The BuildingThe gymnasium was the location for volleyball matches during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Initial BriefInternal solar protection was necessary for the upper plastic facade, with its particularly large span.

The BuildingThe university is expected to cover a total of 8 million m2 on a site on King Khalid InternationalAirport Road, to the north of Riyadh. Of this total area, buildings will occupy around 3 million m2. The university will include administration blocks, faculties, a 700-bed student hospital, laboratories, research centres, and a residential area that includes accommodation for students and staff. The capacity of the university will be around 26,000 students.

Initial BriefThe solution adopted at Princess Noura Bint Abdul Rahman University aims to combine high energy performance and maximum user comfort.

Somfy solutionsThe system to be supplied is Somfy’s animeo KNX, an intelligent system based on the KNX protocol for automation in buildings. It will allow the shades in the building to act and react according to the external weather conditions and students’ comfort needs, playing a key role in the creation of bioclimatic facades. By optimizing the management of light, sun and shade in buildings, Somfy solutions actively improve the health and well-being of users, while also reducing energy consumption from HVAC and lighting.

Benefits of Somfy solutionsThe Somfy animeo KNX motor controllers will make use of the Somfy animeo KNX external weatherstations to measure solar radiation and give real-time data readings. Combined with the artificial lighting and HVAC systems, the Somfy animeo KNX will position the shades in such a way as to:1. Control glare, contrast and daylight levels, thus ensuring visual comfort for students. The lux levels

considered by Somfy in the design are based on the upper limits recommended by LEED and the IESNA (Illuminating Engineering Society of North America) Indoor Lighting Recommendations.

2. Creating a synergy with the artificial lighting system to allow more daylight in while maintaining the recommended lux levels inside the rooms. The management of natural and artificial light will lead to energy savings from lighting.

3. Blocking long wave radiation (infrared) in order to significantly improve thermal comfort and therefore energy savings from HVAC.

The BuildingLocated on the University of Oregon campus, this newly built academic facility for student athletes is a three-storey 40,000 square foott building full of natural light.

Initial BriefThe Academic Center’s double-skin facade is made entirely of glass. The building’s cubic steel and glass structure is created using a ventilated double skin glass exterior. Floor-to-ceiling vision glass allows natural daylight to flood the interior space and a stainless steel screen forms a layer within the glass cavity.

Somfy solutionsFloor-to-ceiling Draper solar shades were motorized with 138 LT50 ILT 2 motors, installed on the exterior of the inner glass facade. The sunshades are controlled via the Somfy Digital Network (SDN) system.

Benefits of Somfy solutionsExternally, the stainless-steel screen provides privacy for users; internally, there is complete visualtransparency with views over the landscape and gardens. The double skin wraps a blanket of warm air around the building and mitigates the highs and lows of temperature fluctuations. This insulating facade also provides superior acoustics, helping create an atmosphere conducive to study and learning. LED lamps at the base of the outside wall illuminate the exterior at night, turning the skin into a translucent glowing box.

The BuildingThe Engineering Tower (TI) represents an effort by the UNAM to strengthen collaborative activitieswith the manufacturing, social and service sectors in order to foster technological development. The TI is therefore involved in developing research projects and providing technical assistance with sponsorship from industry, while also participating in social- and service-sector activities by providing high-level technical training.

Initial BriefThe aim was to produce a well-insulated building with a natural ventilation system, so that no air conditioning system would need to be implemented.

Somfy solutionsThe external roller blinds on the terraces are motorized with Somfy motors and automated. This automated solar protection system provides the building with a wide range of applications, such as an immediate response to changing weather conditions through sun sensors, and the simultaneous opening and closing of all curtains at a scheduled time. The occupation of the building can therefore be more effectively organized according to the weather.

Benefits of Somfy solutionsEnergy savings by using natural ventilation and a fully automated control system based on the temperature inside the building and the dynamic behaviour of the climate outside.

The BuildingThe opening of the Faculty of Business and Economics building is a milestone for the University of Melbourne on its journey to becoming a world leader in sustainable practice in the education sector. This state-of-the-art building has been awarded a 5-Star Green Star – Education Pilot rating by the Green Building Council of Australia.

Initial BriefA key factor taken into consideration by the GBCA Green Star – Education Pilot tool is high indoor environmental quality. A fully automated, centrally controlled, motorized solar-shading and glare-control solution with local switching is a requisite for effective daylight management, and thus for indoor environmental quality.

Somfy solutionsA Somfy animeo IB+ Premium solution controls over 500 motorized internal blinds in 10 zonesacross the facade of the building. Users have local switch points connected directly to the Somfy animeo motor controllers. Automated control is managed using sun sensors, timers and building resets.

Benefits of Somfy solutionsSomfy animeo offers a proven track record with an ‘off-the-shelf’ solution that is easy to use andprogram. Key to the decision to work with Somfy on the project was the support offered by Somfy from the planning stage right through to the installation and commissioning of the system. A post-occupancy study one year later demonstrated a 46% reduction in electricity consumption when compared to other typical tertiary education facilities.

The BuildingThe building is equipped with a double-skin facade with a 60 cm space between the two walls. The outer skin is composed of a full-height glass facade with air inlet and outlet valves, as well as external blinds. On the south facade, sensors positioned every two storeys are used to divide the building’s height into three.

Initial BriefThe architects wanted to integrate the building and its extension into the immediate surroundings, shaped by the river, the linearity of the docks and the alignment of trees in the area. Centralized management enables better thermal comfort but is also an aesthetic asset: sunscreens, coupled with the automated ventilation valves, actively participates in the architectural project, setting the building in motion while respecting its linear nature.

Somfy solutionsMotorized valves help to maintain the double skin at an appropriate temperature. The blinds move up and down automatically, depending on the sun. The installation was organized in such a way as to connect the air outlet valves and the blinds (which are in the same cavity) to the same system box. The air inlet valves are connected to another bus line. To simplify the installation, Somfy proposed the implementation of an «engine addressing system” to drive each output unit separately.

Benefits of Somfy solutionsThe system boxes are easy to install and electric wiring needs are reduced. The set-up is flexible. At any time, it is possible to modify or refine the programming using a computer, in accordance with changes to the building’s function or users’ needs. Centralized management of the blinds and ventilation valves makes for more effective management of temperatures and solar gains in the building.

The BuildingThe Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital is one of the most prestigious and internationally renownedprivate hospitals in Hong Kong. Wide windows are standard; in addition, the deluxe wards have views over the landscape and nearby horse-racing courses. They need roller blinds to deflect sunlight without affecting the view.

The BuildingThe tower is an expansion of the existing facilities for one of the best private hospitals in Brazil. The building will have 88 fully automated rooms, ensuring patients’ comfort.

Initial BriefThe owner was looking for a solution to motorize the aluminium external roller shutters and to allowpatients to control these shutters without leaving their bed.

Somfy solutionsSomfy’s Altus tubular motors satisfy the owner’s needs, and provide two ways for patients to activate the roller shutters: the first using Centralis RTS controls, and the second via a centralized controller that activates the TV, lighting, and the roller shutters using Somfy’s dry-contact interfaces.

The BuildingThe blind controls formed a significant part of the project’s strategy for passing the local building regulations, as they control the build-up of solar radiation. The system included sun tracking control, which was implemented by the TAC engineers using the Somfy animeo LON motor controller.

Somfy solutionsSomfy animeo LON 4AC motor controllers were used, due to the fact that TAC was supplying the BMS, which used a LON network. It was obvious that using the Somfy LON system would be ideal for this building.

Benefits of Somfy solutionsThe Somfy solution’s open-bus system suited the Skanska and TAC system design. The solution proposed by Somfy was also compatible with the BMS supplied by TAC.

The BuildingLocated in the heart of Singapore’s renowned shopping district, this building is a high-end residential development by Capitaland Singapore. Each bathroom unit in this luxury condominium complex is equipped with motorized roller blinds to allow users to either enjoy the magnificent view of the shopping district or opt for privacy when needed.

Initial BriefTo provide motorized blinds in the bathroom for solar shading, comfort and privacy.

Somfy solutionsA group-control system using Somfy Radio Technology was proposed for this project. The Somfy animeo 4AC motor controller was suggested for its better cost savings and ease of installation.

The Buildingscheduled to open in the first quarter of 2010, the 5-star deluxe Hotel JAL Tower Dubai will be situated in a premium location on Sheikh Zayed Road, opposite the Dubai World Trade Centreand Dubai International Convention Centre, with easy access to the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC). It will have 471 rooms.

Initial BriefTo enhance the window coverings in the hotel’s rooms using motorized solutions. The client waslooking for systems that could provide guests with an unforgettable experience during their stay, as well as being durable in terms of both the system and the professional local support available (in order to save time for the hotel operator and the management team should any problem arise).

Somfy solutionsTo meet the project specifications and the client’s requirements, Somfy proposed the Glystro®

curtain-track system and the ILT Ariane motor. The solutions were approved by the client and the project team, after testing them in mock-up rooms and making sure that Somfy Gulf could provide the necessary level of support.

Initial BriefThe club wanted to be able to completely block out natural light to ensure the guests’ privacy and provide greater relaxation. Somfy suggested black-out curtains to meet this requirement with a touch of luxury.

The BuildingThe chapel is a new building to the rear of the existing hotel, facing the beach. One of thefacades is fully glazed and directly facing the sun.

Initial BriefOptimum solar protection. Due to a sloping facade, the installer needed to choose a PVC-based fabric to minimize stretching. A special bottom bar was also made (weighing some 40 kg) to guarantee the fabric tension.

Somfy solutionsTo respond to our customer’s needs, Altus 50 40/17 was selected to carry those heavy blinds. Choosing Altus motors also enables easier grouping with our radio transmitter (Radio Technology Somfy).

The BuildingPangu 7-star hotel is the only hotel located in the Olympic Village. It gained recognition and a very good reputation during the 2008 Games in Beijing.

The BuildingThe hotel is located in the heart of the city, in the CBD (central business district), with a lot of high-rise buildings nearby. Almost all the facades are overlooked by other buildings.

Initial BriefThe hotel requested motorized blinds to cover the windows, next to the bathtub in the bathroom.The system (including the motors and controllers) also had to be safe for installation and use in bathrooms, which by nature become humid and/or wet.

Somfy solutionsAfter discussing the options with Somfy’s technical team, the decision was taken to use a Somfy DC motor with a DC switch in each room. The switch is installed near the bathtub, allowing guests to lower the blinds for privacy.

The blinds work in conjunction with the BMS to reduce the load on the cooling system. There is a strategic format for blind logic depending on the time of year and meteorological conditions.

Somfy solutionsThe solution provided by Somfy was a KNX system which runs over IP. The system included sun tracking and shadow control, as well as solar radiation sensors which control the activation of sun tracking and shadow management. The system has a great deal of control logic, including a 30-minute blind override option if certain external thresholds are met.

The BuildingCommercial Building - LEED Gold certificationThe Telus Tower is an AAA 30-storey office building located in the heart of downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada, at 25 York Street, with 780,000 sq ft (72,464 m2), of office space. The project was developed by Menkes Union Tower Ltd, a joint-venture partnership between Menkes Developments Ltd, Hospitals of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP) and Alcion Ventures, and designed by Adamson Architects with support from Sweeny Sterling Finlayson & Company. The building houses an advanced heating and cooling system delivered via a raised-floor distribution network that should reduce energy costs by up to 25%. A built-in cistern collects and recycles rainwater for use in non-drinking-water systems. Floor-to-ceiling clear glazed windows allow more natural light penetration into the workplace environment. Additional energy-saving measures include high-performance windows and high-efficiency lighting systems. In addition, Solarfective Products of Ontario, Canada was commissioned to manufacture and install internal solar screens and light shelves on 17 floors of the Telus Towers. The solar screens and light shelves utilize 600 ILT2 motors, controlled via SDN (Somfy Digital Network). The tower was completed in November 2009. Telus Tower received the ‘Best Office Development’ award.

It is close to Prague–Ruzyn_ International Airport, and offers excellent visibility for the individual buildings of this project from the surrounding infrastructure. City West consists of seven administrative buildings housing a total of 100,000 sq m of office and retail space, divided into three phases: A, B and C. The first phase, Phase B, completed in the first half of 2010, comprises three buildings: B1, B2 and B3. Buildings B2 and B3 are already fully leased by the international group Siemens.

The BuildingA total of 5.0 billion dirham has been invested in this prestigious development that is set to put Abu Dhabi on the international financial map. The project consists of four luxury high-rise office towers, comprising 285,000 sq m of dedicated office space, and a stock-exchange building. Towers 1 and 2 have 33 floors each, while Towers 3 and 4 have 38 floors. The four towers have double-skin facades where 100 mm external venetian blinds (EVBs) are to be installed. The double skin has a catwalk system with 750 mm mechanical ventilation. In addition to the automated external venetian blinds, Towers 3 and 4 have automated external louvers, while Towers 1 and 2 have fixed louvres. The blinds are the responsibility of the facade contractor, while the controls are the responsibility of the main contractor. The towers are expected to obtain LEED Gold certification.

Initial BriefThe aim of adopting controllable solar shading systems is to enable the building to «react» to changes in the weather and the sun’s position to optimize the flows of heat and light through the facade. This, in turn, may have a positive effect on reducing heat gain and glare, and enhancing the use of natural daylight, thereby reducing the building’s operating costs.

The BuildingA small commercial building (633 m2) that is exemplary in terms of energy savings; the building has obtained Minergie/HQE certification.

Initial BriefThe main request was that the building should be a showcase in terms of fully eco-friendly architecture. The design of this building in based on simple construction principles and uses materials and equipment available on the market. The building is designed to be reproducible in all its principles, for any type of use. It also benefits from HQE and Minergie-P-Eco certifications.

Somfy solutionsThe Somfy animeo IB+ Premium system was proposed in order to allow the automation of the blinds, which move according to the position of the sun.

Benefits of Somfy solutionsThe optimization of the motorized external blinds using the Somfy animeo system allows for greater control over solar gains. The automatic management of the blinds enhances the diffusion of natural light in order to avoid most artificial lighting. This solution enables users to customize the orientation of their blinds and manage scenarios, e.g. a winter scenario to benefit from solar gains and limit the use of additional heating sources, or a summer scenario to minimize the U and G factors of the various glass windows.

The BuildingThis building houses the centralized control station for Rhine/Rhône TGV (high-speed rail) traffic. This 4,400 sq m building, with 588 m2 of photovoltaic solar panels on the roof, presents a degree of architectural complexity with its large glass surfaces

Initial BriefThe main brief given was to improve users’ thermal and visual comfort by minimizing the use of artificial light in work spaces and promoting natural light. Automation was requested in order to manage luminosity so as to avoid direct sunlight and glare for the operators who work on computers.

Somfy solutionsThe Somfy animeo IB+ Premium solution was adapted perfectly to the owner’s needs. The rain, wind (speed and direction) and temperature sensors installed on the roof ensure the blinds are protected in the event of bad weather.

Benefits of Somfy solutionsThis solution enables the simple management and maintenance of blinds, thanks in part to specific software installed on the computers. The automatic management of the blinds means that greater energy savings to be made, while at the same time improving users’ visual comfort. The RTS (Radio Technology Somfy) local command solution allows individual users to control the orientation of their blinds with precision, using the Telis remote control wheel.

• An international five-year guaranteeThe BuildingThis was the first French commercial building to acquire High Environmental Quality (HQE) certification. In each office, priority is given to natural lighting. A single, multipurpose electrical column was installed to control and regulate lighting. The ceilings are reflective and radiating.The blinds are automatically managed.

Initial BriefThe main objective was to obtain HQE certification with a 50% reduction in energy consumption. The decision was taken to recover rainwater in order to supply irrigation, car-park cleaning and sanitary reservoirs; this should cover 30% of the building’s non-drinking-water needs.

Somfy solutionsSomfy’s animeo AC and DC motor controller solution was proposed, together with an anemometer and sun sensors, two building controllers to manage the building’s 16 zones, and animeo IB+ Premium supervision software.

Benefits of Somfy solutionsThe Somfy animeo Premium solution helps to manage the solar gain in winter in order to reduce heating costs; the solution also makes it possible to use smart solar protection in the summer to avoid the excessive use of artificial cooling. The system also incorporates lighting management in the offices. If there is too much wind, the screens are retracted, thus maximizing the lifespan of the blinds. Through the use of equipment that combines high comfort levels with respect for the environment, this building was able to meet the standards necessary for HQE (High Environmental Quality) certification.
