CLEANING UP SOLID WASTE A Pathway to Prosperity www.eGeneration.org MAKING SOLID WASTE A PROFIT CENTER What You Should Know: According to the EPA, in 2012, Americans generated about 251 million tons of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) also known as trash. This waste takes up a tremendous amount of time and resources to handle, transport, and dispose of in a way that does not cause long term harm to the environment. There are many robust and mature technologies that can convert MSW into transportation fuel or fuel for power generation, and they all have one thing in common: they use tremendous amounts of energy. One of the reasons why MSW to fuel technologies are not employed to a greater extent in the United States is the high price of energy. A Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) can produce heat and electricity so affordably that it is possible that MSW to fuel technologies would be commonly employed by the free market in waste disposal efforts. Converting MSW into fuel offers many advantages, including having a better environmental presence as well as producing a fuel network that can aid in America’s achieving energy independence. Reduced and stable waste costs can allow manufacturers an advantage in world markets. Using MSW to produce fuel can lessen transportation costs and environmental impacts. Technologies such as plasma gasification, made affordable by MSR technology, have the capabilities to easily dispose of many types of hazardous waste. The eGeneration Foundation is working to form an alliance to develop a national energy plan, promoting the next generation of fuels powered by Molten Salt Reactor technology. As studies and analysis of this promising technology are widely understood, there will be widespread industry support for commercializing this next generation process, thus providing a clear pathway to prosperity. 1768 East 25 th Street Suite 301 Cleveland, OH 44114 216.367.0602 www.eGeneration.org The eGeneration Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit educational charity. MAKING SOLID WASTE A PROFIT CENTER What  You  Should  Know:

• According  to  the  EPA,  in  2012,  Americans  generated  about  251  million  tons  of  Municipal  Solid  Waste  (MSW)  also  known  as  trash.

• This  waste  takes  up  a  tremendous  amount  of  time  and  resources  to  handle,  transport,  and  dispose  of  in  a  way  that  does  not  cause  long  term  harm  to  the  environment.

• There  are  many  robust  and  mature  technologies  that  can  convert  MSW  into  transportation  fuel  or  fuel  for  power  generation,  and  they  all  have  one  thing  in  common:  they  use  tremendous  amounts  of  energy.

• One  of  the  reasons  why  MSW  to  fuel  technologies  are  not  employed  to  a  greater  extent  in  the  United  States  is  the  high  price  of  energy.

• Reduced  and  stable  waste  costs  can  allow  manufacturers  an  advantage  in  world  markets.  Using  MSW  to  produce  fuel  can  lessen  transportation  costs  and  environmental  impacts.

• Technologies  such  as  plasma  gasification,  made  affordable  by  MSR  technology,  have  the  capabilities  to  easily  dispose  of  many  types  of  hazardous  waste.
