THE BRIEF Part 1 It is vital to have an understanding of the all the different areas and roles in the industry you are planning to work in, and how they relate to each other. During a series of sessions and through independent research we will look at how different areas of the music business work and the impact it can have on you as musicians. Through our sessions and independent study you will learn about the 4 main areas of the industry (live performance, record companies, Music publishing and artist management) and then produce an article, podcast or video documentary on how they work (GC1 PMD available). In order to achieve higher marks you should explain how the areas function and weigh up the strengths and weaknesses of each area. The Music Publishing section should include an analysis of the importance of royalties and licensing in the music industry (GC5 PMD available) You should then choose an area that interests you and prepare a presentation on the different roles associated with that area and the contracts involved. (GC 2&3 PMD available) To achieve higher marks in GC 2 you need to go into detail about the role and how it can exist in different settings, compare it with other roles and weigh up the advantages and disadvantages. To achieve higher marks in GC 3 you need to go into explain the contracts, compare fair and unfair contracts and weigh up the strengths and weaknesses. Part 2 You have been asked to write a business proposal or presentation for a company of your own choice that meets the needs of a service or product. (record company, Promotion Company, plectrum manufacturer). Your plan should be well thought out and include market research and a clear target market. (GC4 PMD available) Use the Tag Unit 39 on your tumblr
