Somiedo Nature Park
I offer you a unique experience in one of
the best preserved corners of the
Cantabrian mountain range. It is a nature
reserve and home to a multitude of animal
species such as grouse, griffon vultures,
deer, wolves and, of course, brown bears.
I will show you the best hiking trails in
Somiedo Natural Park to observe the brown
bear in the wild and the best places to enjoy
its landscapes, cuisine and people.

SPRING – SUMMERBear sighting
The best seasons to observe
the Cantabrian brown bear are in
spring and summer. The bears
that come out of hibernation
need to feed themselves and in
these seasons, they can be
seen in green areas because
herbaceous plants are their
main food source, together with
some carrion.
After hibernation they need
to put on weight in order to
recover from hibernation,
which is why it’s common to see
bears roaming in open
spaces. The fact that it is
rutting season plays an
important role; the males
chase the females and the
activity and movement of
bears is higher than in any
other season in the year.
The Brown bear after hibernation
Along with bear sighting, I
offer the possibility of taking
hiking trails which go through
brown-bear habitat. This
consists of a hiking trail
through the different types of
food, tracks and traces, both
those of the bears and of
other animals. Enjoying a
walk and the unique
environment is something
essential to each route that I
go on in Somiedo.
Just like the expert mountain
guide that I am, I am
responsible for
accompanying you all the
time on the trails and
teaching you about anything
to do with the sighting of
animals in the natural park.
Furthermore, I will advise you
about the places of interest,
the typical gastronomy of the
region and other possible
excursions.

SPRING – SUMMERBear sighting
1Meeting point: Somiedo Pola. Once the group has gathered, we
will go to the hotel and check in. Dinner and rest.
SATURDAY
Breakfast and departure in the morning to observe the Cantabrian brown
bear in the wild.
After the sighting, I will accompany anybody who is interested in
an excursion to see traces, tracks, food and the environment of the brown
bear. Free time for those not interested in this activity.
Lunch-picnic: sandwiches, chocolates fruit, refreshments etc.
Visit to the Interpretation Centre 'Somiedo y el Oso' (Somiedo and the
Bear) where we will learn about the relationship that the inhabitants of the
municipality have maintained with the brown bear since antiquity until
today. We will also visit 'La Sima de los Osos', a cave with some bear remains
and other fauna, which is thousands of years old.
Departure in the late afternoon to observe the brown bear in the wild in
Somiedo.
Dinner and rest.
SUNDAY
Breakfast and morning outing to observe the Cantabrian brown bear in the
wild.
After the sighting, we will visit the Eco museum of Somiedo which will allow us to see the traditional way of life of the cowboys of Somiedo. It exhibits a
form of life which for centuries took advantage of a sometimes hostile
environment, preserving all its environmental wealth and creating a unique
landscape where human impact in the form of brañas (traditional dwellings), mills and olleras (where milk was kept cool before refrigeration) is just as
spectacular as the natural features.
Lunch at a typical Asturian restaurant in Valle de Lago: stews, fabada, chops,
and magnificent dessert; all accompanied with great Asturian cider.
Farewell.
