What does STG do?

For all your transport problems - stg has the solution +44 (0) 1234 213339 WWW.STGTRANSPORT.COM [email protected]

We solve transport problems, it’s as simple as that.

Your cargo may be urgent, oversize or problematical in some other way. Sometimes it’s as simple or as complex as finding the right trailer, in the right place, on the right day, at the right price.

Frequently the cargo is oversize or perhaps grossly overweight – invariably valuable, to the point of being invaluable. On many occasions both fragile and delicate – even the simplest of movements can be challenging in a wide variety of ways.

Our reputation for solving transport problems is legendary. The wealth of experience, everyone’s personal commitment and a flair for innovation, ensure that STG offer the best possible solution – time & time again.

Where does STG go?

Sometimes the destination is just around the corner or, at the other end of the spectrum, to the far side of the globe.

Trailer movements, whether standard or special, represent the largest proportion of STG’s work load. By definition, the equipment is only a small part of the equation – invariably, to some of the more remote destinations, road conditions may leave a lot to be desired. Add to the mix extreme climate conditions, language problems, unfathomable documentation and much more – complicating the task at every level.

In recent years, for many customers, shipments to other parts of the world have become more commonplace – for the full list of destinations, see our website – remembering that, month on month, more are being added.

How does STG do it?

We start with the Team – every STG customer is looked after by a personal Account Manager, someone who understands their needs, down to the finest detail.

It’s the Account Managers responsibility to analyse every enquiry, consider every possible option, determine the best solution and then see it through to a final conclusion – delivered safely, to budget and on time – in today’s world, no mean feat in itself.

The Account Manager selects the resources – predominately from one of our permanent “in house” suppliers, operators who we have worked with for over twenty years. In addition, we have developed what is possibly one of the largest databases of approved specialist contractors – based not only throughout the UK and Europe, but also in many of the more obscure parts of the world.

Who does STG work for?

Our customers range from the giants of industry to, at the other extreme, independent consultants – many are brand names who call on STG for “that little extra”.

Some are manufacturers, importers, exporters, freight forwarders, ships agents or whatever – all have one thing in common – they have a transport problem which needs to be solved quickly, effectively and economically.

The range of industries is vast – from satellite components (European Space Agency) to sculptures (Sothebys), press machinery for the motor industry (Nissan) to glamourous film sets (Warner Bros).

Meet the team

At STG we have three key words – experience, commitment and innovation. Taking experience first, we are almost certain that we have the highest concentration of “problem solvers”, in one office, in the UK. Each Account Manager has a range of skills, complementing and inter-reacting with one another. Although commitment is a well-worn phrase, at STG, it means something. We don’t like to be beaten, even though sometimes the challenge can be mind boggling. Finally innovation – we enjoy researching new and radical solutions, some that others may have never even entertained.

From the Berlin Wall to Los Angeles

Who would have thought that, some thirty years after it was demolished, STG would be moving a section of the Berlin Wall to the USA, on behalf of a private collector in Los Angeles.

The wall was first built in 1961, in order to separate East and West Germany. It is estimated that over 5.000 people attempted to cross the wall, with as many as 200 losing their lives. For this reason, it is commonly known as “the Wall of Shame”.

Although not a sculpture in the purest sense of the word, as a piece of art, it evokes thoughts and feelings for a period that should never be forgotten.

Military support for over 25 years

Over the past 25 years, STG has provided military support to British, American & NATO forces throughout the wider Europe, not forgetting the several UN Peace keeping missions (principally the former Yugoslavia).

Destinations have ranged from beyond the Arctic Circle (winter maneouvres), to the far corners of Eastern Europe (Romania) and across into North Africa (Tunisia).

One project that we are particularly proud of called for over fifty specialist trailers to be mobilised at just 24 hour’s notice!

On this occasion, equipment is on route to Sardinia – with a complimentary consignment destined for Sicily. Perhaps the most challenging, some years ago, was some time sensitive material to the Azores – but that’s another story.

Where is Tiree?

You may well ask. If you take a look at Google Maps, you will find that Tiree is a small island, measuring only 10 miles long and 5 miles wide, located off the west coast of Scotland. More remarkably, it is one of the sunniest places in the UK and hosts the Tiree Wave Classic for wind surfers, drawing participants from around the world every October.

Commissioned originally as an RAF base during WW2, Tiree Airport plays an important part in the link to the mainland, with daily flights to Glasgow. Needless to say, safety is paramount and therefore when STG were approached to deliver two new fire tenders to the airport from Spain, the team rose to the task. Here seen waiting at Oban for the last of several sea crossings, in a matter of hours, this tender will be on standby for every eventuality.

Having travelled millions of miles…

...in the air, these aircraft fuselage sections are on the move again, albeit by road. In a matter of weeks, they will be converted into crew training facilities, deployed elsewhere in the world to play a vital role in helping to ensure passenger safety.

Whilst these particular sections travelled from the UK to Germany, possibly the most challenging project some years ago involved the recovery of a damaged BAE146 from Samsun Airport on the Black Sea, returning to the UK, complete with wings, tail fin and engines. Remaining on the same trailers throughout the journey was a pre-condition in securing the contract – no mean feat over such a distance!

Slightly further up the spectrum, the more sophisticated cabin and fuselage sections are capable of replicating evacuation procedures including darkness, smoke, the use of the slides, life jackets etc. One notable project involved delivery of a cabin simulator to an airport on the outskirts of Moscow, still under part military control, involving high level security clearance for everyone involved.

All in a day’s work for the STG team.

A six hour window

Most customers are alive to the fact that, the larger or heavier the load, the longer it takes to arrange the permits and escorts – particularly when several transit countries are involved. Nowadays it is not uncommon for this process to take as long as two or possibly even three months.

What many customers are not aware of is that, once the permits have been granted, the documentation sets out in specific terms the basis on which the movement must be performed (i.e. the route, date, timing etc).

In this instance, with a Thermal Oxidiser system on route from Italy to the UK, with the vehicle having a Gross Train Weight of 100 tons, the Swiss authorities determined that transit could only take place on a specific day, once a week, to be completed within a six hour window. In simplistic terms, if we had missed our slot, we would have had to wait another week!

Not the best of situations, particularly when the unit is urgently required – needless to say, we made it!

A Little known fact

Although best known for trailer movements, it is a little known fact that STG are also heavily involved in both shipping and air freight.

Just taking air freight, past projects have included – a chartered Martinair freighter, on behalf of Kodak, from Luxembourg to Mexico – an Antonov 124 from Parma Italy to Shanghai, for Coca-Cola – a 747 freighter from Prestwick, Scotland to Atlanta, for Rolls Royce – to name but a few.

At the end of the spectrum, whether urgently needed for a car plant or a refinery, with the consignment perhaps weighing no more than a few kilos, STG have always managed to save the day.

Always remember, whatever the transport problem, STG have the solution.
