NYRA EYEING NIGHT RACING AT BELMONTby Bill Finley

The New York Racing Association is working to have racing

regulations changed so that it can begin to conduct racing at

night at Belmont Park on a limited basis. According to NYRA

President and CEO Chris Kay, a bill was passed last week in the

New York Senate that would allow Belmont to race at night two

days a week. The bill has not yet reached the New York State

Assembly.

The news of night racing at Belmont was revealed by Kay on

this week=s Thoroughbred Daily News podcast, brought to you

by Taylor Made.

Kay said the impetus to begin racing at night was to attract

new customers to Belmont, ones who may not be able to go

during the day due to work obligations.

Songbird Notches Ninth Grade I Win cont.

It was a meaningful win for Delaware native Porter, who grew

up going to Delaware Park with his parents. The 77-year-old=s

Horse of the Year Havre de Grace (Saint Liam) lost the 2011 Del

>Cap by a nose as the 3-5 favorite and his MGISW Jostle (Brocco)

was fourth as the 4-5 chalk in 2001. Porter, who has been

battling lymphoma, was able to attend Saturday=s race after

being released from Massachussetts General Hospital Thursday,

where he underwent a clinical trial (click here for more).

Songbird was named 2015's champion juvenile filly after a

four-for-four season with three Grade I victories, capped by the

GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Fillies. Opening her sophomore

account with a trio of victories in California, including the

GI Santa Anita Oaks, the bay was forced to miss the GI Kentucky

Oaks, where she was expected to be the heavy favorite, after

coming down with a fever and being forced to miss training.

Proving no worse for wear with a facile victory in the

GII Summertime Oaks when she returned to the track last June,Songbird took her show on the road to Saratoga, where she

dominated in both the GI CCA Oaks and GI Alabama S. Winningfor fun yet again over GISWs Carina Mia (Malibu Moon) andCathryn Sophia (Street Boss) in Parx=s GI Cotillion S. lastSeptember, the Hollendorfer pupil suffered the first loss of hercareer when a nose second to four-time Eclipse winner andfuture Hall of Famer Beholder (Henny Hughes) after a grittystretch battle in the GI Breeders= Cup Distaff at Santa Anita Nov. 4 (video), after which she collected her second Eclipsestatue. Songbird kicked off this season with a determined one-length victory over GSW Paid Up Subscriber (Candy Ride {Arg})in the GI Ogden Phipps S. on the GI Belmont S. undercard June 10 (video).

Pedigree Notes: Bred on the same Medaglia d=Oro/Forty Niner crossresponsible for Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra, Songbird is ahalf-sister to the dam of GSW Mico Margarita (Run Away andHide) and is a daughter of Ivanavinalot (West Acre), one of thebest horses to ever race in the green-and-white colors of herbreeder Gil Campbell=s Stonehedge Farm. and to a yearling filly by Tapizar. Ivanavinalot, who was bought

Frostmourne justified the public=s support with a powerhouse

performance in the Kent. Away well from post six, the dark bay

wove his way in towards the rail and tracked from second

several lengths behind longshot The Tortoise (K One King), who

set early fractions of :24 4/5 and :48 2/5. The chalk closed the

gap as three-quarters went up in 1:12 4/5 and drew even with

the pacesetter on the far turn. Frostmourne blew by The

Tortoise like he was standing still at the top of the lane and flew

home to an ultra-impressive daylight victory.

A decisive debut winner over the Saratoga turf course in

September, Frostmourne checked in fourth behind subsequent

GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Turf hero and recent GI Belmont

Derby winner Oscar Performance (Kitten=s Joy) in the GIII Pilgrim

S. at Belmont Oct. 1. Closing out his juvenile campaign with a

victory in that venue=s Awad S. four weeks later, the homebred

finished a half-length second as the favorite in his seasonal bow

in Aqueduct=s Woodhaven S. Apr. 22. He returned to winning

ways last time with a good-looking score in the June 3 GII Penn

Mile, a race which has produced the likes of Grade I winners

Catch a Glimpse (City Zip), Force the Pass (Speightstown) and

Bobby=s Kitten (Kitten=s Joy).

West Coast registered his first graded stakes success with a

convincing tally in the Los Alamitos Derby. With jockey Drayden

Van Dyke stepping in for Hall of Famer Mike Smith, who was in

Delaware to ride champion Songbird (Medaglia d=Oro) to victory

in the GI Delaware H., the favorite ran in a three-wide fourth

early and was floated out a few more paths rounding the first

turn as Cistron (The Factor) clocked an opening quarter in

:23.73. West Coast continued to run several paths off the rail in

fifth as Cistron was pressed along by comebacking Grade I

winner Klimt through a half in :47.89 and three-quarters in

1:11.64. Still left with plenty of work to do at the top of the long

Los Alamitos stretch, the Bob Baffert trainee steadily progressed

down the center of the track, rolling by his rivals late under a

hand ride to score a decisive victory. ATDN Rising Star@ Klimt,

last seen finishing eighth in the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Nov. 5,

finished second in his first start since being transferred from

Baffert to trainer Art Sherman.

AThis horse is improving all the time,@ Baffert said. AHe=s

starting to settle down. [Van Dyke] was instructed to wait, wait

and wait with him. If you go too early with him, he doesn=t

finish. It was sort of a gamble to sit back there, but it paid off

because you need to be patient with him. He took off the last

eighth of a mile. He needs to learn how to run like that. Mission

accomplished.@

The Hall of Famer added, AWe=ll look at the [GI] Travers [S. at

Saratoga Aug. 26]. A mile and a quarter should suit him. If he

comes out of this race well and trains well, we=ll go. I think it

would be a good spot for him.==

Graduating at second asking at Santa Anita Mar. 12, West

Coast came up a head short of Senior Investment (Discreetly

Mine) when second in Keenland=s GIII Stonestreet Lexington S.

Apr. 15. Returning to Arcadia to clear his first-level allowance

condition May 20, the $425,000 KEESEP buy was briefly being

considered for the GI Belmont S. June 10, but was instead re-

routed to the Easy Goer S. on the undercard, where he scored a

facile victory.

Pedigree Notes:

West Coast is out of champion Caressing, who took home top

juvenile filly honors in 2000 after a victory in that term=s

GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Fillies. She also won the 2001 GI La

Troienne S. and retired in the summer of 2002 with just shy of a

$1 million in earnings. The 19-year-old mare was not bred back

after producing West Coast and failed to get in foal to

Bodemeister the following season, but produced a Carpe Diem

colt Feb. 18 of this year. Caressing is also responsible for GSP

Overture | Coady photo Belmont Park | Sarah K. Andrew

GIII Indiana Oaks cont.

Overture went to the front and never looked back to notch thefirst graded stakes success of her young career Saturday night inShelbyville. The Florida-bred was making her first start aroundtwo turns for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott. Breaking from the rail, she made the lead comfortably andcoasted along through fractions of :24.68 and :49.63. Turning forhome while confronted by a pair of rivals, she dug in to findmore and re-broke to report home clearly in front. AComing into the first turn, I was on the lead pretty easily,@said jockey Julien Leparoux. AIt was very comfortable. I took itand she went all the way to the wire.@ A second-out winner going seven furlongs at Gulfstream Apr. 5, the dark bay shipped north and ran second and third in apair of Belmont allowance events May 3 and June 1,respectively. The latter effort came in the wake of UnchainedMelody (Smart Strike), a impressive next-out winner of the July 1 GII Mother Goose S. in Elmont. She worked three times inthe interim. AWe=ve always liked the filly,@ said Kenny McCarthy, assistantto Mott. AHer last race was maybe a bit of a head-scratcher. Buteven based on that, Bill thought she fit here tonight.@ Sean Tugel, director of bloodstock for WinStar Farm added,AIt=s fantastic. Her running lines over her last couple of raceshave been very good. The filly that beat her last time out cameback and one the Mother Goose last week. She=s a filly wethought would really appreciate the two turns, and we got herout of New York, which was a one-turn mile and a sixteenth.@

Pedigree Notes: Acquired for $385,000 as an OBS March 2-year-old in training, the winner is a half to SW & GSP Mexikoma (Birdstone). Seconddam Hidden Pleasure is a half-sister to GSW and sire Luftikus(Meadowlake). Toccet Over has an unnamed 2-year-old colt byMalibu Moon and a weanling filly by Bernardini.

NYRA Eyeing Night Racing at Belmont cont. from p1

AHow do we deliver racing in a way where people are going to

say I like this sport and I want to do it again?@ he said. AYou can

do some of that on their smart phones, but you can=t start a

relationship on the phone. You have to have face-to-face

interaction. So how do we bring more people to our NYRA tracks

to enjoy all we=ve done over the last four years to make it a

compelling experience? That=s our challenge. That=s precisely

why we are trying to get approval from the legislature to get

racing at night at Belmont two nights a week during both the

spring and fall meets. Most young people are at work during the

daytime. Most people, period, are at work during the daytime. If

you=ve never been brought out to the track as a young boy or

girl how do I get you to come out now? Well, I let you come out

after work, just the way the Yankees and the Mets and the Red

Sox do. On weekdays they have their events at night. I think

that=s the smart way for us to go in the future.@

Kay said the most recent legislative session ended without the

Assembly having a chance to act on the bill and the next

opportunity for it to do so will not be until 2018. If the bill sails

through the Assembly and is signed by Governor Andrew

Cuomo, it=s possible there could be night racing at Belmont as

soon as the 2018 fall meet or the 2019 spring meet.

AWe will continue with our efforts to try to make this happen

because I think it is important not only to the New York Racing

Association, but for the entire industry,@ Kay said. AWe=ve got 18

million people in the area. We want to say to these people,

>Come on out on a Thursday night or a Friday or Saturday night,=

depending what the schedule might look like, and have a great

time. You can have dinner, wager on the races, it will be fun.

This would appeal to a lot of things people are searching for

right now in America.@

NYRA Eyeing Night Racing at Belmont cont.

NYRA has already looked into what would be involved so far as

adding lights to the massive Belmont facility.

AWhat we=ve looked at is to have a state of the art lighting

system, an LED system that would shine directly on the track so

there isn=t that effusion to the area around it,@ Kay said. AYou

can actually dial up and dial down the intensity of the lighting.

You could have the lights dialed up with seven minutes before

post time and after the race has been completed you can dial

them down. The technology is there that makes it very effective.

It=s the same technology being used at other sporting venues

and even with bridges. These lights will cost more initially to use,

but it is worth it. It is worth it for the neighborhood and for the

fans.@

Kay said there are no plans to bring night racing to Saratoga.

AThere is a very different audience at Saratoga than at

Belmont,@ he said APeople come as families for three, four, five

days to Saratoga. Our research has shown that 60 percent of the

people who come to Saratoga live outside the nine-county

capital region. So they will come for several days as a family for

a vacation. Their intention is to have an enjoyable day at the

track, like people have an enjoyable day at a theme park.@

Breaking news: Key House committee votes to reopen horse

slaughter plants in U.S. Today, the Appropriations Committee of

the U.S. House of Representatives voted narrowly to give the

green light for the reopening of horse slaughter plants in the

United States. There were 27 members of Congress who voted

against the bipartisan amendment offered by Reps. Lucille

Roybal-Allard, D-Calif., and Charlie Dent, R-Pa., to bar horse

slaughter operations in the United States, and 25 who supported

it. All but one Democrat on the committee voted to oppose this

dreadful idea, while 26 of 30 Republicans favored it. Wayne

CHEESE ON (g, 2, Scipion--Tejano Sea, by Sea of Secrets), who

closed to take his debut sprinting five furlongs at Laurel June 17,

was the 4-5 favorite to go two-for-two here. The dark bay

gelding raced in mid-pack before reeling in the pacesetters on

the turn and outbattling Whereshetoldmetogo (El Padrino) to

the wire to win by a neck. Cheese On is a full-brother to Keep

Momma Happy (SW, $129,100). Tejano Sea produced a colt by

ANALYZE (f, 3, Candy Ride {Arg}--Alchemist {GSP, $200,288}, by

A.P. Indy) needed six tries to break through, but managed the

feat as the 2-1 choice at Monmouth May 28. Trying stakes

company for the first time last out in this track=s Light Hearted S.

June 15, Analyze tired late to be fourth in the short field.

Favored at 3-5 in this drop back to easier company, the

homebred stalked the early pace, moved up to take a brief

advantage on the far turn, and was soon overtaken by What

About Tonight (Archarcharch) as that rival spurted away in the

stretch. Undeterred, Analyze maintained her tempo late and got

up in the final jump to post a head score over What About

Tonight. The winner is a half to And Why Not (Street Cry {Ire}),

MGISP, $262,965; and Far From Over (Blame), GSW, $237,000.

A daughter of Grade I-winning Aldiza (Strom Cat), Alchemist--

who failed to produce a live foal in 2015 and 2016--produced a

colt by Uncle Mo this season. Lifetime Record: 8-2-2-2, $78,815.

+BREXIT REVENGE (f, 2, I Want Revenge--Queens'college Eng,

by Bellamy Road), dismissed at 13-1 in this off-turf debut, was

hustled out of the gate to keep pace with the early leaders. She

was outfooted into the turn and found herself in mid-pack after

a quarter in :22.33. She snuck through along the rail as

pacesetting favorite Dawn Lightning (The Factor) drifted out

slightly and powered clear in the dying strides to win by one

length. Afsaneh (Scat Daddy) just nosed out Dawn Lightning for

second. Brexit Revenge is the first winner for her freshman sire

(by Stephen Got Even). Queens=college Eng, a $260,000 OBS

March juvenile in 2013, won a Tampa Bay maiden in March

2016 for Pat Madden and John Stevens after producing Brexit

Revenge. The mare had two recorded works at Monmouth this

May, but is back in Florida recuperating from a knee chip,

according to Stephens. AWe had them in the barn together at

Monmouth and it was kind of cool--we took them over to gate

school together,@ Stephens said in a text message. This is the

ENABLE POWERS TOCLASSIC DOUBLE

With the middle-distance 3-year-old colts failing to provide a

generation leader, Juddmonte=s G1 Epsom Oaks heroine Enable

(GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) laid claim to being the best of both sexes

in her age group on Saturday with a powerful display in the

G1 Darley Irish Oaks at The Curragh. Never out of her comfort

zone, the homebred surged away from overmatched rivals to

make her odds of 2-5 look generous as she slammed the

G1 Pretty Polly S. runner-up Rain Goddess (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) by

5 1/2 lengths. In this imperious mood, there would have to be

some serious improvers among either the King George or Arc

protagonists to stop her from dominating at Ascot in a fortnight

or at Chantilly in October if connections go that way.

Frankie Dettori, who only returned this week after suffering a

shoulder injury last month, was taken aback by the

performance. AI think she has improved since Epsom--she was

always in second gear and when I gave her a backhander she

flew,@ he commented after steering his fourth Irish Oaks winner.

AI was able to ease my way to the line and save my shoulder.

She is amazing. She has a good cruising speed for a stayer and

can quicken and gets the distance really well. She doesn=t do

much at home and is hard to gauge, but as long as she gives

performances like that we don=t have to worry too much.@

>HARRY= BESTS ELDERS AND WINS THE >CUP=Ground down by Caravaggio (Scat Daddy) in Royal Ascot=s

G1 Commonwealth Cup June 23, Godolphin=s acquisition Harry

Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) came back from the canvass with

steel in his veins to comprehensively reverse that form in

Saturday=s G1 Darley July Cup at Newmarket. Joined by

Ballydoyle=s Intelligence Cross (War Front) on the front end as

he had been at Ascot, the 9-2 shot had his blood up once more

but this time had plenty left to shake off that rival inside the

final quarter mile. Powering through the closing stages as the

slow-starting 10-11 favourite Caravaggio failed to make serious

inroads, Harry Angel hit the line strong with 1 1/4 lengths to

spare over last year=s winner Limato (Ire) (Tagula {Ire}), with the

outsider Brando (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) a half-length away denying

Caravaggio a place in the frame by a short head. AHe=d have won

last time without a shadow of a doubt and I knew he was the

best, but it was a little bit unfortunate the way the race turned

out,@ jockey Adam Kirby commented. Cont. p4 (Click here)

Enable Powers to Classic Double Cont. from p1

AI probably came back a week or two early, but this was the

dangling carrot that made me,@ he added.

Thoughts that Enable would be this good at the start of the

year were fanciful, even allowing for the promise of her debut

win over a mile on Newcastle=s Tapeta at the end of November.

All focus was on her stablemate Shutter Speed (GB) (Dansili

{GB}) as they lined up for the same 10-furlong conditions race at

Newbury Apr. 2 which had been taken by a previous Oaks

heroine in Light Shift (Kingmambo) and that proved correct as

Enable finished third behind her and the eventual G3 Bahrain

Trophy scorer Raheen House (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}). It was

only when she upset Alluringly (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) on her first

attempt at this kind of trip in the

May 10 Listed Cheshire Oaks that

she drew attention from the

pundits, but in the lead-up to the

June 2 Epsom Classic it was all

about Rhododendron (Ire) (Galileo

{Ire}). In a dramatic storm, Khalid

Abdullah=s homebred displayed

what she was truly capable of by

cracking that Ballydoyle favourite

and going away to score by five

lengths in race-record time. There

was certainly more to take from

that race than the blue riband 24

hours later and she proved here

that she would be more than a match for any colt around.

Travelling with elan as she tracked the leader Bengala (Fr)

(Pivotal {GB}) in a clear second throughout the early stages,

there was a danger that she was overdoing it, but as soon as

Frankie asked the question in the straight she settled any

worries in an instant. As Rain Goddess emerged to chase, she

could have tired but instead she continued to grow stronger as

the line approached and she duly hit that in a rapid time.

AShe did it very well and got a nice lead into the straight,@

trainer John Gosden commented. AI couldn=t be more pleased

and she has probably come on since Epsom. She has tactical

speed and a great temperament and has always been a lovely

filly to be around. The [G1] King George and Queen Elizabeth S.

is an option, but I see she has a near-hind cut so we=ll have to

see. There is also the [Aug. 24 G1] Yorkshire Oaks and the [Oct.

1] Arc, so we have plenty of options.@

Teddy Grimthorpe was also impressed. AThat was very

exciting--it=s a long time back to [the operation=s two previous

Irish Oaks winners] Wemyss Bight and Bolas and she has done it

in the style of a top-class filly,@ he commented. AThe way the

race was run at Epsom, they really put it to her and she

outstayed them and although today the pace was not quite so

energetic and it was run at a

sensible gallop it was something

to get a good stride into. She was

very much physically tall and leggy

at two, but has got some

substance and strength to her

now and also has a very nice

temperament. I=d have to talk to

John and Prince Khalid about the

King George, as it could come too

soon and we could instead go to

the Yorkshire Oaks and other

races in the autumn. She=d have

to be supplemented for the Arc,

but they are nice thoughts to have.@

Dermot Weld was delighted with the performance of last

year=s G3 C.L. & M.F. Weld Park S. scorer Eziyra (Ire) (Teofilo

{Ire}) and said, AThat was an excellent renewal of the race and I

am thrilled with her. She was a good group winner over seven at

two and the way she got that trip, we might look at further with

her. There is the [G2] Park Hill [S. at Doncaster Sept. 14] and

possibly the [G2] Prix de Royallieu [at Chantilly Sept. 30]. She is a

filly that is just developing and coming at the right time.@ Cont. p3

John Gosden also said of >TDN Rising Star= and the

G2 Ribblesdale S. winner Coronet (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who

plugged on into fourth, AShe was not happy and was changing

her legs on the track, with Olivier Peslier niggling her along

early. She is a better filly than that and we live to fight another

day.@

Pedigree Notes... Enable is out of the Listed Prix Charles Laffitte winner and

G3 Prix de Flore runner-up Concentric, who also produced the

G2 Prix de Pomone and G3 Prix Allez France third Contribution.

She is one of five black-type performers to have emerged from

the G3 Prix de Royaumont winner Apogee alongside sire Apsis

(GB) and the G1 Prix de Diane runner-up Dance Routine (GB)

(Sadler=s Wells). The latter is in turn responsible for the multiple

top-flight winner and champion Flintshire (GB) (Dansili {GB})

who was twice second in the Arc, and also the G2 Prix Kergolay

third Dance Moves (GB) (Dansili {GB}). Apogee=s Listed Prix

Joubert winner Space Quest (GB) (Rainbow Quest) is the dam of

the G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris runner-up Kocab (GB)

(Unfuwain), while the third dam is Bourbon Girl who was

runner-up in both the G1 English and Irish Oaks. Her best

progeny was the G2 Grand Prix de Chantilly winner and

G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud runner-up Daring Miss (GB)

(Sadler=s Wells). The family also features the G1 Grand Prix de

Saint-Cloud-winning sire Spanish Moon and G2 Ribblesdale S.

scorer Spanish Sun (El Prado {Ire}). Concentric also has a

2-year-old colt by Dansili (GB) named Centroid (GB), a yearling

Harry Bests Elders and Wins The >Cup= Cont. from p1 (click here)

AHe had no right to finish second in that race and to be fair to

him it flung him forward,@ said Kirby. AHe=s gone from boy to

man with every race and I can=t express how good he is.@

Harry Angel had his issues with the starting stalls during his

2-year-old days, but they did not stop him winning the G2 Mill

Reef S. as a maiden at Newbury in September and his comeback

effort when 1 1/2-lengths second to Blue Point (Ire) (Shamardal)

giving him four pounds in the May 3 G3 Pavilion S. at Ascot

marked him as a serious prospect for the major sprints. Taking a

leap forward by breaking the course record in the six-furlong

G2 Sandy Lane S. at Haydock May 27, he allowed himself to be

drawn into a slogging match with Intelligence Cross in the

Commonwealth Cup and with his guard dropped opened himself

up to a late assault from Caravaggio.

Clive Cox had talked about the way he had emerged from that

encounter and the money spoke for him despite the significant

sums lumped on Ballydoyle=s great hope.

Whereas Intelligence Cross had spoilt his party at Ascot, Harry

Angel refused to allow him to get to him this time even though

he tended to over-race again. Ryan Moore tracked Limato after

missing the kick, but they were always playing catch-up and

Caravaggio was relying on the leader caving in and his turn of

acceleration proving as effective as it had at the Royal meeting.

By the furlong pole, it was clear that neither situation was

unfolding and the grey merely plugged on towards the stand=s

side as Harry Angel roared on in isolation.

Clive Cox has his eye on the Sept. 9 G1 Haydock Sprint Cup

now. AHe=s always been special, but he=s taken kid gloves to get

going,@ he said. AWe always hoped he was Group 1 material and

he is. I=m so pleased to get this for Sheikh Mohammed on his

birthday and am so pleased for my team. It was really funny, but

when he was beaten at Ascot Adam was disappointed and the

look in the horse=s eye coming off the track there seemed to say,

>okay guys I=m getting this now.= I=ve not needed an alarm clock

in the morning since I got this horse and I was very confident

coming here.@ Cont. p5Harry Angel and Adam Kirby | Racing Post

Limato=s trainer Henry Candy was offering no excuses

afterwards. AI think Harry Angel is a very good horse, but Harry

Bentley was very positive and said he felt as good as he ever,@

he said. AHe moved well on the ground and did everything right,

it=s just that Harry Angel went quicker. There will be no more

five furlongs for him. It will be the Sprint Cup if it=s dry and the

[Oct. 1 G1 Prix de la] Foret if it=s dry.@

Brando=s handler Kevin Ryan was relieved to see his stable star

come back to his best after a tame display in the G2 Duke of

York S. and said, AHe could have done with a bit more cut in the

ground. The obvious race for him would be the [G1 Prix]

Maurice de Gheest [at Deauville Aug. 6]. He would have got

another furlong today. I would like to come back for Champions

Day at Ascot.@

Aidan O=Brien took Caravaggio=s first defeat on the chin. AHe

ran very well. Ryan said he was a little bit slow out the gates and

that probably left him a bit on the back foot,@ he commented.

AI=m not making any excuses.@

Pedigree Notes... Harry Angel=s dam Beatrix Potter is a half-sister to Xtension

(Ire) (Xaar {GB}), a former Clive Cox star who captured the

seven-furlong G2 Vintage S. before winning the G1 Champions

Hong Kong Gold Cup for John Moore. His family also features

the G1 National S. runner-up Wathab (Ire), the GII Seminole H.-

Early clues that Gustav Klimt occupied a high placing in the

pecking order among the Ballydoyle juveniles came when he

was introduced in the same six-furlong Curragh maiden May 28

used to launch Churchill (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) 12 months earlier

and like that dual Classic hero, he was not sharp enough to

come out on top. Showing some promise in fifth there, he was

sent to the track=s seven-furlong maiden July 2 which the stable

had won with Duke of Marmalade (Ire), Rip Van Winkle (Ire),

Roderic O=Connor (Ire), The United States (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and

Gleneagles (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and was able to demonstrate his

obvious class and earn >TDN Rising Star= status with an

authoritative success. The portents were strong as he proved

hot property in the market for this and all seemed to be going to

plan as he enjoyed a perfect rhythm near the steady early pace.

Held on to by Ryan Moore as the sprint began passing halfway,

Gustav Kilmt met significant trouble 1 1/2 out as he was

snatched up and his chance looked temporarily lost there. If his

rider was perturbed, visually it was impossible to tell as he drew

on all the calm his experience and skill has endowed him with

and switched his mount towards the far rail. Picking up

impressively in the style of a potential Guineas colt from there,

he caught the strong-finishing Nebo 50 yards from the line

before his Galileo staying power kicked in.

AHe=s a very good horse and I really liked him on both starts,@

his rider said. AHe ran real green, as he had never been in tight

before but that was a very good performance to get back from

very good turn of foot.@

Typically, the bookmakers ran scared afterwards and cut the

winner to prohibitive odds of around 6-1, but Aidan O=Brien is

planning on putting Gustav Klimt along the lines of his past

potential top-notchers. ARyan felt the last day when he let him

go at the Curragh he surprised him how he quickened and he

G2 Superlative S. Cont.

AHe was just coming and it got a little bit tight, but he switched

him very quick and he took off. We always thought he would be

a National S. and Dewhurst-type horse. Obviously we have the

Futurity [at The Curragh Aug. 20] and that is a Group 2. They are

the races we would be thinking of.@

Charlie Hills was delighted with the runner-up Nebo, who was

bouncing back from a latest flop when only ninth in the G2

Coventry S. AHe has run a great race,@ he said. AI think he is quick

enough for six. He is just a proper 2-year-old. He probably just

got a little bit lost in the dip. When he hit the rising ground he

came on again. He has got a few entries abroad.@

Pedigree Notes... Gustav Klimt is the eighth winner produced by the speedy

Listed Empress S. winner and G2 Prix Robert Papin runner-up

full-siblings include the stable=s G3 Silver Flash S. winner

Wonderfully (Ire), the Listed Naas Sprint S. scorer Cuff (Ire) and

the G1 St James=s Palace S. third Mars (Ire), the last of which

enjoyed a tall reputation at Ballydoyle in his formative period.

He is also a half to the G1 Gran Criterium-winning Italian

highweight Nayarra and to the dams of this year=s Listed

Lingfield Oaks Trial winner and G2 Ribblesdale S. third Hertford

Dancer (GB) (Foxwedge {Aus}) and the Listed Lingfield Derby

also Kodiac (GB) who is making his own name.

This dynasty is a perfect blend of speed and stamina, with the

middle-distance performers Sadian (GB) (Shirley Heights {GB}),

Fourth in another valuable handicap at Musselburgh last time

defeating last term=s G1 Prix de l=Abbaye heroine and 1-2 chalk

Marsha for a personal best, representing a sixth individual

enjoying a break on the pack through the initial fractions, he

MADE FOR THE DEEP END Ambitiously named, Nadine Chiari=s Phelps Win (Fr)

(Muhtathir {GB}) is living up to his title at present and arrives at

Maisons-Laffitte on Sunday for his biggest test in the G2 Prix

Eugene Adam. Last seen comprehensively beating >TDN Rising

Star= Plumatic (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the nine-furlong G3 Prix de

Guiche at Chantilly May 7, he was improving there off a prior

second to Graphite (Fr) (Shamardal) in the G3 Prix la Force over

the same course and distance Apr. 9 and could yet be anything.

This has the look of a smart race, with Haras de Saint Pair=s >TDN

Rising Star= Volfango (Ire) (Dutch Art {GB}) defending his

unbeaten record off a similar sojourn having scored over 10

furlongs here May 24 and Andre Fabre bringing Godolphin=s

Apr. 25 Listed Prix de Suresnes scorer Avilius (GB) (Pivotal {GB})

back over the same track and trip.

AAvilius is well and in good form,@ Godolphin=s Lisa-Jane

Graffard said. AHe only just does enough at home, so it is hard to

gauge his ability, but he is ready to run up to his best. He won

the Prix Suresnes here over the course and distance in April and

has been pointing at this race ever since.@

Fabre, who holds the record of 14 wins in this, also saddles

Khalid Abdullah=s Finche (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who was third

behind Al Shaqab=s unbeaten Afandem (Fr) (Zoffany {Ire}) in the

ListedPrix Ridgway over this trip at Compiegne June 12.

MAKING THE CONNECTION Without a pattern-race win since last July, Godolphin=s Dutch

Connection (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}) may have been found an ideal

opportunity to regain some self-esteem in Sunday=s G2 Minstrel

S. at The Curragh. Since his success in the G2 Lennox S. during

last year=s Glorious Goodwood meeting, the chestnut has been

out of the frame on four occasions but there was a glimmer that

he retained ability when sixth in the G1 Queen Anne S. at Royal

Ascot June 20. ADutch Connection has been pleasing me since

his first run of the year at Royal Ascot,@ trainer Charlie Hills

commented. AWe wanted to get another run into him prior to

going for the [Aug. 1] Lennox S. again and seven furlongs on

quick ground will suit.@

Dutch Connection was the winner of the G3 Jersey S. two

years ago and that honour almost fell to Spirit of Valor (War

Front) this season. Caught late by Le Brivido (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) in

that seven-furlong contest June 21, he is the pick of Ryan Moore

over last year=s G2 Joel S. winner Cougar Mountain (Ire) (Fastnet

Rock {Aus}) and last year=s G3 Anglesey S. scorer Peace Envoy

(Fr) (Power {GB}). This tight affair also features last year=s

G1 Prix Jean Prat runner-up Stormy Antarctic (GB) (Stormy

Atlantic), who came back to something like his best last time

when second to the smart Morando (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) in

Windsor=s Listed Midsummer S. at a mile July 1.

RENEWING RIVALRY Sunday=s G2 Kilboy Estate S. at The Curragh looks a wide-open

affair without a stand-out and features the July 2 G1 Pretty Polly

S. third and fifth Turret Rocks (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) and

Laganore (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), who were also first and

second respectively in the G3 Blue Wind S. over 10 furlongs here

May 13. Martyn Meade sends across the May 31 Listed

Nottinghamshire Oaks scorer Wilamina (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}),

while the 3-year-old generation=s representation is made up of a

duo from Ballydoyle headed by the Pretty Polly ninth

Pocketfullofdreams (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}).

AL WUKAIR RETURNS Sunday=s action at Maisons-Laffitte will offer some key clues

for the remainder of the season and all eyes will be on Al

Wukair (Ire) (Dream Ahead) as he comes back in the G3 Prix

Messidor. Last seen finishing third in the G1 2000 Guineas May

6, Al Shaqab Racing=s class act has course form having won the

Apr. 10 G3 Prix Djebel and remains one of the year=s most

exciting prospects. Due to weight-for-age and the penalty

system, he gets eight pounds from Shadwell=s Taareef (Kitten=s

Joy) who returned to upstage his stablemate Zelzal (Fr) (Sea the

Stars {Ire}) in Chantilly=s G3 Prix Bertrand du Breuil at this trip

June 18.

over this course and distance last time, earned similar status

with a dominant display in this return. Breaking well from an

outer gate to lead after the initial strides, the 9-2 chance

maintained control thereafter and powered ever clear under

mild urging inside the final quarter mile to easily account for

Medal of Honour (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) by an impressive

8 1/2 lengths.

AHe did it nicely and he=s a nice colt,@ said winning rider Ana

O=Brien. AHe travelled easy and went forward when I asked him.

He made his own way home and did it the hard way. It was soft

ground the first day he ran and he liked that better ground

today. It is beautiful good-to-firm ground.@

His stablemate Mendelssohn (Scat Daddy), a $3-million KEESEP

half-brother to the incredible MGISW Beholder (Henny Hughes)

and GISW sire Into Mischief (Harlan's Holiday), was a shade

green through the early strides and made little impact with an

highs in Goodwood=s 2014 and 2016 G2 King George S.--as well

as hitting the board in last term=s G1 Nunthorpe S. over this

Already a dual winner at this tricky track last summer, Viscount

Barfield had earned a tilt at black-type with a latest success in a

handicap over this trip at York June 17 and course experience

paid off as he spun round the tight circuit to upset Jungle Cat.

Held up early off the inevitable tussle for the lead, the bay

stayed on the rail and enjoyed a perfect split to take the

advantage passing the furlong pole after which he had a touch

more stamina than the favourite.

The dam, who also has a 3-year-old filly named All of Me (GB)

Brought to the far side in the final three furlongs, the 3-1 second

AShe did a nice bit of work the other day and the fillies are just

coming to hand now,@ trainer Charlie Appleby said. AI=ve not

really run many fillies, as they have taken time to come to hand.

She has got a great pedigree and trip-wise she will get further.

She would be fine over seven furlongs or a mile. I know this was

only a maiden, but she has got plenty of boot. She travelled very

well and picked up well. She is a filly with a bright future. The

[G1] Moyglare [Stud S. at The Curragh Sept. 10], on the back of

that, is quite a realistic target. To be fair it is a little bit tricky

placing fillies like this when they win a class two maiden, as it

rules them out of novice events. She might be one that has to be

thrown in the deep end and go straight there.@ Speirbhean, who

>QUEBEC= RESISTS >SIEGE= TO REMAIN PERFECT Siege of Quebec (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), a A$1.2m Inglis

Easter yearling, prevailed in a thriller, to take his record to two-

for-two in a 1400-metre handicap at Rosehill Saturday (Video),

reported Racenet.com. The full-brother to Australian Group 3

winner and MG1SP Bull Point (Aus) flashed good speed from the

stalls, but seemed in deep water on the far turn, as the Chris

Waller-trained Calculated (Aus) (So You Think {NZ}) appeared

poised to pounce. Siege of Quebec wasn=t finished yet though

and hit another gear to win by a half-length.

AHe looked under a bit of pressure at the top of the straight,

but that=s just the colt, he=s certainly got plenty of fighting

qualities,@ remarked co-trainer Adrian Bott, who trains in

partnership with Gai Waterhouse. AHe=s such a naturally

talented horse, but there=s a lot of raw ability there at the

moment. He=s still working out what it=s all about, still learning

when to quicken, when to let down, but when he=s challenged

he knows exactly what to do and importantly at the moment he

knows where the line is. He=s bred to be anything. Once he puts

it all together and learns, he=ll be a serious horse.@

A first out winner over 1250 metres at Newcastle on June 27,

Siege of Quebec, who races for an ownership group headed by

Coolmore, will now be given some time off, with an eye toward

the G1 Golden Rose at Rosehill on Sept. 9.

Added Bott, AThe immediate plan is that we will be heading

towards the Golden Rose. We have a plan mapped out for him,

probably going through the [G3] Ming Dynasty [Quality H. Aug.

26] leading in.@

AHe=s a smart colt,@ said Berry. AI=m very thankful of Adrian and

Gai and the Coolmore boys for giving me the ride. I=ve had a lot

of luck with them in the past with some very good horses

including the stallion Vancouver (Aus) (Medaglia d=Oro), so it

would be nice if this boy could do the same.@

FIRST STAKES WIN FOR SUPIDO Although previously placed at the top level the Mick Kent

trained Supido (Aus) (Sebring {Aus}) gained his first stakes win

when justifying favouritism in the G3 Monash S. at Caulfield on

Saturday. The Gilgai Farm bred entire was settled in rear early

by Luke Nolen in the 1100m contest before being unleashed by

Nolen early in the straight. He showed a smart change of gear to

beat Daytona Grey (Aus) (Artie Schiller) by three quarters of a

length leaving his trainer relieved after filling in a gap on the

horse=s resume. "It's good to get that win out of the way

because it's his first stakes win. He's been Group One and Group

Two placed and I was dying to get him a stakes win,@ Kent told

Racing And Sports. Supido showed he can handle himself against

the best when he finished third to Black Heart Bart (Aus)

(Blackfriars {Aus}) in the G1 Darley Goodwood at Morphettville

last year and his trainer is keen to give him another chance at

winning a Group 1. "I think he's a Group One horse. He's had a

few issues. He gets sore feet and hard ground niggles him a bit

but he's come back really well this time. It's the happiest I've

been with him for a while," he said.
