Control Systems at KEK

- KEK PS Control System- TRISTAN Control System- Renewed KEK PS Control System- KEKB Control System

Page 3: Some Experiences on Choosing Standards at KEK

Standard used in PS Control System

- System Design started in 1972- Standards adopted- RS-232C

- Proprietary Systems- Network- Process Input/Output

Page 4: Some Experiences on Choosing Standards at KEK

Standards used in TRISTAN Control System

- Design started in 1981- Standards used- CAMAC Serial Highway(IEEE 596)- CAMAC Dataway(IEEE 483)- GPIB(IEEE 488)- MIL-1553B- RS-232C

- Proprietary System- Computer Network

Page 5: Some Experiences on Choosing Standards at KEK

Standards used in Second Generation PS Control System

- Renewal started in 1985- VMEbus(IEEE 1014)- Direct I/Os on VMEbus

- MAP(IEEE 801.4)- Broadband Token-Bus Network- CATV and Computer Network on one Coaxial

Cable

- GPIB(IEEE 488)- RS-232C

Standards in KEKB Control System

- Design Started 1993- VMEbus(IEEE 1014)- CAMAC(IEEE 596)- CAMAC(IEEE 483)- GPIB(IEEE 488)- FDDI- Ethernet(IEEE 801.2, 801.11)- 10 Base/T --> 100 Base/TX --> GbE

Life of the Accelerators

- KEK PS 30 years- TRISTAN 10 years- KEKB 10 - 20 years

Page 8: Some Experiences on Choosing Standards at KEK

Life of the Control Systems

- Electronic Equipment 10 - 20 years

- Consumer Electronics 7 years- Electronic Components10 - 20 years- IC’s(Supply) 20 years- Electrolytic Capacitors 10 years- Connectors

- VME Modules 10 years- Semiconductor Manufact. 5 years

Results of the Standards

- CAMAC(IEEE 483, IEEE 596)- Very simple and clear standard- Still widely used over the world- But careful design of the modules are req

uired- Parts especially SSI or MSI are obsolete

- VMEbus(IEEE 1014)- Very widely used- Will not be replaced by Compact PCI bus

Page 10: Some Experiences on Choosing Standards at KEK

Results of the Standard(2)

- MAP(IEEE 801.4)- Highly dependent on the automobile

industry(General Motors)- No second source of modules

- FDDI- It was a smart network standard- Expensive interface as ATM- Going to be obsolete in a few years- Replaced by Switched Ethernet

Page 11: Some Experiences on Choosing Standards at KEK

Results of the Standard(3)- GPIB(IEEE 488)- Widely used in Measuring Equipment- Optical Interface- Ethernet Interface- Behavior of the equipment is not always unpredi

ctable- Ethernet(IEEE 801.2, 801.11)- High Speed: 100 Base, Gb, 10 GbE- Wireless: 801.11a, 801.11b

- RS-232C, RS-485, RS-422/423- Physical Layer

How to Choose a Standard- Wait a little until the standard is widely

used.- A good standard is not always used

widely.- Don’t believe what a manufacturer

announces.- Check a module carefully before you

decide to use.- A manufacturer will never be your side

even if you are a good customer.

Standards that may be used Now

- Ethernet(IEEE 801.2, 801.11)- GbE, 100 Base/TX, 10 Base/T

- GPIB(IEEE 488)- You may use a GPIB equipment if it satisfi

es your requirements. Use with Ethernet.- CAMAC(IEEE 483, 596)- If you have already have CAMAC modules

- VME(IEEE 1014), VME64
