Page 9: Solutions to crime

In contrast to incarceration and retribution a new model of justice is developing. Christie puts forward the concept of RESTORATIVE JUSTICE which puts the victim and the community at the heart of the solution s to crime.

The 3 elements of restorative justice are:

It seeks to put right the harm that has been done.

It seeks to balance the need of the victim with the need for accountability fo the offender

It seeks to ensure that the victim is involved in the decision making process.

Page 10: Solutions to crime

According to the Home Office the process of restorative justice is based on tth 3 R;s:

Restoration – offenders should apologies and make amends for the harm done.

Reintegration – offenders should be brought back into the community after they have paid their dept.

Responsibility – offenders take responsibility for the consequences of their actions.
