  • The EMS project will be offered another year. Again this project will have members become CPR Certified, and learn the value and importance of an EMS worker. Also learn how EMS workers serve others in saving lives and property. We are planning another great field trip to the SRJC Public Training Academy where 4-H members volunteer and act out in a scenario to help the newly trained EMTs practice on real people for different emergency techniques when saving lives. This last year was the best time our 4-H members had there, learning what it takes to become an EMT.

This year we are planning to visit a Fire Station and visit Reach helicopter. Come and join the fun on how this project teaches 4-H members early skills if they plan on making a career working as an EMT, Paramedic, Fire

Starting this year, the California 4-H Youth Development program is changing how enrollment in the program is handled. For the past 7 years, we have been using a very outdated system. This year, the system is all new- and it’s online! The program is called 4hOnline, and it is in use in Texas and Florida. The new system allows families to update their enrollment online at any time, and club leaders to view their club’s enrollment and print reports and labels. If you don’t use the internet, that’s okay too- the system is still beneficial! This year, the 4-H Office has decided to switch over to the new system in small steps. So what does this mean for you right now?

    • Because of the change, we cannot reuse our old enrollment forms, so everyone will have to fill out a blank enrollment card this year.

    • Enrollment forms will be due to your club leader by FRIDAY, OCTOBER 17TH. Once the 4-H Office has entered your enrollment, you will receive an email (if you have provided an email address) giving you a password to log into the system, and telling you where you are in the enrollment process. This won’t be until mid/late November. Each month, we will be giving you updates on the changes as 4-H enrollment goes online! If you have questions, please call the 4-H Office.

Are you interested in wild animals? Would you like to learn about how animals interact? Do you have questions about animal behavior, food, habits? Then the Sonoma County Wildlife Project is for you! Last year’s theme was “Backyard Wildlife,” where members learned how humans interact with wildlife to both attract and repel select creatures. The project doesn’t have a theme for next year yet, so we’ll be deciding at the first project meeting. The project meetings are chock-full of fascinating discussions and hands-on activities. There are creative craft projects and delicious snacks at

every meeting. We meet on the fourth Wednesday of every month for the most part, at the 4-H Center in Rohnert Park, from 4:00 to 5:30. We usually have a field trip in November, and the December nature craft meeting is earlier in the month for your convenience. This is an excellent project for primary and older members alike. If you have any questions, please contact the project leader, Mary Engebreth, at (707) 996-2981, or e-mail her at [email protected].

  • This is a comment post on Breeders World from Gail Christian, our lamb judge. For those of us involved with livestock shows and showing, we could all learn a valuable lesson from the Sonoma Co. Fair. It was my pleasure to judge the market lamb and meat goat divisions and showmanship for the 2008 Sonoma Co. Fair, Santa Rosa, Ca. Yes, I found excellent quality livestock at this huge county fair, just as I find at most places that have given me an opportunity to judge (I have judged from Orlando, Florida to Palmer, Alaska the past six years). What set this show apart from a lot of places where I have judged was the support shown to the youth participants. It didn't matter if it was the FFA or 4-H division, as the finger pointed to the class winner, a huge roar and applause went up for the winner and other participants from the winners youth group, advisors, leaders, parents, and spectators. This was the most vocal group of supporters I have ever encountered. I tell you, for this ol' codger, it made my heart pound and the adrenalin flowed...Both youth groups showed in their official uniforms. I have never seen a more impressive clean cut group of young men and women. I did not hear one foul word, and, it was nothing but yes sir and no sir from these young people and this went on for three days. Also, as you go into some of these (especially inner city) neighborhood schools, shopping malls, McDonalds and you see these young men expose themselves with their pants top below the rear end and their underwear showing and these young girls exposing everything and then some) that God blessed them with, many covered with tattoos, lip and body piercings… Be glad that most of our leaders and officials, especially in rural areas, have chosen to maintain and support the 4-H and FFA and the men and women who so dedicate their lives to leading these young people...Sonoma County, and all the other counties that support 4-H and FFA, I take my hat off to you...Thanks for choosing to get involved into something so positive...JMO...Gail Christian

In order to be considered a club in good standing, the following 4 requirements must be met:

    1. Send a club rep to each CCC meeting during the year, to vote, gather information, and share it with your club. It does not have to be the same adult each month. You MUST sign in and stay for the whole meeting.

    2. Club leader attendance at the August Leader Training, held the last (or second to last) Saturday in August each year.

    3. Recruit one adult volunteer to be the ChickenQue rep for the year. This person attends one monthly meeting January through March. Provide the office secretary with contact info for your CQ rep as soon as possible during the year, so that mailings can be sent.

    4. Each member needs to sell 4 ChickenQue tickets in order to raise funds for the 4-H program.

The project is lead by Teen Leader Cynthia Hinde under the guidance of Kelly Hinde. The project is limited to 25 members who will be asked to commit to the project and attend at least 80% of all scheduled project meetings. Members who attend 80% of scheduled project meetings (see below), complete a project record, show their dog at least once at a fair, and do a related presentation at County Presentation Day will receive a project pin. On Memorial Day members of the Independence 4H club delivered potted plants to the Veterans Section of Santa Rosa Memorial Park as a way to thank the veterans and their families for service to our Country. The club decorated the pots, planted red white and blue flowers in them and then placed a hand made thank you card in each pot. We then placed the flowers on the veterans’ graves during

the Memorial Day ceremony at the cemetery. Many of the families of the veterans personally thanked us and took the flowers home to

enjoy. Santa Rosa Memorial Park general manager Laura was very excited about our project and wrote “your project is wonderful and it’s so nice to know that there is someone, and hopefully more, who are instilling pride in our children for the country they live in and for all of those who serve our freedoms”. A lot of people look at Memorial Day as just another day off but we learned the true meaning of the holiday and are proud of our club and all those who served our country.

The deadline for the 4-H Dairy Replacement Heifer Application is NOVEMBER 1, 2008. Please mail application to Pat Groverman, 400 Ormsby Lane, Petaluma, CA 94954. Since 1958 the 4-H Dairy Replacement Heifer Project has been popular. Heifers will be placed from January to April. These heifers will be from one week to two months old (usually three weeks of age). Members enrolled in this project, raise the heifers, show them at fairs, have them bred, and sell them two and one half years later as heavy springers at a special 4-H Dairy Replacement Heifer sale. The process for securing a heifer is: 1. The 4-H member and parents should understand that this is a commitment to a two and one-half year project. The applicant must be currently enrolled in a 4-H Club. 2. Once a decision has been made to apply, the member should fill out the above application and contact the local dairy leader for a recommendation and signature. 3. The dairy leader will make a recommendation to the Replacement Heifer Committee by the application deadline. When making a recommendation, the leader should note interest, dependability, and parental support. These criteria are very important!! In the past, some members have been very negligent in turning in required information, such as vaccination, breeding dates, Bill of Sale, and contact. 4. The Dairy Replacement Heifer Advisory Committee will review all applications and select the members who will receive heifers. 5. Applicants will be notified in December, by mail whether or not they will be receiving a heifer. 6. Only in rare cases do first-year members receive heifers. Primary membership does not apply. 4-H members residing on dairy ranches can apply. 7. Members are not eligible after they are 16 years of age or reached their junior year in high school.
