Somerset Berkley Regional High School. Robotics Engineering with LabView. 1. Engineering Design - PowerPoint PPT Presentation
Citation preview
1. Engineering DesignCentral Concepts: Engineering design involves practical problem solving, research, development, and invention/innovation, and requires designing, drawing, building, testing, and redesigning. Students should demonstrate the ability to use the engineering design process to solve a problem or meet a challenge.
Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006
1.1 Identify and explain the steps of the engineering design process: identify the problem, research the problem, develop possible solutions, select the best possible solution(s), construct prototypes and/or models, test and evaluate, communicate the solutions, and redesign.

Step 1Identify the
problem
Student – student directed project: design a robot that keeps its balance on two wheels, like a segway.
Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006
Step 2Research the
problem
Explore other options via the internetStudent: List the internet sites that were helpful.Site 1Youtube.comSite 2 nxtprograms.comSite 3 active-robots.com
What did you learn from your research?A we can only use ev3 robotsB balancing the robot is importantC need a gyro sensor

Step 3Develop solutions BRAINSTORM
COLLABORATION
Student : Share your ideas with your design team. List your ideas below.
1.Need a perfectly balanced robotic 2.Need the correct gyro boy program 3. Need a stabilizing bar for the first prototype
Step 4Select the best
Possible solution(s)
Student: The key to this design is in the program. The program has to be perfect and use a gyro sensor to properly work. The bot also has to be perfectly weighted and balanced.
Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006
The Somerset Berkley writing rubric will be used for assessment.
Student : Our first prototype has 4 wheels underneath the actual nxt itself. It has two motors on each side that spin to keep it balanced. The gyro sensor is placed near the top of the bot and is held upright, level to the ground.
Step 5Construct a prototype
Build a robot with your NXT lego kitCreate a computer program for your robot.
Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006
Use the next slide(s) for the digital pictures of your prototypes and computer programs.
Step 6Test and Evaluate
the solution(s)
1. Does your robot work? yes2. Did it perform as expected? Needs minor adjustments3. What changes are necessary for the robot and the program? Balance
changes4. Does it meet the original design constraints? yes5. Is it safe? yes6. Lab work- Modify your robot project and use the next slide to post a picture of your improved robot project.

Step 7Communicate the solution(s)
Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006
Provide the YouTube link of your video that showshow your robot meets the challenge.

Redesign
Overhaul the solution(s) based on information gatheredduring testing and self-assessment activity.
