Gulicking-Up Song Biff Fink

When Father he took Mother G . out for a ride,She seemed to like the lake they biked along beside .“A missionary’s life is misery,Let’s found a summer camp,” said he .When from his farm a local yokel cried:

Chorus:Stamp your feet,Clap your hands,If you’re looking for a partner, I’m your man .Are things piling up on you?Just let me help you muddle through, ’Cuz I’m a good-for-something rascal,Yes I am!

Now Mr . Winships (as his name turned out to be) Would part at once with his dear homestead for a fee . And when he asked a certain question,And their answer passed inspection,Mother Gulick called to Winships modestly:

[Chorus]

Those ancient days are long behind us (thankfully), And now our camp has grown from one to two to three, Four, five and six But still when night falls on creation,And there’s peace in the Foundation,You can hear an echo whisper through the trees:

[Chorus — softly]

Tonight we’re singing all together (my, oh, my),For we’re Aloha in the present, you and I .Let’s go one round for love and laughter,In the now and ever after .Let’s lift up our song and shout it to the sky:

[Chorus]

Bum Diddley Oh Barnes Boffey

Bum diddley oh, hey hi ho, hey hi ho, hey —This is another quite wonderful day .Sunshine is flooding the earth and — oh, boyIt lights up beauty for all to enjoy . Hear chanticleer “cock-a-doodling” on,Telling the nighttime it’s time to be gone .Forget your yesterdays, live what is now —Isn’t life wonderful, golly, and how!I can’t express it so I’ve got to sayBum diddley oh hey hi ho hey hi ho hey —Bum diddley oh hey hi ho hey .

Bum diddley oh, hey hi ho, hey hi ho, hey —Lead every hour in a joyous new way;Don’t take on life with a feeling of gloom —Let it take wings, stand aside, give it room .Throw out your arms and then fling out your chest,Bust all the buttons on that tight old vest .You’ll just get ulcers if worry’s your mate,Follow your dream, and please don’t break the date .Give it a try and you’ll find it will pay —Bum diddley oh hey hi ho hey hi ho hey —Bum diddley oh hey hi ho hey .

Bum diddley oh, hey hi oh, hey hi oh, hey .English shout “Pip, Pip!” the Spanish “Olé!”Hippies say “Know your bag, do your own thing” —Joy is the monarch, so “Long Live the King!” —Russians say “Tovarisch,” “Vikings say “Skol!”Irish say “Brravo” with that Irish roll .“Viva” or “Bene” or just “Down the hatch!”If you’re no linguist, then here is the catch,All of the world will respond if you say,Bum diddley oh hey hi ho hey hi ho hey —Bum diddley oh hey hi ho hey!

Charlie and the MTA

Let me tell you a story ’bout a man named Charlie .On a tragic and fateful day .He put ten cents in his pocket, kissed his wife and family,Went to ride on the MTA .

Chorus:Well, did he ever return? No, he never returned,And his fate is still unlearned (poor Charlie)He may ride forever ’neath the streets of Boston He’s the man who never returned .

Charlie handed in his dime at the Kendall Square stationAnd he changed for Jamaica Plain .When he got there the conductor told him,“One more nickel!”Charlie couldn’t get off that train .

[Chorus]

Well, all day long Charlie rides through the station crying,“What will become of me?How can I afford to see my sister in Chelsea,Or my cousin in Roxbury?”

[Chorus]

Charlie’s wife goes down to the Scollay Square stationEvery day at a quarter past two .And through the open windowshe hands Charlie his sandwichAs the train goes rumbling through .

[Chorus]

All you citizens of Boston don’t you think it’s a scandalHow the people have to pay and pay?Fight the fare increase, vote for George O’Brien,And get Charlie off the MTA!

[Chorus]

Helen Shaw’s Song Biff Fink

Summer is a meadow full of moonlight,Summer is a mountain bright with sun .Love is summer’s promise, like a ring it has no end, And a smile is summer’s music,Like a song from friend to friend .

Something in the air brings on a feeling .Laughter is a morning’s melody .And when I hear those evening voices singing of Aloha, Something in the harmony brings out the joy in me .

Summer is a meadow full of moonlight,Summer is a mountain bright with sun .Love is summer’s promise, like a ring it has no end, And a smile is summer’s music,Like a song from friend to friend .

And when I hear those evening voices singing of Aloha,Something in the harmony brings out the joy in me .

Lovers may leave you,Lovers may turn awayOthers may scorn you,You know that they will someday

The seasons are fickle,And fate is not known as kind But friendship’s a diamond,And trouble’s a diamond mine

It’s time now for leavin’And sadness that we must partOur joy is believin’You’ll never leave our heart

We can’t know the future, Tomorrow remains unclear But one thing’s for certainYou’ll always be home right here

[Chorus]

It’s a Pleasure to Know You Karl WilliamsPaul’s Song

Chorus:It’s a pleasure to know you,A pleasure to see you smileA comfort to know,We’ll share the road a while

The pleasures are fleeting; The comforts are far between .It’s a pleasure to know you,And the comforts you bring

I came to your cityAfter I’d left my home And I was a stranger,Dressed up in a stranger’s clothes

The favors I needed,The charity’s out of style And rare is the beautyIn the face of a trusting child

They say life’s a journey,A highway from birth to death A map in despair,A travel in hopelessness

Well they may believe it,But just between you and me The trick to the travelin’Is all in the company

[Chorus]

Take Me Home, Country RoadsBill Danoff, John Denver & Taffy Nivert

Almost heaven, West VirginiaBlue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah RiverLife is old there, older than the treesYounger than the mountains, blowing like a breeze

Chorus: Country roads, take me home To the place I belongWest Virginia, mountain mama Take me home, country roads

All my memories gather round herMiner’s lady, stranger to blue waterDark and dusty, painted on the skyMisty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye

[Chorus]

I hear her voice, in the morning hour she calls me The radio reminds me of my home far awayAnd driving down the road, I get a feelingThat I should have been home yesterday, yesterday

[Chorus]

These Green Mountains Diane Martin & Rita Buglass GluckVermont State Song

These green hills and silver watersAre my home . They belong to me .And to all of her sons and daughters May they be strong and forever free .

Hi Ho the Rattlin’ Bog Irish Folk Song

Chorus:Hi ho the rattlin’ bog, the bog down in the valley-o,Hi ho the rattlin’ bog, the bog down in the valley-o .

Now in this bog there was a tree,A rare tree, a rattlin’ tree .A tree in the bog,And the bog down in the valley-o .

Now on this tree there was a limb,A rare limb, a rattlin’ limb .A limb on the treeAnd the tree in the bog, And the bog down in the valley-o .

Now on this limb there was a branch…Now on this branch there was a twig… Now on this twig there was a nest…Now in this nest there was an eggNow in this egg there was a bird…Now on this bird there was a wing… Now on this wing there was a feather…Now on this feather, there was a flea…

Wild Mountain Thyme Francis McPeake, Irish Robert Tannahill, Scottish

Oh, the summer time is coming, And the trees are sweetly blooming, And the wild mountain thyme Grows around the blooming heather . Will you go, lassie, go?

Chorus:And we'll all go togetherTo pull wild mountain thyme,All around the blooming heather . Will you go, lassie, go?

I will build my love a tower,By yon clear crystal fountain, And on it I will pileAll the flowers of the mountain . Will you go, lassie, go?

[Chorus]

If my true love she was gone,I would surely find another To pull wild mountain thymeAll around the purple heather . Will you go, lassie, go?

Rainbow’s End Biff Fink

Somewhere on a hillside,Where the woods are deep with pine, There’s a sudden apple clearing,There’s a secret place of mine .Yes, and somewhere there is starlight, Up the hill and round the bend,Just a quiet place for dreamers,That they call the Rainbow’s End .

Chorus:Rainbow’s End lies just before us,Yet it seems so far away .Isn’t that the way it’s always been? The things we need the mostAre always just around the bend .Still we know we’ll find them,When we reach the Rainbow’s End .

Somewhere there’s a harbor,That the world has never seen,Where the ships come in on firelight,And the waves are apple-green .Take your dreams into that haven,Take a prayer and take a friend .Make a wish and make a promise,On the gold at Rainbow’s End .

[Chorus]

The Rainbow Connection Williams & Ascher

Why are there so many songs about rainbows,And what’s on the other side?Rainbows are visions, but only illusions,And rainbows have nothing to hide . So we’ve been told and some choose to believe it: I know they’re wrong wait and see .Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection,The lovers, the dreamers, and me .

Who said that every wish would be heard and answered,When wished on the morning star . Somebody thought of that, and someone believed it, Look what it’s done so far . What’s so amazing that keeps us stargazing, And what do we think we might see? Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection,The lovers, the dreamers, and me .

All of us under its spell,We know that it’s probably magic .

Have you been half asleep and have you heard voices?I’ve heard them calling my name .Is this the sweet sound that calls the young sailors? The voice might be one and the same . I’ve heard it too many times to ignore it, It’s something that I’m s’posed to be .Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection,The lovers, the dreamers, and me . Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm…

River Bill Staines

I was born in the path of the winter wind,Raised where the mountains are old,Their springtime waters came dancing down,And I remember the tales they told .The whistlin’ ways of our younger days,Too quickly have faded on by,But all of their memories linger on,Like the light in a fading sky .

Chorus:River, take me along, In your sunshine, sing me your song,Ever movin’, and windin’ and free, You rollin’ old river, you changin’ old riverLet’s you and me, river, run down to the sea .

Well, I’ve been to the city and I’ve been back again,I’ve been moved by some things that I’ve learned .Met a lot of good people and I called them friends,Felt the changes when the seasons turned .I heard all of the songs that the children sang,And I’ve listened to love’s melodies,Felt my own music within me rise,Like the wind in the autumn trees .

[Chorus]

Some day when the flowers are bloomin’ still,Some day when the grass is still green,My rollin’ waters will ‘round me bend,And flow into the open sea .So here’s to the rainbow that’s followed me here .And here’s to the friends that I know .And here’s to the song that’s within me now,I will sing it where e’er I go .

[Chorus]

Those Silent Hills

Those silent hills,How sure and steadfast they stand,And when I’m hopeless and heartsick, They stretch their hand .

Those green-clad hills,They smile at clouds passing by,And catch the first star of eveningTo hold it high .

When we bid them goodbyeAnd we start to roam,They stand serene, unchanging, To welcome us home .

Those silent hills,How sure and steadfast they stand,And when I’m hopeless and heartsick,They stretch their hand .

Here on the Water Cara Latham

Here, on the water, surrounded by the beauty,Here, on the water, I look around .The colors shimmer and change with every moment,And music fills my heart with its sound,

Chorus:And I can sing, and I can play .I feel a peace that lasts throughout the day,And I choose joy, and I choose happiness,And when I look inside of me, I am who I want to be

And on this place in the mountains, surrounded by the trees,I am joy, I am rest, I am happy, I am blessed,I am free as I can be, and surrounded by the beauty,I am thankful to be me .

Here, on the water, surrounded by the mountains,Here, on the water, I look around .There’s time to wonder, to think and to notice,Away from the cares of life I can slow down .

[Chorus]

Barges Canadian Camp Song

Chorus:Barges, I would like to go with youI would like to sail the ocean blue .Barges, have you treasures in your hold?Do you fight with pirates brave and bold?

Out of my window looking in the nightI can see the barges’ flickering lights .Silently flows the river to the seaAnd the barges, too, go silently .

[Chorus]

Out of my window looking in the nightI can see the barges’ flickering lights .Starboard shines green and port is glowing red,I can see the barges far ahead .

[Chorus]

How my heart longs to fly away with youAs you sail across the ocean blue .But I must stay beside my window clearAs I watch you sail away from here .

[Chorus]

Out of my window looking in the nightI will watch till they are out of sight .Carrying their cargo far across the sea,How I wish that someday they’d take me .

Camp Aloha’s Daughters Sara Evans, adapted by Betsy Morgan

If I get to be a Clubber and never ever get my high rank,That’ll be alright .If I never do a hand-roll, if I don’t swim around Lake Morey,I know I’ll be just fine,’Cause I know exactly who I am .

Chorus:We are Camp Aloha’s daughters,We are great friends to each other,And when the day is done our Counselors (campers) are our biggest fans .

Sometimes, I’m clueless and I’m clumsy,But I’ve got friends that love me,I know just where I stand .It’s all a part of me, that’s who I am .

So when I make a big mistake, when I fall flat on my face,I know I’ll be alright .If I miss out on the camp show, if I never have an L . L .,That’ll be alright .’Cause nothing changes who I am .

[Chorus]

We are campers, we are counselors,We are lifeguards, we are trippers .We are Midis, we are Clubbers .We are land, and we are water .

Wildflowers Tom Petty

You belong among the wildflowers You belong in a boat out at sea Sail away, kill off the hours You belong somewhere you feel free

Run away, find you a lover Go away somewhere all bright and new I have seen no other Who compares with you

You belong among the wildflowers You belong in a boat out at sea You belong with your love on your arm You belong somewhere you feel free

Run away, go find a lover Run away, let your heart be your guide You deserve the deepest of cover You belong in that home by and by

You belong among the wildflowers You belong somewhere close to me Far away from your trouble and worries You belong somewhere you feel free You belong somewhere you feel free

Like men a thousand years ago Who sailed high seas uncharted,We’ve launched our ship and steered our course In every storm brave-hearted .Then, ho for the gale!Come hoist our sail! The sun on our shields is striking,And Skol to the man who sails life’s seasLike a valiant old Norse Viking!

Viking Song Carl Wonnberger

We are a mighty tribe of Vikings; Over the wide seas we roamWe love the restless torrent,For it is our only home .And where’er we go our song we’ll sing To our comrades bold and free . And we’ll shout “Ha-ha” for the Vikings, For stout Viking lads are we .

Carol’s Song Barnes Boffey & Paul Pilcher

Songs may be sung and bells may be rungIn praise of your years of givingSongs seem so small when we do recall The way that we now are living You’ve built tradition into our lives And touched those of many others Lanakila will always live onLed on by its sons and brothers We’ll build a union Of good and strong menAll Lanakilans .

Think of the campers you have involved In camp and in all its beautyGiving them honor, joy, and respectFor others, themselves, and duty Four thousand or more have gone through the doorAnd many will follow afterMany Julys and Augusts will passWhen tears will be turned to laughter We’ll build a unionOf good and strong menAll Lanakilans .

Don’t ever doubt that you are the oneWhose spirit’s been here to guide us Each of us here has some of your spark To give to the world outside us Hopefully now as things come to pass The candles will still be burningYou’ll stand beside to watch what we do And help us continue learning To build a unionOf good and strong men .All Lanakilans .Songs may be sung and bells may be rung for you .

The Duke of Plaza-Toro William Gilbert & Arthur Sullivan

In enterprise of martial kind, when there was any fighting, He led his regiment from behind, he found it less exciting . But when away his regiment ran, his place was at the fore, O! That Celebrated, Cultivated, Under-rated Nobleman,The Duke of Plaza-Toro!

In the first and foremost flight, Ha, Ha!You always found that Knight, ha, ha!That Celebrated, Cultivated, Under-rated Nobleman,The Duke of Plaza-Toro!

When, to evade destruction’s hand, to hide they all proceeded, No soldier in that gallant band hid half as well as he did, He lay conceal’d throughout the war, and so preserved his gore, O! That Unaffected, Undetected, Well-connected Warrior,The Duke of Plaza-Toro!

In ev’ry doughty deed, ha, ha!He always took the lead, ha, ha! That Unaffected, Undetected, Well-connected Warrior,The Duke of Plaza-Toro!

When told that they would all be shot unless they left the service,Our hero hesitated not, so marvelous his nerve is,He sent his resignation in, the first of all his corps, O! That Very Knowing, Overflowing, Easy-going Paladin,The Duke of Plaza-Toro!

To men of grosser clay, ha, ha!He always showed the way, ha, ha!That Very Knowing, Overflowing, Easy-going Paladin,The Duke of Plaza-Toro!

Barnes’ Song Robbie Pennoyer

How can a song find sound or senseTo sing our thanks with apt eloquence? How can we show you what we know is true: We are who we are thanks to you .

You made us laugh till rafters shook,Saw in our deeds the courage they took . You gave us candles then became our spark; Together we’ll light up the dark .

From you we’ve learned what’s really Real, And how to shape the feelings we feel; You helped us break the yoke of happenstance, To live now by choice not by chance .

When future years take measure ofYour service here, your wisdom and love, What they’ll discover we already see:Our lives will be your legacy .

[See] you’ve kept the dream of camp ambitious and strong, And now our greatest wish is that we carry it on .Our gratitude for all you’ve done no words could convey—Except those silly syllables you taught us to say:

Bum Diddley Oh! Bum Diddley Oh! Bum Diddley Oh! Bum Diddley Oh! Bum Diddley Oh! Bum Diddley Oh! Bum Diddley Oh! Bum Diddley Oh!

Songs may be sung and bells may be rung in praise of your years of giving .Songs seem so small when we do recall the way that we now are living . Songs may be sung and bells may be rung for you!

Love Changes Everything Andrew Lloyd WebberBob’s Song

Love, love changes everything, And faces, earth and sky .Love, love changes everything,How you live and how you die .Love can make the summer fly,Or a night seem like a lifetime .Yes love, love changes everything,Now I tremble at your name .Nothing in the world will ever be the same .

Love, love changes everything, Days are longer, words mean more .Love, love changes everything,Pain is deeper than before . Love will turn your world around,And that world will last forever . Yes love, love changes everything; Brings you glory, brings you shame . Nothing in the world will ever be the same .

Off into the world we go,Planning futures, shaping years . Love bursts in and suddenly, All our wisdom disappears .Love makes fools of everyone; All the rules we make are broken . Yes love, love changes everyone,Live or perish in its flame .Love will never never let you be the same . Love will never never let you be the same .

As we come together to celebrate 50 Years of The Aloha Foundation, of course, we plan to sing! This songbook was created for the occasion.

First, you will find songs that are sung at all of our camps, followed by seven selections from each of our three resident camps. We know there is overlap and that lyrics, in some cases, may vary slightly from the song you remember. We have listed song composers when they are known to us.

Happy singing!
