Sunday 18th

March 2018

Sorry to rain on our parade........

This weekend, we will celebrate the feast of our national patron St. Patrick, but this year

2018 a large black cloud looms over the festivities. Ireland finds itself at a moral

crossroads. We are facing a national decision which will have implications for many

thousands of Irish citizens for many years to come. The decision centres on the 8th

amendment to the Irish Constitution, an amendment which enshrines an equal right to life

of the unborn child and the mother.

Following on a recent decision of the Supreme Court the removal of the 8th

amendment

would in effect remove all protection for the unborn up to the point of birth.

It would hand over to the Dáil the power to introduce the most liberal abortion laws. We

have only to look at the many tails wagging the political Dog in the present Dáil to imagine

the appalling vista that the future could unfold. Many of the most vocal in the cause of

repeal make no secret of their support for abortion on demand, and if the 8th

amendment

were repealed it’s only a matter of time until they lead the charge to achieve that aim; sadly

judging by the present political configuration political expediency will sacrifice any values

in exchange for power. We will end up with abortion laws which go way beyond those of

the UK where over 200,000 children are aborted each year. 20% of pregnancies in the UK

end in abortion. Is that what we want for our country?

In the last referendum the people rejected the proposal to give Oireachtas committees

extensive powers to investigate matters of public interest. What is at stake in the next

referendum is of infinitely greater importance – a matter of life and death, and we must

reject it completely. If we remove the 8th

amendment we are exposing the unborn child in a

manner which is unimaginably at variance with the most basic of Christian values the right

to life. The number of Irish women travelling to Britain for abortions has fallen in the past

few years. Will it represent progress if this number increases dramatically in Irish abortion

mills as a result of the repeal of the 8th

? We must protect the 8th

amendment and cherish

both the mother and the baby, both are precious in the eyes of God.

Esker Active Retirement Association Hi all. This week at our club we had a great

warm-up with our coach Stephen followed by our

walking football. We had great craic playing.

Tom McDonald was in winning mode today and

scored three fantastic goals. Our new goalie Sean

did a great job and made some fab saves.

It was lovely to relax with tea/coffee and biscuits

afterwards and catch-up with everyone. Good to

see some of our members back who have been ill

these last few weeks. We followed on with

scrabble and whist and of course, our indoor

bowling.

Next Monday 19th

March, we are off to

Ennistymon, Co Clare for a few days to recharge

our batteries so we’re all looking forward to that.

Coach pickup is at Woodies at 10:15am and next

Transport Users Lucan bus users are

experiencing long delays on the Quays at morning

peak. This is set to become permanent if Dublin

city planners have their way by diverting almost

all Dame St. buses on to the Quays to facilitate a

Civic Plaza at College Green. This extra one

thousand bus journey per day onto the Quays will

choke the existing scarce road space. The big

losers with this change will be people with a

disability. This can be avoided if they allow a

single bus lane of just one hundred yards on the

south side of College Green. This short bus lane

would only take three metres in width, such a

small amount of space. This lane would benefit

all of Dublin and it would reduce the space in the

Plaza by just 5%. It would be a great benefit to

the Plaza as it would take more people to this

area. See this option on www.acratu.com and

click on news. The city can't afford any more

mistakes like this. They want this bus lane space

for a new row of trees. The city already has half a

million trees between the two canals.

Coláiste Phádraig CBS Tráth na gCeist: The Feachtas Tráth na gCeist

National Final was held in Dublin on Tuesday

13th

March. The competition saw 26 regional

qualifying teams from around the country

compete for the coveted Micheál MacGréil

Perpetual Trophy.

Our team consisted of two 6th

yrs, Calvin Davis

and Dáire Byrne, as well as two 3rd

yrs, Ciarán Ó

Brien and Leo Finan. A score of 9/10 in the 1st

round represented a good start (Tús maith leath

na h-oibre!). Another 9/10 in the second round

saw them among the leaders and a perfect 10/10

in Round 3 saw them climb to the top of the

leader board. By the start of the final round (6)

they were four clear which meant that a score of

7/10 in the music round would be enough to claim

the prestigious title. Ciarán and Leo both have a

keen interest in music so even though the

questions were challenging, our team scored 8/10

to finish with a total of 54/60, four points clear of

the second placed school. The team were

presented with the beautiful trophy as well as

cheques for 150euro each. For Dáire and Calvin,

this was their third success in this competition

having claimed the trophy previously in 2015 and

2017 so a special congratulations to them. No

other school in the country has won this

competition more than once. Comhghairdeas leo

go léir. Gaisce stairiúil don scoil.

TY Fashion Show: The annual TY Fashion

Show was held at the Spa Hotel in Lucan on

Wednesday 13th

March and the show drew a large

crowd, everyone keen to get in tune with the latest

fashion trends! The event was organised and

operated by the Transition Year students

themselves. DJ Mono oversaw proceedings from

the decks while Mr. Todd and Mr. O’ Neill were

joint-hosts and both did a wonderful job of

putting the models at their ease as well as

entertaining the crowd.

The students from CBS were joined on the

catwalk by a number of their teachers and also by

a contingent from St. Joseph’s College Lucan.

The night was an outstanding success, raising

Ms. M. Ryan in particular who were hugely

involved in the whole process while the Coláiste

Phádraig Parents Association kindly supplied the

spot prizes, arranged the ads for the brochure and

helped on the night as well. Many thanks also to

the staff of The Spa Hotel who once again went

above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that

everything went off without a hitch.

Football: Congratulations to our senior

footballers who qualified for the Dublin League

Final on Monday after defeating Skerries CS 3-17

to 2-19. Centre back Dáire Newcombe knocked

over 3 important points for Lucan while Luke

Walsh contributed a further 1-3. Henry Keogh

excelled in the Lucan goal with a series of point

blank saves while corner back Cathal Shanahan

marshalled the defence with aggression and

intelligence. With the game level in the dying

seconds of the game, Emmet Allen, who had

already scored 1-6, knocked over the winning

point from a 45 yrd free to seal a dramatic win for

the team. They now face St. Joseph’s Rush in the

Final this Friday in Abbotstown with the winners

advancing directly to the Leinster Final.

Awards: Well done to 6th yr Thomas Heffernan

who won the Mark O’ Neill Student of the Month

Award for Feb in recognition of his excellent

work as a prefect well as his good manners and

positivity. Congratulations also to 3rd

crossed he might just win this prestigious award!

The nomination is well deserved too.

Lucan CC U13 Boys Soccer final heartache

Last Thursday Lucan Cc’s first year boys soccer

team played against Coolmine Community

School in the West Dublin Final. Lucan CC

opened the scoring 25 minutes into the contest.

However, Coolmine found their rhythm in the

second half and scored twice in 20 minutes. Time

went against Lucan and Coolmines were crowned

West Dublin champs on a score line of 3-1.

It was a terrific performance by the team and

despite the result everyone should be very proud

of not just reaching the final but by their

performance on the day. A huge thanks must go

to managers Mr. Upton and Mr.Spillane for all

their time and effort in coaching the team.

Lucan CC seal thrilling quarter final win in

Kilkenny: Lucan CC emerged 4-3 victors in a

Leinster cup quarter final that had all the elements

of an epic Hollywood sporting drama. In a game

that saw a man sent off, a converted penalty, a

saved penalty, a red card, rattled woodwork and

wonder goals the lads from Lucan CC showed

immense heart and determination to emerge

victorious. A Leinster Senior semi-final awaits for

a super talented team. Huge congratulations must

go to Mr O’Gorman and Mr Duffy for their work

with the Senior Boys team.

St Joseph’s College A huge thank you…. to David Stanley at

Roadstar Paving who came to our rescue after

Storm Emma and cleared our school entrances

and yards on Sunday, 4th

March in no time at all!

All at St. Joseph’s really appreciated David’s

efforts and not a cent was charged for doing it!

John Lonergan Talk: We are delighted to have

John Lonergan visit St. Joseph’s College on

Thursday, 12th

April at 7.30pm to give a talk on

the topic of parenting. All are welcome to attend.

Ceist Conference: The annual Ceist Conference

took place on Tuesday, 13th

April. This is where

principals, students and teachers from different

Ceist schools are able to meet and share ideas.

Many thanks to Clare Keleghan, Katie Henry and

Ciara Whelan, (representatives from The Gluais

team and the Student Council) who had the

opportunity to attend with teacher Ms. Sonya

Lyons and meet with other students to discuss

leadership. It was a great learning experience for

the girls and they really enjoyed learning new

things to implement into our school life.

Flag Day: On Friday, 16th

March, all students and

staff of St. Joseph’s will be celebrating Flag day,

marking the 170th

anniversary of the first raising

of the Irish Flag in 1848. Acts of active

citizenship to honour the Irish Flag this week

involved students supporting a charity of the

school’s choice by voting for the charity and

buying a badge to raise funds for that charity.

Students are reflecting on ‘what life is like today

under the Irish Flag 170 years on from the first

time it was raised by Thomas F. Meagher’. Many

important messages of pride in and respect for the

flag have been posted on the Flag Day display.

Student Enterprise Awards: The Student

Enterprise Awards regional final took place on

Friday 9th of March. Congratulations to our

businesses E-Rays, Speak Out, The GAALS,

Simple Studies and Speak Up – Speak out. The

GAALS won an award for ‘Best Social Media

Prize’ award, and E-Rays came in second overall

in the Senior section. Overall the girls praised the

day to the highest degree and were very proud of

their achievements and hard work. Well done!

Concern Debaters Hard luck to our wonderful

Senior Debating Team who were narrowly

defeated in their last debate in Belfast. The

motion was, ‘To help the Robin Hood, tax must

be implemented globally’. The team of Aoife

Flood, Gabrielle Fullam, Maisie Flynn and Eve

Smyth have been exceptional students for their

effort, research, dedication and skill, not to

mention while being in 6th

Year and preparing for

all aspects of the Leaving Cert. Many thanks to

Mr. Michael Smyth for his unending support and

all the students who helped and supported the

girls along their debating journey this year.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day: I would like to

take this opportunity to wish you all a very Happy

St. Patrick’s Day. Lucan Parade kicks off this

year at 3pm. Well done to all involved and I wish

you the very Best!

Lucan Bus Routes realigned: I have recently

called on the Minister for Transport and the NTA

to not realign any more bus routes in the Lucan

area. All 25 bus services have seen changes on

account of Dublin City Centre traffic congestion.

It is apparent that Dublin Bus has done its fair

share of realignment in order to make changes

towards alleviating traffic congestion in the City

Centre. Much more is needed to be done in other

transport areas to ensure minimum further

changes are required from Dublin Bus and

therefore not negatively impacting Dublin Bus

Passengers who have no alternative transport

option.

Extra places on teacher training courses: I am

pleased there will be an expansion of the number

of places on post primary teacher education

courses as well as additional places in the priority

areas of STEM, Irish and Foreign Languages.

Some concerns have been raised with me by local

principals regarding teacher supply and I have

consistently raised these with the Minister. Some

measures have previously been announced to

support schools in managing these issues;

including expanding the number of days a teacher

can work while on a career break. The Minister is

taking further action by expanding the number of

places on teacher education programmes with a

heavy emphasis on certain subject areas at post

primary level, to ensure that schools can get the

right mix of subject teachers.

Have your say €300k: I attended the first

information meetings for “Have Your Say”

2018/19 in Clondalkin this week. Meanwhile,

gradual progress is being made on the chosen

projects for Lucan (following on from the

Christmas lights) with the tender for the multi-use

games wall starting shortly and further

examination of structural issues at King John’s

Bridge. I launched the free lending books scheme

at Stewarts in Rosse Court last Wednesday and

these are being rolled out at a number of

locations, including Ballyowen Community

Centre. Next week I will be planting the first of

the fruit trees at a location in Vesey Park. The

Council’s Corporate Services Director has

pointed out that the timescale for implementation

of the projects is a year from the last meeting of

Adamstown to Celbridge Road link: SDCC has

approved planning permission for this important

road link which I have lobbied to progress in

recent years. This road will alleviate pressure on

another route to the N4.

Lucan Community College: As Chairman of

Lucan Community College, I welcome the

approval of fire safety certification for our long-

awaited extension. This project has been seriously

delayed due to the bureaucracy of the school

building approval process. We’ve a long way to

go but I’m glad we’re making progress!

Litter in our parks: Park users have raised

concerns with litter and in particular dog waste in

our parks. I have tabled a motion requesting

council management to examine piloting Dog

litter bins in our parks. Also following my

question raised in relation to Solar Bins being

piloted in the county the following response was

received “Due to procurement requirements

which are currently being addressed, the pilot of

the Solar Bins has not yet commenced”. As the

number of bins within our parks still remains an

issue I will continue to campaign for additional

bins.

Water disruption/quality: Residents have been

in touch with me regarding water disruption and

water quality. I have raised these issues directly

with Irish Water and they will be making further

contact with residents and they have also

committed to investigating these issues further.

U-14 League Division 1

Lucan Sarsfields 6-11, Na Fianna 2-08

The U14A boys played their first home game on

the Juvenile Pitch on a lovely day considering the

weather of late. The football did not disappoint

either. Playing into a stiff breeze towards the

senior pitch, Lucan went into a quick 2 point lead.

With their first real attack Na Fianna won a

penalty in which our goalkeeper and our defender

collided in bravely attempting to prevent a goal

chance. The penalty was dispatched and Na

Fianna took the lead. However this was not to last

long as Lucan came back immediately with a well

worked goal almost immediately from the kick

out. This was the one and only time Na Fianna

led Lucan as the boys pressed home their effort

and desire to win every ball and punish any loose

play from the visitors. Going into the second half

Lucan continued to pile on the pressure and eased

to a well-deserved win 6-11 to 2-08 win.

Our March general meeting

was a lively affair; first we

had an unexpected but very

welcome guest, Frances

Fitzgerald TD. Frances

sought to understand what

our group is about, the

progress we have made to date, and how she

could best assist us in our efforts to obtain our

own shed. Then we welcomed several new people

to our meeting and in revising & reviewing our

actions to date some very positive suggestions

were made -and warmly received. We have

identified some new possibilities and we are

working to obtain more practical support from our

Council -as we are all direct contributors to our

Council via our Property Taxes we believe we are

applicants for Council support, not supplicants for

a charitable hand-out.

The next open, general meeting of Men's Shed

Lucan will be on Monday, 17th April; 6.30 to

7.45pm in Lucan Library (the Library is located

in the SuperValu shopping centre on the

Newcastle Road, close to Starbucks). As usual,

this general meeting offers everybody a chance to

have their say and voice their opinions and/or

suggestions. If you have an idea or suggestion

come and share it with us, all of us. We will also

be reviewing progress on the new options

identified at our March meeting. Looking forward

to a positive and productive meeting

Know Your Rights: Parental Leave Question:

What is parental leave? Can both parents take it? Answer:

Each parent of an eligible child may take up to 18

weeks of unpaid parental leave from work. Leave

can be taken no later than the child’s eighth

birthday. However, if your child has a disability

or a long-term illness, you can take parental leave

up to their 16th birthday. If you adopt a child

between the ages of six and eight, you can take

leave for that child up to two years after the date

of the adoption order. (Your contract of

employment may also provide for an extended

age limit.)

You can take 18 weeks of leave per child in one

continuous period or in two separate blocks of a

minimum of six weeks. If you take it in two

separate blocks, there must be a gap of at least 10

weeks between the two periods of leave per child.

However, if your employer agrees, you can

separate parental leave into periods of days or

even hours.

Taking parental leave does not affect your other

employment rights. Apart from the loss of pay

and pension contributions, your position remains

as if no parental leave had been taken. This

means, for example, that while on parental leave

you will continue to accumulate your annual

leave entitlement. While you are on parental

leave, a public holiday that falls on a day when

you would normally be working is added to your

period of leave.

When you return to work after taking parental

leave, you can ask for a change in your work

pattern or working hours for a set period. Your

employer must consider your request, but is not

obliged to grant it.

Both parents have an equal entitlement to 18

weeks’ parental leave each. Unless you and your

partner work for the same employer, this leave is

non-transferable; you can only claim your own

parental leave entitlement of up to 18 weeks per

child. However, if you both work for the same

employer and your employer agrees, you may

transfer up to 14 weeks of your parental leave

entitlement to each other.
