Greetings Sonia Sotomayor Families!
We have had an incredible start to our school year! Students are settling in to their classroom routines and navigating the building like champions!
The State of SD Department of Education recently released their annual report card. Sonia So-tomayor Elementary was once again named an Exemplary School! We share that distinction with 33 of the 663 schools in South Dakota and our very proud of the work of our students and staff. Even though we are in the top 5% of schools in the state, we still have a lot of hard work to do to maintain our status!
Attendance has been and continues to be a main priority for us. Last year our District and school goal was to have every student present at least 94% of the time, which means missing no more than 11 days of school. Unfortunately, we fell short of that goal. We had only 91.28% of our stu-dents who missed less than 11 days of school. We know we can do better! This year we will once again strive for an attendance rate of 94%. In the month of September, we had 392 out of 644 students present every day. We are hoping in October that number is much higher! We under-stand that some absences cannot be avoided, but if there is an opportunity to schedule appoint-ments and vacation outside of the school day or on days when there is not school, that would help immensely!
We have had a lot of fun celebrating Spanish Heritage Month and learning more about the coun-tries from which our interns, teachers, and other staff are from! Please go to our new school web-site to check out the interviews conducted by 5th grade students! https://sotomayor-sfsd.org/
Thank you for all of the many ways you support our students and staff. The outpouring of support for our two teachers who awaited news from their families while Hurricane Maria ravaged their county was amazing. While Sra. Jennifer Castello and Sra. Lymari Robles have heard that all of their family members are safe, their present living conditions are very poor as basic necessities are in short supply. Unfortunately there are not many ways to provide assistance to them at this time due to the inability to get resources to them. Both teachers have asked that we keep their families in our thoughts as they begin to rebuild their lives.
Thank you again for all you do, each and every day!
I am incredibly grateful to be your principal! Tracy Vik
Tracking Student Progress
by Dr. Brian Maher, Superintendent
By now, we hope your students are settling in to a healthy and well-
balanced routine of school, homework, extracurricular activities, and fun. The
months certainly go by quickly and soon enough we will be coming upon the end of
the first semester!
While keeping our sights set on the District’s overall mission “to educate
and prepare each student to succeed in a changing world,” we are also celebrating
significant gains in one of the goals outlined in our Strategic Plan.
Recently, the South Dakota Department of Education released report cards
for each school district in South Dakota based on results from tests taken last spring. In addition to
scores for math and reading proficiency, the report card also measures attendance and high school
graduation rates.
I am pleased to report the District graduation rate increased more than three full percentage
points to 83.85% - up from 80.55% at the same time last year. This improvement is the result of hard
work by classrooms teachers, counselors, social workers, administrators, and support staff who hold
weekly meetings to identify students at-risk of falling behind. Once identified, these students receive
additional support and personal encouragement to stay on track. Because of these efforts, 57 students
from every race, ability, and socioeconomic category recorded by the state, who were at risk of not
graduating with their classmates, received their high school diploma in June.
While we celebrate that improvement, our scores in math and reading are still not at the level
we would like. District third grade reading scores continue to trail slightly the State average; however,
the District growth rate in reading is higher than the State average. In math, the District’s proficiency
level increased nearly two percentage points and outpaced the State math scores. The math growth rate
improved again this year and outpaced the State growth rate more than four percent.
I can assure you teachers study these assessments and others done throughout the year to
determine which skills students have yet to master. Future lessons focus on those skills to eliminate
gaps in understanding.
In the end, test scores and graduation rates give us the “big picture” of student progress, but we
know if students are to be successful, educators must focus on the individual needs of each student.
This important work is going on every day in your child’s school. We are grateful for the support and
encouragement parents/guardians and siblings can provide at home. Together we can meet student
achievement goals in the future.
Congratulations to our Summer Reading Challenge Qualifiers!

Happy Fall from the Library! It’s October and that means there are pumpkins everywhere! Let’s take this harvest theme and bring it into the Sotomayor Library for some reading fun! This is a VOLUNTARY activity, but provides a fun activity and great conversation about books with your students! Here’s how it works: 1. Select a book and read it together. 2. Focus your discussion on the characters in the story.
a. Describe your character. b. What are some things the character did in the story? c. Do you like this character? Why or why not?
3. Pick one character and create them on a small pie size pumpkin. (A small enough pumpkin that the student can carry it.)
4. Decorate it, paint it, glue things to it, and just get creative! (Please don’t carve it though.) 5. Send the pumpkin and book (with a note with the student/ family name) to the Sotomayor
Library on Thursday, October 26th or Friday, October 27th. 6. Pumpkins and books will be on display the week of October 30-November 3rd for all
classes to see! 7. Pumpkins and books will be sent home on Friday, No-
vember 3rd. Enjoy! I can’t wait to see what everyone comes up with! Sincerely, Mrs. Egstad

Dear Parents and Families: Reading for pleasure unlocks the power of information and imagination and helps children discover who they are. Here’s what you can do to help children develop stronger reading skills and a love for reading:
• Set the example. Let children see you read. • Have a collection of books in your home. Update this collection routinely to keep up with
changing tastes and reading skills. • Support our school’s Book Fair. Allow your children to choose their own books to read.
Our Scholastic Book Fair is a reading event that brings the books kids want to read right into our school. It’s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level. Please make plans to visit our Book Fair and be involved in shaping your child’s reading habits.
Book Fair dates: October 17th- 23rd Shopping hours: During School Hours and Conference Times
If you are unable to attend the Fair in person, we invite you to visit our online Book Fair at scholastic.com/fair or send some money to school with your child so that they may shop the book fair and find some wonderful books and treasures. We look forward to seeing you and your family at our Book Fair! Remember, all purchases benefit our school.
