One of the most essental steps s to supply your case officer wth detaled and relevant nformaton.
try not to be concerned about dscussng ntmate or prvate detals regardng the mssng person or ther lfestyle. any nformaton provded to your case officer wll be treated as strctly confidental.
Whle your case officer can gude you through ths process, the followng lst wll provde you wth a useful remnder about the type of nformaton requred.

Workng Wth the meda
polce or tracng organsatons wll often ask meda outlets to prnt or broadcast detals about a mssng person n an effort to obtan valuable nformaton from the publc.
dealng wth the meda for the first tme can be confrontng. handng over chershed photos or other personal tems for publcty purposes can also be an emotonally dfficult decson.
the natonal mssng persons coordnaton centre, wth the australan federal polce, has a webste that famles can request ther case officer to dsplay a photograph and nformaton about ther mssng person.
remember; always consult your case officer before approachng the meda.
the followng gudelnes provde suggestons to help you work n cooperaton wth journalsts, photographers and camera crews.
decdng to make a publc appeal
if you would lke to nvolve the meda, the first step s to talk to polce or your tracng organsaton.
You should not expect your case officer to mmedately turn to the meda for help unless the mssng person has an urgent medal need or there are grave concerns for ther safety.
What the meda Wll requre
the meda wll need basc nformaton about the mssng person such as ther name, age, a physcal descrpton and ther last known whereabouts.
ths nformaton can be suppled va a press release, usually prepared by polce or a tracng organsaton and dstrbuted to televson, rado and newspapers.

Who Should talk to the meda
You may find you are too overwhelmed wth emoton to answer questons form journalsts about your mssng relatve or frend.
it may be helpful to appont a relatve or close frend to act as a famly spokesperson.
alternatvely, you can ask your case officer to provde someone to bref the meda.
it s often helpful f you have a polce or tracng organsaton representatve wth you f you are beng ntervewed by the meda. they may be able to provde addtonal nformaton or step n f you are unable to contnue.
What You Should tell the meda
if you decde to go ahead wth an ntervew, prepare thoroughly. talk to your case officer about the type of nformaton you should and should not dscuss about the mssng person.
in some stuatons, polce or tracng organsatons may wsh to keep partcular detals out of the publc arena. revealng certan nformaton could nadvertently hnder an nvestgaton.
You may wsh to read a prepared statement and not answer questons rather than be ntervewed.
Wll the meda run Your Story
Once you have provded the meda wth a statement or an ntervew, there s no guarantee they wll run a story.
Your story s one of many news tems that come across an edtor’s or news drector’s desk every day. Sometmes, another story may be consdered more sgnficant.
it s advsable not to argue wth journalsts f they don’t run your story. You may need ther assstance at another tme.

You do not have to nvte the meda nsde your home f you are uncomfortable or prefer to mantan your prvacy.
if you have already provded polce or your tracng organsaton wth photographs, vdeo tapes or any other tems t s best to drect meda representatves to them.
