Parking Opinions SoughtPeople in Allerdale are being
asked for their opinions on car parking as a result of a petition presented to the Council.
The review aims to gather information on a number of issues and the cost of parking in Allerdale.
Councillor Trevor Fee, said: “The purpose of the survey is to find out what users of the parking facilities think of the car
parking provision in Allerdale. Parking is an important issue to many people who live and work in the borough and it also has an impact on those that choose to visit. We have launched an online survey to give people the chance to have their say. The results of the survey will be considered by members with other evidence, before any potential recommendations are
made. Returned surveys will be totally confidential”
The survey can be completed on Allerdale Borough Council’s website www.allerdale.gov.uk/parkingsurvey. You can also contribute to the review by contacting the Council on 01900 702559 or emailing your views to [email protected]. The survey will close on 11th February 2011.

On the 21st November the Mayor of Allerdale, Councillor Robert Hardon, invited several members of Silloth RNLI lifeboat crew and representatives of other rescue organisations to attend a Civic Service of Reconciliation at The Holy Trinity Church, Northside, Workington.
The service was to mark the first anniversary of the devastating floods in November 2009 and was attended by representatives of all those emergency services who so selflessly worked to help others during that difficult time.

some 50 metres from the spot where Constable Bill Barker tragically lost his life, and stands within the community that was cut off from the rest of Workington.
Reverend Ian Granger, the Parish Priest, conducted the service and the Bishop of Carlisle, The Rt Reverend James Newcome, kindly agreed to attend and also preach at the service.
The service was also attended by many local dignitaries from the surrounding areas and by Constable Bill Barker’s widow.

Friday January 14th 2011. Not a very special day, you may ask yourself ? But for Y11 it was!
After taking their B2 Additional Science modular exam on the 13th, they embarked upon a trip to the Centre for Life in Newcastle, the North’s biggest science centre, which looks at human life at the extremes - from the frozen arctic wastes to the baking deserts. Having had the trip postponed due to the snowy conditions in December, they were in for a post-exam treat on the outdoor ice rink and a bit of brain-testing science in the Lifelab ‘chromosomes & DNA’ workshop. With their dedicated team of expert scientist presenters and well equipped lab, the centre offers an experience that pupils cannot get in the average classroom.
Extracting and viewing dividing garlic root tip cells was interspersed with a visit from the Prime Minister, David Cameron (left) on his first trip to the region since taking office. He said: “The Centre for Life is an outstanding example of social enterprise. The medical research is cutting edge and has led

Following this surprise interjection, the remainder of the day was packed with activities from learning to navigate through constellations of the winter nights in the fabulous planetarium, to a motion ride which took you on a (bumpy and stomach turning...) journey though our solar system, with the wrap-around screen adding to the sensory immersion and finally topped off by fantastic clear blue skies overhead and some fun on the ice rink! A great day had by all including Mrs Queenan and Mr Campbell!
to real patient benefit and biotech businesses. And it’s all backed by a fantastic programme of science activities for schoolchildren and the public.”

Talented young writers are taking their first steps into journalism by working alongside an award winning reporter at Solway Community Technology College.
Richard Down, 34, is working at the Silloth secondary school after almost six years as a senior news reporter at the Liverpool ECHO in Merseyside, the Chester Chronicle in Cheshire and the North Wales Daily Post.
Richard has covered major stories from Everton’s failed multi-million pound bid to leave the city of Liverpool to stories from Anglesey in North Wales or the back streets of Huyton where Steven Gerrard grew up. His writing career saw him land a prestigious award in the 2002 North West Journalism awards and in-house prizes for his online work.
He said: “I had a fantastic time working as a news reporter and got the chance to interview some really important people including the then Prime Minister Gordon Brown, rock god Brian May and footballers like Jamie Carragher. I also covered some of the biggest national stories of the day. They were good times - I mean, I met my wife on the papers and I made great friends and contacts too. But my heart has always been in teaching and that’s what I’ve returned to.”
Richard, who has taught English as a foreign language
Journalism Opportunities at
Solway Schoolall round the world, is currently cover supervisor at Solway School helping cover lessons from across the curriculum.
He added: “Now I get the best of both worlds. I get to work with some truly talented and enthusiastic young people and pass on years of real life experience on some important newspapers to those students who have a real interest in getting into jobs in the media. Two Year 10 pupils, Anna Johnson and Sophie Baker, have already got their first byline in the Solway Buzz after writing a great story about local rally drivers. It took me months of hard work and persistence to get my first byline in the paper but thanks to the Journalism Club, and the opportunity provided by Solway Buzz, youngsters are getting the chance to see their names in print before they even leave school.”
The club is in its infancy having only started in earnest after the Christmas break but Richard has high hopes for its future.
The former journalist, who is married to ITV
Border’s West Cumbria reporter Samantha Parker, has already had well-known media professionals express an interest in coming to the school to help out.
Richard said: “I hope to get in people who are at the top of their game to pass on their insights, advice and even practical help in writing stories. You never know where the next top journalist my come from so why not Solway School – we certainly have the talent.” Any pupils wanting to join the journalism group simply need to speak to Richard.

The December Meeting began with the singing of Jerusalem and Elinor Roper was thanked for the Christmas arrangement on the Presidents table.
WI Advisor Sue Hind then took charge of the meeting. It was proposed that Abbeytown WI should be suspended and this was seconded. The proposer and seconder asked that their names should not be publicised.
This first ballot proved to be inconclusive but after further discussion a second ballot passed the proposal. Various discussions took place about legalities needed to close the Bank Account and which records needed to be kept. Sue then left and Mrs Audrey Harrison took the chair for the 83rd AGM of Abbeytown WI.
Mrs Freda Garner gave her report of the year’s happenings and was very sad it was her last report as Secretary. Mrs Audrey Harrison then gave her last report as President and Mrs Elsie Foster proposed the adoption of both reports

Members were welcomed by President Olga Hetherington, who then invited everyone present to partake of the supper which had been provided by members of the Committee. The meal consisted of a cold buffet with hot potatoes, and various trifles and cheesecakes for dessert.
After the meal the AGM business took place.
Reports were given by the Treasurer, Sue Wilson who gave details of the finances, and Secretary, Jean Vorley, who outlined details of events that had taken place during the year. Pat Bell then gave a report on the garden outside the Discovery Centre and the activities that had taken place there to keep everything in ‘apple pie’ order. She then went on to give details of the various beach cleans which had been done during the year and the type of ‘rubbish’ that had been collected including an oil drum which had come from Robin Rigg and also the amounts of dog faeces which had been collected from the shoreline.
President, Olga Hetherington then gave her report in which she thanked the Committee for their work and support during the year giving special mention to individual members for their input into the smooth running of the Committee.

equally between First Silloth Rainbows and Children In Need. Despite the adverse weather conditions, we managed to raise a total of £164, meaning each charity received £82. We would also like to thank the Rainbows, mothers and kind volunteers who turned up to help out on the day.
We charged an entrance fee of £1, which included a cup of tea or coffee accompanied with either a mince pie or piece of shortbread. Stalls consisted
of homemade cakes, books, bric-a-brac, guess the teddies’ name, handmade cards and a raffle.
Congratulations to all the raffle prize winners and Mrs Keaveney who won ‘guess the teddies’ name.
The money raised for the First Silloth Rainbows will be saved up for a trip to Maybie Farm Park in Dumfries later this year. We have taken the Rainbows before which they really enjoyed, and so it is nice to give them a well-deserved treat.

Allerdale Borough Council has outlined plans of how it intends to minimise disruption to front line services despite facing estimated Government spending cuts of around £4million.
At a meeting of the Council’s Executive Committee councillors agreed to take a number of steps designed to reduce the Council’s running costs while safeguarding vital services.
Over the next two years, the Council will put a freeze on any extra spending outside of any contracts it already has. It will use some of its funding reserves and has already identified a range of efficiency savings.
Harry Dyke, Allerdale Borough Council’s Chief Executive, said: “We are committed to protecting front line services for all our customers. Fortunately, through the Council’s Transformation programme, we had already managed to identify £3.47million of savings which were
ABC Spending Cutsimplemented in 2010-11. This has put us in a better position to give serious consideration to how best to absorb the impact of the Government cuts – rather than having to make rash decisions over the next couple of months before the end of the financial year. Instead we are taking the time to conduct a thorough review of the Council’s services. We have pledged not to increase our portion of the Council Tax in 2011-12, which is not only good news for residents but also means the Council is eligible for a grant of £112,000.”

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and the Big Lottery Fund (BIG) have confirmed joint funding of over £1.1million to the Green in Silloth-on-Solway.
The Green lies between the picturesque North Cumbrian coastline and the Victorian town buildings of Silloth-on-Solway. A busy local park, The Green has always relied heavily on volunteers who help who run several popular events including the beer and food festivals, vintage rally, fairs and markets and the kite festival. Recently a Friends of the Green group has been formed to further activities on the green
HLF/BIG’s grant will restore some of The Green’s most historic features, including the Victorian Pagoda, the Edwardian toilets and the 1950s Rose Garden which was built to commemorate Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation. The project will also provide essential new facilities for the local community. These will include the creation of a water play area, a woodland play area and a new town garden, alongside new footpaths around the park.
At the same time, training will be provided for up to 80 new staff and volunteers in nature conservation, restoration and construction skills and how to effectively lead guided walks.
Bill Allison, Town Councillor and Chair of Silloth Regeneration said: “I would like to thank the Heritage Lottery Fund for their support for this project which has been developed over a number of years. I would also like to thank the steering group, the consultants and members of the community who have helped achieve this success”
Simon Green, Director of Southern Green Chartered Landscape Architects and Lead Consultant said: “This is a terrific opportunity for Silloth, and well deserved by the people of the town who have worked so hard to help put the bid together. The Green is a very special place, and this investment will not only safeguard the future of this unique landscape for local

The annual “Men’s Night” Xmas event was held in December in the church hall with all tickets sold. Everyone enjoyed the pie and peas, trifle and mince pies. The programme of twenty songs and carols with the ever popular draw was very well received.
The large number of prizes are donated by the choir members and friends of the choir. The three soloists were Arthur Todd, Jim Brough and Harold Bosward. Rev. David Tembey and
Mrs Lynn Tembey gave an enthusiastic vote of thanks. The event raised £740 for church funds.

Cranberry sauce laced with port is produced and the chicken liver pate is blitzed smooth and left to set. The Food Technology room was set up so that it is ready for the following day.
On Saturday 11th December, an atmosphere of controlled excitement and nerves fills the Food room. First task for a couple of the lads is the bread making, producing their three batches of plaited rolls by hand. Filo baskets are produced and the Cumberland sauce made. The desserts look great. The mini mince pies are lightly dusted with icing sugar and sprinkled with edible white glitter. After a short break it is vegetable preparation time and students start to peel,

Dear Buzz,
Across Advent Sunday weekend 2010, the parish church of St Mary’s Holme Cultram Abbey, Abbeytown held a Celebration of Christmas Trees from Thursday 25th to Monday 29th November. This Celebration attempted to bring to life the joy and wonder of the Christmas season alive, in an attempt to raise funds for the running and day-day costs of the Abbey, amid the ongoing costs and efforts of the Abbey’s rebuilding and restoration. Across the five days on which the Celebration was held, more than £7,500 was raised. This not only involved a huge amount of planning and preparation, but was dependent on the generosity and kindness of many.
Kate was a geriatric patient who had little power of communication but was often seen writing.

What do you see nurses, What do you see?
Are you thinking when you are looking at meA crabbit old woman not very wise,Uncertain of habit with far-away eyes,Who dribbles her food and makes no reply,When you say in a loud voice“I do wish you’d try”,Who seems not to notice the things that you doAnd forever is losing a stocking or shoe,Who unresisting or not lets you do as you willwith bathing and feeding the long day to fill,Is that what you’re thinkingIs that what you see? Then open your eyes nurse,You’re not looking at me.
I’ll tell you who I am as I sit here so stillAs I use at your bidding, as I eat at your will.I’m a small child of ten, with a father and mother,Brothers and sisters who love one another,A young girl of sixteen with wings on her feet,Dreaming that soon now a lover she’ll meet;A bride soon at twenty, my heart given a leap,Remembering the vows that I promised to keep:At twenty-five now I have young of my own,Who needs me to build a secure happy home.A young woman of thirty, My young now grow fast,Bound to each other with ties that should last:At forty my young ones now grown will soon be gone,But my man stays beside me to see I don’t mourn:At fifty once more babies play round me knee,Again we know children my loved one and me.
Dark days are upon me, My husband is dead,I look at the future, I shudder with dread. For my young are all busy rearing young of their ownAnd I think of the years and the love I have known.I’m an old woman now and nature is cruel‘Tis her jest to make old age look like a fool. The body it crumbles, Grace and vigour depart,There is now a stone where once I had an heart:But inside this old carcase A young girl still dwells,And now and again my battered heart swells,I remember the joys, I remember the pain,And I’m loving and living life over again,I think of the years All too few - gone too fast,And accept the stark fact that nothing can last.
So open your eyes nurses,Open and see,Not a crabbit old woman,Look closer - see ME.
Dear Buzz,
May I through your local newspaper vent my anger at irresponsible dog owners. During the Christmas and New year holidays I visited my elderly mother who lives in Esk Street, Silloth, nothing unusual about that, but over this holiday period I was unable to walk from my car to the house door with out dodging dog muck. My granddaughters aged 7 and 3 had to be carried across the grass path as it was like a mine field. Please dog owners of Silloth refrain from letting your dog foul areas where pensioners live and if an accident occurs pick it up. You know who you are.
Many thanksName withheld

Dear Buzz,
I would like to say thank-you to the lady who delivers the Buzz to my area on Skinburness road. Just before Christmas she noticed when putting the paper into my outside post box in the afternoon that there were letters and cards in the box. She was concerned and contacted my neighbours. They had seen me about earlier in the day but phoned to check I was alright. In the business of Christmas I had forgotten to check the box. It is good to know that there are concerned people keeping an eye on the elderly. My sincere thanks to this thoughtful lady.

These are some of many donations given throughout 2010 to worthy causes within Silloth. The shop relies on a team of volunteers to man the shop every day throughout the year - these volunteers giving their time to ensure the shop remains open. Many thanks to all our volunteers for their tireless work and to the people of Silloth who continue to support us.We hope you all have a Happy New Year, and look forward to seeing you in 2011.

over the quality of your pictures and it seems to me to be a great shame that they are ruined by careless printing.Like many old codgers l enjoy the content and the spirit of the Buzz and this months back page is something all locals should be proud of. I was surprised at how many locals have done so well at sport. The front page with our Christmas lights is something the whole town should be proud of. That and the effort put into it by the few, mind you I still think it is unfair that the council don’t do it for Silloth as they do for other towns in this area, after all we all pay our council tax the same. Thinking about it when the money dries up we may be the only one with lights in the future. Let me repeat this is not a complaint just pointing this out.

We would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all those who contributed in any way to the Celebration’s success; it could not have been achieved without the combined, united effort of all those involved. From those who bought and decorated trees, those who generously gave to the various stalls, raffles and the auction, and to all those who worked tirelessly before, during and after the Celebration. Finally, we would like to extend our immense thanks to all those who attended and supported the Celebration.Your support is as ever much appreciated, as we seek to perpetuate the life and ministry of the Abbey as a house of prayer and praise, in seeking to share and proclaim God’s love.

Tessa Hainsworth is a natural storyteller and this is her memoir of her second year of living the dream in Cornwall. She and her family did what many people talk about but few have the nerve to do - they changed their lives completely after Tessa leaves a stressful, city based, executive job.
Tessa’s new job was as a rural postie and this book, which follows on from the wonderful Up with the Larks, finds her facing the economic consequences of the life-change and the realities of living in a remote rural community. It is extremely funny, genuinely uplifting and thought-provoking.

The Leopard by Jo Nesbo
In The leopard, it is the middle of winter in Oslo, and a killer stalks the city streets. Two young women have been found dead, each with twenty-four inexplicable puncture wounds, drowned in their own blood. The crime scenes offer no clues and the media is reaching fever pitch. There’s only one man who can help, and he doesn’t want to be found.
Harry Hole has been losing himself in the squalor of Hong Kong’s opium dens ever since he was traumatised by The Snowman investigation. It’s only when he hears that his father is seriously ill in hospital that he reluctantly returns to Oslo. He has no intention of working on the case, but when a third body is found brutally murdered in a city park, his instinct takes over. The victims appear completely unconnected
to one another, but it’s not long before Harry makes an important discovery. Someone has a list of victims and is picking them off one by one – can Harry solve the case before another life is taken?
This is a chilling and spectacular read. Anyone looking for serious and compelling crime writing need look no further…..

The 7th Silloth Tennis Club annual awards evening was held at Silloth Sports & Social Club on the 11th of December and despite clashing with the X Factor final it was well attended with over 80 adults and children turning up.
With guest presenters Robert Jefferson and Jamie Harrison presenting the trophies there was also a visit from Santa, a quiz, a raffle and stand up Bingo to keep everyone entertained with the excellent Adam Johnston providing the disco.
To round the evening off live music was provided by the excellent Retribution and The Pulse who both showed why they are regarded as some of the best local talent around.
The club would like to thank everyone who contributed to the raffle, Louise Stoddart and Alan and Emma Oliver for the buffet, Rob and Jamie for their presenting and the Social Club for hosting the event.

Silloth Veterans 2 Silloth Young Gulls 1
After a ten year absence it was decided to get this game back on. Conditions were nice and white for the Boxing Day clash.
Silloth Veterans got off to a flying start when Phil Scott waltzed past Andy Hardman and banged it in the bottom corner to put them 1–0

up. Some fine saves by Jamie B (birthday boy) kept us in the game until all one footed Adam Carr scored just before half time.
In the second half some awesome defending by Panda and Gareth Lewis
kept the Veterans in it until the Veterans got a penalty. The birthday boy stepped up to take it when it was saved by Dave the Cat (Brough)!
Two fine line clearances off the old man John Slack and then the Veterans broke
away and a fine volley from outside the box by David Minnican sealed the win for the Veterans.
They now have the well deserved bragging rights for 12 months, or maybe 120 months!

Award for Rally Aces
A pair of speed mad accountants are celebrating after winning their class in a major 2010 stage rally championship.
Using their self-prepared Subaru Impreza, Nick and Heather Stamper from Beckfoot came third overall at Weeton Army Camp,
Report by: Sophie Baker and Anna Johnson
Above: Nick and Heather StamperBelow: Nick at the wheel with Heather navigating
Blackpool, in June. They were only beaten by rally cars equipped with state of the art technology and the result helped them claim top spot in their class in 2010.
This month the couple, who run an accountancy practice from their Beckfoot home, picked up personal awards from the Association of North Western Car Clubs (ANWCC) for Nick’s performances behind the
wheel and Heather’s skills as co-driver. Heather says “It was amazing going to the award ceremony in Manchester and dressing up instead of seeing everyone in overalls. There were about 150 people there from as far away as Cornwall and Wales and a few others from Scotland.”
Heather was named best co-driver while Nick landed a runner-up accolade.
Now Nick and Heather’s plan is to attack the next ANWCC event in Blackpool on February 4th and 5th.
Heather said: “We work together in the office, rally together and are married. People ask us how we do it and I just say, ‘It’s just how it is.”
49-year-old Nick’s passion for racing began when he was 13. He started with carting which he did
for 25 years racing with the likes of Johnny Herbert, David Coulthard and Jenson Button’s dad, John.
Nick believes rallying was a natural progression for him and just wishes he had started earlier. Wife Heather, 43, just fancied racing and went for it.
In the future they want to teach people rally skills as they have a lifetime of experience. Heather said: “We think that it is good for kids to be taught how to be safer drivers, Rally skills teach them respect and what to do if they need to correct something while out on the roads.”
The lessons will take place later this year on a disused airstrip at Silloth airfield where Nick and Heather have their workshop. They hope to be ready by the end of 2011.
