That is not our business and, in fact, it is nobody’s business. What we are asked to do is to love, and this love itself will render both ourselves and our neighbors worthy.” The UU Principle of honoring the worth and dignity of all is closely tied with our understanding of universal love. The love we talk about isn’t sentimental or emotional, but is more to do with our commitment to the relationship we have with one another. Being part of UUCSR entails making a promise, a covenant, to be part of this faith community. This means a commitment to being in relationship with the institution of UUCSR and also being in relationship with the individuals who make up the membership. It usually sounds easy when we agree to belong to this community. There are many activities and programs here, people are friendly and inviting, so of course we want to be part of this vibrant place. But eventually each of us will find someone here that may appear scary to us, someone who may annoy us, or someone who is very different from us. This is when our belief in our principles, and our commitment to the whole congregation, are put to the test. After all, it is easy to honor someone when we are comfortable with them, but much harder to see their dignity and value when they challenge us in some way. The UU faith is not easy, and in fact few of us can remember seven principles, let alone live according to them! But what we do is this: we come back together each week to remind ourselves of what we are about. Rev. Victoria Safford writes: “We respond every day in ways that are bold and ways that are skittish or selfish, ways radiantly healthy and ways tragic, dangerous, and flawed.” She goes on to say that our faith tradition exists to help us remember how we want to be, and we come back here again and again so we can be reminded again of what is of real value… each other. VEATCH NEWSJoan Minieri, Executive Director Unitarian Universalist Veatch Program at Shelter Rock,

    WE RESIST, WE RISE

On Sunday, January 28, we invite you to join us for Veatch Sunday and the Veatch Board of Governors Annual Meeting. Between now and then, you will receive a copy of the 2017 Veatch Annual Report, entitled, “We Resist: We Rise.” We will explore this theme during the worship service with a sermon of the same title from our featured grantee speaker, Taj James.

Taj James is the founder, Executive Director, and a Board Member of Movement Strategy Center (MSC). Taj launched MSC in 2001, putting forth the question, “How do we weave together the strands of the progressive community into a progressive movement capable of winning lasting policy and social change?” For over a decade, Taj and MSC have served as a consistent source of social change, innovation and leadership.

Following the service and UU Café in the Social Hall, we will open the Veatch Board of Governors Annual Meeting with more inspiring stories from the field about strength and resilience in the face of unprecedented repression.

    We will hear from:

    • Kris Hayashi, Executive Director of the Transgender Law Center. Kris has over 20 years of movement building, leadership and organizing experience. As a public transgender person of color, Kris has been a leader in movements for justice and rights for transgender and gender nonconforming communities for over 13 years. The Transgender Law Center is one of the largest organizations in the country advancing the rights of transgender and gender nonconforming people.

The Unitarian Universalist Veatch Program at Shelter Rock provides support for efforts within the religious and spiritual mission of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock where their purposes are best served by outside agencies acting under the Veatch Program and the Congregation.

    • Maria Rodriguez, Executive Director of the Florida Immigration Coalition (FLIC). Maria has worked to defend basic human rights of low-income and migrant peoples for 25 years. She is a graduate of Georgetown University, where she was active in the anti-apartheid and Central America solidarity movements. Maria worked as an organizer in Virginia where she led a campaign to create a housing cooperative. She has worked to defend public health care coverage and promoted the growth of award-winning free clinics: La Clinica del Pueblo in Washington, D.C. and Good News Care Center in Florida. Maria founded FLIC in 2005 and is the mother of Dante.

    • Christine Neumann-Ortiz, Executive Director of Voces de la Frontera. Christine is recognized as a national leader in immigration reform, serving on the boards of a national coalition of the Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FAIR) and featured in national interviews on National Public Radio and CNN. She serves on the board of the Wisconsin Legalization Coalition (representing 44 allied organizations in the State), Wisconsin Citizen Action and Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice. She is the founding Executive Director of Voces de la Frontera, a low-wage and immigrant workers’ center with chapters in Milwaukee and Racine, Wisconsin, including a student chapter called Students United for Immigrant Rights, with members from three high schools.

Following the conversation with our grantees, you are invited to join the Board of Governors to continue the discussion of our work over the past year and in the year ahead.

Be sure to join us at the January 21, 2018 congregational meeting! At that meeting, the top ten categories from the dot boards will be narrowed down to four.

We plan to make one regular large grant of $100,000 in each of the four areas that the congregation selects.

LARGE GRANTSEileen Jamison, Large Grants Program Officer

The Large Grants Program of the Unitarian Universalist Veatch Program at Shelter Rock provides support for efforts within the religious and spiritual mission of the congregation where their purposes are best served by outside agencies acting under the Large Grants Program and the Congregation.

Large Grants will NOT be the first agenda item on the Congregational Meeting agenda. Please plan to stay until the end of voting on Large Grants to maintain a quorum. Thank you.

As we continue to explore our ministry theme of “Worth and Dignity,” let us lift up the need to be mindful of those around us, of all faiths, who are suffering from intolerance, discrimination and abuse. We are called by our Unitarian Universalist faith to stand against the current increase in anti-Semitism. The Anti-Defamation League reported 1,299 anti-Semitic incidents across the US between January 1 to September 30, 2017, up from 779 in the same period in 2016. This is a 67 percent

increase in physical assaults, vandalism, and attacks on Jewish institutions. Incidents in K-12 schools in 2017 more than doubled and on college campuses, the increase in anti-Semitic incidents rose 59 percent. And alarmingly for our community, the largest number of incidents were in the states with the largest Jewish populations: New York, California, Florida, and Pennsylvania. New York State had the highest number of incidents with 267 – with 8 of these incidents being physical assaults. Our congregation resists white nationalism and anti-Semitism with religious education, worship, pastoral care and social justice which promotes peace, fellowship, and pluralism. Let us redouble our efforts in this New Year.

“What does it mean to be spiritual?”

William R. Murry’s “Reason and Reverence: Religious Humanism for the 21st Century” helps us to understand both the question and the answers.

Our Betty Gold offers her insightful review of the book (available in the UUCSR Bookstore):

Unitarian minister William R. Murry is the former president and academic dean of Meadville Lombard Theological School.

His recent book is a humanist manifesto for the 21st century. In his words, “To be religious does not require that one accept the existence of a supernatural being. To be religious is a matter of one’s attitude toward all of life.”

The message of this small volume can engender long discussions and will be a valuable addition to your own religious thinking. No matter where or who you are, Murry will challenge your own philosophy and help it grow.

Each chapter is filled with wisdom, humor and humanism. After a short chapter about the history of humanism, he is not afraid to deal with the question, “What does it mean to be spiritual?” He finds the responsible search for truth to be a balance between intelligence and emotions.

Murry sees religious humanism as a religion for the future—we can prepare for it and this book will help lay the foundation.

  • COMMON READ - CENTERING: NAVIGATING RACE,AUTHENTICITY, AND POWER IN MINISTRY

    January 9, 2018 5

Members of the UUCSR Choir entertained a the Interfaith Nutrition Network (INN) at Glen Cove.

Once again, the members and friends of Shelter Rock were most generous providing almost 400 meals for the families of the North Shore INN at Glen Cove and the Aids Center of Queens County. Whole roasting chickens were delivered to both facilities on December 21, 2017 ,and distributed that day. In addition, twelve members of the Shelter Rock Choir entertained the Glen Cove Soup Kitchen Guests with holiday songs and carols during lunch after our food delivery.

Estelle Moore, President of the INN at Glen Cove, sent the following: “Richard … Thank you so much. Richard, you added so much Holiday Spirit to our soup kitchen on the Thursday before Christmas. It was a joy to see our guests singing. They could not thank me enough; however, the thank you belongs to you and the Unitarian Universalists. They [the INN guests] appreciated the chickens and I have been getting reports that they were delicious - the best they have ever cooked. Stay warm and know how much we love you. Sincerely, Estelle”

Again, thank you Shelter Rock for making this a memorable holiday for so many needy families.

Update on the Work of the Social Justice Committee

Social Justice is at the core of our faith. As Unitarian Universalists, we are called to make a positive difference in our wider communities. According to its charge, “The UUCSR Social Justice Committee, its Subcommittees, Task Forces and Work Groups provide opportunities for members and friends to become informed about and involved in

social, moral, ethical, and economic problems and issues.” (Bylaws 8.5 L)

To carry out this charge, the following groups come under the Social Justice Committee’s umbrella: the Mental Health Subcommittee, LGBTQ Subcommittee, CoUUrage to Defy Hate Task Force, and Climate Justice Task Force.

Like any living and breathing organism, the SJ Committee needs to adapt to changing times. I’d like to share two cases in point: the LGBTQ Subcommittee and the CoUUrage to Defy Hate Task Force.

The LGBTQ Subcommittee was created when it was clear that the UUCSR chapter of Interweave, “a membership organization actively working to end oppression based on sexual orientation and gender identity,” could no longer function. In consultation with the Board of Trustees, the SJ Committee suggested that a subcommittee for LGBTQ issues be formed. In 2014, the BOT approved this action, and the SJ LGBTQ Subcommittee began to function.

However, after the first year there was no chair, and the subcommittee never held meetings on its own. Instead, for the last three years, the SJ Committee has sponsored events on LGBTQ issues.

Now the question arises: should the LGBTQ Subcommittee continue? Before the committee suggests to the BOT that it be dissolved, we want to know if there’s anyone who would be interested in taking a leadership role in the LGBTQ Subcommittee. If you have that interest, please contact Robin Finnan-Jones, Social Justice Chair, or Claire Deroche, Social Justice Coordinator.

The CoUUrage to Defy Hate Task Force was formed in the summer of 2016 to prepare for the premiere of the documentary, Defying the Nazis: The Sharps War. After this premiere, members of the Task Force decided to continue meeting to address the growing climate of hate in the USA, and like the Sharps, to respond to the refugee crisis of our time. With this mission in mind, the Task Force hosted three educational programs on the refugee situation; in collaboration with Catholic Charities, trained eleven refugee resettlement volunteers; helped two refugee families by soliciting gift cards, clothing, and household items from the congregation; sponsored a fundraising concert for Catholic Charities and Church World Service Refugee Resettlement Programs; and hosted an Upstander Training for 26 participants.

At this time, many in the congregation have expressed a need

Together to End Solitary Confinement at 6:30 PM in the Worship Room. Advocates for ending prolonged solitary confinement gather on the 23rd of every month, remembering those who are in segregated confinement 23 hours a day. After a vigil in the worship room, we will go to the art gallery for a conversation with individuals directly affected by solitary confinement, and share responses to the exhibit, “Photo Requests from Solitary.”

    OPPORTUNITIES FOR GIVING

The Social Justice Committee of UUCSR sponsors several ways for members of the congregation to meet the needs of others for food and clothing. Members can participate in monthly cooking for guests of the shelters run by the Interfaith Nutrition Network. Members can donate non-perishable food for our own congregational pantry located in the hall by the side entrance to the main kitchen and for local food pantries. Donations of gently used clothing benefit our own members through a clothing rack next to the congregational pantry, and men, women, and children served by United Veterans Beacon House. Please see the flyer on the table in the main lobby for complete details.

  • MEMBERSHIP MATTERSBen Bortin, Volunteer and Membership Coordinator

I start the year and this column on a personal note. I realize with new immediacy and urgency how fragile and precious human life is. As many of you know, my son died early last month.

A few of you met him; he visited this congregation several times. For me, in various parts of the state and country, I have cherished memories of him too numerous to count, but

particularly in the past three years, when Jonathan and I both lived in Long Island. I regard his life as a 26-year gift.

I feel for others of you who have lost family members. As Helen Keller put it, “We bereaved are not alone; we belong to the largest company in all the world…

”Still in a state of shock and disbelief, I am mindful that in a basic way, the love we give to and receive from one another survives death.”

So I have this request, one which you’ve almost doubtless heard before - for the people you love in your family or among your friends, certainly for a son or daughter or grandchild, offer an extra hug for me.

There will be a celebration of Jonathan Bortin’s life on January 20, 2018, at Community United Methodist Church, 100 Park Ave., Massapequa, at 1:00 PM, and you are cordially welcome.

This experience has also allowed me to know with renewed vividness the value of a caring community such as this one. I’ve mentioned, with Andrea, my thanks in another part of this newsletter. The amount of love and caring from so many of you at UUCSR has been staggering. Our gratitude knows no bounds.

I am all the happier to welcome two more youth members to this congregation… Katie Ralph and Melissa Greco. It is a delight that you’ve linked your spiritual journeys with ours!

Wishing for a year when justice and peace can bloom, and a healthy and happy new year to you all,

    THANK YOU

    8 The Quest

The caring, support, and love from members and staff of this congregation, following the death of my son, Jonathan, have been beyond overwhelming. Andrea and I are deeply grateful for the many cards, calls, flowers, hugs, and gifts that we have received in the last four weeks from so many of you. And certainly a special shout out to the Caring Committee. Our love and our heartfelt thanks for kindness that we will never forget.

    Ben Bortin and Andrea Starr

Thanks to Chris Hilke and Sandra Frank for your valuable suggestions in pre-planning for the Thanksgiving Day event. I am also so grateful to Carla Drezner for your ready advice and catering knowledge which helped make the task more manageable! You were awesome!!

Holiday Gifts by the Caring Committee

This holiday season, the Caring Committee of UUCSR has once again arranged for the delivery of gifts to those who have been identified as frail, ill and/or home bound. The significance of this endeavor was not only the gift giving itself, but the opportunity to demonstrate tenderness and concern for another in need. This kind of care was mutually beneficial. It was not only well appreciated by recipients, it was also personally rewarding for those who made the visits. It was especially wonderful getting to know others on a more personal level and to share some special moments of joy together. These handcrafted items were lovingly crafted by the Caring Hearts and Love and Stitches Quilters. Our committee member, Monica Schlichting graciously coordinated the visitation and distribution of gifts to thirty three members.
