If the user clicks Display Results in the SSA PDM SolidWorks Converter dialog box, a report based on the latest process run is displayed, as shown in the following picture. If no run has been performed during the current SolidWorks Converter session, the results of previous runs based on the
2-6 | SSA PDM - SolidWorks Integration Enhancements
status log files are displayed. The status log files include the results of all previous runs.
For example, during a particular run the converter finds 37 RELEASED files in the PDM vault. Of these RELEASED files, only two files were converted and then the process was stopped. In the next run, two more files are converted. Consequently, the results report shows that in total, four files are converted.
The entries shown in the previous picture mean:
Status report entry Description
Total Files The total number of RELEASED SolidWorks files in SSA PDM.
Files successfully downloaded
The number of files that are downloaded successfully.
Files of current version
The number of files of the latest version, which means, that for these files, conversion is not required.
Files successfully converted
The number of files for which conversion is successful.
Files successfully transferred
The number of files that are successfully transferred to the SSA PDM vault.
SSA PDM - SolidWorks Integration Enhancements | 2-7
Download failed for files
The number of files that could not be downloaded.
Files with conversion check errors
The number of files for which technical problems occurred during conversion.
Conversion failed for files
The number of files that could not be converted.
Transfer failed for files
The number of files that could not be transferred to the SSA PDM vault.
Note
If the status report results from a transfer or a resume process, the status report also includes results of previous runs.
If the number f files for which technical problems occurred during conversion is more than zero, notify the SSA PLM support group.
After you run a file conversion or upload process, you must check the contents of the conversion error log file conv_err_log.txt, which is located in the following directory:
%CFE_CLIENT_HOME%\\temp\\swconv\\.
If the number of files with conversion check errors is more than zero, notify the PLM support group.
If you complete a conversion or upload process and then click Display Results without closing the SSA PDM SolidWorks Converter dialog box first, the information of the conversion status report is retrieved from the system memory and provides a full overview of the conversion/upload run, involving all RELEASED SolidWorks files that the converter found in SSA PDM.
If you close the SSA PDM SolidWorks Converter dialog box after performing a conversion or upload run, the conversion status information is stored in a status log file, but the status log file only contains information about the files that were processed during the run. Therefore, if you reopen the SSA PDM SolidWorks Converter dialog box and then click Display Results, you will view the information of the status log file of the previous run, which may be incomplete if the previous run stopped before all RELEASED files were processed.
2-8 | SSA PDM - SolidWorks Integration Enhancements
Start
The Start command is used to start the conversion process. If the user clicks Start, the converter:
Makes all commands unavailable, except for the Stop command.
Checks if a local download directory is specified and if yes, the converter checks if this is a valid directory. If this directory is not specified or if it is not a valid directory, it displays an error message and stops the process. For further information about download directories, see “Troubleshooting.”
Checks if there is enough disk space. If the available disk space is less than 100 MB, it displays an error message and stops the process.
Checks if SolidWorks is installed. If SolidWorks is not installed or the installed SolidWorks version is not supported by the converter, it displays an error message and stops the process.
Checks if SolidWorks is running. If yes, the converter stops the process and displays an error message.
Prompts user to log on to SSA PDM if the user is not logged on to SSA PDM already.
Looks for RELEASED files in all projects in the SSA PDM vault. If no RELEASED SolidWorks files are present in SSA PDM, the converter displays an error message and stops the process.
Prepares a list of RELEASED files and writes this list to the following file: %CFE_CLIENT_HOME%\temp\swconv\prev_run_conv_dir.txt. The converter uses this information when the user clicks Resume (from previous) or Transfer files to PDM. For further information, see “Resume (from previous),” and “Transfer files to PDM.”
Opens the conversion status error log file from the following location: %CFE_CLIENT_HOME%\temp\swconv\conv_err_log.txt. To this file, the converter adds a time stamp before the run is performed and adds further information during the run. This file contains information about every run that is performed. Users are advised to check the contents of this file after the process is finished. See the Appendix for an example of the error log file.
Downloads the RELEASED files from the SSAPDM vault area to the specified directory.
Converts the downloaded files and transfer the converted files to SSA PDM, provided that the Transfer converted files to PDM (in parallel) check box is selected.
SSA PDM - SolidWorks Integration Enhancements | 2-9
The files are downloaded one by one. The Conversion Status group box of the SSA PDM SolidWorks Converter dialog box shows the progress of the download, conversion and transfer processes.
Files that have been downloaded successfully are converted in parallel, that is, while downloading is still in process, files already downloaded are converted. To convert a file, the converter opens the file in SolidWorks, converts it and closes the file. If the Transfer converted files to PDM (in parallel) check box is selected, the file that is converted is transferred immediately to PDM.
The conversion process can stop before it is completed. For further information, see “Stopping the process.”
Resume (from previous)
This command is used to resume a previous run that was stopped before completion. This command is similar to the Start command, but it has the following differences:
The converter checks if the specified directory name is the same as the directory name of the previous run. If it differs, the user is asked to use the directory of the previous run and continue or to stop the process.
After generating the list of RELEASED files from SSA PDM, the converter reads the status of the previous run from status log files and takes the following steps, except for transferring if the Transfer files to PDM check box is cleared:
Files that are already transferred in previous runs will not be transferred again.
Files for which transfer failed in previous runs will be transferred again.
Files that are converted (but not transferred) in previous runs will only be transferred.
Files for which conversion failed in previous runs will be downloaded again.
Files that are already downloaded in previous runs will not be downloaded again.
Files of the latest version, that is, files that do not require conversion found in the previous runs, will be skipped.
Files for which download failed will be downloaded.
2-10 | SSA PDM - SolidWorks Integration Enhancements
The resume process can stop before it is completed. For further information, see “Stopping the process.”
Transfer files to PDM
The purpose of this command is to transfer files that were converted but not transferred to the SSA PDM vault in previous runs.
If the user clicks Transfer files to PDM the converter:
Makes all commands unavailable, except for the Stop command.
Checks if a local download directory is specified and if this is a valid directory. If not, an error message is displayed and the process stops. Likewise, if the specified directory is not identical to the directory of the previous run, the process stops. For further information on download directories, see “Troubleshooting.”
Prompts the user to log on to SSA PDM if he was not logged on already.
Generates a list of all SolidWorks RELEASED files from all projects in the SSA PDM vault. If no RELEASED SolidWorks files are present in SSA PDM, an error message is displayed and the process stops.
Opens the conversion status error log file conv_err_log.txt, and adds process data to this file.
Transfers the file that were converted but not transferred during the previous runs. The converter obtains this information from the conversion status log files. After completing the transfer process, the converter writes the latest updates in the history log file. For further information on the status log files and the history log files involved, see “Start” and “Conversion status.”
The transfer process can stop before it is completed. For further information, see “Stopping the process.”
Conversion status
The following picture shows the progress of a conversion run being performed.
SSA PDM - SolidWorks Integration Enhancements | 2-11
During the conversion process, the converter writes conversion status information into following files:
%CFE_CLIENT_HOME\temp\swconv\conv_download.txt
%CFE_CLIENT_HOME\temp\swconv\conv_conversion.txt
%CFE_CLIENT_HOME\temp\swconv\conv_transfer.txt
The converter reads these files if the user:
Resumes a process by clicking Resume (from previous)
Transfers converted files back to the SSA PDM vault by clicking Transfer files to PDM
Displays conversion status details by clicking Display Results
Users are strongly recommended not to delete or modify these files.
After the conversion process is completed, the converter writes the time stamp and the latest status details into the history log file conv_history.txt and displays the results to the user. The history log file is located in:
%CFE_CLIENT_HOME\temp\swconv\Conv_History.txt
2-12 | SSA PDM - SolidWorks Integration Enhancements
The history log file contains data and time stamps of all previous process runs.
Stopping the process
The process runs started by means of the Start, Resume (from previous), or Transfer files to PDM commands can stop before completion if:
The user clicks Stop.
The specified stop time is reached.
The available disk space becomes less than 100 MB.
Connecting to SSA PDM fails during the conversion process.
Opening SolidWorks fails.
Any exception occurs.
Developer log
To facilitate investigating possible causes of problems that may occur when running the converter, you can create a developer log file. To create a developer log file, create environment variable SW_CONV_LOG, with value ON. As a result, the log file %CFE_CLIENT_HOME%\temp\swconv\ssaswconvert.log is created.
To undo the creation of this file, either change the value to OFF or delete the environment variable.
Troubleshooting
This section lists the error messages that appear if particular problems using the converter occur.

Balloon numbers on sub-assemblies
16027 You cannot map balloon numbers from sub-assemblies in SolidWorks to SSA PDM because of a SolidWorks limitation.
Balloon/find numbers and leading zeros
Doc#303 SSA PDM find numbers derived from SolidWorks balloon numbers are always saved without leading zeros.
If find numbers are also created in SSA PDM, where leading zeros are maintained, you can define find numbers that are different only because of leading zeros, for example 99 and 0099.
Working with Lightweight or View-only
16848, 16849
In the integration, there are various limitations if you work with Lightweight components or use the SolidWorks View-only mode. For further information, please contact the SSA PLM support group.

Functional Area ID Description
Configuration specific mapping reserved names
16932 Users should not define configuration-specific mapping for attributes named Item_ID, Revision, or Status, because these attributes are reserved for internal use by the application.
Top down load 17215 The top down load feature does not support adding a child item to another child item that was previously represented as a CAD part file. The part-file-item, to which a child is added, does not automatically convert to a CAD-assembly-file-item.
Mapping and template association
17677 Sometimes, the link between a file and the related mapping template can be lost. To resolve this problem, the association between the file and the template must be removed and then restored.
Top down load NA The top down load file contains the following error message: “#ERROR CAD API Init”. This error can be ignored.
Edit file in integration on assemblies
19560 If you use the Edit File in Integration command for an assembly in the SSA PDM client while SolidWorks is not connected to SSA PDM, each child component of the assembly is opened in a separate SolidWorks window.
SolidWorks closed and View/Edit file
18807 Due to a SolidWorks API limitation, you cannot use the View File in Integration, or Edit File in Integration commands if SolidWorks is closed. This applies to SolidWorks 2005.

Read-only files flagged as modified
2048746, 18146
2083519, 19217
In some cases SolidWorks flags read-only files as modified, for example, viewing the properties of the files causes this setting to be set. Because it is not possible to determine why the file has been set to modified, the integration asks the user how to handle such a file. You can either save the changes locally, or check out the file from SSA PDM, so that the change can be saved back to SSA PDM. If you choose the file to be saved locally, the file is set to read-write.
This means that subsequent changes, accidental or otherwise, to the now writable file, will not be saved to SSA PDM and no warning will appear if the changed part is a component in an assembly being saved to SSA PDM if the saved component file is saved directly to SSA PDM, a warning will appear.
Values for scale and paper size
Doc#426 If you implement the SSA PDM integration for SolidWorks 2006 and 2007, make sure that the values that you use in SolidWorks for scale and paper size are stored in the SSA PDM database. To save these values in the SSA PDM database, in the Administrative Console, select System Settings ->Lookup Tables -->SSA PLM Tables--><the relevant table>.
