Dear parents and carers, On the back of this

letter is a copy of the term dates for the next academic year, 2017-2018. We have communicated with both Dyson Perrins and The Chase to ensure the main school holidays fall at the same time. Term dates for Malvern Vale Primary School will be exactly the same. A copy of the PDF is available on the school website.

Year 5 @Bristol

Staffing update In Reception, Mrs Cole, who has been on maternity leave since the Summer Term, has made the decision not to return her post as class teacher and Early Years Leader. May I take this opportunity to thank Mrs Cole for all that she has done at Somers Park since 2007, as we wish her the very best of luck for the future. As a result, I am pleased to confirm that Mrs Price, who has been teaching in Reception as maternity cover this year, has been appointed to replace Mrs Cole. Mrs Simpson will continue in the Early Years Leadership role.

RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch As part of the Year 2 topic work on Playground Wildlife, Year 2 will be taking part in the Big Garden Birdwatch on 30th January. We’re looking forward to finding out which birds use our school grounds!

Year 5 visit to @Bristol On Thursday 19th January, our Year 5 children travelled to Bristol to visit the @Bristol Science museum for the day- it sounds like they had fun!

“The 3D planetarium was incredible. It looked like a ginormous disco ball when we drove up to it and we got to sit inside. The screen was curved and went right over our heads. It showed us the planets and stars in the solar system. It felt like we were really moving - like we were really in space!" Year 5 children.

"It was amazing! They showed us how to explore the different mechanics of being in space because there is no gravity." William, 5D.

Year 5 @Bristol

"We learnt how astronauts exercise in space by being strapped down so they don’t float off! I also learnt that there are several more dwarf planets in our solar system." Olivia, 5D

"We got to use virtual reality headsets, make animated videos and weather forecasts. It was cool. The best part was going through astronaut training. We learnt how to use a robotic arm and even found the most absorbent material to make space nappies... it was magic snow, by the way!" Georgia, 5C

Animation with Shaun the Sheep @Bristol

"All the staff were really nice and helped us learn loads about space. In three words: awesome, educational and mind-blowing. I would recommend it to EVERYONE!" Riley, 5C

Year 3 Geologist visit “On Thursday afternoon Year 3 had a visit from a Doctor of geology! He showed us lots and lots of different rocks and told us where they came from. He also told us how rocks come into all areas of our lives as well as what his work involves. We had many questions and learned a lot to help our Science work.” Year 3

Wonderful Wraparound! “Last week in after-school club, we made some icy winter sun mosaics. Here are a few example of some of the beautiful art work produced”.

Our successful netball team.

Nifty Netball! ‘On Monday 16th January 2017, our Year 6 netball team (Izzy, Molly, Ethan, Leela, Joseph, Madeleine, Naomi and Dilys) took part in Dyson Perrins CofE Academy netball tournament. The teams competing were: Northleigh, Powick, St James, Suckley, St Matthias and Leigh and Bransford. In the first match, we played against a very good team, who were very challenging, however we managed to win 2-0. In the next game played a great team, who were year fours and we beat them 5-0. After we played a very strong team (our biggest rivals at tournaments) and managed to win 2-0. We won the next match 12-0! Our final match was against the best team yet, who were amazing, but we beat them 5-1. Overall, we only let 1 goal in the whole tournament and scored 31 goals. The best thing we did was shooting, Ethan was our star shooter although as he reminded us: ‘There is no I in team!’’

Fantastic football On Tuesday, Year 4, 5 and 6 went to Dysons to take part in the football tournament.

The schools competing were: St Matthias, Kempsey A and B teams, Great Malvern, Powick, Northleigh, and of course Somers Park Blues and Somers Park Golds.

Somers Park Blues: The blue team was made up of Chester (4W), Hugh (6M), Lucas (6M), Callum (6M), Ben (6M), George (5C), Josh (6M) and Bobby (6E). Our first match was 0-0, second 0-0, third 1-0 to the opposition and finally, 3-0 to us (our scorers were Ben, George and Bobby). Josh, our keeper, made some excellent saves which kept us in the game.

Somers Park Golds: The gold team was made up of Taylor (6M), Toby (6M), Callum (6M), Freddie (5C), Evan (5C), Thomas (5C), Sam (5C), Will (4E), Will (5D), and Kevin (6E). Our first match was 0-0, our second 2-1 to the opposition, our third 3-0 to the opposition and finally it was 1-0 to us. Evan scored a magnificent goal with his chest from a cross by Freddie. As well as Josh, Sam made some fantastic saves to keep a clean sheet in our final game.

Overall, it was a highly enjoyable tournament and we would like to thank Dysons for organising the event.’
