5.1surroundsoundmixedviafiveCalrecAudioconsoles.
“ConsolesfromCalrechavetwomajoradvantages,”saidTerryKulchar,NEPBroadcastingdesignengineer.“First,they’rereliableandwhenyouhave106millionviewers–moreU.S.householdsthananyothertelevisionprogramever–youwouldn’twanttohaveafailure.Second,theyarethepredominantconsoleformobileproduction.Thatmeansyou’dbehardpressedtofindanaudiooperatorwhoisn’tfamiliarwithCalrec.”
Kulchar’sestimationofCalrec’spopularityisbackedupby2010surveyfiguresfromSportsVideoGroup,whichrevealedthecompanynowhas65percentoftheHDmobileproductionmarketintheUnitedStates,anincreaseonlastyear’sfigure.

ForthemusicalportionoftheSuperBowlcoverage,NEPBroadcastingreliedona1999vintageCalrecQ2analogdeskthathasenjoyedastoriedcareerincludingmultipleAcademyAwardbroadcasts,theAmericanIdolfinale,andothertop-tierentertainmentshows.Beyondhalftime,thesoundsoftheSuperBowlwerebroughttoyoubyAlphawithBluefindigitalconsoles.
Infact,fromanaudiostandpoint,thegamewasnotthetoughestpart.Morechallengingwasthelengthypre-gamebroadcastwithaudiocomingfromeverywhichway,includingtailgateparties,announcersonaremotefootballfield,andmultiplestudiosets.Thentherewerethereplays,eachofthemwithanassociatedsoundthathadtobe

RelyingontheirMADIcapability,theAlphaconsolesmadeitpossibletoroutemultiplesignalsfromoneconsoletoanotherwithouteachsourcehavingtoberepresentedonthecontrolsurface.Instead,thesystem’sdigitalarchitecturedidtheheavylifting.AnotherMADIadvantageisthatitreliesonasinglecoaxcable,whichgreatlysimplifiesset-up,savinghoursoflaborandsupportingtrouble-freebroadcast.
Kulcharhimselfloggedmorethan50manhourspreparingforandbroadcastingtheSuperBowl.OnSundaynight,alongwithsome200colleaguesonthetechnicalside,hecelebratedsuccesswithaglassofchampagne.OnMonday,hewasbackatworkbrightandearly,helpingtotakethewholethingapart.

Highlyscalable,Hydra2’srouterisaTDM-typerouter,capableof‘one-to-many’routingandtrulypoint-to-point.Thisallowsforenormousnetworkswithhighlyflexibletopologiesinvolvingmultiplerouters,inputs/outputs,controlroomsandstudios.Andwithadaptive,intelligentsoftwarewhichautomaticallyrecognizeschangestothenetworkandupdatesallitsclients,it’salsoaverysocialnetwork.

TheApolloalsohasupto78minutesofassignabledelay,whichwillbeofvaluetoSkyduringitslive3Dbroadcasts.Processing3Dvideoaddsasignificantamountofdelayintothechain.Eachstereocamerarigiseitherasidebysideorbeamsplitter/mirrorrig,andtheproductionteamwilluseaStereoImageProcesser(SIP)controllertosetthedepthofimage.
Skyisalsolookingatusingmorediscreteembeddedaudio,usingall16oftheSDIchannels.Thisenablesthebroadcastertoutilizemultichannelaudiomoreeffectively.
WithacommitmenttolaunchingSky3DtoitscommercialcustomersinApril,andthentoallresidentialSky+HDcustomerslaterintheyear,theSky3DtruckwillbeusedweeklyonSkySportsoutsidebroadcasts,butalsoonothergenresofSkyprogramming.Ithasbeendesignedtoworkon
allgenresacrossSky’soutputproducingboth3Dand2Dprogramming,andSkyhasalreadybeentrialingtestsusingTelegenic’sT5unit,whichhousesaCalrecS2console.
