Some Trematodes of Fishes from the Central Equatorial Pacific EDWIN S. IV ERSEN l and EARL E. HOVEN 2 THIS R EPORT is based on a collection of trem at odes from marine fishes captured in the vicinity of the Line Islands. All the trem atode species listed are believed to constitute first records from this area, and some are first re- ports from new host s. Collections were made in 1955 during exploratory tuna fishin g by trolling and longlining. These fishing surveys were carried out by Pacific Oceanic Fishery Investigations (POFI), a branch of the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, as one phase of a program designed to determine the distribu- tion and abundance of tuna s in the Pacific. The Line Islands from wh ich this material was collected are: Christmas, Fanning, Wash- ing ton, and Palmyra islands, and Kingman Reef. Theyexten d in a nort hwesterly direction from 2 0 N. latitude, 157 0 W. lo ngitude to 6 0 N . latitu de, 163 0 W. longitu de. All specimens, exce pt the hemiurids, were identified th rough the kind efforts of Dr. Harold W. Manter, Department of Zoology, University of Neb raska. Unf ortunatel y facili- ties were not available aboard ship for pro per preservation of such material; as a result many of the specimens were identified with diffi- :ulty and some could not be accurately iden- tified . DISCUS SI ON: Since the se parasites are lo- cated between the gill filaments, they are found only by rather close scrutiny. Other dut ies while at sea prevented a careful record of the number of infected fish. The number of worms per host is prob ably large and the rate of infestati on high. Hargis (1956), who has erected the genus Neo tho racocotyle, re- ported the new combination . THIS REPORT is based on a collection oftrem atodes from marine fishes captured in thevicinity of the Line Islands. All the trematodespecies listed are believed to constitute firstrecords from th is area, an d some are first re­ports from new hosts. DISCUSSION: Since these parasites are lo­cated be tween the gi ll filaments, th ey arefou nd only by rath er close scru tiny . Hargis (1956), whohas erected the genus Neothoracocotyle, re­ported the new combination.

DISCUSSION : The copepod involved in thepresen t record is Elytrophora sp. A comparisonof these host records is of particular interes tbecause the trematode is a hyperparasite andbecause in each collection both the copepodhosts are caligid copepods and the fish hostsare closely related.

SYNONYMS: Nigrelli and Stunkard (1947)include a very lengthy list of possible syno­nyms of this species.

HOST: Yellowfin tuna, Neothunnus macrop­teras (Temminck and Schlegel).

LOCATION : In stomach.LOCALITY: 060 20' N ., 1620 30 ' W. (vicinity

of Kingman Reef).PREVIOUSLY REPORTED HOSTS AND LOCALI­

T IES: Nigrelli and Stunkard (1947) include along list of hosts, mostly of scombriformfishes, including N. macropterus from C. SanLucas, Lower California, Pacific.

DISCUSSION: In the course of the examina­tio n of stomach contents of yellowfin andbigeye tuna from the central Pacific, King andIkehara (1956) encountered large musculartrematodes. They report an infection rate of32 per cent for 166 bigeye and 26 per cent forth e 439 yellowfin they examined. Since Ni­grelli and Stunkard recognize on ly two spe­cies of Hirudinella, one in the wahoo, H.ventricosa, and one in other hosts, H. marina,it is very likely that these worms belong tothe latter species .

- TIES: Acanthocybium solandri in the Atlan ticand Pacific; from the Pacific it has been re­ported from Panama, Mexico, Equador, andthe Marianas Islands (Nigrelli and Stunkard,1947).

DISCUSSION: Ni grelli and Stunkard (1947)have made a thorough study of this genus and

regard all Hirudinella reported from the wahooas belonging to a single species, H. ventricosaPallas . In an examination of 220 wahoo stom­achs from the Line Islands, Iversen and Y0­

shida (1957) found a 98.2 per cent infectionof these parasites. The hosts ranged in sizefrom 108 to 172 em. and as many as 17 ofthe worms were found in a single stomach,with 2 per host occurring most frequently.

H. ventricosa may be present elsewhere inthe Pacific, for Edmondson (1946) states inrespect to the Hawaiian region, that "An un­determined species of trematode commonlyoccurs in the stomach of the Ono, Acantho­cybium solandri (Cuvier). " These flukes wereabout 1 inch long when partially contracted.Kishinouye (1923) in speaking of wahoofrom Japan says "A large distomum, about8 em. in length, is almost always found in thestomach."

Concomitant studies of hosts and parasitesDISCUSSION: Of the 104 wahoo examined,

units. In this connection these records, es­pecially of Monogenea which are host speci­fic, are of interest . Capsala biparasitica fromyellowfin tu na in J apan and the Line Islands,Hexastoma grossum from bigeye in J apan andthe Line Islands, Neothoracocotyle acanthocybiifrom wahoo in the Line and Galapagos is­lands, and Capsalapoeyi from the black marlinin the Atlantic and Pacific, all suggest thatthese stocks of fish are not, or were not, com­pletely independent.
