176 THE IRISH- MONTHLY

Homeric " Death of Conlaoch," and dignity in the odes, but perhaps most admirable are the songs for their music and ethereal imagery. The poet is Irish, however, more in his subjects than in his style and spirit; his muse is calmly and meditatively rather than, like the distinctive Irish song, passionately sad. It was only after many years that he

discovered what poetic treasures are hidden in the older literature of Ireland.

Bye- Ways of Study. Bv Darrell Figgis. (The Talbot

Press.) 4s. 6d. n. Mr. Figgis has put together in this little volume four

essays. In the first, a review of Katherine O'Shea's Life of Parnell, he discusses some aspects and incidents of Par nell's career. The next two are literary; one on Francis Thompson and one George Meredith's Letters, well written pieces, but suffering from a tendency to obscurity of expres sion. The last easily surpasses the others in interest. It is a careful and able study of a document which Mr. Figgis came upon in the State Papers and which he found to con tain a set of articles presented to Essex in 1.599 by Hugh

O'Neill, perhaps our greatest Irish statesman, and stating the terms on which he conceived a peaceful settlement be tween Ireland and England might be based with safety to Ireland. It is a document of remarkable interest, both for itself and in relation to present-day proposals on the same

matter.
