As the dust settles on the action in Beijing, armchair sports fans can relax after

a summer of non-stop sporting action. From speedway to international soccer,

live tennis from Wimbledon, the World Series, the NFL, PGA Golf, and much

more besides. Home viewers have never had it so good.

More than that, with the rapid uptake of home cinema surround

systems, broadcasters are producing 5.1 content as standard.Without exception, Calrec Audio has been fundamental to the5.1 transmission of all of these events, providing the capabilityand the control to ensure the viewer is part of the action.

The sheer volume of 5.1 sports has been deafening, but theaction in Beijing eclipses it all. NBC Olympics owns the exclusiveUS media rights to the Games and used eight Calrec consolesto provide coverage to an estimated 200 million Americans.

Since 1996 we have gone from an analog-only 2-channelcontribution and distribution audio platform to a fully digital, discreet 5.1 channel platform, says Bob Dixon, NBC s projectmanager for Sound Design at the Olympics.

Calrec consoles give NBC Olympics the ability to address all six

channels at once, or easily provide independent control of eachchannel. Calrec provides the kind of quick flexibility an operatormixing a live event in Surround needs.

Calrec helped many other broadcasters meet their surroundobjectives across the globe this year. Amongst others, Calrecconsoles have mixed 5.1 feeds from tennis, speedway, car racing, baseball, football, soccer and golf, and provided the world feedfor the UEFA Champions League Cup final as well as feedsfrom Euro 2008.

In the US, every Major League NFL game in the US is producedby one of Calrecs customers, and there are more Calrecconsoles in HD remote trucks in the US than from any othermanufacturer in fact, almost half of all HD trucks in thatterritory use Calrec boards.

Earlier this year Calrec helped make history by delivering theaudio for the first NFL league game to be played in the UK.NFL host broadcasters Fox Sports teamed up with CTVs flagshipOB9 HD truck to broadcast the New York Giants vs. MiamiDolphins in front of a sell-out 90,000 strong Wembley crowd.

Fox Sports Network and the NFL treated this league matchas they would a match played in the USA and so there wasno compromise in the way the operation unfolded, saysCTVs International Business Director Bill Morris. This was

an enormously important game for the NFL, the first time aleague game had been played on these shores. It was a greatsuccess and I feel sure it will pave the way for NFL leaguegames to be played in Europe on a regular basis. Yet againCalrec has proved that it is the console against which allothers are judged.

Russia: Calrec Dont Miss a Shot

    in Moscow

Thanks to Calrec, more than 300 millionpeople heard the final whistle and allthe other action when ManchesterUnited defeated Chelsea in the UEFA

(Union of European Football Associations)Champions League Cup soccer finalthis summer. An Alpha with Bluefinconsole provided every global audiofeed from the match, while two additionalCalrec consoles completed the Britishcoup at the historic Luzhniki Stadiumin Moscow.

The match was the first all-English finalin the contests 52-year history, andUEFA appointed Britains Sky Televisionto handle all production requirements.

Two Visions trucks, HD4 under contractto Sky and HD3 under contract toRussian host broadcasters RTR andNTV, both carried Alpha with Bluefinconsoles. Working on behalf of ITV Sportwas another truck sent by 021Televisionthat used a Calrec 60 fader Sigma withBluefin console. Although ITV Sportbroadcast the game in SD, an HD rackin that truck was used to record thematch for posterity.

Visions built the technical operationscentre (TOC) with its HD3 truck at thecore, said Keith Lane, Skys SportsOperations Manager. As the host, HD3supplied all feeds using a 54 fader Alphaconsole, including the main 5.1 match

mix, stereo match mix, steady cam, andinternational feeds routed via the TOC.The TOC international feed providedevery other broadcaster on-site orotherwise with a clean feed in whichto add local commentary.

Working on his third UEFA Cup Final inas many years, BAFTA award-winningsound designer Robert Edwards mixedthe world feed in HD3. Edwards is atthe forefront of live-to-air 5.1 surroundsound besides mixing UK PremierLeague matches for Sky, he is responsible

for a variety of entertainment shows, andhas mixed live 5.1 soccer audio for theFIFA World Cup.

We used a SoundField mic to capturethe 5.1 crowd bed, and we supplementedthat with other crowd mics. An additional16 mics were placed around thepitch, and I spent all my time chasingthe ball around with the faders! It wasa very comprehensive mix. Of course,5.1 presents very specific problems, especially when you are producingmultiple surround feeds alongsideall the ISO feeds. Calrecs TFT displaysoffer plenty of flexibility, and one canbe sure of what is being sent evenin the most complex setups, said Robert.

The delay issue poses particularchallenges when working in a complexHD show. While the soccer match rarelynecessitated applying much delay to anyone channel, the audio operator requiredquick and easy access to multiple legs.Because delays were introduced in somany places, the amount of delay builtinto the Calrec consoles as well as theirflexibility proved crucial to audio successfor the match.

    USA: Calrec Races Ahead

Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS)Productions is using a 64 fader Sigmawith Bluefin console to provide 5.1surround-sound mixing in its new HDproduction truck. With the Sigma onboard, the 53-foot expanding trailer hasbeen crisscrossing the United Statesthis summer to cover major auto races,

including the Indianapolis 500.The amount of signal processing that theSigma can accomplish in a small amountof real estate is amazing, but in the mobilebusiness, its also necessary, said DaveGass, Senior Director of Field Operationsand Engineering for IMS Productions.

The Sigma is also the most popularconsole with operators because its sointuitive. There are lots of reasons toappreciate a Calrec console, but to me,its that particular combination that hasearned Calrec its place as the de facto

    standard in the mobile business.

Mixing sound for an auto race is acomplex operation. IMS Productions

delivery of the roar of crowds and enginesat the Indianapolis 500 required some40 microphones and three submixconsoles pit, effects, and radio not to mention multiple music playbackdevices for a grand total of 128 sources. The Sigma manages that load easilyand even affords the productioncompany room to grow.

When the racing season concludes inthe Fall, the truck will be pressed intoservice for Indiana Pacers basketballas well as Purdue and IndianaUniversity football.

    Canada: Global Television

    Selects Calrec Consoles as

    Part of Systemwide Upgrade

Global Television network in Canadahas installed three Hydra audionetworking systems and six Omegawith Bluefin consoles as part of majortechnology upgrades at Globalsregional facilities in Toronto, Vancouver,

Edmonton and Calgary. The reorganization of news production isgiving us the opportunity to replace legacyequipment with the best state-of-the-artequipment available, said Eric Heidendahl,Global Director of Engineering. And inaudio, Calrec is simply outstanding.

As Global began the tender process fornew audio equipment, Calrecs equipmentstood out for flexibility, rigidity, andease of use. In addition, Global wantedto use the same consoles in its outside

broadcast trucks and its studios. Usingthe Hydra network, Global is able toconnect audio consoles in the Torontoand Vancouver facilities to several controlrooms, thus simplifying infrastructureand eliminating duplication of equipment.

Hydra has been successfully adaptedworldwide to meet a variety of needs, fromsimplifying installation projects to creatingmultiple-console/multiple-studio systemsthat can cater to any eventuality, saidJohn Gluck, Calrec Sales and Marketing

Director. The Hydra network and Sigmaconsoles meet Globals strict requirementsand should streamline the networksbroadcast infrastructure for many yearsto come.

Global, which reaches more than 90percent of Canadian English-speakinghouseholds, is Canadas second-largestbroadcaster.
