Known for an inherent ability to connect to their audience, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver prove that talent once again on Life Is a Story, their latest release for Mountain Home. The 12-song collection contains a mix of fervent ballads, uplifting up-tempos, thought- ful lyrics, powerful picking and superb vocal performances. On Life Is a Story, the group demonstrates musical storytelling at its best with songs by some of the finest writers in the business. Donna Ulisse contributes “The Guitar Case,” rendered here with equal parts power and melancholy as it relates the tale of a man searching for purpose. “The Little Girl,” written by late Country legend Harley Allen, journeys from tragedy to redemption through the eyes of an innocent child. “Kids These Days” speaks to how time changes all things, while “Life to My Days” is a stand-out single that reminds us to make the most of the time we have. Performed in their signature, driving Bluegrass style, “Life of a Hard Working Man,” is another radio-friendly track that focuses on life from a blue-collar viewpoint. “What Am I Living For,” the classic Chuck Willis R&B song, gets a surpris- ing DLQ treatment in waltz format. “Love Lives Again” is a rare song about resurrected love that highlights why this vocal power- house has received so many accolades. “The Bluegrass Blues” is magical and magnetic, offering a haunting “high-lonesome” sound that melds traditional instrumentation with more modern lyrics to immediately capture the listener’s attention. With over 40 albums to their credit, the group has won numerous major awards, including seven International Bluegrass Music Association Vocal Group of the Year honors. For his contributions to cultural heritage as a musical trailblazer, Doyle received the National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship award in 2006 and was inducted into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame in 2012. DLQ is an influential force in today’s Bluegrass world, and their last two releases (In Session, Burden Bearer) received back-to-back Grammy nominations in 2016 and 2017, respectively. Life Is a Story carries forward this mindset of creative excellence. The band is energetic, proficient and polished to Lawson’s exceedingly high standards, and includes members: Josh Swift (Resophonic Guitar, Acoustic Lead Guitar and Percussion); Joe Dean (Banjo and Guitar); Dustin Pyrtle (Lead and Tenor vocals, Guitar); Eli Johnston (Lead and Baritone vocals, Bass) and Stephen Burwell (Fiddles). At the vanguard is Lawson: ever the patriarch and ever the statesman. Life Is a Story is not simply the tale of a group’s musical journey, but a body of work that speaks to a journey we all take. Thankfully, the troubadours of this legendary band continue to tell that story.
