Dear Members, Volunteers, Staff and Friends,

“Pay it Forward” describes the essence of how doing good for others will bring twice as much good to you. At the Somerset Valley YMCA, we are paying it forward every day. From the children who attend our camps to the teens at Planet Y, from the athletes on our swim and gymnastic teams to the families at our Halloween parties, from the adults in our fitness center to the seniors in our pool, we thrive on giving back to the community. So much of these daily happenings could not be realized without the graciousness of you, our members. The Y’s three areas of focus are youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. We are proud to say that in 2011, we elevated our dedication to social responsibility or, as you can see from the above, we’re paying it forward.

Social responsibility is about being there for the community, reaching out to provide service to others and collaborating with other groups and organizations in an effort to double our impact. In 2011, two natural disasters hit our area, a hurricane and an early season snow storm. Both of these rocked our communities with floods and power outages. During these crises, our Y’s kept their doors open as a place for all in the community to get warm, shower or just socialize. Yes, we are a membership organization, but in times like these, we must remember that we are also a community organization, thus membership will not be a barrier to service for anyone. So much of the giving that we do is inspired by the giving that you do. Paying it forward also means furthering collaborations with other entities such as Middle Earth, Carrier Clinic, Empower Somerset and many other governmental and non-profit organizations.

In 2012, look to see more of us “outside our four walls.” There is a saying that every community gets the Y it deserves. We hope that after more than 125 years, we are more deserving of your attention than ever and we thank you for your dedication, loyalty and passion to not only helping yourself, but others as well. We hope you will continue to see a Y that acts only in superior service to you, the Somerset Valley community.

All the best, Andrea Thorne, Board Chairman Paul Kieltyka, Chief Executive Officer

BuILDING STRONG FAMILIES “My kids are extremely active and the Somerset

Valley Y camp was the first place that ever satisfied them for an entire day. They swam, they played outdoors and went on trips. They had fun. I especially liked the diversity. When my kids got to the Y, they just clicked with the other kids.”

“After I returned to work last year, my husband and I chose the Y when we needed summer care for our children, ages 6 to 11. Of all the options we considered, it was the best. My kids loved their summer camp experience. They told me they want to go back.”

Cicely and her children

For more than a century, strengthening communities has been our cause at the Somerset Valley Y. Each day, we carry out our mission of nurturing the potential of children, promoting health and well-being and supporting our neighbors.

Our numbers tell part of the story. In 2011, nearly 300 children a week enjoyed our child care services, while 1,100 attended our summer camp programs. Through our Strong Kids fundraising campaign, we provided reduced-price memberships to 450 people to give them a path to healthier living. We offered camp scholarships to 100 children and child care assistance to 60.

Our neighbors and members, who we were privileged to help and support, tell the rest of the Y story.

“I was always active and hard-working. Then one evening, everything came to a screeching halt. I could not walk and had excruciating back pain. My days were spent in a chair. A year ago, when my daughter gave me a two-month Somerset Valley Y gift certificate, I cried. Here was a chance to keep my physical and emotional well-being intact.”

“From the time I walked in the door at the Hillsborough Y, I was treated with respect from the staff. I started with a fitness class and had a great teacher. I took advantage of the hot tub and the therapy pool. When I’m in the pool, I let gravity do its thing. No pain - what a wonderful feeling! I’m thankful I was able to continue my membership. It has changed my life.”

Deborah

“I first began going to the Somerset Valley Y 14 years ago with my son, who is autistic. The Y bent over backwards to accommodate him. Two years ago, when I weighed 220 pounds and needed to get in shape, the Y helped me. The staff encouraged me and pushed me to work out.”

“I started walking and lifting weights. I lost 70 pounds.”

“A friend wrote about me to Dr. Oz and I went on his TV show. I feel my whole outlook has changed. Thanks to the Y, I have been able to maintain my fitness. It’s nice knowing help is out there.”

You may not know it, but you are already making a difference in the life of your neighbor. Your gift creates opportunities every day. Someone who might have felt alone is now inspired because their quest for a connected and healthy life was heard.

Their first step into the Y will put them on a path to a lifestyle that will give them and others in their family a new way to approach the day and a chance to grow and thrive as a person, as a family and as a member of our community.

Lasting change can only come about when we work together to invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors.
