Ocean WaesWaves
can be unpredictable.
Large waves can sweep
the shoreline even
on days when most o
the sur looks tame.
These large waves
have been the causeo many drownings
over the years and can
catch those close to the
shoreline by surprise,
washing them into the
cold, turbulent water.
Most victims were climbing on rocks and clis,
playing near orin the sur, or shore shing.
Rip CurrentsThese powerul, channeled
watercurrents fow away rom shore. They
typically extend rom the shoreline, through
the sur zone, and past the line o breaking
waves. Rip currents can occur at any beach
with breaking waves.
I you are caught in the seaward rush o
a rip current, do not panic or attempt to
swim directly to the shore against the strong
current. Swim parallel to the shore until you
are out o the rip current, then swim to shoreat an angle away rom the rip current.
The rip current usually dissipates just
beyond the sur line. At this point, you may
swim around the current and back to shore.
In an emergency, dial 911. Remain calm.
Have someone spot the person in trouble
or keep your eyes on the person. Give
your location and stay on the line with the
dispatcher. Do not attempt a water rescue
yoursel; wait or trained proessionals.
