Muriel Smith | Executive Director | De La Salle
A NEW YEAR WITH NEW BEGINNINGSI am excited and honored to join the De La Salle family as the new Executive Director. I want to thank everyone for your warm welcome.
With the 2017-18 fiscal year behind us, we are enthusiastic about our new beginning. I owe a huge thank you to the Board of Directors and committed staff for making this transition seamless.
Before I joined De La Salle, I attended a STAR lunch and was astounded at the presence of the students who greeted me at the door. They showed such grace and maturity, that I wish I had at their age! I listened to students speak about their experience at La Salle Middle School and how they had grown since the start of school. It was magnificent to see how proud they were of their own growth and how happy their classmates were for the STAR Student of the Year. Our core values of care, community and zeal were on full display from the students to the staff to the guests in the room. It made me feel honored to be part of something this special.
Since then, I have have the opportunity to get to know several students and graduates. And I can truly say that the education and support we have provided truly makes the difference.
With thanks and appreciation,
I AM INCLUSIVITY MISSION & PURPOSE

OUR METHODDe La Salle works in partnership with La Salle Middle School to prepare our students for lives of significance and service to others. Through a highly individualized approach, we work with each student and their family to identify and reach their personal educational goals; to be prepared to find meaningful work; and to enter adulthood as inspired change agents and leaders.
Our Lasallian charism calls us to honor the brilliance and unique potential in each student. At our school, you’ll often hear the words “I Am Somebody.” This sums up our core values – we believe that each person has intrinsic value and uniquely contributes to the good of the whole. These values guide our work from middle school through post-secondary completion.

EnCompass is a comprehensive and multi-layered system of services, programs, and supports designed to ensure long term success for students and graduates of La Salle Middle School. Through an extended school day and year model, plus ongoing mentoring, advising, and programming support we endeavor to transform the lives of our students through a holistic approach to exploration, education, and community connection. Partners include: COCA, Ignite Theatre, YMCA, SpringBoard and Oxygen Project.
LEARNING THROUGH SERVICEWe challenge our students to demonstrate faith in action through service learning opportunities. De La Salle offers a variety of service-oriented activities that enrich our students’ educational experience while meeting real needs in the community.
Projects are designed to develop students’ sense of social and personal responsibility and to recognize their potential as change agents. Some examples include: 7th and 8th graders went to Our Lady’s Inn, a shelter for pregnant women, to help organize and wrap Christmas gifts. Students also went to 104.1 to do a presentation on depression, highlighting the leadership program. Annually, our students participate in World Food Day to package nutritious food items to be dispersed locally and around the world.

IN HER WORDSHow have you grown from the 6th grade until now? I have experienced different things. Everything my teachers taught me prepared me for 8th grade and I feel like I can apply it all to my life.
What’s your favorite thing about La Salle? If I have a problem, there is always someone to talk to that cares about my education. When I don’t understand my work, my teachers break it down for me.
Who is your favorite teacher/staff member? Ms. Halliday. She always encourages me and I get a really good vibe from her. I can tell her anything, I view her as like a second mother.
What do you want to be when you grow up? An entrepreneur.

Catch A Rising Star GalaApri l 28, 2019
@ The Palladium2018 CATCH A RISING STAR GALANearly 250 guests gathered at the Palladium to celebrate our students, graduates, and mission at our annual Catch A Rising Star on April 28, 2017.
This year’s honorees highlight De La Salle’s long-term commitment to our students and their families. Melissa Brickey, former executive director and founder of the Graduate Support program, and Maryville University, with its financial, academic, and social commitment to first generation college students were awarded De La Salle’s Guiding Star.
Also featured was De La Salle graduate and cu0rrent Maryville University student, Jay,la S. Guests were treated to a transformational story from Jay’la and her mother about the support De La Salle has offered during our multi-year relationship.
Through the generosity of our many guests, we raised over $250,000 to continue those relationships with many more families.
Throughout her 14 years with De La Salle, Melissa infused a spirit of love into our mission. From the creation of our wildly
successful Graduate SupportProgram to becoming its Executive Director, Melissa has been directly involved with more than 300 young people, staff and donors, who are all better because of it.

SUMMER SCHOLARS PROGRAMThis past summer, sixty rising juniors and seniors in high school arrived on Saint Louis University’s campus Summer Scholars. This week-long program is sponsored by De La Salle Inc. and this year was the ninth consecutive year. Graduates from De La Salle, Marian, St. Cecilia’s, Most Holy Trinity, St. Louis the King, and Loyola Middle Schools gathered to learn about the college search and application process.
The students, affectionately called “scholars”, stay in a dormitory, receive a campus tour, use the recreation center, learn how to dress for success, learn how to manage their mental health, and reflect on their days with Resident Advisors. These RAs are former program participants who are currently enrolled in a four-year institution. Also, students have six hours of ACT boot camp, workshops on financial aid and advocacy, and a college fair with local universities.
De La Salle Inc. was fortunate to collaborate with the Scholarship Foundation of St. Louis, Study Smart Tutors, Prosper STL, Wells Fargo, US Bank, Energizer, Monsanto, and Boys Hope Girls Hope.

“The Summer Scholars program was one of the best experiences
I've had in my life. [...] I think it's really
awesome that we took classes to help us with the ACT, it is going to
be very helpful."

I AM GIVING TIME
Dave Costigan, better known as Dr. Dave to students and staff, has been a La Salle Middle School volunteer for two years. Dr. Dave is a retired physician, volunteering with La Salle from the IVC group (Ignatian Volunteer Corps), a Jesuit program designed for retired or semi-retired adults wanting to make a difference in their local community.
Dr. Dave has made a major impact. He is always willing to help out in any way he can. You can often find Dr. Dave tutoring in math classes, helping out in the library and the main office, or just simply walking the halls gracing each student and staff member with a smile and maybe even a quick joke or two. Dr. Dave often mentions how coming to La Salle and working with our students makes him a better individual. What he doesn’t know is that he impacts each one of our lives the moment he walks through the doors. We are grateful and blessed to have Dr. Dave with us.
