PREFACE

It is a pleasure to record the assistance which I have receivedfrom friends, colleagues, and institutions during my work onthis book. First thanks are owed to James Diggle, who read eachsection of the commentary as soon it was ready. I finished this book during a year of leave partly funded by myUniversity, partly by the Arts and Humanities Research Coun-cil; the School of Humanities at Nottingham and the BritishAcademy funded two earlier visits to Leiden. The Departmentof Classics at Nottingham allows scholars time for research ineven the busiest of terms.
