July 13, 2020 Sophie B. Wright Community, Our lives have been changed drastically by a nation-wide global pandemic. We have lost family members and a valuable staff member to the COVID pandemic which makes the virus a personal one for many of us. The virus has travelled the globe and cause devastation to many families, schools, businesses and our surrounding communities. But, we are resilient, and we are able to witness this greatness in our community in many ways. Essential Workers in our communities have allowed us to continue to exist, heal and maintain. I want to thank all of the essential workers who continued to show up every day to clean our building, feed the community and plan our restart. Our fears are not different from any other person’s, but we must press on and move forward for our community and our students. Thank you to all the staff members who continued to teach our students through the pandemic. We created a great virtual learning environment for our students which allowed the students to stay connected to us. We visited all of our Senior Students and held a “social distancing “ Graduation in front of the school. WE ARE WARRIORS!!! As we prepare for the new school year, we must also grapple with many uncertainties. We ask that everyone continue to be patient and flexible. We must commit to educating our students and attempting to meet the needs of our learning community. We will continue to modify our plans and practices as we receive federal, state and city updates and guidelines. Let’s use this time to learn new teaching strategies that allow us to grow in the process. I look forward to welcoming the staff back on campus in July (support staff) and August (teaching staff) and the students in August. I am excited and confident that is we continue to work as a team, we will be okay and work through any challenge presented to us. INTRODUCTION The Institute for Academic Excellence which operates Sophie B. Wright High School has created this state directed - phase dependent plan to aid in navigating the re-establishment of our schools where employees, students, and families feel safe upon returning and to reduce the impact of COVID-19 conditions. The guidelines referenced in this plan are based on guidance from the Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and World Health Organization (WHO) and New Orleans Public Schools. Regular updates will be made to this plan based on information provided to us by the LDOE, CDC, WHO, and applicable federal, state, and local agencies.

KEY PROTOCOL AND INFORMATION • Social Distancing will remain in effect for all building occupants and learning spaces.

Student desks will be spaced apart for all school activities and students will be assigned seats and instructional materials.

• Students will be given 2 reusable masks per semester. Students must wear masks at all times. Students will not be allowed to exchange masks or use other student’s masks.

• Students will only be allowed to board the school bus with an ID and a face mask. Students who lose either item can purchase a daily mask for .25 or a replacement ID for $2.00.

• Students may provide their own mask and they can also wear a face shield in addition to a mask. Student provided masks must be appropriate and cannot have any writing or symbols on them. Students cannot use bandanna type masks or gang-related masks.

• Students and staff are encouraged to keep a personal size bottle of hand sanitizer on their person while inside the school building at all times.

• All personnel will be given 2 reusable masks per semester. School personnel must wear masks at all times.

• Temperatures will be taken within the first 30 minutes of 1st period class for all students. • School personnel will have temperatures taken upon arrival prior to punching in to work. • Classrooms will be disinfected at the end of each day. Teachers and staff will receive

supplies and will disinfect their respective workplace before and after each use daily. • Students will receive daily in-person instruction in static groups as often as possible.

Sophie B. Wright High School District Operations Before the opening of school, information on the opening of school and appropriate phases will be sent to all employees, students, and parents. The SBW Academic Re-Entry Plan is in full alignment with the Louisiana Department of Education's Strong Start 2020 School Reopening Guidelines as well as the New Orleans Public Schools Roadmap to Reopening Guidelines. Additionally, the individual needs and circumstances of students with disabilities will be addressed. Please see below for a summary of each phase.

Phase Operations

Phase 1 • School operations are limited to virtual learning only • Facilities are closed to the public • All Sophie B. Wright’s employees are classified as essential and

may be required to report to their assigned locations • Staff will report to the school building

Phase 2

Wright will provide distance learning opportunities for all students. This will be done using the Google Classroom and Zoom platforms we used to end the 2019-2020 school year. Students would continue to have access to high quality instruction and would be required to log-in daily, submit graded assignments, and complete test.

Phase 2 Using the Phase 2 LDOE guidelines, our school system would be able to physically accommodate students on campus on any given day. In this phase, we will implement a Hybrid Instructional Model to provide in person instruction to students on alternating days.

• The 9th and 10th Grade Students will attend school on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. • The 11th Grade Students will attend school on Mondays and Wednesdays. • The 12th Grade Students will attend school on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. • Students who are enrolled in the UNO Dual Enrollment, SUNO Early Start Program and

Employee or Student Exposure SBW will be in close contact with the Louisiana Department of Health and the School District. The Louisiana Department of Education will give guidance for all incidents related to employee and student exposure to COVID-19 and/or COVID-19 related symptoms. While we all hope to avoid exposure to illness from COVID-19, we need to be prepared for that possibility. If an employee or student, or someone he or she has been in contact with, has been directly exposed to the virus, our first concern is for the health and safety of those who may be at risk for additional exposure.

In this rapidly changing situation, health care providers should have the most up-to-date information from the CDC.

Page 12: Sophie B. Wright High School€¦ · 10/03/2020  · What will hybrid learning (Phase II) consist of at Sophie B. Wright High School? On the days that students attend school, they

Employee exposure protocols may include the following: 1. Self-quarantine in a specific room away from others in the home 2. Contact the following to notify them of potential exposure to COVID-19 and follow their

instructions o The employee’s personal healthcare provider o SBW’s School Director o The HR Director

2. The HR Director will work with School Director to determine appropriate next steps 3. In case of an emergency, the employee should call 911 to notify them of potential

exposure to COVID-19 and follow provided instructions. 4. Before returning to work, employees will be asked to submit a healthcare provider’s note

stating that the employee is cleared to return to work in the school building and has tested negative for COVID-19.

Student exposure protocols may include the following: 1. Self-quarantine may be required 2. Parents should monitor students for symptoms and consider contacting a

healthcare provider. 3. In the case of a student who tests positive for COVID-19, parents are

encouraged to notify the school principal. ● The student can return to school once the student provides proof

that he/she is no longer COVID-19 positive. Social Distancing Social distancing is an effective way to prevent potential infections. SBW’s employees, students, parents, and visitors should practice maintaining a 6 feet distance and eliminating physical contact with others.

● Traffic Flow – Taped lines on the floor will mark the walking direction throughout the office and hallways in order to maintain the social distancing requirement of 6 feet.

● Ad-hoc Interactions or Gatherings – Non-essential or informal meetups and visiting should be avoided.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Employees and Students In order to minimize exposure to COVID-19, PPE may be needed to prevent certain exposures. PPE can include: • Masks: Face masks are an important part of our protection against the spread of COVID-

19, as well as in personal hygiene, social distancing, and enhanced cleaning efforts. As such, masks are mandated for all SBW employee and students.

• Gloves: Wearing gloves does not diminish the need to wash our hands, and whether gloved or not, touching our faces, noses, and eyes is a significant risk to the spread of infection.

Page 13: Sophie B. Wright High School€¦ · 10/03/2020  · What will hybrid learning (Phase II) consist of at Sophie B. Wright High School? On the days that students attend school, they

SBW RETURN TO SCHOOL PLAN

OTHER SCHOOL CONSIDERATIONS Virtual Etiquette & Norms The online classroom is considered as a regular classroom by staff for students. Certain behaviors are expected when communicating with peers and staff members while in online classrooms. The guidelines for online behavior and interactions are termed “Netiquette.” It is important that the learning community follow the Netiquette guidelines when communicating via email, online classroom chats, discussion boards, zoom meetings etc., which are essential aspects of the distance learning experience at Sophie B. Wright High School.

Following school policies and proper conduct in a virtual learning session is just as important as in a face-to-face classroom. The repercussions for failing to act responsible will result in similar consequences as during the school year. A portion of the student’s grade – the participation grade - will be how well the student participates in online discussions and other classroom participation activities.

Staff, students and parents are encouraged to watch and discuss the following short videos: o Netiquette Video 1 o Netiquette Video 2

Online Etiquette o The following is expected when communicating online: o Treat staff members with respect through all engagements and mediums such as virtual

meeting rooms, chats, email, or other online communication. o Use standard English and grammar at all times. o Be respectful of everyone’s time and bandwidth. o Avoid slang terms such as “wassup” and abbreviations such as “u” instead of "you”. o Avoid using the caps lock feature AS IT CAN BE INTERPRETED AS YELLING OR

SCREAMING AT SOMEONE. o Bullying is never acceptable or tolerated. Disciplinary actions will be taken immediately and

accordingly.

Further information on this process will be communicated to families once we receive the mandated “Return to School Form” from the parents.

What will hybrid learning (Phase II) consist of at Sophie B. Wright High School? On the days that students attend school, they should expect a mostly traditional school day. social distancing. o Students will be required to wash their hands or use sanitizer every 2 hours,

including upon arrival, before and after lunch, and at dismissal. o Enhanced cleaning procedures will be in place. o Social distancing practices will be implemented to the greatest possible extent.

Will student attendance be mandatory? Attendance at school will be mandatory this school year. For students who attend in- person, attendance will be recorded normally. For students in a virtual setting, attendance will be recorded through the student on-line participation. Students must follow their daily school schedule and the revised bell schedule. Attendance will be taken every day and recorded in PowerSchool.

How will transportation be provided? In order to reduce the number of students on the bus, parents are encouraged to drive their children to school. In Phase II, bus capacity is limited to 50%. During this phase, only 50% of students will ride the school bus. In Phase III, bus capacity is limited to 75%. Our transportation department is currently adjusting bus routes to accommodate this mandate. Due to these limitations, parents should review bus route times when published, while also understanding that there may be changes.

Will athletics be allowed to resume? Athletic competitions will be allowed to resume with a recommendation put forth by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association. This would most likely occur once we reach Phase III or IV. Click this link for LHSAA Information.

How will the school district communicate with parents? Parents should continue to monitor our website and the school’s Twitter page. We will continue to send school blasts to our parents.
