Bill Leger and Tony Matkulak celebrate their Comstock Cup win with a quick dip in the lake. Congratulations to them both!

This space in the newsletter is normally reserved for the GM report from Anna Durst, but she has graciously offered to allow me a parting message after nearly five years of service on your board. It’s

a chance to voice what many of you would say if you were given a similar opportunity. Stephanie Hanna and Elizabeth White will also be leaving the board following the Annual Meeting and election on August 18th. The next time you see them at the Club, buy them a drink and offer a sincere thank you for their work, I promise you they will appreciate it!

The past few years have not been easy ones for the local golf business but there is something quite special about Somersett that has allowed us to steer well clear of the disastrous endings for some courses and what I would call the “death spiral” that some others may very well be in now. We

have a very smart group of staff people and a membership with a great ability to face the facts and make a decision. It’s not that common.

The task remains to fill the Club ultimately with members and to have a waiting list to get in. If only the people who are not members knew what Sheri and I know, there would be a substantial list waiting already. The Club, to our family, is really the people, the friends we’ve made, the trips we’ve taken with fellow members, the unbelievable support we feel as life happens with aging parents, kids unplanned visits to emergency rooms, whenever we need a product or service or anything at all…you name it, we can ALWAYS count on fellow club members to be there and I want you all to know that it matters in a very significant way to our entire family. We are so grateful and we are blessed to have been here for the past six years. This is home for Ally and Megan, it’s where they grew up and the people here will always be in our family memories. I feel sorry for anyone who misses an experience like this because they still haven’t figured out yet that “cost per round” at a Club is, counter intuitively, nearly irrelevant.

The staff. I don’t have enough space. Thank you. All of you. You know who you are and the countless acts of kindness that you have bestowed on our family. This Club, as great as it is, will only ever be as good as you are. Pretty darn good right now.

Now, if I could just hit it a little straighter, a lot farther and make a few more of those 15 footers when it matters….
