On the Water

EXPLORE BERMUDA’S WRECKSDescend beneath the waves into a majestic underwater world.Bermuda has been widely recognized as the shipwreck capital of the Atlantic Ocean. It was once called the “Isle of Devils” for good reason—the deceptive and treacherous reefs around the island have led to many a ship’s sinking. Beneath its clear waters, you can dive, snorkel or simply skim over more than 300 sunken ships dating from the 1600s to 1997. If you haven’t checked wreck diving off your bucket list, now is the time. Explore the largely intact remains of ships like the Hermes and the Constellation, or glide above large sea fans and symmetrical brain coral at one of several nearby reefs.

GEORGEFounded in 1612, the Town of St. George, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the oldest continually inhabited English settlement in the New World. Day 2: BE ONE WITH NATURE

RIDE THE RAILS: THE BERMUDA RAILWAY TRAILSpend the morning taking a cycle ride filled with island history and rich, flora-filled landscapes along the beautiful railway trails that run the length of the island. EXPLORE: COOPER’S ISLAND NATURE RESERVEExplore 12 acres of pristine nature reserve to spot seabirds, giant land crabs and ancient Bermuda cedar trees on Cooper’s Island, at the southeastern tip of Bermuda. EAT: THE WORLD’S FINEST FISH SANDWICHIt’s served all over the world, but in Bermuda, the fish sandwich is a national obsession. Opinions vary, but many say that the island’s best can be found at Rosa’s.

Day 3: MAKING A SPLASH & SIPPING TEA

GOOD MORNING: THE CODFISH BREAKFASTOn weekend mornings, locals all over the island sit down for a hearty, classic codfish breakfast. It’s a heaping plateful of boiled or steamed salt cod with boiled potatoes, onions and sliced bananas topped off with a hard-boiled egg and, occasionally, avocado slices. GET WET: AQUATIC ADVENTURESThe sparkling turquoise ocean that surrounds Bermuda isn’t just mesmerizing to look at—the island is a serious sport fishing destination, with waters filled with big-game catches like marlin, tuna and wahoo. If deep sea fishing isn’t your thing, then hop aboard a jet ski to tour hidden coves and feed fish on a wreck in crystal clear waters. ROYAL TEA: TRADITIONAL AFTERNOON TEABermuda hits “pause” every day for that oh-so-British activity, traditional afternoon tea. One of the most popular spots for tea time is the Crown & Anchor at the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club. FRONT STREET NIGHTLIFEGrab a Dark ‘n Stormy® —one of the island’s signature drinks—and mingle with locals while bar hopping down Front Street enjoying a variety of live entertainment and local DJs along the way.
